Today I run through navigating change providing practical strategies for moving through the stages of behavioural change. I will be doing so by using a short story and highlighting some areas where we need to recognise that change may be required for life improvement.
The Transtheoretical Model, was developed by psychologists James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente in the late 1970s to early 1980s, which proposes a staged model of behaviour change, highlighting the cyclical nature of behaviour change and the importance of readiness, motivation, and self-efficacy.
This model has been widely used in substance abuse treatment, smoking cessation programs, and other health behaviour interventions, showing effectiveness in promoting behaviour change and guiding intervention strategies.
These stages represent a cyclical process of behaviour change, with individuals potentially moving back and forth between stages as they progress toward a sustained change. Understanding these stages can inform the development and implementation of interventions tailored to individuals' readiness for change and support for their journey toward behaviour change and recovery.

In this episode, I delve into a profound revelation inspired by the wisdom found on page 61 of Alcoholics Anonymous and page 421, where the intricacies of human nature are described. I explore, through my experience, strength and hope, the intricate balance between my desire for my rights and expectations, and the chaotic discord that often ensues. Drawing upon the insights of ego, selfishness, and self-centeredness, I uncover how clinging to these notions can lead me to misery, disarray and restlessness, irritability and discontentment.
Through introspection and reflection, I take a deep dive into the path towards serenity by shedding the burden of my rights and expectations and trusting God instead of taking back control.
Within this space, I was able to discover the truth and find a way to relinquish the insanity with the understanding that this construct is not a sign of weakness, but rather a courageous act toward finding freedom, serenity and peace of mind.
My transformative journey helps me embrace the freedom of letting go and find solace in acceptance and serenity.

The first step toward recovery involves acknowledging powerlessness over alcohol or addiction and recognizing that life has become unmanageable. It encourages individuals to admit their inability to control their addiction and to accept that intervention from a higher power is necessary for recovery. This step sets the foundation for the 12-step program and emphasizes self-awareness and humility as essential elements in overcoming addiction.

Day 67: Jung Typology and the Myers-Briggs Personality test.
Personality Type Explained
According to Carl G. Jung's theory of psychological type, people can be characterized by their preference for general attitude as Extraverted (E) vs. Introverted (I), Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N), and Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)
The three areas of preference introduced by Jung are dichotomies. Jung also proposed that in a person one of the four functions above is dominant – either a function of perception or a process of judging. Isabel Briggs Myers, a researcher and practitioner of Jung’s theory, proposed to see the judging-perceiving relationship as a fourth dichotomy influencing personality type, Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P).

This week I hit 260 days in my Sobriety Count, in my spiritual journey and it feels good.
I am truly seeing the benefits of self-care, mindfulness, taking care of my mental health and at the same time working on my business. I am at a point now where I am expanding my presence and awareness of self. Getting to know my emotions and how external factors affect my mood and personal well-being on an hour-to-hour basis. It is pretty vital to change my negative traits and the way I perceive the world and life in general, however, it is more critical for me to change the way I perceive myself on a daily basis.

Social media was awakened to the shooting of Namhla Mtwa, who was killed on the 21st of April 2022, in her car, on her driveway by an intimate partner. This case has now caught the attention of millions of South Africans who are now following, as her family released alarming photographs, a video and messages they found on her phone. Messages that go back and forth between her and her boyfriend.

Over 200 days since my journey began in October 2021, I have made such progress so far and would like to reflect on it.
When my journey began, I was seriously doubtful about what I could accomplish going forward. Because I felt that I had reached serenity once before and it may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I became willing to pursue it and look at it from a different perspective, where it would not be about my family but about me. It wouldn’t be about pleasing anyone else that exists in my life, but just about me.

I want to talk about humility as I have been getting advise as a lot of us get advise from others to humble ourselves. But what is it? What do they mean by humility?
The meaning of humility according to the dictionary is the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance, and when stated in that way, some of us view it as a negative characteristic. I think this is mainly because of what we have been taught about the importance of high self confidence and self esteem. This then sounds contrary to what we know. Let me tell you a story of a woman who was forced to humble herself quickly and then look at my perceived importance of humility.

Today's media reports only on the extremes of life. We are constantly either fed with news about people doing extremely bad things to others or to themselves; or people achieving extremely fantastic things for themselves, others, or the world as a whole.
What is wrong with us being exposed to the extremely fantastic and the extremely wrong things that happen around us? We consciously or unconsciously compare ourselves to those and adjust our own values to meet those standards. We don’t even take into account what our current circumstances are. Whether we would ever be able to meet those standards or not goes straight out of the window, and we then place such unrealistic expectations on ourselves. This leads to us having a miserable existence because we always feel less than what we see. And average has now become mediocrity.

Day 37: Depression and Suicide
In this episode, I talk about depression and the circumstance that may lead to thoughts of suicide.
Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Depression is a word that we use a lot in everyday language to describe feelings of sadness, feeling down or disappointment, however, clinically it is major depression that is more intense, lasts longer, and interferes with effective normal functioning with our normal daily routine.

Today I look at Femicide and Gender-Based Violence; with femicide being the intentional killing of a female, a word with no antonym, a word that was first documented in 1801, and is now defined as, and I quote: “the murder of women by men motivated by hatred, contempt, pleasure, or a sense of ownership of women” and “the misogynistic killings of women by men.” With men recognized as the primary perpetrators.
And Gender-Based Violence refers specifically to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender, rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power, and harmful norms. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue. Physical violence, verbal violence, psychological violence, and sexual violence are the major types of GBV.

