Tonight join me as we hear the story of U.S. Marine Sergeant John Peck who lost both his arms and legs whilst serving in Afghanistan.
While serving his first tour, USMC Sgt. John Peck suffered a traumatic brain injury from an improvised explosive device (IED). Once healed, John was determined to rejoin his brothers. Two years later, he returned to his unit in Afghanistan.
During his second tour, on May 24, 2010, John was severely injured by another IED. In that moment he recalls thinking, “I don’t want to die here, please don’t let me die here.” The explosion took both of his legs and his left arm. Later, due to a severe infection, he lost his right arm as well. John was in a coma for three months. It took him over two years to recover.

The Labeling theory is the theory of how the self-identity and behavior of individuals may be determined or influenced by the terms used to describe or classify them. It is associated with the concepts of self-fulling prophecy?. Labeling theory holds that deviance is not inherent in an act, but instead focuses on the tendency of majorities to negatively label minorities or those seen as deviant from standard cultural norms.

No one ever wants to hear amputation as part of their care or treatment from their doctor. But it does happen unfortunately quite too? often. Diabetes and other diseases related illnesses are the causes of most amputations, plus trauma accidents.
Doctor, when can I start driving again?” That’s a common question patients ask when they’re headed for lower-extremity surgery. But it’s not always an easy one to answer. Let's take a look at this topic tonight.

Negative reactions to negative feelings, negative emotions, emotional pain that include depression and anxiety, hate/anger and guilt/shame, as well as problems with coping, relationships, and identity.
It's Not the Negativity but Your Reaction to It - Reacting negatively to negative feelings creates a vicious loop where we feel bad about feeling bad, which can leave us stuck in a cycle of negativity.

After the amputation, amputees face challenges of coping. The loss of function, loss of sensation from the limb and the change in the body image of the person they used to be. These psychological issues often cause negative thoughts and emotions.

Today we have a very special guest on the show. I had an opportunity to speak with via Skype. I hope you will turn in to hear Samoana Matagi, aka “The No-Handed Bandit”.
On December 13, 2010, Sam was involved in an electrical accident while working as a power lineman in Kremmling, Colorado. In a split second, nearly 15,000 volts of electricity surged through his body when a scrap of cut wire hit a live wire.
The No-Handed Bandit makes videos for amputees and their families, showing how to progress from coping to understanding to achievement through videos demonstrating successful methods.

There is an abundance of medical research regarding the preoperative and postoperative physical rehabilitation of the amputee and a comparatively sparse amount on the psychosocial aspects of the healing process.
Let’s take a look at amputee peer support and why it is so important, why it should be part of the normal care process for new amputees.

Today we have a special guest on the show. So, if you like kids and elephants your in the right place for a great story. I personally was touched by this book. And I am looking forward to speaking with Aston Heath.
Aston was born in East Melbourne in 1972. From an early age he enjoyed travelling and picking up languages. He has spent most of his adult life in the Middle East working for a multinational company where he developed a deep desire to follow his passion leaving the corporate world behind. Now he spends his time between Australia, Middle East and Thailand. He gains inspiration from rescued elephants and writing books that help others to simply try again. His books, Mosha the Elephant Who Just Would Not Give Up (Elephants of Thailand Book 2) and Elephants of Thailand: The Smiling Elephant are great for amputees and those who have amputee loved ones.

I have decided to tackle discussing a sensitive issue which impacts everybody in the limb loss community — sex after an amputation. My goal is to be honest without being graphic. I am certainly no expert on the subject. But as a sexually active amputee male who is happily in a relationship, I can speak about my experiences as well as hopefully break the ice on a topic that most think about but very few will address the subject.

Have you ever wondered how your patients will react to the news that an amputation is required or cope with the functional disability that may result? Have you wondered whether psychiatric problems (such as depression and posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) are predictable following amputation? Have you thought about how patients adapt to physical rehabilitation as they regain function?
If you have, then tonight's show is for you. Tonight's discussion should serve as a stimulus for the psychological aspects of amputation and its aftermath.

According to the Amputee Coalition, there are six phases that describe the recovery process of a new amputee. While not everyone goes through the recovery process the same way, understanding these phases can help you to know that your feelings are normal and part of the healing process.

