The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated disparities surrounding economic inequality, racism, and a host of social issues that result in the devaluing of life. The CDC, local departments of public health, and other agencies post numbers showing that communities of color and economically disadvantaged groups have been hardest hit in rates of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. While these numbers tell us what is happening, they do not capture the experience of the pandemic or how community groups have responded where institutions have failed. Our podcast, Healthy Disruptions, features pandemic stories to highlight the lived experiences of COVID-19 across our communities in Southern California. Healthy Disruptions is supported by a grant from the University of California Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI), the University of California Riverside (UCR) Department of Anthropology, the UCR Center for Health Disparities Research (HDR@UCR) and its Community Engagement and Dissemination Core (CEDC) and it is implemented in partnership with Cal Poly Pomona (CPP). We would also like to thank the StoryCenter in Berkeley for training and support.
