Trixie and Weej love horse racing and sharing it with new fans! Hear about upcoming events, amazing equine athletes, and strange doings that make this sport fascinating and exciting! Our free Community at http://www.33xpl.com offers exclusive lessons and fresh, funny stuff weekly. (We're at Pinterest and Instagram, too.) We love jokes, but love đ´ more. We support reforms with regard to medications, standards of care, and treatment during and after thoroughbred racing careers. We desire sparkling ethics, so we can enjoy the sport and encourage others to join us! Happy Racing, Ya'll!
Quickie picks as we survey the probable field for Saturday, June 25thâs Mother Goose, a G2 stakes race at Belmont for 3 year-old fillies at 1 & 1/16 miles on the dirt (as God intended).
This may be the comfort food and stretchy pants of the racing weekend, but we donât have time for anything else, so here goes!
4:28 Weej is annoyed by Radio Days, who annoys with annoyances. (Echo Zulu casts a looong shadow over this motley field.)
5:41 We both đ the adorable Jujuâs Map, a favorite since the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies. In good health, Brad Coxâs filly is best in class and at this length, we think.
9:04 Chad Brownâs Gerrymandered might be mis-matched, since sheâs never competed at this length. Is this an experiment?
10:55 Shahama. How can we compare her when all the winning was in the UAE?
12:12 Venti Valentine. Stinktastic, or just twice as bad as Shahama using horse algebra?
13:21 Favor is another Pletcher horse, whose development arc is mysterious. We love to see a spark here, butâŚ
15:25 Nostalgic is our second favorite for this race, should she (or any of the others mentioned) actually be in it come Saturday. đ Yes, she crapped a diaperload in the Oaks, but we still think sheâs got promise.
16:40 RĂŠpublique, the last probable from Saffie Joseph, is lightly raced. Weej thinks thereâs possible speed. Trixie can be convinced sheâs a hidden treasure at 50-1.
We love making jokes, but love đ´ more. We encourage and support widespread reform with regard to equine medications, standards of care, and treatment during and after thoroughbred racing careers. We desire sparkling ethics, so we can enjoy the sport happily and encourage others to become fans, too!
HAPPY RACING, YAâLL! đ Trixie and Weej
We ADORED the Belmont Days of racing last Friday and Saturday! Maybe our favorite race cards of the year! Timestamps follow as always.
Forget the complaints about small fields, there were almost no undercards, the calliber of horses and races were so good!
3:03 Fridayâs Race 9, the True North G2 showed what a baller (and a boy) Jackieâs Warrior is.
5:15 Fridayâs Race 10, the New York G1, had 4 Chad Brown entries, including the great Bleecker Street, Family Way (an Uncle Mo kid) and Flighty Lady, who came in for Trixie.
8:15 Saturdayâs Race 2 was an allowance where Weej won with Uncle Moonlight, progeny of⌠who else?!
8:43 R3, the Acorn G1, ended up with the 4 horses of the Apocolaypse after Echo Zuluâs late scratch. Matareya dominated.
10:21 The Just a Game G1 turf, R4, offered a nice story for Peter Brant, owner of Just a Game, and now, of winner Regal Glory.
12:51 R5 was the Brooklyn G2, which Fearless won for Weej.
13:32 R6, the Woody Stephens G1 crowned Jack Christopher as a Elite đ LEGEND. Perhaps his between-race breaks are to return to his home planet or have a complete replacement of his cybernetic organs.
16:14 R7, The Ogden Phipps, was a pace meltdown for Letruska and Search Results. Shaking our heads at Ortiz bros. Clairiere stalked and walked into the Breeeders Cup Distaff with her Win. Finally Steve Assmussen can smile again đ
19:20 Jaipur G1 turf was Race 8. Casa Creed won and gets a free pass to the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint.
20:38 In Race 9, the Metropolitan Mile, speedball Flightline dazzled with his quality, of course! đĽâ¤ď¸âđĽ Heâs invited to the BC Dirt Mile, canât wait!
22:18 Tribhuvan won the Manhattan G1, Race 10, and Weej got paid!
23:57 The main event was R11, the Belmont Stakes, and Mo Donegal, who was the champion of our đwon in convincing fashion! Filly Nest also impressed us. Skippylongstocking ITM again! Could Rich Strike be heading for snippage?
31:13 Royal Ascot is next week, We still have Japanâs Mermaid and Unicorn, and Belmontâs Mother Goose in June. Then, in July, Saratoga and Del Mar re-open! Summer racing is the ballz.
Weâre smacktalking through 9 races, including the Big, Bad Belmont Stakes! See timstamps if youâre impatient, or relax and luxuriate!
3:41 Saturdayâs Race 3- Acorn G1, $500k for 3yo fillies. 1 mile on dirt. 5 horses, FULL FIELD REVIEW
7:09 Tiny fields are the theme of the day! Show up in a saddle, get paid. Nice for lazy handicappers who want to bet Pick Races like mofos (we plead guilty!)
13:01 We Still Adore filly Echo Zulu, despite the Oaks
14:31 Race 4-Longines Just A Game Turf G1, $500k F/M 4+. 5 horses, PICKS
15:53 Race 5- Brooklyn G2, 1 1/2 miles on dirt, $400k, 4yo. 7 horses, PICKS include Lone Rock and Warrant. Whatâs up with Max Player lately?

31:09 Race 8- Jaipur G1 on Turf, 6f, $400k. 13 horses find us too lazy for anything but brief analysis. đ
33:16 Race 9- Metropolitan Mile G1 on dirt for $1 Million! 5 horses, FULL FIELD REVIEW. We are psyched to see Flightline here!
40:55 Race 10- Manhattan G1, $750k, inner turf, 1 1/4 miles. 4yo+. Fat Purse! 10 horses, PICKS.
44:53 Main Event Belmont Stakes G1, the Test of Champions, Third Jewel of the Triple Crown. 1 and 1/2 miles on the dirt as God intended. $1.5 million in purse money.
FULL FIELD REVIEW begins with We the People, a colt in which chef Bobby Flay has just acquired significant interest.
50:27 Skippy Longstocking (Trixieâs still annoyed after Preakness)
51:04 The filly Nest is unraced against colts. Pletcherâs strategy?
52:45 Rich Strike at 7/2 will not be unnoticed anymore.
55:25 Can Creative Minister come into the money again?
56:13 We are dying to see Mo Donegal get a huge WINâ we think he deserves it.
57:24 Golden Glider may be (shhhh) a nice longshot option
59:04 Barber Road in the final mix?
59:45 Fridayâs card at Belmont also offers some great races: the 2-mile Belmont Gold Cup G2 for $400k, the New York G1 for $750k on the inner turf, and the Intercontinental G3 turf sprint

28:38 As sure as sun and rain, there will be outrages and heartbreaks before the Belmont. Itâs horse racing.

1:44 Kentucky Oaks Reaction and Analysis
2:36 Secret Oath Rolls âEm and Smokes âEm, Decisively!
3:23 Herd Dynamics Mattered!
4:20 The Arkansas Derby indicated greatness to us
5:00 Chewing up the field, one-by-one for half the race
6:25 Echo Zulu, Nest, and rest of the fillies
6:55 Queen of the Show (Trixie) had called out Desert Dawn as a possible Long-Shot to finish in the money, and she did!
8:39 Where was Kathleen O.?!
9:05 The Joy of Being Right is Another Delight of Horse Racing!
10:15 Onto the Feel-Good Kentucky Derby Story!
10:30 The Freakfest of 20 Horses is always a mad spectacle
11:19 Last minute entry breaks the record for longest-odd winner. Even his trainer, Eric Reed, understood the long odds on paper
13:00 Rich Strike loves the rail and so does his jockey, Sonny Leon. Ran from the 20th post, as outside as possible
15:20 Herd Dynamics also visibly AT PLAY during the Derby
16:10 Leonâs Mid-race zigzagging. Fast starting pace cleared an inside lane. Rich Strike had enough length to close the deal and then some.
17:40 The horse had no history with the rest of the herd to overcome.
18:10 Rich Strike was savaging his lead pony like a crazy ass afterwardâwhich we dearly hoped was only nervesâ Yay, clean drug tests affirm heâs just nuts đ¤Ł
19:45 Most people were FINE with losing personal bets in favor of witnessing an amazing Derby and historic outcome! The sport needed it!
20:44 The unsung-till-now trainer and owner and jockey have fascinating stories following some hard knocks.
22:30 Eric Reed picked up this former claimer, having correctly assessed him as a dirt, not turf, colt
22:52 Trixie, the Queen of the Show Bet, also put some on Rich Strike and got PAID!
23:58 Weej is tickled that âfun factorsâ of betting worked better than studying prep races for months
24:50 The importance of the Crazy Factor! (R.I.P. Midnight Bourbon.)
26:35 Great for occasional fans to see that genuine outsiders can prevail!
27:34 What about Sore Losers?!
28:00 We bet on Epicenter to Win and he Placed. Still a Great horse!
29:16 Rights will be negotiated. People will want to relive this in print or on screen.
30:50 Weej couldnât even sleep after the excitement of the Oaks.
31:08 Yes, Show Bets can pay. This Derby, a $2 bet paid out about $30.
32:00 Weej wasnât ever totally settled with her Derby bets. Trixie ended up accumulating a combo of 9 different horses picked to winânone did!
33:15 After next weekâs Preakness draw, weâll discuss that race & the filliesâ Black-eyed Susan on May 20th/21st at Pimlico in Maryland.
33:48 Recapping Taibaâs, Messierâs, TiztheBombâs, and White Abarrioâs finishes and prospective futures.
35:20 Can Rich Strike win the Preakness? Could Secret Oath?
35:55 The Quick Tips video for Derby Beginners STILL APPLIES to the upcoming Preakness and Belmont.Be Better Informed! Have More Fun! (Link at Top)