The evolution of prosthetics is a long and storied history, from its primitive beginnings to its sophisticated present, to the exciting visions of the future You have reached a point in your journey where your residual limb is healing after your amputation and you are considering your options for a prosthesis. Or you have one and really have not had anyone discuss with what's it all about. Thinking about your first prosthesis can be both an exciting and scary process. Having one and not knowing what all these items are and how they work can be too.

Prescription drug overdoses are the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Alternatives to opioids for the treatment of pain are necessary tonight we will talk about this issue, MEDICAL MARIJUANA AND AMPUTEES.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention report that “[o]pioids (including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin) killed more than 28,000 people in 2014, more than any year on record.” Unfortunately, this statistic has done little to curb the prescribing and consumption patterns for prescription opioids. The CDC estimates that “since 1999, the number of prescription opioids sold in the United States nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.

Finding Strength To Confront Your Fears is all about living life to the fullest despite your fears. Life after amputation can scary, the unknown, the physical challenges you face, the thought of being alone and the learning curve can be hard.
The way to learn to overcome these fears and obstacles is by recognizing that you're still basically the same person.

Tonight I want to share with you My Path To Advocacy, how I got involved with Amputee Coalition of America as amputee peer visitor and started becoming an advocate for amputees mostly for amputee peer support. But what I have found since working with my company in this industry there is serious need for peer support and a total lack of understanding about the rights of amputees by both medical professionals and patients.
The need for peer support for the emotional aspects of amputation for new and existing amputees is in great demand here in Central California.

This week's podcast subject - Perceptions of Amputation: Have They Changed? - join me as we talk about this and other topics. Back when prosthetics were carved from wood. People didn't have the same perceptions of amputees as this Toyota commercial made it appear on Super Bowl Sunday.
Amputees were viewed as freaks, less of a person, not whole and broken. I sat watching these commercials and could not help think are people more accepting of amputees these days or is this more about making money using well know amputees and celebrities playing amputees? Let's talk about this on Amp Life Talk Radio.
~ Are you an amputee in a film, commercial, or TV? ~ MediaAbility a talent agency for those affected by limb loss, find great people for entertainment projects ~ Perceptions of amputees then and now ~ What has changed?
~ How should we view these types of commercials and movies? As an amputee and an advocate for the amputees, I find this an interesting topic to discuss so that amputees have a voice in these matters because I think sometimes the few (most popular) are considered and all amputees are included. I am sure there are a lot of feelings and opinions on this subject.

This week’s podcast subject – Inspiration
Ronald Mann, who is he? Most of you in the Central Valley may not know the name but those of you in the other countries who listen to this show sure do know the and man. I have the privilege to speak with Ronald the other for the show. His story is truly amazing and at the same time relatable to those of us who have lost a limb. Ronald is Mixed Martial Arts Competitor, disabled Vet (combat medic) and the person behind The UAEJJF's Para Jiu-Jitsu Tournament.
Like any other person who suffers a traumatic injury and then undergoes an amputation, Ron faced the same struggles as any other amputee. The emotional trauma, the pain, and doubt. The feeling of not being complete and less of the person who you were but Ron didn't let that keep him down.
I had an opportunity to talk with Ronald about his life and his journey. Please join us to hear his amazing story.

This week’s podcast subject – Welcome to Amp Life Talk Radio, – The official launch.
I have completed one season of podcasts where I touched on several topics and developed the format for this show. Using the first season to test the waters per-say. I was able to get a feel for what works and what doesn’t work as I studied show stats, became my own worst critic, listen to other podcast, picked up some ‘Pro” tips from John Lee Dumas – Podcast Launch and learned my way around developing a home studio. I am now ready to take this show to the next level. Please join me!

Phillip Wilson Interview - 6:46mins.
We discussed his return to work as an AKA and at 28 years of age, he is a great example of what can be done if you have motivation not to let the amputation limit you and your ability to get back to work. He had to go through all the obstacles of getting medically cleared to return to work which can be frustrating for you. But he stayed the focus and on course.
Body Image: He was encountered with questions from co-workers as most are just curious. And once they hear your story move on with the day-to-day work activities. He settled in and was working normal as possible.
Communication is key with your employer to let them know of any limitation you might have or concerns performing certain functions. But overall he is back at work and I hope to help him get additional resources.

