We kick off the episode by discussing Elefteria's favorite essential oil, lemongrass, which she appreciates not only for its delightful aroma but also for its versatility and calming effects.

This leads us into a broader conversation about the role of chemistry in aromatherapy—a topic that often intimidates newcomers. Elefteria candidly shares her own struggles with chemistry during her school years, emphasizing that understanding the basic functional groups in essential oils can empower practitioners to make informed choices without needing to delve into complex organic chemistry.

Throughout the episode, we explore how essential oils are composed of various chemical compounds, each with distinct properties. Elefteria explains how recognizing these patterns can help build a "clinical instinct," allowing practitioners to predict how an oil might behave in different contexts. We also touch on the importance of blending oils with both therapeutic and aromatic qualities in mind, ensuring that the final product is not only effective but also pleasant to use.

Safety is a recurring theme, as Elefteria highlights the need for caution when working with certain compounds, such as furocoumarins in citrus oils and sensitizing aldehydes. We discuss the concept of quenching, where certain oils can mitigate the irritant effects of others, and the importance of patch testing, especially for individuals with sensitivities or respiratory issues.

As the conversation progresses, we delve into practical tips for essential oil storage, oxidation, and the significance of keeping detailed notes on blends. Elefteria emphasizes that while essential oils can be incredibly beneficial, they must be used responsibly to avoid adverse effects.

Listeners will gain valuable insights into the chemistry behind essential oils, practical blending techniques, and safety considerations, making this episode a must-listen for anyone interested in enhancing their aromatherapy practice.

In this episode of the Vetiver Vibes podcast, we dive into part three of our series on safety dilution, focusing specifically on dermal dilution and its importance based on where you apply essential oils on your body.

As Certified Clinical Aromatherapists, Rachael Dean and Nikki Fraser, are thrilled to share our insights and expertise to help you use essential oils safely and effectively.

We begin by discussing the significance of proper dilution, especially when applying oils to sensitive areas like the face. We recommend a dilution of 0.2% to 1.5% for facial applications, emphasizing the need for caution due to the delicate nature of facial skin. We also touch on the importance of avoiding essential oils near the eyes and suggest alternative remedies, such as herbal tea compresses for issues like styes.

Next, we explore the world of aroma massage, which is one of our favourite practices. We discuss the appropriate dilution rates for body massages, recommending a range of 1.5% to 3%. We share personal anecdotes about our experiences with aroma massage and how to adjust dilutions based on individual needs, particularly for clients with dry skin.

Moving on to body and bath applications, we highlight the importance of diluting essential oils in carrier oils before adding them to bathwater. We provide practical tips for creating your own bath blends, ensuring that listeners understand the necessity of proper dilution to maximize therapeutic benefits.

We then address specific issues such as dermal wounds and pain management, where higher dilutions of 4% to 10% may be appropriate for short-term use, not chronic conditions. We stress the importance of consulting with a clinical aromatherapist for guidance in these situations, as well as the need to start with lower dilutions and gradually increase as necessary.

Throughout the episode, we emphasize the principle of "less is more" when it comes to essential oil usage. We want our listeners to feel empowered to use essential oils safely, ensuring that they can enjoy their benefits for years to come.

As we wrap up this three-part series, we encourage our audience to revisit parts one and two for a comprehensive understanding of dilution principles. We are passionate about spreading the word on safe essential oil practices, and we hope you find this episode informative and helpful in your aromatherapy journey. Thank you for tuning in, and we look forward to sharing more insights in future episodes!

In this episode of the Vetiver Vibes podcast, hosts Nikki Fraser and Rachael Dean continue their safety dilution series, focusing specifically on dermal dilution by age. As Certified Clinical Aromatherapists, we understand the importance of using essential oils safely, especially when it comes to children and the elderly.

We begin by discussing the varying dilution ratios needed for different age groups, emphasizing that the essential oils suitable for babies can differ significantly from those for adults. Our chart outlines the recommended dilution percentages for various age ranges: from infants (0-3 months), babies (4 months to 24 months), to young children (2-6 years), and then older children (6-16 years) and adults (16+ years). We stress the importance of starting with lower dilutions and gradually increasing them as necessary, while also highlighting that sometimes essential oils may not be needed at all.