HAPPY RACING, YAâLL! đ Trixie and Weej
The fully-illustrated version of this conversation on our YouTube channel of the same name has loads of fun, helpful graphics, so go check it out if somethingâs unclear! https://youtu.be/xv14DhiF7RY America's oldest sporting event is the most prestigious thoroughbred horse race in the world. We made this crash course to help brand new fans or anyone attending a Derby Day event who wants a little handholding. Here are the topics we cover:
00:28 Nicknames for the race
1:06 Who started it? Why and When?
3:54 How old are the horses? What's the difference between the Kentucky Derby and Oaks?
4:44 How do horses get entered into the Derby?
6:30 How can you pick a winning horse?
8:00 What's meant by "handicapping" and what should you consider?
8:15 Length of track and post position
9:30 Examining past performances of horses (You don't have to torment yourself with racing forms if you're a newbie.)
12:10 Learning from the research/analysis of others (You can gather enough to be dangerous or have a nice conversation!)
14:40 Weather considerations
15:10 What can you learn by observing the pre-race Post Parade?
18:40 How are betting odds written and what do they mean? How do long or short, high or low odds convey bettors' views and payout amounts?
23:30 How do odds look on the racetrack's tote board?
24:40 Explaining Straight Bets for Win, Place, and Show, meaning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers. Win bets always pay best, but are riskier than Place and Show bets.
26:25 Calculating return with a simple win example. In horseracing, when you win a bet, the outlay (price) of that bet is returned to you along with your winnings to add up to your total payout.
28:53 Betting "Across the Board" combines 3 straight bets into a popular combo, also shown as WPS (Win-Place-Show) or W/P/S. This can dilute your risk and enhance your payout if you select well.
31:30 Bettors get rewarded, so to speak, for the degree of difficulty required in choosing the winner(s).
32:35 Where to place wagers, provided that 1) you are of legal age and 2) such gambling is legal where you are located.
36:30 Don't forget the rest of the day's races, the undercard. Former Derby and Oaks contenders get faster as they mature, peaking at 4 to 5 years of age.
38:45 The Triple Crown is composed of 3 races which begin with the Kentucky Derby, followed by The Preakness, and then The Belmont Stakes. To win any of them signals greatness, but the champion who sweeps all three is a rare and unforgettable champion.
Hope you enjoyed this quick and dirty speedrun through the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown. Please LIKE, COMMENT, and SUBSCRIBE if you did, and Happy Racing, Ya'll! đ Trixie and Weej
00:27 Welcome New Listeners and Subscribers! Use the TIMESTAMPS which are always in the description and pinned FIRST COMMENT to navigate the topics in the episode.
We have some news items plus 6 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks point-earning preps races to cover, so on we go!
1:30 Epicenter looked dominant in his Louisiana Derby win! Probably Kentucky Derby shortlist for Trixie, possibly No. 1 fave for Weej.
2:24 The Japan entry into the Derby will be Crown Pride, a beautyâyes, it matters! This year, we will NOT be betting against Japan and risking shirt-eating or ascot-noshing.
4:40 Trixie is bugged by the Jeff Ruby âSteaks.â Itâs cute, but is a pain in her Felix Unger.
6:00 Florida Derby at Gulfstream. We ADORE Classic Causeway, consider Simplification and White Abarrio, and Weej touts the Pletcher/Saez entrant and recent maiden Charge It. Watch it yourself!
https://youtu.be/M4RYCTHuqj0
10:30 In the Gulfstream Park Oaks, Weej thinks Kathleen O. Will wipe up the other fillies. Trixieâs bother by Goddess of Fireâs inconsistency (and lack of wins) and is interested in recent maiden Catiche as an outside oddball choice.
13:09 Jeff Ruby Steaks G3 at Turfway Park on synthetic. Blackadder has moved from Baffertâs stables to Brisetteâs, which seems wise since heâs already in the Preakness. Tiz the Bomb is the one to beat and the rest of the field is pale by comparison. The Bourbonette Oaks, with no offense intended, is a bit of a succotash of fillies.
18:19 The biggest story is the weekendâs Arkansas Derby, starring Secret Oath, the filly who will run against the boys and test her mettle, and Un Ojo, the one-eyed favorite of fans and bettors alike after winning the Rebel at 75-1!
21:59 The Fantasy Stakes at Oak Lawn will earn Oaks points for the rest of the fillies. Eda, still under Baffertâs nameplate, will be a no-show, probably to run in the Santa Anita Oaksâwhere she canât earn qualification points either! This race, weâre both all in for Bubble Rock, the Chad Brown horse who looked sweet and made us money in the Cincinnati!
26:33 Bob Baffert is losing time in legal wrangling with both the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) who are suspending him for 90 days and with Churchill Downs, who, as property owners, have banned him for 2 years.

1:15 Dubai World Cup Results. Hot Rod Charlie Placesâof course! Country Grammer, a Baffert horse, wins over serious Japanese entrants Life is Good and Chuwa Wizard, but more on his current sitch later in the episode.
3:50 Fair Grounds Meet is ending with the 100-pt Kentucky Derby prep race, Race 12, the Louisiana Derby (G2, $1M purse) and Race 11, the Fair Grounds Oaks for the girls (G2, $400k purse).
4:21 For the Oaks, we both LOVE Echo Zulu, but Trixie likes TurnerLoose to Place and Weej is picking Favor. Someoneâs gotta come in second after all!
6:22 For the Louisiana Derby, we LOVE Epicenter, maybe Call Me Midnight to Zacta-macta, and then Trixie likes Zozos as an added option and Weej is with Rattle N Roll on final probation.
Paco Lopezâs suspension for clipping, creating disaster for Galt and High Oak while he was aboard In Due Time in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. https://paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/careless-riding-jockey-paco-lopez-suspended-14-days-for-fountain-of-youth-ride/
9:15 Going To Vegas, which Weej part owns through My Racehorse, is in a 1/4 mile turf Race 7 today at Santa Anita on the turf. We ADORE her!
10:27 Woodbine Mohawk, currently running harness races, has a late-night MANDATORY PAYOUT for Race 11 SuperHi5 (pick the finishing order for the first 5 horses). The minimum bet is 20 cents, the take-out is a bettor-friendly 15%, and a big carryover means the pool is already over half a million Canadian dollars, so over $400k USD and it will grow! The race goes off at 11:10 pm EDT if you want a cheap chance at a nice pool.
Trixie IS the Lazy Handicapper, always preferring to do one race over multi-race plays.
13:32 Scandal of the WEEK: Trainer Bob Baffertâs potential Derby 3 year-olds are finally moving! Well, 4 of them, including the magnificent Messier. https://paulickreport.com/news/triple-crown/baffert-transfers-four-kentucky-derby-contenders-to-other-trainers/
Nice finally to see actual consequences after the awful tragedy of Medina Spirit. We also muse: Is Corniche injured? Is Newgrange not considered a contender? The required removal of Baffertâs signage at the Santa Anita stables had to hurtâweâre okay with it đ¤Łđ
26:06 Head over to our website to learn more about the NEW FAN ACADEMY, of which we will discuss so much more in the very near future!

2:13 Gulfstreamâs Fountain of Youth G2 (50-20-10-5) 3:13 Davona Dale G2 (50-20-10-5)

5:26 Santa Anitaâs San Felipe G2 6:41 Santa Ysabel G3
7:41 Our Favorite and LEAST FAVE races of our handicapping weekend. (Utter Devastation from Mondayâs Golden Gate mandatory Pick 6 đ)
11:03 Flavian Prat and Umberto Rispoli are both relocating, moving eastward to New York. Pratâs quoted as wanting Eclipse Award attention, but is that the total motivation? Is there a gravitational pull from Cali, where the Baff is supreme? We speculate⌠of course we do!

