Robin Ferris is the CEO and Founder of Bankuet.

Volunteering in his local food bank, Robin saw firsthand the challenges that food banks face and how they would struggle to meet the continued increasing demand.

Robin wanted to build a tech platform that would make it was easy and simple for people to donate, whilst making their money go further. And also making sure food banks got the food and items they needed, when they needed them.

In 2019, Bankuet was born with the vision for no one in the UK to go hungry. Since then, they have partnered with over 300 food banks across the UK and delivered over 2.8 million food and household items to help tackle food poverty.

Dan Garrett is the CEO and Co-Founder of Farewill.

For everyone, losing a loved one is one of the hardest things you’ll need to deal with. Trying to process your emotions, whilst having the pressure of deciding on funeral plans and dealing with probate. Dan recognised the opportunity to innovate an industry that hasn’t changed for 100’s of years, even though everyone will need to use it at some point in their life. So Dan founded Farewill to build a tech platform that focuses on making it as easy, simple and affordable as possible for people to deal with death and provide a meaningful goodbye to their loved ones.

Farewill is now the largest will writer in the UK, and one of the largest providers of probate and direct cremation services, and with a 4.9 rating on Trustpilot and multiple awards for their services – they must be doing something right!

Felix Atkin is the CEO and Founder of Sharesy.

During COVID Felix started to explore why local schools weren’t renting out their unused spaces to generate much needed additional income. Most still took bookings via pen and paper, on average requiring 30 interactions before a booking was completed. This was frustrating for both the venue and the booker.

Felix recognised this was a much wider problem with community spaces– church halls, scout huts, community centres – they all had unused spaces that they struggled to rent out.

Enter Sharesy. In a few simple clicks, people can find and book spaces in their local community. Their unique model operates on a success only basis, so venues can sign up for free and only pay when a booking is made.

Sharesy are on a mission to help local communities to thrive, by encouraging people to book local venues and put money back into their community.

Charlotte Guzzo is the COO and Co-Founder of Sano Genetics.

Whilst studying for her PhD, Charlotte witnessed first-hand the challenges with finding the right patients for medical research. After further exploration it was apparent the whole system was flawed.

Due to issues with patient recruitment and engagement, 80% of clinical trials fail. This means potentially life saving drugs and treatments will never reach the market. It’s a poor situation for everyone, researchers and scientists are unable to trial new medicines, and patients are reluctant to participate in research.

Sano have solved the problem by using technology to connect all these different parties in a more effective way and remove the headaches that previously existed. They enable organisations to quickly and efficiently recruit and engage the right patients, they take care of the genetic testing and data analysis, and ensure patients keep up to date with the latest research and findings.

Highlights:06.49: The issues with “traditional” medical research
13.22: Sano Genetics overview and fixing the problem

For our last show of Season One, we have Youssef Darwich, the Co-Founder and CEO of Nosso.

Now I’m pretty sceptical of fintech’s but Nosso are building something very different. Nosso focus on helping families to use their money in a smarter way to build both a better world and a better future for their children.

Using the Nosso app, families set a goal like buying a first house or paying for school fees. They select the product that best suits them, then anyone in the family can contribute to that goal. Each time a family member contributes they can leave a message or video for the recipient, creating a unique time capsule of special memories for when they’re older.

Beckie Taylor is the Co-Founder and CEO of Tech Returners.

From her own personal experience of taking time out to have her first child. Beckie realised the barriers that exist for people returning to work in the tech space. Although there is a huge demand for tech talent, sadly, those that take career breaks are often overlooked or ignored.

So Beckie set up Tech Returners to combat this problem. Tech Returners run programmes that allow people to brush up on the soft and technical skills they need to feel confident about returning to work. These programmes are sponsored by tech companies, so they are completely free for returners and offer them employment at the end.

When you consider over 80% of their applicants are women and they have an average of 12 years’ experience in tech, it’s mind-blowing that more companies are investing in returning talent.

In this episode, Beckie shares her views on the barriers for people who take career breaks, the current state of diversity and inclusion in technology, and her lessons in building a tech for good business.

Highlights:

04.45: Why do people take career breaks and how does it affect them returning to work?

Ari Last is the CEO and Founder of Bubble.

After becoming a parent, Ari was shocked by the lack of innovation in the childcare space and set out to change this.

In this episode, Ari explains the challenges in building a marketplace for users that are trusting you with the most valuable thing in their lives, their children.

Bubble achieves this in two ways:

  1. Using social proof as the key to building trust with parents. Who are you going to trust more than someone vouched for by a friend or family member?

  2. Secondly by giving the power back to the parents. Historically childcare agencies would just send a nanny to a family, with Bubble the parents decide which nanny they use.

Tune in to hear how Ari has grown the UK’s largest on-demand in-home childcare platform, with over 200,000 families and 100,000 carers on the app.

Highlights:

04.52: The current state of childcare, in-home versus out-of-home childcare options

07.15: Why is the childcare system so broken?

10.30: The evolving role of the employer and childcare support

21.14: How do you even go abut building a childcare marketplace?

Lenny Leemann is the Co-Founder and CEO of Greenspark.

Lenny’s personal mission is to make it as easy as possible for consumers and businesses to do good. His first tech for good venture MAMOQ, was a marketplace for sustainable consumer products and he’s now building Greenspark.

Greenspark was founded on the belief that the only way to embed “doing good” into businesses for the long term, is to show that it will positively impact their revenue.

Greenspark makes it easy for companies to link positive climate action to the behaviours they want to encourage with consumers. So, every time an order is placed, a tree is planted or every time there is a newsletter sign up, a piece plastic is removed from the ocean. This creates a clear, tangible connection between consumer action, positive impact and revenue.

If Greenspark can make this the new normal for businesses, then there is a real opportunity to drive positive change on a global scale.

Highlights:

06.28: Who can have the biggest impact on climate change? Individuals, businesses, or governments.

09.27: What is Greenspark?

13.38: Lenny’s early stage startup advice – launch early, iterate quicky and never give up.

17.48: The factors that go into choosing their impact partners and projects

24.50: The challenge of pricing, balancing revenue generation versus funding impact actions

30.21: What makes Greenspark unique to other offerings in the market?

33.55: The second time building a startup with his best friend and wife-to-be

36.01: Don’t outsource your tech, even in the early days

Emilia Molimpakis is the Co-Founder and CEO of Thymia.

Emilia has spent over a decade studying Neuroscience with a specific focus on using language as a marker to assess and monitor mental health.

The current method for assessing mental health is very basic and subjective and hasn’t changed in over ten years. So when her best friend suffered depression and tried to take her own life, Emilia created Thymia combining her passion for linguistics, gaming and mental health.

Thymia use video games to track micro expressions to assess someone’s mental health state more accurately and objectively. Which means clinicians can use their limited time on what matters, diagnosing and treating their patients.

Daniel George is the Founder and CEO of StepEx.

From his own experiences, Daniel was shocked by the barriers to education for those from lower income backgrounds. Imagine wanting to do an MBA or software development course, but not being able to afford the course fee with your only other option being hit with 30-40% interest on a loan.