A significant portion of our conversation revolves around the safety of using essential oils on babies. We share personal anecdotes about our experiences as parents, particularly the challenges of dealing with diaper rash and the careful consideration we took when choosing to use essential oils like Roman chamomile and lavender. We caution against using certain oils, such as clove, on infants due to their potential risks.

We also touch on the importance of proper dilution, especially for sensitive skin, and the need for a risk-benefit analysis when deciding to use essential oils on children. As we move through the age groups, we explain that while young children can handle slightly higher dilutions, it’s still wise to err on the side of caution and use the lowest effective percentage.

Additionally, we address the topic of using essential oils with the elderly, emphasizing that frail skin requires lower dilutions and that hydrolats can be a safer alternative, especially for those on oxygen therapy. We remind our listeners that aromatic use of essential oils can often provide the desired benefits without the need for topical application.

Throughout the episode, we encourage our audience to reach out with questions and to download our free dilution charts available on our website. We conclude by inviting listeners to tune in for the next episode, where we will delve deeper into dermal dilutions and their applications.

Thank you for joining us for this informative discussion on essential oil safety and dilution by age. We hope you find the insights shared here valuable for your aromatherapy journey!

In this episode, Nikki interviews Amayra Morales about rosacea and its connection to the gut and what we eat.

Amyra Morales. Amayra is an Ayurveda digestive health coach who focuses on helping women manage rosacea so they can glow from the inside out. Amayra hit her lowest health point in 2018 and through a series of fortunate events ended up in India and that was the beginning of the end because this is where she discovered Ayurveda and was able to get to the root cause of her health, and this is when she was told that, "rosacea is not a skin condition" whaaaaat?! According to Ayurveda skin conditions are in fact a manifestation of something deeper within.

In this episode, Nikki and Amayra talk about

  • How the skin is our biggest organ and a window into what is happening inside the body.
  • What brought her to Ayurveda to support her in her own struggles with rosacea
  • What rosacea is - 4 types
  • How it is typically treated in Western medicine
  • How it is not a skin issue, but is caused by inflammation in the gut, excess heat in the body
  • 3 causes of rosacea - Stress, Diet, Emotions

Diet

  • If diet is the cause, start to eat a low histamine diet, and cut out gluten, and dairy, and foods that are warming to start. Also cutting out stimulants, and alcohol.
  • Eat easily digestible foods, stews, soups, and cooked food over raw. Some heating foods such as cinnamon, garlic, and onions can be replaced with other foods and spices. Instead of garlic try asafoetida, an Indian spice, and instead of onion try a fennel bulb.

Emotions and stress

  • Incorporate medication and mindfulness practices
  • Go for walks
  • Grounding practices
  • Breathwork every day

It is also important to look at

  • Not only what we eat, but how we eat it. Eat mindfully.
  • Ayurveda looks at your dosha and the 5 elements to bring you back into balance.

Remember to start slow. It can be overwhelming but one step at a time

  • Start with a morning routine, and only do one thing at a time before moving on to the next.
    • Tongue scraping
    • Oil pulling (make sure you spit in the garbage, not the sink!)
    • Etc
  • Then move on to hydration
  • Then move on to a night routine

Amayra has 2 programs.

  • One-month quick realignment program
  • Three months - Cleanse, Nourish, Glow

She goes step by step on how to support the body with rosacea.

Discover the art of working with moon energy. This is a two-part series where this episode will go over the second half of the moon cycle. Listen to Part 1 AromaLunar Insights With Navigating The New Moon Glow.

In this episode Nikki shares with Rachael how she works with the moon from Full Moon up until Waning Crescent. She also goes over some go-to rituals and activities which include; fear releases (dissolving paper, burning notes, etc) and forgiveness ceremonies such as cord-cutting and ho'oponopono (I Love You, I'm Sorry, Forgive Me, Thank You).

Full Moon

It’s time to celebrate. The moon in its fullness. The energy is high, energizing, uplifting. It can bring light and clarity into the darkness.

Your intentions are materializing. It’s time to be thankful for what you have, and what you’ve achieved. Celebrate achievement, write our gratitude lists, take some time to be happy.