HAPPY RACING, YAâLL! đ Trixie and Weej
00:38 Last weekendâs Rachel Alexandra (G2) at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Race 12âs odds had us asking: What do people know about Hidden Connection? We liked La Crete and North County, butâŚ
2:35 La Crete was injured and has since had what seems to be successful surgery. Props to jockey Joel Rosario.
4:09 Goddess of Fire surprised usâWhen will we learn?! Trainer Todd Pletcher always has a reason for placing a horse somewhere.
4:43 Trixie did WIN modestly by betting on #7 Turnerloose and #9 Awake at Midnyte to come into the money, mostly because she is coming to adore Nyquistâs kids (Nyquist is out of Uncle Mo, another great sire).
5:39 North Countyâs odds at 8-1 made Weej curious, but the move up in class was rough.
7:12 Race 13 was the Risen Star G2, a star-studded race with champs-in-waiting Pappacap, Smile Happy, Zandon, and Epicenter, among others. We were HIGH on Nyquist kid Slow Down Andy and his nice G2 win against Messier at Los Alamitos, but he stunk here!
8:36 Had to put a buck on Russian Tank, just in case that huge long shot came in. (Spoiler: Nope)
9:09 Trafalgar may be dead to Trixie. Smile Happy didnât walk away with a win, but Placed and is still legit.
11:03 Holy Noodle Casserole! Epicenter killed it! His last humiliation by closer Call Me Midnight seems to have fired him up to dominate. Watching the young horses mature is so satisfying. Post Risen Star, we scan the rearranged Derby leaderboard.
13:55 Covering the Hyacinth Stakes, a Japanese Derby prep, and also the G1 February Stakes in Japan. We got the yearâs first Breeders Cup Classic win-and-youâre-in entrant, 5 year-old colt Cafe Pharaoh, the defending and still-champion of this $2.2M race.
15:44 Moving onto FAT POINTS/FAT PURSES prep races at Oaklawn in Arkansas this weekend, February 26th. We have the Rebel Stakes (G2) at 1 and 1/16 miles on dirt for a purse of $1 million. For the fillies, the Honeybee (G3), a $300K prep for the Kentucky Oaks.
16:49 Weej reviews the Rebel field, including Baffert colt Newgrangeâabout whom we have Derby-related questionsâand Un Ojo, Texas Red Hot, Stellar Tap, Ben Diesel, Chasing Time , Barber Road, Ethereal Road, and Dash Attack.
23:59 Onto reviewing the 6 entrants for the Honeybee, including Optionality, Yuugiri, Secret Oath, Ice Orchid, Free Like a Girl, and Red Queen.
24:53 We love marquis Saturday racing, but⌠itâs never where we earn the mo$t as bettors. Spectacle is fabulous and exciting, but we love a long shot coming in during a weekday claimer!
If you havenât checked it out, we just added a new episodeâright before this oneâto the #historyandscandals playlist (S2 Ep 8). Of course, it includes coverage of the Baffert/Medina Spirit disqualification from the 2021 Kentucky Derby and the consequences.
But in that episode, we also examine the loooong history of doping and the Jockey Clubâs eerily modern concerns about it, as well as cases of a few more dirtbags (in our non legally-binding opinions): a crooked vet, perpetrating pharmacist, and roving doper, um, trainer.
We love making jokes, but love đ´ more. We encourage and support widespread reform with regard to equine medications, standards of care, and treatment during and after thoroughbred racing careers. We desire sparkling ethics, so we can enjoy the sport happily and encourage others to become fans, too!

00:28 Medina Spirit is Disqualified from his 2021 Kentucky Derby win by the state racing commission. 90-day suspension for trainer Bob Baffert. Purse to be redistributed with the title to Mandaloun** (Juddmonte stables, trainer Brad Cox, and jockey Florent Geroux)
**We still LUV Medina Spirit, who gave everything and deserved far better.
https://paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/medina-spirit-disqualified-from-2021-kentucky-derby-win-baffert-given-90-day-suspension/
4:09 Baffertâs horse Blackadder just won the El Camino Real Derby, a Preakness win-and-youâre-in race. Will the Maryland uphold KYâs ruling?
UPDATE: YES! https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horse-racing/bs-sp-preakness-medina-spirit-disqualified-bob-baffert-suspended-20220221-7kblrvwf7bgfhltc6wltz2nt5i-story.html
His 90 days end a week before the Belmont Stakesâwill Baffert still be banned in NY?
7:40 One genuine 3 year-old Derby contender is Newgrange, currently scheduled for the Rebel Stakes G2 at this weekend. And what about Corniche?!
11:23 Besides the Medina Spirit tragedy, Baffert has plenty of questionable history
13:27 The Jockey Club has had its eyes on doping since its FIRST roundtable proceeding in 1953. The Horseracing Safety and Integrity Act (HISA) is the most recent legislative approach** to get at the issue.
**The Jockey Club pulled strings with âpolicingâ too. To learn a LOT more, listen to our podcast The Fishman Affair Parts 1 and 2 (Season 2, Episodes 5 & 6).
16:57 Weej finds eerie similarities in notes from the first roundtable. https://www.jockeyclub.com/Default.asp?section=Resources&area=14
19:37 âHoppingâ was the old doping slang. Gray zone nutritional supplements always blur the lines and penalize the scrupulous.
22:08 After federal indictments of dopers, Mark Casse knew his horses would seem to âget faster.â HA! https://paulickreport.com/news/people/from-the-brink-of-retirement-federal-indictments-have-given-casse-renewed-hope/
23:25 Could HISA really help us get data-driven analysis on issues like Lasix (furosemide)?
25:08 Back to 1953 and unfair competition. Arthur Hancock, JUNIOR is mentioned. A generation later, in 1991, itâs Arthur Hancock III (TREY!) who will still be talking about âdrugs and thugsâ at the racing symposium at the University of AZ.
28:46 Jockey Club rule against abuse and substances. http://www.registry.jockeyclub.com/registry.cfm?Page=tjcRuleBook#nineteen
31:07 Vet Michael Posner rented his prescription pad (cheaply!) to pharmacist-compounder Scott Mangini. https://paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/trial-date-set-for-vet-connected-with-federal-doping-case/
32:24 Trainer Marcus Vitali flitted between state jurisdictions to avoid consequences https://paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/vitali-suspended-one-year-after-meth-positive-in-pennsylvania-appeal-ongoing/
39:35 Bettors should demand better and withhold support from corrupt operations and actors, because horse racing ISNâT DYING!
43:45 Adverse incentives work! People shouldnât have to turn a blind eye to have careers or enjoy the sport.
We love making jokes, but love đ´ more. We encourage and support widespread reform with regard to equine medications, standards of care, and treatment during and after thoroughbred racing careers. We desire sparkling ethics, so we can enjoy the sport happily and encourage others to become fans, too!

