We're truly living in a world that is simultaneously drowning in information while starving for wisdom. So, friends...let's get into God's Word. With many voices competing for our attention, we're intentionally making space for Jesus' voice to be the loudest. Welcome to the podcast!
In this episode of Neue Thing Podcast, we dig into Ephesians 4:13, picking up mid-thought from Paul's teaching on the gifts God has given the church. These gifts aren't for show — they're meant to build up the body of Christ and move us toward maturity.
We talk about what it looks like to lead in a way that builds the church up instead of tearing it down, and why staying rooted in God's Word (rather than our own opinions about it) is what protects us from false teaching. When we disconnect from community and stop using the gifts we've been given, we become easy targets for every wind of false doctrine that comes our way.
The heart of this passage points us toward two things: unity and maturity — so that we're no longer tossed around, easily deceived. And we close with a reminder that Jesus isn't just our Savior who forgives sin — He's Lord, which means our lives, our will, our everything is surrendered to Him.

We’re in Ephesians 4:7-12 to explore God’s design for spiritual gifts and the grace that fuels them. Paul reminds us that our spiritual gifts aren’t given just for our own benefit. We are graced so that we can reflect that grace to others and build up the body of Christ. Walking through verses 8-10, we examine Christ’s triumph on the cross over darkness, His incarnation, and His ascension, which paved the way for Him to equip His church. When we step into our God-given gifts, the church is strengthened, and God is glorified. But when we hold back, the entire body suffers. Join us as we challenge ourselves to identify, pray over, and actively operate in the gifts God has given us.

Our study of Ephesians moves into chapter four as we explore verses 1–6 and discover what it truly means to walk worthy of your calling. Even while writing as a prisoner of Rome, Paul refuses to identify with his captors. Instead, he anchors his identity completely in Jesus Christ. In this episode, we talk about how understanding how deeply loved you are by God changes the way you live and interact with others. It's not about forced uniformity, but it's about accessing God's love to actively cultivate humility, gentleness, and patience. This week, not only are we covering one of my favorite passages in Ephesians (Eph. 3:14-21), but we also have the privilege of welcoming Charity Gurtler as a special guest for today’s podcast! In today’s passage, Paul falls to his knees to ask God for inner strength, a deeply rooted understanding of Christ’s love, and spiritual fullness. In this episode, we reflect on Ephesians 3:7–9 and the beauty of God’s grace—a free and undeserved gift made possible through the complete and sufficient sacrifice of Jesus. Paul points all glory to Christ, the true Grace-Giver, while also remembering how deeply his own life was transformed by grace. His words remind us that none of us can earn God’s favor through striving or good works; grace is freely given even to the very least of us and is meant to be received with gratitude. When was the last time you truly marveled at God’s grace? In this episode, we explore Ephesians 3:1–6 and the powerful example of Paul, who, even as a prisoner, continued to faithfully proclaim the gospel to the very people he was once trained to despise. Rather than allowing suffering or difficult circumstances to silence his purpose, Paul remained committed to revealing the mystery of the gospel—that through Christ, Gentiles are fellow heirs and fully included in the promises of God. This passage challenges us to examine our own hearts and consider where we may be tempted to gatekeep the grace of God, forgetting that the gospel was always meant for all people. As Christ tears down every dividing wall, we are invited to become vessels through which the beauty, unity, and hope of the gospel flow into the lives of others.

In this episode, we close out Ephesians chapter 2 by reflecting on the incredible truth of our identity in Christ. Through Jesus, we are no longer strangers and aliens, but fellow citizens in God’s kingdom and members of His household. We have full access to the Father, and nothing can separate us from His presence. Yet so often, we live striving to earn what has already been freely given through grace. As heirs to the throne, we are called to walk confidently in the inheritance we’ve received. Paul reminds us that our lives must be built on the only sure foundation—Jesus Christ, the Cornerstone. Anything apart from Him is unstable, but when we build our lives on Christ, we stand on solid ground.

