Happy Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! While we have seen some amazing progress and triumphs for the global API community in the past few years, we should also recognise that there’s still so much we could do better for people outside and within the community. This AAPI Heritage Month, we invite you all to acknowledge and honour what was, and embrace instead of pushing back change and progress. While we are at it, let’s also give some love to all Asian diasporas around the world - Asians in Europe, South America, Australia, Africa, ESEA in the UK and more!

For this week’s episode, we sit down with Filipino American PR Professional Jessica de Jesus, who was born in the Philippines and raised in Southern California. Having lived in Manila, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Hong Kong, Jess talks to us about her experience growing up Filipino-American, moving to Asia, and the culture shock that she’s experienced along the way.

World Mental Health Day 2023 Special: Being a firstborn (and Asian) is no joke! You're the unpaid intern, the guinea pig of the family, the role model to younger siblings, the babysitter, and maybe the "retirement plan" for the parents. It is not a "job" you could just quit. And you carry the weight of high expectations, responsibilities, and the perception that "you've got it all figured out" for your entire life.

Fellow firstborns, we are dedicating this episode to you: What it's like being the eldest child, your feelings, and how you can set boundaries and take care of yourself in this heart-to-heart chat between two very tired firstborns who are finding ways to break the "curse" of being the eldest in the family. Our guest Mara Muñoz from Manila - a model firstborn - talks about fighting her sister with real knives. Isabel talks about how she is a "firstborn who gave up".

Happy World Mental Health Day (Oct 10)! We hope you are making taking care of yourself a non-negotiable priority today - which frankly should be an everyday priority. Give yourself some extra TLC, take the time to breathe, put away digital devices and delay replying to messages if no one’s life is at risk just because you’re not replying immediately. Breathe. And take all the time you need.

For this very day, we are talking about burnout again. Because we STILL don’t talk about burnout enough. This episode, Hong Kong-based entrepreneur Mandy Pao joins Isabel to chat about their personal experiences coping with burnout, and how Mandy bounced back stronger and started helping fellow entrepreneurs to overcome burnout.

What are the signs of burnout? How do you identify them? And what are the tangible steps you can take to work your way out of burnout?

Season 4 is here! Oral traditions are an important part of the cultural identity of many Southeast Asian countries, but their ephemeral state leaves them vulnerable for future generations.

Malaysian artist-researcher duo Ambi Sun and Sha Roose join us to talk about the oracle deck they are creating “Tales & Oracles of Eleven - Mythology from Southeast Asia”. The oracle deck features 44 legends from 11 Southeast Asian countries including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor (Timor Leste), and Vietnam. By turning the folktales we grew up hearing from our parents, grandparents, and cultural elders, the duo hopes to ensure these tales are not lost or forgotten over time.

Sun tells us about the biases she has faced as an Asian female artist, while Sha talks about her experience living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Known for its natural wonders, sacred sites, iconic rice paddies, wondrous beaches, and a food scene that's far from boring, there is no further explanation needed as for why tourists love Bali. But beneath the surface of this idyllic paradise lies a growing concern among the local Balinese population. As tourism returns after the pandemic, the island has witnessed an influx of visitors from around the world. “Wow, you got fat!” - In Asian cultures, commenting on one’s weight is often considered a “harmless” way to greet people. But that does not make it okay! While fat shaming is not just an Asian issue, some values and practices in Asian cultures are actually feeding into a toxic body image that causes unrealistic expectations of how one’s body should look.

Body Banter Founder Steph Ng joins Proudly Asian to talk about toxic body image in Asian cultures. She also shares tips on how to empower people around us to openly talk about body image and mental health topics on their own terms.