Time to reflect back also, is there anyone that needs forgiveness, any situations that you can let go of. Let go of what isn’t serving you, and replace it with gratitude. Really focus on being grateful, bring in that vibration.

Waning gibbous/Disseminating

We are now in the phase for reflection, just breathe, you’ve earned a small break after all the hard work. The light of the moon starts to diminish, and your confidence in yourself might as well in this phase. The high intensity of the full moon can cause a slump in our energy.

Time to regroup, look back on your intentions and actions and see what worked well, and what you can change for next time. How can you pivot if you need to. What could you have done differently?

Third quarter

We see the half moon again in the sky, but now we see the left side of the moon as it gets closer to the new moon. We are 7-10.5 days after the full moon.

Start to look internally as to what needs to change, adjust, let go of, clearing out the old, and what isn’t serving us. Give yourself a hug for all you’ve accomplished.

Reflect on what blocks are holding you back.

Don’t play the blame game, but look into yourself, what is happening internally that isn’t serving you. What are you limiting beliefs? What bad habits do you want to break free of? We want to start clearing space for the new moon that’s just around the corner.

Waning crescent/balsamic moon phase

We are coming close to the new moon again, the moon is coming too becoming smaller and smaller in the sky. Clearing out what is cluttering and dont need anyone to make room for new again with the new moon around the corner.

Don’t be afraid to let go!It’s time to release, cleanse, clear out and bring to an end what isn’t serving you.

Some essential oils to use this half of the moon phase include oils for letting go, clearing energy, and grounding.

  • Frankincense
  • Cedarwood
  • Peppermint
  • Juniper berry
  • Lavender
  • Firs

Discover the art of working with moon energy. This is a two-part series where thi episode will go over the first half of the moon cycle. In this episode Nikki shares with Rachael how she works with the moon from new moon up until full before the full moon.

  • There are 4 quarters of the moon cycle, or 8 phases. New Moon, Waxing crescent, first quarter, Gibbous moon, Full moon, gibbous moon/disseminating, third quarter, waning creasing/balsamic, and back to new moon. In this podcast we are going to cover the first half - New moon to Gibbous moon.
  • Moon cycle is 29.5 days, there are 13 lunar months in a year.
  • Working with moon energy at its highest is the day before, the day of, and the day after each phase starts.
  • Some great ways to incorporate aromatherapy into moon energy practice can include: scent bags, bath salts, mist to set an intention, clear energies, charge candles, anoint objects, salt ceremonies, fear releases, and any other tools you use.

Some go-to essential oils that we like to use can include oils that help foster clarity and creativity.

  • Clary sage
  • Lemon
  • Bergamot
  • Rosemary
  • Sweet orange
  • Myrrh
  • Peppermint
  • Black pepper
  • Coriander

New moon or Dark moon

The moon cannot be seen in the sky, we see her shadow side.

What do you want to bring into your life and space over the next month? Ask yourself the hard questions that you’ve been avoiding. Sort through what isn’t serving you. We want a clear path to be able to grow, planting new seeds. Time to think of what you want to manifest, see happen for yourself.

Salt ceremonies are great to put in your wishes/ goals and manifestations.

Waxing crescent

Energy is rising. We are starting to feel hopefully, positive energy growing with the growing moon. The intentions that you set in the new moon phase, now you’re in the creative phase. You want to make plans to achieve your wishes and goals that you made in the new moon, be specific, no room to be vague. Write down what you’re going to do, and what are the actionable steps you’re taking to reach your intentions.

First Quarter

We see half of the moon in this phase. We are now 7-10.5 days past the full moon.

This is the time for breakthroughs, making changes, and getting some ahah moments.

This can be a tipping point, for reaching a goal. The work needs to be done, it takes effort, and action to break through any limiting beliefs that may be holding us back. Double down on what you want. Speak up and don’t be afraid to voice to yourself and others what you need.

If you’re starting to doubt yourself, write out some affirmations to remind yourself you’re a badass and can do it!

Waxing Gibbous

An important part of going from one phase to the next.