We usually believe that the feelings and emotions we experience are determined by external events, situations, occurrences, and behaviors of others. We try to answer questions related to our feelings by referring to what happens external to ourselves. And are quick to blame other people, things, or situations for making us angry, happy, sad, excited, relaxed, and faithful. Meaning we believe that they influence or determine the feelings that we experience. We tend to automatically link these feelings without stopping and analyzing the actual process that makes that link and not noticing the step or the process that lies in between the event and the conclusion. This process is how our thoughts directly influence our feelings.

Today I talk about boundaries, especially in recovery and how important these are for me to implement while travelling on this spiritual path. There is so much information out there on this topic and I am just about to add to all the media that is available. Creating, implementation and maintaining of boundaries is a vital component of self-care, and not taking them seriously for us leads to burnout, resentment, hurt and anger. We may feel that others are taking advantage of us, taking over our space and time, and taking us for granted; which may leave us feeling depleted or overwhelmed. So what is a boundary? In recovery, it is explained as respect for oneself and respect for others, the dictionary defines it as a line which marks the edges or limits of an area. It is a Psychological demarcation that needs to be placed to protect your set limits when it comes to the physical, sexual, financial, intellectual, emotional, your time, and definitely your expectations. Good Spiritual boundaries have to include the honouring of your values, your beliefs and your set goals, and ensuring that nothing interferes with those, which means that you have to set your own boundaries and respect them, so you can ensure that others respect them as well.

So today I would like to talk about the importance of service while suffering, and look at whether it is possible? And what benefits we can have from being of service. And so, first I would like to look at what service actually means within the context of my journey toward recovery. Being of service simply means to be helpful or useful to something, whether it is a person, a group, a community, or a cause, without expectations of a reward. When we are suffering, being of service may be the most difficult action to perform, next to giving gratitude while in pain.
We all suffer from hardships at some point in our lives and I would like to acknowledge that, although the level of hardship may be different from one person to the next, the level of suffering is the same, because it is in the eye of the beholder. Some of us have experienced burdens through loss, illnesses, heartache, disappointment, sudden change that we were not prepared for, broken relationships, and more.

In today's episode, I look at the difference between Complacency and Contentment. Now, what is the difference? Complacency is “a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like; it is self-satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation, condition, or circumstance. It is that wonderful feeling of being fulfilled and comfortable, assuming that things will stay the same, causing us to remain in that comfort zone, doing just enough to get by and keep our life as is. Contentment is having the attitude of working hard and being able to be happy with the outcome of your hard work, no matter what the results are. This is the opposite of complacency really, these two words or ideas are worlds apart from each other.

There are 2 very closely linked words that people in recovery are terrified of. Those words are lapse and relapse, with lapse meaning a slip that ends with you having the ability to return to your life in recovery, a brief resumption of the addiction before quitting again, and a relapse which means a continued downward spiral following a slip, you use again and return to the pattern of behavior and fall back into addiction. When you go through the journey toward recovery and come out on the other side clean and sober, you have a lot to feel good about. The peace and serenity that come with it are absolutely amazing. However, a lot of people in recovery have a fear of relapsing. After winning that hard-fought battle for sobriety, it can be devastating to consider that it might not last forever. Did you know that it is actually relatively common to relapse at some point after staying sober for a while? Both of these need to be considered and discussed openly to reduce the chances of them happening during sobriety, as they are an interruption to the life of recovery and lead to loss of the gained happiness.
Healthy living is key. When we recognize the cravings, the irrational thinking, restlessness, irritability, discontentment, isolation, emptiness, hopelessness, feeling of loss, and stress we need to apply all these tools as our mind is a very powerful thing and can create nostalgia, causing us to forget the negative consequences of our actions while in active use and only remind us of only the good experiences we feel under the influence of our preferred substance, we got it used to. Stay away from people you used to hang out with when you were actively intoxicated, places you used to go to, such as bars, and avoid the playthings that caused the triggers that will most certainly cause a lapse or relapse. And always remember that when it gets really bad and you feel you have lost all power to avoid the negative thoughts, call someone else and see how they are feeling, that might remove the obsession you are feeling at the moment and help you focus on something else.

Gratitude, the quality of being thankful and readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. This word is derived from the Latin word gratia meaning “grace, graciousness, or gratefulness", it is a feeling of appreciation felt by the recipient of kindness, gifts, help, favors, or other types of generosity, to the giver of said gifts. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, being grateful also helps us connect to something larger than ourselves as individuals, but rather to other people, nature, or a higher power. The experience of gratitude has historically been a focus of several world religions. It is important to note that a person who shows gratitude does not seek more, and is content with what they have.
An attitude of gratitude means creating an intention, conscious mindset, and a habit to be thankful, being willing to always express appreciation for all aspects of life, both large ones, and small ones. The attitude of gratitude mindset will make you feel more confident, more positive about your existence, have a more optimistic view of your conditions, it will create more happiness about the things you have right in front of you, and appreciate the people that matter most. We have all heard about the benefits of exercising gratitude and are aware of how to mostly practice it. But we sometimes forget about how powerful it is in the creation of contentment. Throughout life's trials and blessings, displaying a general attitude of gratitude actually increases dopamine in your brain. You know, the chemical that makes you feel good, and encourages your brain to seek more of the same, so in essence, the more you are grateful for, the more you will find things to be grateful for. You can find peace during times of distress, sadness, depression, or anxiety, improve your outlook on life and find serenity.