In this episode, Ephesians 2:14–17 reminds us that Christ is our reconciler. In a time when Jews and Gentiles were deeply divided, Jesus tore down the walls of hostility and brought them together as one. That same truth challenges us today. If we are in Christ, we are called to be defined not by our preferences, backgrounds, or differences, but by God’s love. Jesus didn’t just preach reconciliation—He embodied it, inviting all into the same grace. So the question becomes: are we still building walls He already tore down? As followers of Christ, we’re invited to actively pursue unity, welcoming others in and letting love speak louder than anything that might divide us.

Paul highlights the deep cultural divide between Jewish and Gentile believers In Ephesians 2:11-13, yet celebrates how Christ unites all through the gospel of grace. He reminds us who we were before Christ—separated, excluded, strangers to God’s promises, and without hope. This reflection isn’t meant to shame us, but to magnify God’s mercy. When we remember how far we’ve been brought, His grace becomes even sweeter. Though life in Christ doesn’t remove hardship, it replaces hopelessness with nearness to Him. We are no longer far off—we are brought near through Jesus. In light of this incredible grace, how will we respond and live differently?

In Ephesians 2:4–10, Paul brings us to the centerpiece of the gospel. Just before this passage he described the reality of life apart from Christ—spiritually dead and unable to rescue ourselves. Into that hopeless condition come two of the most beautiful words in Scripture: “But God.” God interjects Himself into the brokenness of our “before Christ” lives. Out of His rich mercy, He does for us what we could never do for ourselves. Paul reminds us that “by grace you have been saved.” This passage invites us to live in the freedom of grace—receiving the salvation we could never earn and stepping into the good plans God has already prepared for our lives.

Their faith and love deeply encouraged him, and it moved him to pray boldly for them. In Ephesians 1:9–14, Paul invites us to anchor our identity in the character and nature of God. These verses reveal the spiritual blessings we already have access to in Christ and remind us that God is sovereign. His will is never thwarted, and His purposes will be accomplished. Even in a fallen world marked by suffering and sin, nothing can take away the hope of glory we carry. As God’s will unfolds, it ultimately leads to praise, the only place where praise is rightly due. This passage challenges us to resist letting our circumstances define who God is or who we are, and instead to examine the lies we may believe about God or ourselves—lies that often lead to bondage rather than freedom.

Today, we’re looking at what it actually looks like to trust the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us a clear picture through three key commands:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart – Trusting God requires surrender and often means waiting on Him instead of rushing ahead.
Lean not on your own understanding – Our understanding is limited, but God’s is not. When we rely only on ourselves, we risk being foolish.
In all your ways know Him – Trusting God isn’t just for big decisions; it means seeking His wisdom in every area of life.
The Promise: He will make your paths straight. The straight path isn’t always easy, but it is always good. Trusting God means allowing Him to guide us, even when the way forward isn’t clear.

As we complete our walk through studying the names of God in Scripture, we end with God’s covenant name, Yahweh (LORD), and Zealous. Yahweh reminds us of His personal desire for relationship with this name–which we first read about in Exodus as He reveals Himself to Moses. Later, in Ezekiel, we read about God as a zealous God, but it’s so refreshing to know God’s zeal is always tempered by His goodness, His love, His compassion, and His restoration. Margi Galloway served for 16 years at Scottsdale Bible Church. She was the Minister to Women, Minister of Spiritual Life and founded and directed the W.I.L.D. (Women in Leadership Development) ministry where women were trained and equipped to serve in the church and the community. She has had a long-standing love for women, communicates with enthusiasm, and is gifted in encouraging them to be all they can be. People who have worked alongside Margi in ministry speak of her as friend, leader, teacher, mentor, woman of faith, giver of love and passionate about serving Jesus. Margi recently became a widow after being married to her husband Dale for 50 years. She has 2 adult children and 5 grandchildren.

ABOUT THE EPISODE
“Faith itself is a gift of God.” The most important question that will ever be asked of you is: Who do you say Jesus is? In Matthew 16:15-16, Jesus is asking this question of His disciples. Peter was given the gift of faith to respond with a bold declaration that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Promised One.
Jesus is Comforter. While He rules and reigns from a seated position over the Universe–He’s not pacing and rising from His seat–there is one thing that makes Him rise, and it’s your pain. He draws near to you in your pain and suffering. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” And this comfort serves a purpose. With the same comfort we receive from God, we are able to comfort others. Our suffering is never in vain. It’s purposeful in Christ.