This is often when people also want to give up, or think they can no longer do it. You may need to pivot or tweak a bit to refocus on where you’re doing but don’t tweak out of fear.

The plans that you made in the waxing phase, make sure you’re following through with them. This is a good time to get back into any routines that you may have stopped doing or let slip. Still in the building phase, so if you plan to restart something do it now.

In 2009, she decided to move to Canada where she started writing. It was then that she discovered essential oils and it was love at first sight.

In this episode, Nikki goes through an actionable exercise to help break through limiting beliefs. Letting go of old beliefs, setting new goals, and moving forward.

Nikki originally participated in a similar exercise in a live presentation in a program by James Wedmore.

If you can write out your answers by hand, this would be ideal. Handwriting can help to connect more with thoughts and deep emotions. If handwriting isn’t possible, and typing is, that is still a good way to document your answers.

  • What is my limiting belief?
  • How do I feel about this belief?

In this episode, Rachael and Nikki chat about the importance of thinking outside the box and looking at the big picture. This is important for everyday life situations and also for students studying a course. Being able to use critical thinking is an important tool to have.

We discussed:

  • The importance of thinking outside the box
  • When you’re learning about a new concentp, look at what you did understand, read it again, look up words you don’t understand to get a better understanding.

In this episode, Nikki and Rachael share their own personal experiences of going through a healthy eating program on their journey to finally and forever health.

We both completed the Spring session of Gina Livy’s Livy Method program. It’s a 91-day program that we both love for many reasons and wanted to share how we were able to transform our lives with it.

It is a weight loss program, but Nikki sees it more as a healthy eating program to focus on wellness, with the added benefit of losing weight.

Neither Nikki nor Rachael are affiliated with the program, we do not receive any compensation from the program.

Some of the things we loved about the program include

  • We have never eaten so much food in our lives!
  • No counting, weighing, measuring, or doing weird shit
  • Community support
  • App to track, which is lifelong access
  • Science posts that go deep into topics
  • Becoming in tune with your body’s needs
  • More energy, less brain fog, better awareness of self
  • How to eat to satisfaction
  • How to kickstart the metabolism
  • Importance of sleep and reducing stress when it comes to weight loss

In one program session, Rachael lost 23 lbs and in two sessions of the program, Nikki lost 30 lbs. Both feel better which has had a positive impact on not only their physical health but also mental health and relationships with many around them.

Putting ourselves first, and getting back to feeling good in our skin, we wanted to share that you can make yourself a priority too!

Aromatherapy was not used to help curb any cravings but can be used to help with a better night's sleep, reduce stress, and bring our nervous system back into balance.

Essentria was a proud sponsor for the conference, and can’t wait to see how the CFA will continue to support its members.

We also want to thank the Board of Directors for the CFA who put on this event. As Rachael and Nikki are both past board members, as past Vice-President, and past Education Director, it is known firsthand how much work is involved. The hard work and dedication is very much appreciated.

In this episode, Nikki goes over 3 questions that Essentria received in an email, and myths that have been floating around on the internet for a bit.

The first question was whether using Essential oils can release volatile organic compounds (VOC) and change the air quality.

Nikki shares

  • What VOC really means
  • How to diffuse essential oils safely, not diffusing for hours on end
  • What could happen when diffusing for too long
  • What is being diffused matters

The second question was if essential oils can harm the skin barrier

Nikki goes over:

  • The importance of diluting essential oils when applying topically
  • Carrier oils have their own therapeutic benefits, and essential oils are always needed
  • Hydrosols are great options to use
  • Some essential oils have max dilutions and it is important to not apply them topically over the maximum recommendation
  • Some essential oils are prone to sensitization and should be used cautiously

The third question was regarding the sustainability of essential oils and if they should be used.

Nikki goes over:

  • The importance of proper farming and harvesting
  • The needs to talk and share about the importance of sustainability more
  • Checking the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species to stay current on what plants are threatened https://www.iucnredlist.org/

In this episode, Rachael, Rhonda, and Nikki go over Essentria’s Dermal Dilution for specific conditions guide which shows how much essential oil you could use depending what your blend’s purpose is, and where you are applying it on the body.

If you haven’t listened to part 1 or 2 of this 3-part series, check out episode #31 and #32.

