Are you ready to support your doula clients using the most powerful tool on your belt?
In this episode, I am joined by my favorite author, Henci Goer. We are chatting about the impossibility of unbiased maternity care, and what you can do as a doula to help.
To put it lightly, mainstream obstetric research can be… dodgy. It rarely considers the mother’s well-being and is highly motivated by control, economic gains, and legal protection. Putting the research into mom’s hands will give her the confidence to make evidence-based decisions during her birth experience, and give her a better chance at the birth outcome she has envisioned.
Henci is an acknowledged expert on evidence-based maternity care, an award-winning medical writer, and an internationally known speaker. Her most well-known book is “Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities,” which is used and referenced widely across the childbirth community.
If you’re tired of hearing doctors push their non-evidence-based opinions, then you’ll wanna listen up!

Have you ever wondered if you, as a doula, how you can actually help impact the declining state of maternity care in your community?
In this episode, Jessica Johnston and I will be talking about the broken maternity care system and how it’s affecting marginalized communities.
Jessica Johnston is the Director of Development for the Pacific Birth Institute, as well as a midwife in Anchorage, Alaska. Strategy and large-scale organization for efficiency in training models are one of Jennifer’s greatest strengths. In her past life, she helped organize, open, train, and restructure four restaurants in her first 14-year career as a server and front-of-house manager. But now being a midwife and a steward of the legacy and longevity of midwifery, she gets to take that same passion and apply it to the infrastructure of regenerative community-based maternity care access for clients and providers alike.

Ever wondered why so many new doulas quit within the first few years? Wanna know how to be the 1% that doesn’t quit?
Today I’ll be diving into the top three reasons most new doulas end up leaving birthwork within a year or so of starting their business.
It really doesn’t matter how much you know about birth or how much you love supporting women… If you don’t have the right tools, you either won’t be doing this work for very long or you’ll spend a very long time trying and trying and trying, but never hitting your goals.
If you want to learn how to persevere through the most common pitfalls of birthwork, then you wanna listen up!

Wanna know the secret to kickstarting your online birth business offerings in less than two weeks?!
Creating an extensive, in-depth, high-production online birth course takes a lot of time, and not everyone has that extra time to spare in the beginning stages of their business.
They need to create something quick and pain-free, yet valuable to kickstart their online offerings… Introducing mini workshops! They take just under two weeks to execute, and I can’t wait for you to learn how to host one yourself.
In this episode, Sarah Tempte and I will be talking about how simple it really is to create, sell, and host your very first online mini workshop.
Sarah is a co-founder of Wake Up To Freedom, where they help business owners create simple offers that give them their time back. After spending years working with big influencers to build online courses, create marketing funnels, and enroll thousands of students, she wanted to show small business owners & side hustlers how easy it could be to launch a profitable online training. Now, thousands of people have used their Mini Workshop method to create, launch, and sell short virtual workshops — on topics like baking, photography, spreadsheets, dog training, and more! Ready to completely up-level your ability to advocate for your doula clients by learning this ONE THING?
In this episode, Dr. Kirstin Small and I will be talking about the widespread use of fetal monitoring in pregnancy and labor, and why it doesn’t line up with the evidence.
The systems of power in obstetrics use cherry-picked evidence to push procedures/practices (like fetal monitoring) that benefit them financially, and protect them from litigation. If they aren’t sharing the WHOLE truth of what the evidence says…it makes you scratch your head and ask, “Who is really benefiting the most here?”
Dr. Kristin Small is a retired specialist obstetrician and gynecologist. She currently works as an educator, writer, and researcher. She strives to promote and protect respectful maternity care for women, babies, families, and their care providers through education and research. Dr. Small has performed extensive research on Central Fetal Monitoring for her PhD, and continues her research today.

Did you know that exercise can positively impact your doula clients’ births BEYOND just the physical stuff?
In this episode, Emily Stanwyck and I will be talking about all the (not so obvious) ways doulas can approach the fitness conversion with their clients.
Committing to fitness can be tricky during and after pregnancy, and it’s easy to want to avoid it altogether… but it’d be a disservice to your doula clients to not talk about the benefits consistent movement has on the entire perinatal period.
Emily Stanwyck is a mom, wife, birth doula, birth educator, and BIRTHFIT Leader. She began her journey into the birth world through fitness as a BIRTHFIT Coach. Through her work with moms in the gym, she began educating herself and attending births as a doula.
She has attended many births over the past 7 years, but nothing gave her a greater insight into the birth world than diving head first into her own experience through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum in 2018.
To put it lightly… Emily is kicking ass in the birth community.