1:35 Recapping the Sam F. Lewis (G3) prep race (10-4-2-1) where Classic Causeway dominated and rose to the top of the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard.
4:05 Analyzing the field for the El Camino Real Derby (10-4-2-1) at Golden Gate Fields. Downgraded from stakes status with a synthetic surface, even the Derby website seems to give it shade. https://www.kentuckyderby.com/prep-races/el-camino-real-derby
(Results: Winner Blackadder, a Baffert horse, is banned from earning Derby points, but is now automatically entered to the Preakness held in Maryland, a locale which has not banned Baffert. Place: Mackinnon. Show: Del Mo.)
12:10 Eclipse Award winners for 2021. https://www.drf.com/news/2021-eclipse-awards-winners
Knicks Go wins Horse of the Year! No grumbles from us! Also Older Dirt Male, which is well-deserved!
12:53 Brad Cox (Knicks Goâs) Trainer of the Year: Yes!
13:38 Joel Rosario, Jockey đ Plus Corniche (2yo male đ), Echo Zulu (2yo female đ), and Apprentice Jockey Jessica Pyfer (go, girl!)
15:58 Malathaat wins as 3yo filly. Essential Quality as 3yo male. Yes, butâŚTrixie just wishes his Breeders Cup showing had been more authoritative.
16: 47 Medina Spirit, in second place, got half as many votes as EQ, unusual since thereâs usually a clear winner and scattered extras. Weej and Trixie have so many FEELINGS (like everyone!) about his importance and impact.
18:52 Godolphin is Breeder of the Year.
(By the way, apropos of nothing, have you listened to the Fishman Affair Pts. 1 & 2? Camels in heat are a big medical deal, apparently. Weej has learned they can be pepped-up, like rock stars, with blood transfusions.)
20:47 Jackieâs Warrior is the Male Sprinter winner, but we really liked some of the other nominees like Dr. Schivel and Aloha West. Female Sprinter was CeCe.
21:38 Steeplechase winner is The Mean Queen. Truth in labeling! Weej đ this horse.
22:08 Loves Only You is Turf Female winner (YaY, says Trixie) and the wonderful Yibir wins Turf Male.
24:43 Onto the Risen Star (G2), the first BIG POINTS (50-20-10-5) prep race at Fair Grounds in Louisiana, 1 1/8 mile on the dirt. The horses entered are top-tier and the competition should be magnificent. https://www.kentuckyderby.com/prep-races/risen-star
26:13 Weej likes the chalky Smile Happy, a favorite for a reason.
27:03 Unsure whoâll win, Trixie wants to learn more about Slow Down Andy, who OâNeill has shipped for the contest.
28:13 Trixie and Weej discuss the passel of Lecomte prep underperformers and what we could learn about Epicenter, Pappacap, and Trafalgar without Call Me Midnight harshing their buzzes.
29:27 Chad Brownâs Zandon, winner of the Remsen G2, is not to be dismissed in this âDerby dress rehearsal.â
30:38 Every horse is here for a reason. Figure out why, and you know something about handicapping the race.
31:11 Weâre so proud of the first entry in our History and Scandals playlist. Sometimes, horse racing attracts not only characters, but âcharacters without character,â if you get Weejâs drift.
We love making jokes, but love đ´ more. We encourage and support widespread reform with regard to equine medications, standards of care, and treatment during and after thoroughbred racing careers. HAPPY RACING, YAâLL! đ Trixie and Weej

3:10 Recapping the Pegasus World Cup race of speedballs Life is Good and returning champ Knicks Go. In the end, were they playing Quien Es Mas Macho? NBCâs Replay here: https://youtu.be/KE3v7gRVHZk
6:16 Stiletto Boy is still Trixieâs SHOW BABY! Bragging rights are important in races of such predictability that there were no cash winnings : )
7:59 Some other players were also not-thrilled with the dayâs payouts at Gulfstream. Weej WON the Pick 6 and still lost, because the odds were so short! We discuss how huge takeouts and carryovers drain the joy for winner$ and make bitter bettors.
11:15 Still, we canât ignore the races while a Pick 6 is live! For us, Pegasus Day proved conversational, but not very profitable.
12:25 (Seriously, how lucky a star was Ja Rule born under?!)
13:34 We had more fun with the Houston Racing Festival and Sam Houstonâs friendlier venue and 12% takeout. https://www.shrp.com/events/detail/houston-racing-festival
Q: What is Chalk or a Chalky Horse in racing lingo? A: Chalk refers to a raceâs favorite by odds or a horse with short/low odds, meaning wagers will earn lesser payouts upon winning.
Q: What is the Take-out in horse racing? A: The take-out varies by track and is the percentage of all bets collected off-the-top as a fee to the track for holding and administrating the race.
15:43 We enjoyed the Houston Ladies Classic G3 ($300k) with Paulineâs Pearl and Audreyâs Time, but also the J.B. Connally Turf Cup ($200k), where we got to see our first ever DEAD HEAT between Another Mystery and Fantasioso (who may meet again at the Elkhorn at Keeneland in April)! A VERY exciting and strange development!
Q: What happens when a horse race is ruled a Dead Heat? A: Very rarely, after a âphoto finish,â the race stewards still cannot determine one official winner during their inquiry. Therefore, the contenders are each recorded as official winners, and wagers pay out to multiple winners accordingly.
23:22 We review the Kentucky Derby Prep races for the first weekend in February, including the Withers G3 at Aquaduct, the Holy Bull G3 at Gulfstream, and the Robert B. Lewis G3 at Santa Anita.
23:53 Among the Withersâ 11 horses, we both like Courvoisier and Cooke Creek. Trixie possibly adds Early Voting out of Gun Runner and is curious about Gilded Age.
27:30 Among the Holy Bullâs 9 horses, Weej likes Mo Donegal best, plus Tiz the Bomb, and Giant Game, especially valuing the Breeders Cup history. Trixie likes MoD and TiztB too, but is also monitoring Eloquist out of Nyquist and especially Simplification of out Not This Time, a sire whose progeny are starting to roar.
33:00 Shoould the Robert B. Lewis G3 be renamed the Robert B. Baffert stakes? How many horses will he have in there?! We love Slow Down Andy (of course!) from Nyquist and like Messier of Empire Maker. What is the deal with this race and Santa Anitaâs tiny fields of late?
We have been preparing a ginormous podcast summarizing some of the colorful characters, outrageous defenses, conflicted loyalties, and strange happenings related to the federal trial of disgraced (and just convicted!) veterinarian Dr. Seth Fishman. Thatâs our very next episode, so stay tuned!
OUR CREDO: We love making jokes, but love đ´ more.

00:20 We jump right in with the Lecomte G3 of last weekend and the suprising Win of trainer J. Keith Desormeauxâs Call Me Midnight over Epicenter and Pappacap! Trying to discover what she missed, Trixie finds a potentially interesting jockey question from the Kentucky Jockey Club G2 in November.
4:57 The wild Lecomte killed a live Pick 4 for Weej đ˘
5:44 BONUS: Interlude for Chihuahua Nightmares while Weej was too far away to wake up the peeping little freak.
7:47 Recapping the Silverbulletday Stakes. La Crete was awesome as advertised, but Fannie and Freddie made a better race of it than expected. The final order of finish for Bernabreezy, Sweet as Pie, Miss Chamita, and Candy Raid were also a bit scrambled from predictions.
10:18 Final recap is The Louisiana G3, also from Fair Grounds race track. Mandaloun, the dominant Into Mischief kid, won, but may also just be the SANER choice.
ALERT: Trixie and Weej now spend five minutes bagging on the weirdness of Midnight Bourbon as a racer and potential sire. Weej asserts that thereâs something wackadoo in his attic. Trixie wonders if this âbad ex-boyfriendâ needs a meditation guru. Mentally deficient or in existential crisis?! Weâre not afraid to ask the tough questions! đš
16:49 Back to race analysis with half-baked picks from two more of the Pegasus Day races on January 29th at Gulfstream in Florida, starting with the Turf Invitational G1 at 1 & 1/8 miles for 4 year-olds and up.
17:59 Trixie blames Weej for Space Traveller, which is not only wrong but bad to do.
18:38 Both Weej and Trixie like #6 Colonel Liam, so thereâs that for ya.
20:33 Onto the Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf G3 with more impromptu and lazy analysis! Regal Glory is favored and both Trixie and Weej are too dumb to go for that, so maybe Nicest, Sweet Melania, or Wakanaka?
23:03 Finally, the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) on 1 & 1/8 miles of dirt for $3 million dollars! This epic battle between elite speedballs Knicks Go and Life is Good is SO FREAKING EXCITING! Beyond these two, is Chess Chief too old to party? Trixie and Weejâs favorite underneath scenarios include Stiletto boy, a beloved Show-baby payer, plus Weejâs pick, the very good Sir Winston.
33:11 Weej has also just finished a new 5-minute video on WHY HORSES RUN in our YouTube educational playlist, and Trixie will do some shirt-eating if you donât think itâs cool and learn something unusual about these fabulous equine athletes! https://youtu.be/FWtJEG689J8

