Guest Melvyn Purvis ("The Greatest G-Man In History") recalls a real safe cracker he met while tracking down John Dillinger. The script was used on "Lux" previously on September 30, 1935. + The story begins behind the grey walls of the state penitentiary. Valentine, played by Pat O’Brien, is called into the warden's office to be told he is to be freed the next day. He promises to go straight and on his release he desperately tries to find a job. Nobody wants to employ an ex jailbird and Valentine finds it hard work surviving. He is constantly being pursued by a cop called Doyle who framed him in the first place and is hell bent on seeing Valentine back behind bars. //
58:46 ... Conversation Piece -- A Frenchman tries to pass off a nightclub singer as nobility. + A flippant period piece of entertainment> The sort that operettas of that time were made of. It begins in a Paris café in 1809. A well dressed gentleman stands by an open window. He is approached by a pretty young lady. The conversation is all about forming a business partnership between the two of them. Their intention is of course to swindle some rich gentleman whom they have yet to find. //

It begins in the Kane house in Gentryville Indiana, where Elmer’s brother can’t understand why his brother won’t sign for the New York Giants. Even Nelly thinks he shouldn’t pass up the opportunity. But what she doesn’t know is that Elmer is crazy about her and doesn’t want to go away ands leave her.
1:00:35 ... The Curtain Rises -- A shy woman decides to take acting lessons in order to play love scenes with her instructor. Ginger plays the part of Elsa Carling and Warren Williams is Ronald Phillips The play opens at a gay party which is taking place at Carol Stewarts New York penthouse. Everyone appears to be having a great time, everyone, that is, except Elsa Carling who is in the foyer putting her coat on. There is the suggestion of a tear in her eye and she is approached by the hostess who insists she mustn't leave. But Elsa is just as insistent that she should. As the door closes behind her the men are heard to comment. She’s too prim and proper and she ought to get rid of those spectacles.

Victor Young is interviewed and plays one of his compositions. Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck are also interviewed (Donald does his imitation of Bing Crosby!). A comedy about a wealthy businessman from Omaha and his adventures on the high seas and in Algeria. + Comedy in which Wallace Beery plays the part of American millionaire Earl Tinker the owner of a large meat packing company in Omaha. He is taking his wife and daughter on vacation and the opening scene takes place in the stateroom of a steamship crossing the Atlantic Ocean on its way to Algiers. ||

Lardner is said to have patterned the character after baseball player King Cole.

The Outsider was a 1931 British drama film directed by Harry Lachman and starring Joan Barry, Harold Huth and Norman McKinnel. The screenplay concerns an unorthodox osteopath who cures one of his patients, the daughter of a fellow Doctor. It was made at Elstree Studios and based on the 1923 play of the same title by Dorothy Brandon, previously made into an American silent film in 1926. The film's sets were designed by Wilfred Arnold.
Film actor Harold Huth's performance was voted the best in a British film in 1931. The film was remade in 1939 as The Outsider with George Sanders and Mary Maguire in the leading roles.

The story was produced on The Lux Radio Theatre again on December 28, 1942 (see cat. #30814). + Judy Garland plays the part of a small town girl who rises to big screen fame. The story begins in the bedroom of a small farm and a young girl is lying on the bed sobbing, The door opens and the girl's grandmother comes into the room and she gives her some money and tells her to go to Hollywood and follow her dream.

Note: A planned interview with Amelia Earhart was postponed to the next week due to a delay in her soon-to-be doomed attempt of an around-the-world flight.
The well-known comedy about the newspaper game and the escaped killer hiding in the roll-top desk. Amelia Earhart's appearance is announced as being postponed. The final half minute has been deleted from the closing, the story is unaffected. The female lead was scheduled to be Joan Bennett, but she could not appear due to illness and Josephine Hutchinson was substituted. . + We take up the story in a newspaper office in the City of Chicago. Walter Burns the managing editor played by James Gleason, is shouting down the phone to one of his staff. He tells him to find Hilde Johnson his ace reporter and tell him that he has to cover the hanging of Earl Williams at Cook County Jail the following morning. But the guy on the other end keeps telling Burns that Johnson has gone on his honeymoon.

The script was used on the Gunsmoke television series on November 16, 1957. A couple of cowboys have had a bit too much to drink and are harassing the ladies on the high street. Chester goes to ask them politely to leave the ladies alone as they don’t want any trouble. But trouble is what they are going to get from Marshall Dillon after they rope Chester and drag him out of town.

Plot: A woman who comes between a man and his estranged son. The man, a carnival barker, is in love with a dancing girl and is ambitious for his some to become a lawyer. However, the son hops a freight to join the carnival.

Storyline: Jacob Terry moves to the county to raise sheep and installs a wire fence. This upsets the neighbors, as they worry their dogs will enter his fence to terrorize the sheep. Jacobs vows to shoot any dogs or people that enter his land. Then Jacob's dog disappears, and tempers rise. The movie was released February 15, 1936 and based on a novel of the same name by MacKinlay Kantor. The Ford Theater adapts the popular theater production of Carmen Jones to radio. Carmen Jones with an all black & brown cast. It was, turned into a popular movie with Dorothy Dandridge, Pearl Bailey and Harry Belafonte in 1952. This episode aired November 16, 1947. Radio Cast: Irving Barnes, Valerie Black, Maurice Ellis, Oscar Hammerstein (narrator), Juano Hernandez, Howard Lindsay (host), Luther Saxon, Earl Sidner, Muriel Smith. Carmen Jones is a 1943 Broadway musical with music by Georges Bizet (orchestrated for Broadway by Robert Russell Bennett) and lyrics and book by Oscar Hammerstein II which was performed at The Broadway Theatre. Conceptually, it is Bizet's opera Carmen updated to a World War II-era African-American setting. Bizet's opera was, in turn, based on the 1846 novella by Prosper Mérimée.

Screen Director's Playhouse helps us bring in the month of June with their drama titled, Let's Live A Little. A radio production of the comedy film of the same name (1948). This episode aired January 16, 1949. Plot: Bob Cummings reprises his original film role of a stressed out advertising executive, Duke Crawford, whose most important client has already changed her mind three times on their current ad campaign. Michelle Bennett was also Duke’s former fiancée and still has eyes for him. Duke’s boss tells him what he needs is a break and he gives him a book called Let's Live A Little that he hopes will reduce his stress. This week we’ll listen to JEZEBEL, the first episode from the Academy Award Theater series. Ms. Davis won the Best Actress Oscar for her role (hence being on this radio production). Academy Award Theater produced 30-minute adaptations of Hollywood films or famous novels. Not all the films were award winners, but they did all have at least one Oscar nominated actor, that’s the connection to the series name. The series had a short life, from March 1946 to December 1946... reason being it cost upwards of $4000 to pay each star actor / actress per episode and another $1600 to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for using their name. A lot of money that sponsor, E.R. Squibb & Sons a pharmaceutical company referenced as “The House Of Squibb" (now known as ‘Bristol Myers Squibb’) was unwilling to keep paying, and the series was canceled.
