“The theme of this mix is a certain new age sound and flavor from 80s recordings. I traced this sound through the work of many Japanese artists (hence the Shibas on the cover) and I would say this became the backbone of the mix: music by the legendary Haruomi Hosono, Yuji Toriyama and many more. The vibe is unique and experimental, a new age-y, jazz-rock-y type of deal. I’ve been quite inspired for a long time by the character and creativity of this era; something about the guitar and instrumentation gives it that special touch. Personally, as a producer, I’m a big fan of Yamaha instruments, in particular the DX7, which I’ve come to associate with this time in music. Though Japanese artists are the central thread, I’ve made a kind of fusion of many different things that to me capture this special flavor.”

This is a recording of a set originally streamed live on VPN Radio on the 4th of July. Saish (aka SwarJi) had hit me up that morning and asked, since we were all stuck at home for the holiday (and feeling more than a bit skeptical of the spirit of patriotism), if I wanted to join him for an impromptu stream and play some music--less as a celebration of the 4th than an angsty refutation. Naturally I pulled some drum & bass records and adjacent 'fast music' for channeling these feelings! As the stuck-at-home-reading-heavy-news days stretch on I think that we're all still feeling a need for some kind of defiant catharsis, and I hope that this can help someone out there to achieve that! I made this mixtape to soundtrack the research and writing process for my Master's thesis, which I completed last semester. The idea was to find songs that made me feel focused, but not edgy, with a tendency towards gentle dissonance and rhythms that are so subtle they almost disappear. Usually I listen to really emotional or intense bangers at all hours of the day, and while I wouldn't call this an "ambient" mix, it's as close as I'm likely to get, with a balance of quiet jazz, abstract electronics, and a bit of New Age synth stuff. I hope that, for those of you heading "back to school" this semester, it will get you in the headspace to read and write a lot without falling into the vortex of panic, stress, and bewilderment. – @max-pearl-bk

When you were a kid, summer represented everything good in life - freedom, adventure, excitement. Even for those of us who had summer school or a job, summer still seemed filled with endless opportunities for a good time. As you get older and the reality of adulthood begin to creep in, summer starts to lose its luster and becomes just another 3 months on a calendar. The smell of a warm summer night doesn't have the same sweet aroma. The relaxation and excitement of a vacation is spoiled by the ever-looming return to work. The mix I made here embodies that change from the wide-eyed elation of childhood to the harsh reality of an adult summer.