As we pre-game the Lecomte (Race 14) and Silverbulletday Stakes (Race 11) coming up on January 22 at Fair Grounds in Louisiana, follow along with Weejâs handy, downloadable summary of the Derby/Oaks prep races and point totals!
https://app.podia.com/community/topics/32387/posts/102423-roadmap-to-the-kentucky-derby-derby-and-oaks-races-and-points
NOTE: âBreaking the maidenâ or becoming a maiden describes the milestone when a horse wins its first race. So-called Maiden races are filled with horses seeking their first wins.
1:10 Introduction to the Lecomte (G3), to be run at 1 & 1/16 miles on the dirt for 3 year-olds with a purse of $200k.The Silverbulletday Stakes is held for 3 y.o. fillies at a distance of 1mile and 70 yards with a $150k purse.
2:42 Recapping Trixieâs love/hate relationship with Midnight Bourbon, a previous winner of this race. (Will Call Me Midnight follow suit?)
4:00 Record and analysis of Post Position 1, Surfer Dude. Color Trixie unconvinced.
4:35 Is PP2, Unified Report, rising enough to compete here?
5:23 PP3, Pappacap is a huge story this season. Under âJersey Joeâ Bravo, is he apt to get stuck on the rail? (Bravo left Monmouth in NJ for Cali last yearâwas it the crop rule issue?)
6:50 Weej explains the 2021 Monmouth crop rule and recaps last summerâs hullabaloo over it.
11:03 HISA (the Horseracing Safety and Integrity Act, being drafted now) will have to deal with complex issues like this uniformly to be useful.
11:42 Pappacapâs been stuck behin Corniche twice.
12:40 In PP4, Trafalgar has Trixieâs and Weejâs interest as a possible up-and-comer.
14:38 In PP5 will be Assmussen-trained Epicenter, a kid of Not This Time, with a recent, exciting win in the Gun Runner Stakes for futurities (2 year-olds who all became 3 on New Yearâs Day).
15:30 Analyzing Cyberknife, a recent maiden trained by Brad Cox, in PP6.
16:43 Blue Kentucky in PP7 could surprise, but is currently a toss for Trixie and Weej.
17:07 Call Me Midnight, in PP8, also raises questions.
18:00 Finally in PP9, Presidential will need to make a big step up to contend with this company.
19:13 Weej loves Epicenter here with interest in a couple more.
20:56 Onto the Silverbulletday Stakes analysis. Only 6 horses!
21:12 In Post Postion 1 is Fannie and Freddie, who just placed in the Untapable stakes for futurities.
22:52 Bernabreezy, who seems very promising, is in PP2.
23:38 PP3 is Miss Chamita, a maiden at Indiana Grand, who Weej finds a curious choice for this race and company.
25:05 Skipping ahead a bit to the very-exciting La Crete (PP5), sibling of Clairiere, who won this race in 2021.
25:40 Back to PP4, Pletcherâs horse, Sweet as Pie, to be ridden by Giroux.
26:16 Returning to the fantastic prospect La Crete.
28:20 Candy Raid is the last filly, in PP6, and a bit of a question mark.
29:18 Weej describes what Claiming Races are and what seeing them in a horseâs record can signify.
31:07 Besides the excellent La Crete, Weej and Trixie give their other faves for this race.
33:46 Young horses mature A LOT on their way to the Derby, and we will be able to SEE it over the next several months in their bodies and demeanors.
OUR CREDO: We love making jokes, but love đ´ more. We encourage and support widespread reform with regard to equine medications, standards of care, and treatment during and after thoroughbred racing careers. 3:55 During our break, there was Santa Anitaâs Opening Day 12/26 (Boxing Day, St. Stephenâs Day) hosted the G1 American Oaks. Yay Fluffy Socks⌠kinda.
4:36 Also the 12/26 San Antonio G2 stakes. Express Train prevails, and Hot Rod Charlie is now Ded to Weej. Eight Rings Shows, but much more on Baffert horses later.
5:15 Malibu G1 at Santa Anita. Flightline smoked the field! (Where was Dr. Schivel? Stiletto Boy is Trixieâs Show-Baby again.) More horses who đ to come in Second?
Itâs a SHAME we wonât see Flightline in the Pegasus G1 on 1/29 against Life is Good and especially Knicks Go. What a matchup it wouldâve been!

8:50 Now that Japanâs horses are breaking through in a BIG way, will NYRA dare offer the $1M Japan bonus for the Belmont Stakes again in 2022, as in 2021?
10:52 For racing, all two year-olds became three year-olds on New Yearâs Day.
11:27 December 26th also saw the new Gun Runner Futurity and Untapable Stakes at Fair Grounds, LA. Winners Epicenter, an Asmussen-trained colt, and North County, a Walsh-trained filly, are both progeny of Not This Time. Hot new sire to watch!

15:42 Nyquistâout of Weejâs beloved succe$$ Uncle Moâsired Slow Down Andy, who won his prep at Los Alamitos.

22:07 Road to the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard based on points-totals and earnings for the colts. (Pull the Oaks fillies from the menu bar as well.)
https://www.kentuckyderby.com/horses/leaderboard
23:08 Some early faves of ours: Jack Christopher, Mo Donegal (of course!), Echo Zulu, Rattle N Roll. Eyes on: Epicenter, Courvosier, Commandperformance, and Wit, among others.
26:17 When will Corniche and other Derby candidates be moved out of Baffertâs stable? Shouldnât it be SOON?! Currently, they canât earn points and BBâs banned from 2022 and 2023.
https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/churchill-downs-announces-ban-on-baffert-entrants/
(As of 1/11/22, heâs fighting back legally, but so far, Churchill is being very firm about No, Nay, Never, Not Happening.)
We think the horses have to start moving by early Feb., because the big points races start by mid-Feb, and thereâs enough talent this year to make them matter. We wouldnât mind seeing new up and coming trainers either.
OUR CREDO: We love making jokes, but love đ´ more. We encourage and support widespread reform with regard to equine medications, standards of care, and treatment during and after thoroughbred racing careers. We desire sparkling ethics, so we can enjoy the sport happily and encourage others to become fans, too!

0:10 RACE 8 was the Qatar Racing Breeders Cup Sprint for $2 million at 6 furlongs on dirt. Weej đ Dr. Schivel, but she and Trixie ignored Andrew Beyerâs prescient warning to pay attention to Aloha West, who simply smoked by at the end for a photo finish to Win. sigh A zombie Pick 3 is like having your pet turn Cujo.
5:45 Weej recalled the amazing October race at Santa Anita when Flavien Prat lost the reins and Dr. Schivel still Won! Hereâs a video of the race and interview with trainer Mark Glatt: https://youtu.be/tyEzDPs_1_Y
6:18 RACE 9 was the FanDuel Breeders Cup Mile (G1) Turf Race for $2M, a âshipperâ special with horses from Ireland, France, Brazil, Great Britain, and Germany. These ARE the world championships of horse racing.
7:55 Weej won on Space Blues!
8:40 Andrew Beyer also noted the exploding numbers of turf races, making Weej feel better.
10:10 Intâl racing data is reported differently by region and can be scanty, making it tougher to know how to compare horses.
11:05 Trixie won with Smooth Like Strait, who loves 2nd! Is that a âhangerâ or a âclingon?â Where was Mo Forza?!
13:37 RACE 10 was the Longines Breeders Cup Distaff (G2) for $2M. Great field with Malathaat, Clairiere, Letruska, and SheDarestheDevil, who Trixie đ However, Marche Lorraine, another Japanese long shot, won!
16:15 Bad Pick 3 start for Weej. Such upsets make the game exciting, butâŚ
18:26 Dunbar Road, who Placed, had been beaten by four of the horses in this race already, multiple times even!
19:24 RACE 11 was the Longines Breeders Cup Turf (G1) at 1 1/2 miles for $4M. Domestic Spendingâs scratch overturned some apple carts. Another enormous field with stars Yibir, Gufo, Bolshoi Ballet, all discussed previously during 33xplâs âsummer tour.â
21:36 Yibir won! Take the Wins, not just the combos. Was Weejâs Superfecta Exotic or stupid?
24:23 RACE 12 was the Longines Breeders Cup Classic (G1) for $6M at 1 1/4 miles on dirt. The superstar match-ups were, for us, Knicks Go, Essential Quality, and Hot Rod Charlie in a three-way battle royale! But Knicks Go ruined that with a Supersonic win.
26:58 Could Life is Good challenge Knicks Go?
30:26 The Fasig-Tipton horse sales were held right after the BC, Japanese buyers were $pending. A mare in foal to In Mischief, the incredible Swiss Skydiver, and SheDarestheDevil, who we ADORE, were all sold for millions. https://fasigtipton.com/2021/The-November-Sale/1109

2:48 For more info about the Juvenile Race hijinks around Modern Games, check Podcast Ep. 35. Friday night, we handicapped for Sat. and live-streamed the outrage until the wee hoursâfun!
4:15 Del Marâs RACE 4 was the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) for a $1 million-dollar purse at 7 furlongs on the dirt. Only 5 horses. Estilo Talentoso was a regrettable scratch. Gamine is a highly-regarded speedball out of Into Mischief and Bella Sofia looked good, too, but Mike McCarthyâs CeCe took the Win!
8:00 Del Marâs RACE 5 was the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint (G1) for $1M. At five furlongs with 18 horses, we expected loads of scratches. 12 horses finally ran. Weej đGolden Pal and Lieutenant Dan. Trixie actually listenedâthis exacta won!
12:08 Golden Pal is another Uncle Mo kid! (Dr. Schivel is another notable one. Heâs in the next podcast with Races 8 through 12.)
13:30 Del Marâs RACE 6 was the Big Ass Fans Breeders Cup Dirt Mile for $1M. Weej and Trixie LOVE the name Snapper Sinclair, which never profits them đ. Life is Good is an Into Mischief kid, a Pletcher speed freak, but Baffertâs Eight Rings was more game than we expected, and Silver State underperformed.
18:11 Trixie is proudly (?) Queen of the Show Bet. Deny not the tiny triumphs!
18:50 Del Marâs RACE 7 was the Makerâs Mark Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) at 1 3/8 miles for $2M. đ because Weejâs partly-owned Going to Vegas lost after a heroic battle. Her temperament explains why stalkers Loves Only You (Japan), My Sister Nat (France), and Warlike Goddess swooped into Win, Place, and Show respectively.
25:15 Going to Vegas has earned another season of racing!
26:16 Loves Only You was prominently featured in media due to a long-brewing de$ire to get Japanese horses competitively integrated into American racing. Will the Belmont Stakesâs $1M Japan bonus get collected in 2022?
28:22 Weej previously bet her âshirt-eatingâ on Japanese horses who werenât ready yet, but now, these horses are fierce!