Who wrote Philemon? PaulBefore becoming an Apostle, Paul was a religious terrorist. He actively worked to destroy Christianity and followers of Christ. (Acts 8-9) After encountering Jesus, his life changed forever. When was it written? AD 60-62Philemon was written about 30 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Persecution was on the rise during this time–but the church was also growing and thriving! To whom was it written? PhilemonPhilemon was a friend of Paul’s. Paul had the authority to command and exhort, but he writes as one friend to another on the basis of love. What is the purpose/theme? ForgivenessWhat Paul asked of Philemon (freeing and forgiving his runaway slave) was absurd in their cultural context. This parallels our right standing with God when we do not deserve it.

In the first chapter of Colossians, Paul emphasizes three virtues–faith, hope, and love–as he encourages believers in the church of Colossae. His encouragement shows up in dedicated prayer for these brothers and sisters.
As he eloquently writes this letter, we have the privilege of reading a poem included in this chapter, describing Christ’s supremacy in all things. Jesus is all in all–Jesus is everything!
And in the midst of encouragement, we also receive reminders that our faith requires perseverance. The beauty of this reality is the hope of the Gospel awaiting us when we choose perseverance.

Welcome to Colossians! Join the conversation as we highlight why this letter was needed and how we can benefit from its richness just as much as the first-century church reading it in Paul’s day.
Who wrote it? Some commentaries say Paul while others say Paul and Timothy. Either way, there was a partnership in Paul and Timothy working together to write and deliver God’s Word to churches in desperate need of its theological depth.
When was it written? Colossians was written during Paul’s first imprisonment around 60 AD.
Who was it written to? Paul wrote to a church he had technically never met. He served with the church’s leader–Epaphras–and wrote to encourage them while also pointing out heresy that was creeping in.
What is the main theme/purpose? The main theme can be summarized as The supremacy of Christ in all of life, including the invisible realm. Paul boldly calls out where the Colossians were turning obedience into obligation, and where their faith was void of true joy and delight in the Lord.

Today’s study of Philippians 4 brings us to discover a few parting words from what Paul may have thought was his last letter.
Joy in the midst of suffering
From prison, Paul urges followers of Jesus to rejoice in all circumstances. His example of joy while in chains gives us the perspective to know joy is possible in the midst of the most difficult situations.
Agree in the Lord
Paul also writes to two women who worked with him and helped him spread the Gospel. His direction was to “agree in the Lord.” We don’t know what the disagreement was, but it doesn’t matter. What does matter is the ability to find common ground in the goodness of God. Unity in Christ matters! Pray- Don’t worry
Both prayer and worry require dwelling on something. But, while worry leads us to dwell on anxious thoughts and outcomes, prayer is an intentional dwelling with the Holy Spirit as you take your requests to God. The result of the latter is a peace beyond understanding for your soul.
Paul invites us to think about things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, praiseworthy. In what ways are we tempted to dwell on the opposite of that list?

In Philippians 3, Paul intentionally points out two imperatives we need to follow.
Imperative #1: Rejoice in the LORD.
Imperative #2: Beware!
As we live our lives with an eternal perspective and eternal view of what is to come, we can rejoice in the LORD and keep pressing on to the freedom we experience in Christ. This gift of salvation, Paul reminds us, is not limited to a certain people group. It is available to all who are in Christ!
With this perspective, we realize our earthly lives are worth nothing in comparison to life with the LORD! Place your confidence in Him alone!

ABOUT THE EPISODE
In the midst of persecution, Paul writes a beautiful letter to the first church in Europe. This letter reminds us of where our ultimate citizenship lies and where we can find our true source of joy as we reflect Jesus in our lives.
Who wrote it?
The Apostle Paul! This book feels linear. It’s a bit different because Paul uses a poem (2:6-11) which is a beautiful description of the Gospel. Everything else nods back to this key poem.
When was it written?
This book was written around AD 60-62, during the same imprisonment of Paul in Ephesians. This was a time of great persecution for followers of Jesus. This is Paul’s way of reaching out from prison to churches he loved!
Who was it written to?
The church of Philippi (see Acts 16 for context). This was Paul’s first stop on his missionary journey. With much Roman influence and a deep love of their country, reminders of citizenship in heaven would have hit this group deeply!
What is the main theme/purpose?
How living as a Christian means seeing your own story as a lived expression of Jesus’ story. Your story is a part of Jesus’ story. We should walk with that responsibility.