Hey birthworkers, how far will you let the hospital system push you? When will you decide to make a better path for yourself and your clients?
The process of becoming an OBGYN is long and hard… and it’s easy to get used to the systems of authority, but working the hopital isn’t the “only way.” Nathan shares the story of his career from med school all the way through to putting in his two weeks as a hospital OBGYN. Nathan is literally changing the landscape of women’s healthcare outside of the traditional medical system.
In this episode, Nathan Riley and I will be talking about supporting moms both inside and outside of the hospital system.
Nathan Riley lives in Louisville, Kentucky. He is an OBGYN, ACOG, works as a hospice physician, and has a telehealth practice: belovedholistics.com.
He also runs a collaborator program for independent midwives, doulas, and other healthcare professionals, which is where he invests the vast majority of his time. In this program, he provides one-on-one consultations, peer reviews, orders meds, labs, imaging and more.

It rarely takes into account the mother’s well-being and is highly motivated by control, economic gains, and legal protection.
Putting the research into mom’s hands will give her the confidence to make evidence-based decisions during her birth experience, and give her a better chance at the birth outcome she has envisioned.
Henci is an acknowledged expert on evidence-based maternity care, an award-winning medical writer and an internationally known speaker. Her most well-known book is “Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities,” which is used and referenced widely across the childbirth community.

Are you ready to help your doula clients stop blindly relying on pharmaceuticals and instead, get to the root cause of their pregnancy and birth symptoms?
In this episode, Sapna Matharu and I will be talking about how doulas can use homeopathy from pre-conception through postpartum.
Traditional pharmaceutical medicine treats singular, specific symptoms with medications that act as a crutch, masking the symptoms temporarily. Whereas homeopathy looks at the person holistically and triggers the body to heal itself and return to its normal function.
Sapna Matharu is a qualified homeopath and educator who specializes in fertility, pregnancy, and birth. She hosts several different workshops and courses for birthworkers, new moms, expectant moms, and women who are trying to conceive.

How can you help your doula clients feel comfortable advocating for themselves in an environment that pushes total compliance?
In this episode, Dr. Stuart Fischbein (from Birthing Instincts) and I will be talking about the many issues within the hospital model of care.
It's no secret that there are large systems of power in the hospital system, which is why many doctors keep their heads buried in the sand when they see unethical policies put in place.
Dr. Stu has been a practicing OBGYN for the last 34 years. He advocates for informed decision-making and specializes in natural birth for VBAC, twin, and breech deliveries.
He founded The Woman’s Place for Health, Inc., a collaborative hospital-based practice of Certified Nurse Midwives and Obstetricians in Ventura County, California. He co-authored the book, “Fearless Pregnancy, Wisdom & Reassurance from a Doctor, a Midwife and a Mom.”, and has appeared in several documentaries, including: “More Business of Being Born”, “Happy Healthy Child”, “Reducing Infant Mortality”, and “Heads Up: The Disappearing Art of Vaginal Breech Delivery”.
Dr. Fischbein also runs “The Birthing Instincts” podcast with midwife Blyss Young, where they discuss evidence-based decision-making in birth.
If you’re tired of overreaching hospital policies, then you might want to listen up!

Do you believe it’s possible for birth doulas and OB-GYNs to actually get along?
In this episode, Dr. Nicole Rankins and I will be talking about how doulas and OB-GYNs can work together with respect and collaboration.
The data is crystal clear that having a doula during labor immensely improves birth outcomes… but sadly not all physicians are supportive of doulas.
In this episode, we dive into why OBs and doulas need to stop trashing one another and focus on supporting the woman giving birth through productive conversation.
The best thing we can do for our clients is to connect on a human level first.
Dr. Nicole Rankins is a practicing OB-GYN who supports advocacy and empowerment in childbirth. She runs a top-rated podcast called “All Things Pregnancy and Birth” where she discusses supportive, evidence-based information, as well as stories from parents and moms-to-be.
Nicole also has an online course that helps moms prepare for birth and understand the importance of advocating for the birth experience they want.