2:11 On Friday, we were at a table in Millionairesâ Row, which had a cool set-up. The delightful frenzy was like a New Years Eve party or posh bingo hall!

Del Marâs RACE 7 was the Breeders Cup NetJets Juvenile Fillies (G1), covering a length of 1 & 1/16 miles on a dirt track for a total $2 million dollar purse. (If the race doesnât specifically say itâs on turf, the default track surface in the U.S. is dirt.)
These 2 year-old fillies really looked young and adorable! Echo Zulu and Jujuâs Map were speedballs to watch for the future!
11:06 Del Marâs RACE 8 was the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), covering 1 mile for $1M. Longer-shot Pizza Bianca, chef Bobby Flayâs horse, came in and blew up our horizontal wagers (Pick 3, 4, etc.) đ
15:31 Del Marâs RACE 9 was the Breeders Cup Juvenile (G1), covering 1 & 1/16 miles for $2M. (If the race doesnât mention specifically âfillies or mares,â itâs intended for colts and geldings. Exceptional fillies rarely compete in these races.)
Corniche Won, and Pappacap Placed. Trixie and Weej must try to remember to Take the Wins!
18:30 Weej explains the weirdness at the last race of the Grantâs Pass meet in Oregon. The trackâs lights went out and horses finished riderless!! https://youtu.be/_CfSFggqh1A
The result was a No Contest ruling with an ALL PAY for the Pick 6 mandatory payout, which certainly dissatisfied some bettors. Was it small-track shenanigans or just a mistake in automatic lighting settings after the daylight savings time change?
24:31 Now, scale up that outrage 1000x for RACE 10, the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) for $1M.
26:40 Number 2 Albahr was a late scratch, leading Modern Games to be scratched, too. Multi-race bets transferred to the next favored horse, Dakota Gold. Under time pressure, an existing rule allowed Modern games back in to compete for prize money only.
NO ONE COULD BET ON MODERN GAMES, and all the earlier bets were VOIDED and/or SWITCHED. Then⌠Modern Games WON⌠and đ¤Ż
32: 37 Tiz the Bomb actually came in to Place (2nd) behind Modern Gamesâbut since all MG wagers were voided or transferredâwas declared the WINNER. Trixie profited, but what a crazy mess!

Shownotes are brief and link-rich!
0:57 Join our new FREE Community, where to start you off, we have a juicy video on Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, Pick 6 wagers and why YOU want to get in on them during the Breeders Cup, even if youâre only betting the horses at random! Great odds (compared to a lottery pool, for example, Cheap Bets, and Mandatory Payouts. No spam, no fee, just fun! https://33xpl.com/33xpl-community/ Pop On Over to Watch
2:57 Our ORIGINAL, Episode 1 Kentucky Derby video still has a LOT of evergreen racing information, so hereâs that link: https://youtu.be/-iH4M6eszww
6:23 Weej goes over some more of the BASICS of horse race analysis, including track conditions and surfaces.
8:30 Discussing race length and post position draws.
9:49 Weejâs video with FREE online resources for researching horse races. https://youtu.be/elOWTZlBXmc
10:14 Past lengths run (and successes or failures) disclose a lot about a specific horse.
12:52 What company have they been keeping? Have they only raced against horses who stink like the elevator in a sauerkraut factory?
14:45 Watch the post parades and paddock camers and youâll notice horses with the IT factor. Our own hunches from these sights on the day of the race have been important!
18:12 Juveniles are 2 year-olds, like tweens almost, inexperienced, but they will be the Triple Crown 3 year-olds next spring. For race qualifications, all horses change age together with the new year, not on their exact birthdays.
20:30 NBCâs Sports Network will be airing Breeders Cup races on Friday, 11/5, from 5pm to 9pm, eastern time. Also on Saturday 11/6, from 2:30p to 8pm. Theyâre even airing tips on âBetting the Breeders Cupâ on Friday from 3 to 4pm.
24:15 The Filly and Mare Turf race on Friday has Weejâs beloved Going to Vegas in post position #1, and we canât wait to bet on this feel-good champion filly!
25:42 Trixie and Weej do not agree with the Morning Line for several of the entrants. Foreign competition, without the same data available, is an issue in these turf races. And so says the genius of speed data, Andrew Beyer!
34:43 The BIG Race 12 on Saturday, the Longines Breeders Cup Classic, has a $6 million dollar purse. Weej will be bribing winners with carrots and peppermints to get loans. If you watched any of the 2021 Triple Crown races, you will know some of these great horses, like Hot Rod Charlie, Essential Quality, Knicks Go, and Medina Spirit.
40:46 The B.C. ban on race-day medications has been important for international competitors and bettors alike.
And with that, we are off to our undisclosed location to enjoy the race! Join us in our Community at www.33xpl.com and tell us where youâre watching from! We look forward to sharing more over there, but weâre also on many podcasting platforms and YouTube, as ever, and still at Instagram and Pinterest as 33xpl.

Timestamps and especially RICH linkiness follow.
1:08 Last weekâs races ended our 33xpl tour season after 18 weeks of picks and analysis, covering 37 races on 15 tracks across 9 states of the U.S. Weâre proud and relieved to have completed it and hope you enjoyed it, too!
2:35 Weej recaps the Hill Prince (G2), 1 and 1/8 miles on turf for 3 year-olds. (When no sex is given, the raceâs entrants will almost always be mostly colts, and perhaps a smaller number of geldings. Fillies are technically allowed to run these races, which is why it just says 3yo, without any restriction by sex, but itâs quite a rare horse and unusual occurrence when it happens.)
3:35 Weejâs podcast hunches were better than her later bets. Finish order was WIN: Public Sector, PLACE: Never Surprised, SHOW: It Can Be Done, and in 4th: Hilliard. https://youtu.be/UVbNBuzI258
4:55 Trixie found watching the previous (G3) Saranacâlink to video in last podcastâwith the top two finishers was a good prediction of their running styles and their battle to win this race. https://youtu.be/EjLt4Yiu9I4
6:44 It Can Be Done was that long-shot Show bet Trixie enjoys. Where were Soldier Rising and War Bomber?
8:39 Horse 11 of 11, Original, actually beat Public Sector in July, fostering Weejâs hopes for it.
11:13 The Breeders Cup draws are on Monday, so weâll analyze next week when we know the entrants, but we already know there is an exciting, unique Wagering Menu planned for these races on Friday, November 5th, and Saturday, November 6th, at the Del Mar racetrack in San Diego, California and simulcast EVERYWHERE race fans will be. https://www.breederscup.com/article/race-order-and-wagering-menu-announced-2021-breeders-cup-world-championships
11:48 Breeders Cup founded/promoted by John R. Gaines in 1982 as world championships. Since then purses and prestige have exploded.
12:41 The slates of races: 5 on Friday for Future Stars and 9 on Saturday for grown-ups đ
14:47 Nineteen countries, now including Japan and Hong Kong, will be commingling their bets to create gigundou$ wagering pools.
17:18 There will be SuperHigh5s (Pentafectas) on Every Race (!), with no consolations or carryover removed, just 100% rollover until someone wins, and two words horseplayers đ: Mandatory Payout.
18:50 Ultra Pick 6 and other new multi-race wagers, including Special Daily Doubles that will span races over both days.
20:51 Weej and Trixie have a gentlepersonâs bet on the total handle. Weej says $250M (was $166M last year). Trixie takes the over. Both can imagine $300M+.
21:56 Liking the prominent positioning of both the Thoroughbred Safety Coalition https://thoroughbredsafetycoalition.com and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance https://www.thoroughbredaftercare.org across the BC races and materials.
23:10 Some of the great, realistic âretirementâ options for racehorses.
24:16 Lava Man (a $5M winning racehorse) is a great example. In this vid, trainer Doug OâNeill talks about his transition. https://youtu.be/AED5RFY18g8
25:02 Recalling the Preaknessâs outrider who captured the loose racer, Bodeexpress, in 2019. Hereâs cool video of the incident and an interview https://youtu.be/1FBKRo15efM
26:51 Weej vows to be well-informed on the competitors by the next podcast, but thereâs research to do!