In an introduction to the Prison Epistles we’ll be studying this year, Cherie and Tami give helpful context of Paul as he penned these books–written during his first Roman imprisonment when religious persecution was increasing rapidly. In the middle of his imprisonment, he produced three great letters to the churches of Ephesus, Colossae, and Philippi, as well as a personal letter to his friend Philemon. - Big Idea #1: Do not grow weary of doing good
If you are in Christ, you were brought from darkness to light, and the blessing of your story can be used by God to transform lives for His glory! Do not tire of telling your story. Do not grow weary in praying for the salvation of your friends and family. Paul’s persistence in sharing his testimony is a reminder for us to follow suit! - Big Idea #2: Storm-tossed seas, shipwrecks, and the Gospel preached at Malta.
We read many accounts in Scripture where God used storms (literal or figurative) to point people to Jesus, allowing for good to come from pain. The storms we face can do the same. God has a great track record of bringing beauty from pain. - Big Idea #3: Paul witnesses to the Jews in Rome.
Even in circumstances that left Paul on house arrest, and later awaiting his own execution, Paul’s diligence in preaching the Gospel is awe-inspiring. How can we live in a way that elevates God’s purpose for our lives above any other priority?

- Big Idea #1: Paul’s first missionary journey: As Paul sets out on his first missionary journey, we begin to see helpful rhythms emerge as the church seeks wisdom from the LORD through worship, fasting, prayer, and listening to the Holy Spirit. Discernment from the Spirit becomes key as Paul and Barnabas learn to either see God’s power in the midst of man’s rejection OR shake the dust off and move on from rejection.
- Big Idea #2: Saved by Grace Alone: This was a defining moment in Christian history. Before Jesus, the Israelites had been instructed to do things a certain way. Abiding by the law of Moses set them apart. After the cross, it was possible for all people (even the Gentiles who had no knowledge of the law) to be adopted into God’s family and saved.
- Big Idea #3: Paul’s second missionary journey: As Paul and Barnabas part ways after a disagreement, we see fruit from their continued pursuit of spreading the Gospel. Paul chooses Timothy and is able to mentor him to share the Gospel as well!

- Big Idea #1: Jesus promises the Holy Spirit. The timing of this happening at Pentecost was not a coincidence. Jews from all over the world would have traveled to Jerusalem at this time. The Holy Spirit lit the flame of the church, and nothing can thwart God’s plans for His Church!
- Big Idea #2: The marks of the first church: devoted to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. We have so many opportunities for growth in the church as we consider sharing meals, meeting needs, and truly devoting ourselves to prayer. The Holy Spirit was at work, actively growing God’s Church through these four practices.
- Big Idea #3: Stephen’s bold proclamation, the warning against resisting the Spirit, and the first Christian martyr. Stephen’s last prayers were an echo of Jesus’ last prayers on the cross. He surrendered his spirit to God, and he showed grace to those wrongly persecuting him.

- The authorship is widely accredited to Luke. As a second-generation follower of Jesus (not an eye-witness to Jesus’ ministry) Luke was a close companion of Paul. God calls and He equips ordinary people to accomplish His extraordinary purposes.
- When was it written?
- While there is some debate on a precise year, we can best date this book back to the early/mid-AD 60s. It’s doubtful this book would have been written past that, because a few key historical events were not mentioned (fall of Jerusalem, Paul’s death, etc.). It was written in the midst of extreme persecution for followers of Jesus.
- Who was it written to?
- The book of Acts was written to both Jews and Gentiles. The message of reconciliation was presented to both groups, bringing unity in the Body of Christ. Do we usher in the unity of Christ with our presence?
- What is the main theme or purpose of the book?
- The main purpose of Acts is to record a selective history of the early church following the resurrection of Christ. It gives an account of how and where the Gospel was spread.