  • You can find the Dermal Dilution guide here, along with all our safety charts https://www.schoolofessentria.com/eo-safety-charts
  • Remember to start at the lower percent for dilution
  • The importance of having a lower percentage when applying on the face
  • Specific dilutions for aroma massage, and situations where chronic pain occurs
  • Bath and body products such as sugar scrubs, body butters
  • For specific issues, it is still important to start low and slowly increase the essential oils in the blend if needed.
  • When it comes to specific conditions, it is important to consult with a trained certified aromatherapist who can make sure the blend being used is safe.

Remember LESS IS MORE! Start at the lowest dilution. You can always go lower than what is stated If needed you can gradually increase the essential oils used.

Don’t forget to print off your dilution guide. You can laminate it for long term use!

n this episode, Rachael, Rhonda, and Nikki go over Essentria’s Dermal Dilution by Age guide which shows how much essential oil you could use depending on the age of the person using the blend.

If you haven’t listened to part 1 of this 3-part series, check out episode #31

  • You can find the Dermal Dilution by Age guide, along with all our safety charts https://www.schoolofessentria.com/eo-safety-charts

It is very important to take the age of the person using the essential oils into account.

Kids are more sensitive and need less essential oils than adults, and many times aren’t needed at all.

  • Carrier oils and hydrolats are great options to use without essential oils
  • Do NOT round up your drops. If a partial drop is recommended, round down to the last full drop. Example: 2.5 drops would mean you can put up to 2 drops.
  • Refer back to our safety Dilution Chart to know how many drops are needed for a certain percentage.
  • You do not need to smell the essential oils in your blend, they will still have therapeutic value.

Remember LESS IS MORE! Start at the lowest dilution. You can always go lower than what is stated If needed you can gradually increase the essential oils used.

Don’t forget to print off your dilution guide. You can laminate it for long term use!

Stay tuned for episode #33 where we explore how we should dilute for different situations.

In this episode, Rachael, Rhonda, and Nikki go over Essentria’s Blending guide which shows how much essential oil you need to add to a carrier oil to reach your desired dilution.

The blending guide is based on Health Canada’s guidelines that 20 drops = 1ml

We stay on the conservative side, and agree with the 20 drops = 1ml

  • You can find the blending guide, along with all our safety charts here - https://www.schoolofessentria.com/eo-safety-charts
  • To find information on aromatherapy in Health Canada you can search here - https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada.html

The Blending guide is ideal to reference when

  • Blending by drops and need to know how many drops to add to a certain amountof ml of carrier oil.
  • It is important not to go over the 5% dilution is most situations.
  • Do NOT round up your drops. If a partial drop is recommended, round down to the last full drop. Example: 5.5 drops would mean you can put up to 5 drops.
  • It is better to have a lower percentage of essential oils and apply the blend more often, than a higher percentage.

Remember LESS IS MORE! Start at the lowest dilution. If needed you can gradually increase the essential oils used.

Don’t forget to print off your dilution guide. You can laminate it for long term use!

Stay tuned for episodes #32 and #33 where we dive deeper into safe dilution.

Host of the Essential Aromatica podcast, Amy also tends her own aromatic garden on the North Fork of Long Island where she distills her unique products.

Listed as one of America’s most influential aromatherapists for 2022, Amy Anthony is currently the New York State representative for the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and has her private practice called NYC Aromatica which includes one-on-one customized aromatherapy sessions, online class offerings, corporate consulting and article writing.

Some of the conversations that were chatted about includes

  • Blending
  • How the aroma of a blend is important
  • The art of blending
  • The importance of aromatherapy associations and the awareness of proper aromatherapy
  • The importance of getting to know the plants
  • Carrier oil

And so much more!

One of our favourite quotes as Amy and Nikki chatted is when Nikki stated ‘Essential oils won’t change natural habits.” Aromatherapy can support us, but a good reminder that they can’t change natural human habits.

Episode 24.5 - BONUS!!

In this episode Nikki goes through an actionable exercise to help break through limiting beliefs.

What is my limiting belief?

How do I feel about this belief?

What is causing me to choose to feel this way?