1:08 33xplâs self-created âSummer Tourâ of thoroughbred racing is ending after 18 weeks and 37 races at 15 racetracks over 9 statesâWhew!
2:05 Is handicapping like running an athletic marathon? Spoiler: NO, but weâre still exhausted messes.
2:31 Weej recaps last weekendâs Sands Point at Belmont. The delightfully-named Fluffy Socks won for Trixie! Runaway Rumorâs second-place finish plea$ed her and Weej.
4:05 Harajuku disappointed, 7th of 7!
6:18 The Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland, a G1 race for fillies on turf.
7:04 We stupidly avoided favorite Shantisara, a decision which NAGS at Weej, get it?
7:36 Sire Uncle Moâs progeny seem to be killing it recently.
8:16 Trainer Chad Brownâs horses ruled the weekend! Lesson: Do not avoid the Fave or the Flav (ien Prat).
9:33 Flippant, of Tapitâs line, and Empress Josephine both hung in the back of the bus with the bad kids.
11:02 Weej opines that turf races seem to last, like good chewing gum. đ¤
11:51 GLOATING ALERT! In the last week, Weej won two Pick 3s PLUS a Pick 5, clearing over $500, which didnât suck at all!
14:31 A horse betterâs odds improve beyond randomness by making informed selections. **Mentioning economist Richard Thalerâs The Winnerâs Curse: Paradoxes and Anomalies of Economic Life. Weâll cover his essay on parimutuel betting at more length after the Breeders Cup.
15:59 Covering too many possibilities in multi-race bets causes the ticket price to eats the winnings, especially when betting low-odd favorites.
17:44 In multi-race bets, cap each raceâs prospective winners at 2, 3 at most.
18:54 PURE RANDOMNESS already gives horseplayers 100x to 1000x better chances of winning than a typical lottery scratcher.
23:58 Onto October 23rdâs Hill Prince, a G2 at Belmont, at 1 & 1/8 miles on turf for 3 year-olds, which will mean likely all colts and geldings, of whom plenty are entered. Trixie runs down the field.
26:02 Public Sector, a Chad Brown horse again (!), is the fave. Recent wins include G3 Saranac, which Trixie reviewed. She also likes Sifting Sands with Slicked Back as a longer-odd chance (a Brad Cox horse at 10-1 currently) to Show.
28:00 Heâs Pure Gold (20-1) stayed with Public Sector during SaranacâNever Suprised led early and kept it until the very endâso maybe HPGâs odds are longer than the horse deserves for another underneath possibility?
29:37 This length will STRETCH the field, including War Bomber, who Weej likes, though her trifecta would include Public Sector, Sifting Sands, and Soldier Rising (who loves second place).
33:39 Considering the personal agony if Hilliard decides to kick ass, this horse which is a hangnail in Trixieâs mind.
35:12 Planning for next week-BREEDERS CUP PRE-CAP, babies! We canât wait, but until then⌠HAPPY RACING, YAâLL!

00:52 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic recap with Rockemperorâs surprise win. Wherefor art thou, Arklow, or Serve the King?
2:25 Given the results, Trixie wonders if she misread the HRN articleâs theory about Chad Brownâs two-horse strategy.
3:30 Keeping the Clue Phone on Do Not Disturb
4:11 Channel Maker at least looked good five-sixths of the race sad trombone
4:23 Race Analysis and possible picks for Sands Point (G2) for 3 year-old fillies at Belmont on October 16th, worth $200k in purses, at 1 and 1/8 miles on the turf.
6:21 Plum Ali, Harajuku, and Higher Truth as ârepeat offendersâ of our sensibilities. In the first post position, we have 3rd Draft, who came in 9th in the Pebbles?! Srsly?! Jordanâs Leo seems like an okay bet, and maaaaybe, Harajuku, if she gets a better start than in the Jockey Club Oaks.
7:46 Just so you know, our tradmarked (not really) term for exactas is Xzacta-macta-facta-snackta-ganza
8:49 Maybe Trixie likes Fluffy Socks just for the name and the sire, Slumber. ITâS NOT A CRIME, YOU GUYS.
9:32 Weâve added a race to our summer tour, a 10/16 race at Keeneland Racetrack in Lexington, Kentucky, the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup on turf for 3yo fillies at 1 & 1/8 miles. Shantisara, who just beat a bunch of the fillies entered in the Sands Point, is here with the Grade 1 competition and jockey Flavien Prat aboard.
11:43 What takeaway should we draw this time about Chad Brownâs additional entry, Technical Analysis?
12:11 Empress Josephineâs here with 5-time winning jockey Johnny V., but only a week after her last race, where she Showed.
12:59 Is Nicest âdoomedâ as American Pharaohâs kin? Trixieâs scrutinizing.
13:26 Flippant, out of Tapit, is Weejâs favorite and in Trixieâs tops.
14:19 Queen Goddess, out of Empire Maker, may be the outlying interest here as she upgrades to stakes racing with trainer Mike McCarthy and jocky Tyler Gaffalione.
15:43 Burning Ambition shouldnât be ignored either, after coming in first in the Indiana Grand. We run through the rest of the field. Trixie canât decide until the post parade, and Weej thinks any filly here could suprise us.
19:51 The Sands Point race WILL be a laugh, for one reason or another.
20:15 Always check the show notes! (wait, if youâre reading thisâŚnever mind.)
20:49 Our final race of the âtourâ will be the G2 Hill Prince at belmont for 3yo, 1 & 1/8 mile on turf for $400k on October 23rd. Then, onto our Breeders Cup Pre-Capâsquee!
21:58 Horses CAN cross the finish line first if unmanned, but theyâre not supposed to!

Another tin can recordingâtimestamps below!
:32 We jump right into next weekâs Race Picks for the Joe L. Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational, a G1 race of 1 & 1/2 miles for 3 year-olds and up.
1:19 Weej likes Arklow, who won this race in 2019.
1:50 Channel Maker won in 2020 and is Trixieâs sentimental favorite.
2:36 The (Resorts World Casino) Sword Dancer G1 turf race at Saratoga matched up 5 (!) of these horses in late August at the same length, including Rockemperor, and offers good intel for this race. https://youtu.be/0jRwyVD9Flg
3:26 Why doesnât Trixie like Gufo or Japan (SPOILER: After watching the Sword Dancer, she likes them more!)
3:52 Is Serve the King, a 5 year-old, the âslouchiestâ horse in here?
4:58 See Horse Racing Nation for Matt Shifmanâs article and analysis here https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/Joe_Hirsch_Turf_Classic_2021_Odds_and_analysis_123
6:11 Itâs not typical for horses to want to break fast from the pack and prefer to draft in a group instead.
9:22 Pleasure in seeing experienced racehorses.
10:24 How might experience in European turf races affect the contenders here?
11:34 Arklow still looks like a good bet, says Trixie, but only if he starts well, says Weej.
12:16 GLOATING (and race recaps) from Glorious Santa Anita last weekend!
13:14 In the Rodeo Drive Stakes, filly Going to Vegas wins again!! (Weej is a fractional owner via MyRacehorse.com) Both Weej and Trixie bet this girl to Win đ
13:37 Luck, the less-known filly, pays off as well, rewarding Weejâs hunch with an Exacta-Macta-Ganza!
14:08 Trixie also won with Going to Vegas and used her with Luck as part of a winning Trifecta, rounded out by Dogtag! GtV showed real fighting spirit in this race among tough company.
15:06 The Awesome Again Stakes was won commandingly by Medina Spirit, which Weej and Trixie are happy to see.
16:09 Weej wonders if Medina Spirit is a little âfunny looking,â like a rubber suit wrapped over a horse skeleton. đš
17:09 Trixie wouldâve won her Superfecta if Stiletto Boy (coming in to Place) hadnât broken up her preferred order of: Medina Spirit, Express Train, Tripoli, then Tizamagician. Fortunately, sheâd hedged by betting Stiletto Boy as a long-shot to Show, so all was not lost!
18:29 Stiletto Boy is on Weejâs radar now.
19:40 Bob Baffert is keeping a low profile, which seems wise, but Weej thinks sheâs starting to recognize his training style in the horsesâ running.