Who wrote it? John, a Palestinian Jew and the brother of James. The “disciple Jesus loved.” Do we embrace the love of Jesus and let it sink in as John did?
When was it written? Between AD 70 and AD 100. This was a significant time when Christianity was facing much persecution. Are we bold to proclaim the truth of Jesus’ love, even in the midst of a difficult culture?
Who was it written to? Unbelievers with hopes of them coming to saving faith in Jesus and also a Jewish audience who knew the Scriptures, with hopes that they would grow into a rich, well-informed faith in Jesus. Jesus’ love is for everyone. John 3:16 can be understood in a new light when you meditate on it as an adult.
What is the main theme or purpose of the book? Theme: The deity of Christ—that Jesus is the promised Messiah, the Son of God, and that eternal life comes only through believing in Him. Purpose: Highly evangelistic in nature—written to reach unbelievers with the Gospel message of Jesus Christ as well as to strengthen the faith of Christ followers.

Big Idea #1 - The dispute over greatnessWhen the disciples are dreaming of greatness and status, Jesus reorients their thinking and reminds them the greatest must become the least. Where the world values notoriety and fame, God values humility, selflessness, and sacrifice.
What does greatness mean to you?
Big Idea #2 - Denying JesusOur response to the realization of denying Jesus shows our heart posture. Conviction, remorse, and restoration can be your pathway when you mess up as we read in Peter’s story. We can often find opportunities for this restoration by taking a look at our fears. Fear can dictate our decisions toward denying Jesus. But the Lord responds to your godly sorrow with nothing but grace.

Big Idea #1: Love Jesus most.
When Jesus says “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, and even his own life—he cannot be my disciple,” He’s not saying to literally hate them. This is a matter of priority. Is Jesus first in your life—above your love for family, spouse, friends? You are actually loving your family best when you love Jesus most. You can count the cost, but you can also experience the blessings on the other side.
Big Idea #2: Preparing for the Master’s Return
If Jesus were to come today, are you alert? Are you ready? There is this unexpected nature of Christ’s second coming that requires preparedness on our part. Believers should be continually expecting and ready for Christ’s return because the time of His coming is unknown. The enemy is looking to devour the ones who are spiritually apathetic.

Who wrote the book of Luke? Luke! Luke was from the second generation of the early church, so he was NOT an eyewitness of Jesus’ ministry (not one of the 12 disciples) – instead, he compiles as many of the eyewitness traditions as he could.
When was it written? The book was written in the early A.D. 60s, probably around A.D. 62.
Who was it written to? Luke’s broader audience consisted primarily of Gentile Christians like Theophilus who had already “been taught” (Luke 1:4).
What is the theme or main purpose? The life and ministry of Jesus point to the truth that the Gospel is for all, both Jew and Gentile alike.

Big Idea #2: Hated for the Name of Christ–Mark 13:13. We need to be ok that we will be rejected in this world for the sake of Christ but it’s not an excuse for us to be a jerk.
Big Idea #3: Humble Yourself Before the Lord–Mark 14:3-10. Do we reject service and humility because it’s hard? Because we’re entitled? If we do that, our hearts are on a dangerous path where we ultimately reject Christ.

- We tend to overcomplicate our faith—the need to fully trust and obey
- There’s something beautiful about asking “why” as kids do—a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for new discoveries about Jesus
Big Idea #3: The cost of unforgiveness
- A “Dead Sea” mentality is a picture of the unforgiving servant. Nothing living flows out from it.
- Our trespasses against God are greater by far than anyone’s trespasses against us.

Big Idea #1: Find rest in Jesus
- Rather than taking on unnecessary burdens, take the yoke of Jesus. Find out why Jesus says it’s “easy and light.”
- Jesus promises us rest when we come to Him. He is a promise MAKER and a promise KEEPER.
- This is a command to come to Him for rest. And our obedience is surrender.
Big Idea #2: Treasure Jesus
- Is Jesus your highest priority?
- Is He enough?
- We need to love Him first, love Him most, and love Him best.
Big Idea #3: We are commissioned
- It’s a good thing we are sheep! (Because Jesus is the good Shepherd.)
- Even when you face hardship, keep going.
- Don’t become discouraged when someone is not ready to receive Christ. Keep going.
Two ways we can practice our commissioning:
- Create margin (allow space to be interrupted when conversations or people are in your path)
- Tell your testimony (It’s difficult to argue your personal experience of Christ!)