Health insurance can take many forms and the specifics of what an individual policy covers, the cost of premiums, the level of deductibles, and the requirement for co-payments will all vary from policy to policy. If your an amputee you may require the care of a prosthetist, which means you will have many visits for adjustments and sockets replacements. Most people think that once you become eligible for Medicare or you have insurance coverage, all of the coverage and payment problems that are pervasive in the private health insurance industry magically disappear.
But in fact, Medicare and private insurances focuses significant energy on reducing inappropriate payments and over-payments to healthcare providers. How to justify Medical Necessity of advanced prosthetic. This what we will be talking about on the show today, Join me.

For those of us who have experienced a life-changing illness or trauma must come to terms with the difference between our new self-image reality verses the previous self-image. Although there are several studies regarding amputation affecting body image, we are going to be discussing some of the factors dealing with restoring your positive body image.
Focusing on one specific change in appearance, the Amputee Coalition of American reports that there are roughly two million people living with limb loss in the United States with nearly 185,000 amputations occurring each year.

Living a full life requires being with family and friends, attending sports games, watching kids grow up and going to work. These things we do define and give purpose to our life. Interaction and communication are vital to our emotional well-being—it’s in our nature as social beings. But living with limb loss can make you feel like a stranger in a strange land, especially if you are a new amputee.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can happen for lots of different reasons. They don't all have to do with war.Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD let's take a look at this subject and hopefully shed some light on why some amputees suffer form this and what they can do. Most survivors of trauma return to normal given a little time. However, some people will have stress reactions that do not go away on their own, or may even get worse over time. These individuals may develop PTSD. People who suffer from PTSD often relive the experience through nightmares and flashbacks, have difficulty sleeping, and feel detached or estranged, and these symptoms can be severe enough and last long enough to significantly impair the person's daily life.

Overuse syndrome is well documented in amputees, where additional and atypical amounts of time and pressure are borne down through the intact limb. Over time, this can and will cause early degeneration of the lower back, hip, knee and ankle resulting in discomfort and other complications. This becomes even more important if there are injuries to the intact limb, which make it even more critical that the prosthesis be designed to evenly bear the load and smooth out every step in your gait.

Could You Choose Amputation?
For prosthetists, therapists, and other members of the rehab team, limb loss presents a threshold to new possibilities-a first step toward functional mobility. For the individual struggling with the decision to sacrifice a body part, amputation is often a horror too alien to grasp.
Amputation is a powerful and scary word. It is a decision most could never imagine making and one you would do anything to avoid.

Relationships, no matter what kind, almost always have a positive influence on our physical and emotional lives. While some relationships are merely friendships, other relationships involve close emotional bonds and without either type of relationship, we can feel lonely.
As an amputee dating, relationships and Intimacy can be a struggle for amputees. But being an amputee can throw some additional issues into the mix. Amputees often find it difficult to share their concerns about body image and relationships. It is with physical intimacy that the amputee fears the greatest possibility of rejection.
Let's talk about this topic.

Surgery of any kind is accompanied by fantasies of helplessness, mutilation, loss of control, body image distortion, castration, rejection and death.
As you age, you may face:
Feelings of dependency Depression Helplessness Loss of control of your body and life Financial problems Reduced social life Physical illness, pain and other medical or health problems.
All of these problems will likely be intensified when an amputation occurs. Change is hard after all. You have lived decades with the way your body has looked, and you have used your limbs to do things without much thought. Now what you have taken for granted – the way you look, the way you move – has to be looked at in a different way, and you have to readjust to the world.
So What Do You Do?

The main objective in the rehabilitation of people after amputation is to restore or improve functioning, including return work. However many have problems returning to work and continuing to work. Returning to work and life after an amputation can be hard, let's discuss some of the issues facing those with limb loss and returning to work.
Are these individuals generally satisfied with their employment? Are similar trends observed in individuals with upper-limb amputations? Do people return to their pre-amputation vocations? If so, how many require workplace adaptations? How common is workplace discrimination and where is it more likely to occur?