ABOUT THE EPISODE
This week, we are talking through Matthew 5-9! Within this text, we find the longest recorded sermon of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount. Explore with us the ways Jesus raises the bar on what heart transformation means and the intentional ways Jesus chooses to heal.

Jesus raises the bar on what it means for us to follow Him. He desires our hearts rather than simply behavior modification.
The Beatitudes show us how Jesus turns upside down again and again the cultural norms of the day. He shows honor to the humble and lowly, and He reminds us of the importance in what we are hungry and thirsty for.
Used as a repeated command in Scripture, God gives us a cure for anxiety by choosing not to worry. Jesus is our Jehovah Jireh, which means Provider. We do not need to worry, because His grace is sufficient for us every day.
Jesus shows us His willingness to enter into our “mess” when He heals in Scripture. While He could simply say the words, He often chose to physically touch those who were considered “unclean.” His compassion for people overflows within these chapters. In response, what a joy to follow Him by taking up our cross daily, in pursuit of the life everlasting He offers!

We’re diving into Matthew today! Our reading plan has taken us through chapters 1-4 of this Gospel, and in today’s podcast, Cherie and Tami cover the highlights—the genealogy of Jesus, His birth and baptism, and the age-old question of “Why does God allow suffering?”

Matthew 1: Genealogy
God intentionally and counter-culturally includes four women in the lineage of Jesus. You can read about their stories in Genesis 38 (Tamar), Joshua 2 (Rahab), Ruth (Ruth), and all through the Gospels (Mary).
Matthew 2: Jesus’ birth + a tragic genocide
We often ask “Why does God allow suffering?” This might not be the right question to ask. When we reorient ourselves with the truth and acknowledge the world’s depravity, we quickly realize we all deserve suffering, because we have all fallen short in our sin. But God gives love and discipline to His children, not punishment. There is a key distinction to pay attention to!
Matthew 3: Baptism
John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin and a forerunner to point to Jesus as the Messiah. Baptism gives us a beautiful picture as a “tomb and a womb”—a tomb to our sin and old selves, and a womb as we are birthed into God’s everlasting Kingdom!
Matthew 4: Temptation
Each time Jesus was tempted, He responded with Scripture. How different would our approach to temptation be if we knew God’s Word so well that we too responded with, “It is written…”?

4 Foundational Elements in the book of Matthew:
- Who wrote it?
- Matthew wrote Matthew! As a tax collector working for the Roman government and as a Jew, Matthew likely understood loneliness and being despised/rejected from both sides. Even in our own lives, we may feel relational hardships and strains. How can we best reflect Jesus in those moments?
- When was it written?
- Many say the book was written around AD 60, which was approximately 30 years after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension into heaven. With the rise of persecution toward followers of Jesus during those first few decades after the Resurrection, we can hold onto the truth that God is never late. This book was written at a timely moment in history where encouragement for the Saints was needed in the face of such trials. When have you experienced seasons of waiting? What did that time produce in you?
- Who was it written for?
- The book was written by a Jewish man to a primarily Jewish audience. You’ll notice many references to Old Testament prophecies that a Jewish audience would be very familiar with. However, the book does not exclude Gentiles. It can also be seen as intended to welcome and educate this new audience!
- What is the theme/purpose?
- Matthew is an eyewitness account of the life and ministry of Jesus. It was written as an evangelistic tool to see Jesus as the Messiah, which the Jewish audience would have been waiting for!

The Bible is authoritative.
The Bible is inspired.
The Bible is inerrant.
The Bible is purposeful.
The Bible is eternal.
Therefore, the Bible is a book of authority by which we live.
John 1:1 reminds us of the eternal nature of Jesus and His Word.
2 Timothy 3:16 is a reminder that God does speak to us! It’s through His effective Word—the Bible.
2 Peter 1:20-21 is such a word for today. We do not set our own truth, but we look to the authoritative truth of God in Scripture.
Hebrews 4:12 is a clear picture that His Word never returns void. It is powerful.