The socket is the most important part of any prosthetic limb, if the socket doesn't match the residual limb's anatomy exactly, problems can occur. Optimal socket function is the most important aspect to the success of the prosthesis as a whole. Today's environment of technology has seen trimendous strides in advancements in prosthetics but research must focus on improved socket design and technology, acquiring clinical data and subsequent analysis, and delineating the ideal clinical outcomes that determine clinical success. Let's talk about why the socket is the most importnat part of your prosthesis.
I will have a special Guest Host for this show:
Taylor Blackwell
Executive Director of Patient Care
Norell Prosthetics & Orthotics

This is a tough topicbecause there is a culture of negligence among patients in our country. Often they fear that if they go to the doctor with a foot problem, it might lead to amputation. They fail to understand that delaying foot care, after an injury or after developing an ulcer is what leads to amputation.
This show I would like to discuss some ways to knowledge of foot care for a diabetic, prevention and care. I will cover some tough topics that my get under your skin a little but these topics needs to be discussed as they may save your foot or life. I hope you will join me.
Amputation at any level is accompanied by distinct problems of functional loss, prosthetic fitting and alignment problems, and medical problems such as skin disorders that are secondary to the use of the artificial limb. Partial or total loss of an upper limb can also be associated with similar complaints.
This show will cover common skin problems and danger signals associated with the wearing of a lower-limb prosthesis.
Episode 8
This is Part Five of Pain and Phantom Limbs
I will be discussing the results of a survey from 19 organizations belonging to World Veterans Federation. Where the major complaints of amputees include; poor fitting, poor dissemination of knowledge to doctors and amputees regarding new prostheses, lack of opportunity for "input" from amputees at research level and inadequate measures to deal with phantom and stump pain.
Disscussing how this study can help you as amputee communicate what your needs snd expectations are for a functional prosthesis.
This is Part Four of a series on Pain and Phantom Limbs.
Finding a treatment to relieve your phantom pain can be difficult. Doctors usually begin with medications and then may add noninvasive therapies, such as acupuncture or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. What works, well let's take a look at what's out there and recommended.
Since the great French military surgeon Ambroise Paré first described what was to become known as phantom
limb sensation in 1554, the presence of phantom limbs has been reported almost universally.
This is Part Three of the series on Pain and Phantom Limbs.
Phantom limb pain is one of the number sources of pain for amputees. In addition to pain in the phantom limb, some people experience other sensations such as tingling, cramping, heat, and cold in the portion of the limb that was removed. We will discuss phantom limb pain and other sources of pain related to amputation.
The reality of life for amputees, certainly for those who use a prosthesis, is that there will sometimes be pain. It may be felt as residual limb pain, phantom limb pain. This a topic that all amputees must deal with and there are so many aspects to it, I decided to do a series of shows on it.
There are many types of pain. Lets look at them.

Those who suffer from limb lost weather planned or unexpected need to learn to navigate the world in a new way and navigate the thorny area of health care coverage. The choices you make or don't make could affect your ability to get the proper prosthetic device.
We will talk about some of these issues that you should be aware of the insurance companies will not tell you.
Life After Amputation
Losing a limb is life-changing. How much life changes depends on variables that make the challenges facing each person unique.
Special guest host, Don Mcguire
Award winning photograher with UFC,Bellator ect. MMA world Rankings, Host of The Fighter's Voice, Photographer for Las Vegas at UFC on FOX and Photograher at Ultimate Fighting Championship. Studied at Cal State University Sacramento. He is also an amputee who has been through the ups & downs of limb loss but didn't let stop him from doing what he loves. His story is trully inspiring. I've invited him on the show to share it with you all.
When an individual undergoes an amputation, whether through trauma or a planned surgery, they experience a wide range of emotions from stress and anxiety to depression and anger. They may feel alone and unsure of what the future holds for them after their amputation. Through utilization of a peer visitor or support group, not only will new amputees receive valuable information that will help them in their new way of living, but they will get to see a real life example of what they will be able to accomplish with a few years of hard work.