HAPPY RACING, YAâLL! đ Trixie and Weej
Timestamps below for the quickie Race Picks we recorded from inside our tin cans!
0:47 This Saturday, October 2nd, Santa Anitaâs Race 9 is the Rodeo Drive Stakes on turf for fillies 3 years-old and up, a G1 race worth $300K
1:24 This week, Weej is using some non-free resources, but as a reminder, we have a video tour of online sites for free horse racing research and analysis here https://youtu.be/elOWTZlBXmc or at our website https://www.33xpl.com
1:37 Looks like our top 2 choices are Dogtag, and Going To Vegas, a filly on a winning streak in whom Weej holds fractional shares through MyRacehorse.com
3:04 Not feeling as much love for Neige Blanche and Fast Jet Court. Not seeing RidefortheCause, or Crystalle as particularly good matches to this race. Magic Attitude has decent late speed, Luckâs interesting⌠but whatâs with all the foreign entrants here?
4:32 Red Lark is another, this time from Ireland (probably a toss for Weej), but some of the numbers on the racing form donât make sense to Trixie, such as Luckâs total lifetime winnings in Brazil. Is the scene that different, or are we missing data that makes it even harder to judge these horses?
6:43 Trixie gives her analysis of this field, noting the uneven combination of talent seems as if it might be a kind of overseas opportunism?
8:18 Moving onto Race 10, the Awesome Again, another Breeders Cup In and Youâre In race. Itâs graded G1, and is for 3yo and up, 1 &1/8 mile on the dirt for a purse of $300k. And thereâs more Bob Baffert drama! Because really, when this trainer simply shows up, itâs drama.
9:01 The #5 horse is Medina Spirit, so recently pulled from last weekâs races at Parx in Pennsylvania, along with Baffertâs other horses!
9:40 In this race is another Baffert horse, Azul Coast, who looks like he might not belong in this group, but maybe B.B. is running short on locales to place his entrants?
10:05 To Trixie, both #1 Tizamagician and #2 Midcourt seem outgunned in this race.
10:37 #8 Idolâs interesting, but #7 Tripoliâs the rock star here, solid in every way. How does he look versus Medina Spirit?
11: 41 Stiletto Boy, the previous Iowa Derby winner, currently has odds that make him an attractive addition to a combo platter-type bet.
12:18 Express Train is solid, and has even beaten Tripoli before, so why is Trixie unmoved?
14:01 Tripoli is also Weejâs top pick, perhaps with Medina Spirit showing up somewhere and Stiletto Boy for fun. Medina Spirit really is a great horse, with an unusually dominant attitude that lets him mug you and keep running đ
16:34 Our next races, as we close out the season, are going to be at Belmont. On October 9th is the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic is 1 & 1/2 miles, a G2 worth $500k for 3 year-olds and up. On October 16th is the Sands Point for 3yo fillies, another turf race of 1 & 1/8 miles with a purse of $200k.

We jaunt through Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Oklahoma races this weekâonto California next! Timestamps and links below. 0:30 Recapping away with last weekendâs races at Parx!
2:04 The amazing Clairiere pulled away in the Cotillion Stakes, but while doing so, brought every other horse down a peg to mangle Weejâs trifecta. sad trombone
3:20 Obligatory had as good a shot as any in this fantastic group of fillies, and did come into the money, but Trixie had hoped for more from Always Carina.
4:39 The super-exciting Pennsylvania Derby marked the rematch of speed-freak adversaries Hot Rod Charlie and Midnight Bourbon after all the hassles at the Haskell! *for a video analysis of that controversy with commentary, watch this: https://youtu.be/at3DUTOS26M *
5:52 I Am Redeemed speed figure of 113?
6:39 Hot Rod Charlie Wins to reward Weejâs Scratch-a-zacta with Midnight Bourbon!
7:21 But with these two colts, thereâs Always an Inquiry!
8:06 In the PA Derby, Trixie claimed the trifecta! *It was such a great race to see, check it here if you missed it https://youtu.be/cW4sLMhB1_U *
9:03 Discussing the also-rans Weyburn and Bourbonic
10:42 This raceâs heated pairing drove Trixie back to Midnight Bourbon, the bad boyfriend, but strictly as second-fiddle to HRC.
11:18 The weekendâs flurry of additional bets, including, for posterity, the bittersweet sadness of Arlington Parkâs last races EVER! *More about that here https://youtu.be/wP-U0z9d3xY *
12:39 While we were making a lot of individual bets, we typically embace a #loseslow approach, so we can have fun for hours and hours, breaking even or close to it, saving our longer shots for cheap bets with opportunities for juicy wins.
14:01 Closing the track produces the ultimate âmandatory payout.â
15:56 The Oklahoma Derby at Remington was a fun bonus race, which Weej was inspired to research after the Mystery Handicapperâs picks https://youtu.be/6M8aZhxeo7A
16:56 The original purpose (and payoffs for us!) of the 33xpl.com summer racing tour. We have 2 weeks left if you want to bet-a-long! https://www.33xpl.com/courses/33xpl-s-horse-race-tour-sheet-18-weeks-36-races
18:33 According to Weej, Super Stock may be Super Stinko or Super Suck. (All these horses are rock stars, we know, so we feel free to tease.)
19:06 Trixieâs busted Superfecta. Thank goodness for Flash of Mischief, but WTF, Mr Wireless! Weejâs ruined Exacta-macka-ganza.
20:57 A Ren Faire fiasco didnât make Dial In for Lute a winner, go figure.
22:16 Adding up all the betting , we had great entertainment for cheap, recycling our winnings all weekend.
24:29 Our next set of races to discuss/analyze/blather over are next Saturday, October 2nd, at the beautiful Santa Anita racetrack in Arcadia, California. Itâs opening weekend of the Autumn Meet, running through October 31st, and the dayâs calendar is here https://www.santaanita.com/live-racing/10-2-2021-live-racing/

HAPPY RACING, YAâLL! đ Trixie and Weej
00:45 Reviewing the turf races at Belmont on September 18th. Race 9 was the Jockey Club Oaks which finished W/P/S with Shantisara,Higher Truth, and Harajuku. Where was Creative Flair? If Harajukuâs start had been better, could she even have won?
3:32 Race 10 was the Jockey Club Derby, finishing with Ybir, Soldier Rising (heâs No. 2!), and Slicked Back.
5:28 Tokyo Gold and the acknowleged irresistibility of Tango Tango Tango, who came in dead last đ¤Ł
7:19 The Iroquois, first of the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep races, held at Churchill Downs last Saturday as well. We liked Stellar Tap, Roger McQueen, and Guntown, who all ended behin Major General and Tough to Tame. We sucked it again!
8:40 Trixie won with Red Knobs, you heard it here.
11:22 Our featured races for this week will be Saturday, September 25th, both at Parx Racetrack and Casino (Racino) in Bensalem, Bucks County, northeast of Philadelphia. The Cotillion Stakes is a Grade 1 race for 3 year-old fillies, who will run 1 & 1/16 miles on the dirt, competing for a total purse of $1 million. The Pennsylvania Derby, also a G1 race, will have 3 year-old colts running 1 & 1/8 miles on dirt for a purse of $1M.
12:43 Medina Spirit, the putative winner of the Kentucky Derby, has just been withdrawn from the Penn Derby race, because trainer Bob Baffert âdidnât like the drawâ so didnât want the horse to bother to travel from CA. REALLY?! Horse Racing Nation analyzed the outside draw for Medina Spirit as quite favorable. https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/Pennsylvania_Derby_2021_Odds_and_analysis_123
14:25 Ah, Keepmeinmind, still cashing checks and busting trifects. Never change (never win).
17:38 Reviewing the remaining fieldâvery exciting!âweâre ready for Hot Rod Charlie to win. Midnight Bourbon will both be present, too, for another duel, hopefully, a decisive showdown without ambulances or inquiries necessary. Trixieâs reformed and refuses to bet MB.
19:07 Why isnât Bourbonic better, and what do we know about Weyburnâs inconsistency? (Weâre not really paying attention to Fulsome, Speakerâs Corner, I Am Redeemed, and American Revolution⌠will we regret it?)
20:14 Onto the Cotillion Stakes. Will Private Mission, also a Bob Baffert-trained horse, also be withdrawn from the weekendâs big races in PA? (Spoiler: Yup, sheâs out.)Will any of Baffertâs horses be eligible for the Breederâs Cup?
22:05 Whoâs left? Honestly, so many great fillies that we canât find a clear TOSS among Obligatory, Willâs Secret, Maracuja, Always Carina, Clairiere (currently the favorite), and our choice for funniest name, Leader of the Band.
24:48 Is trainer Steve Assmussen on a legit hot streak with this race and track? Race breakdown at Blood Horse: https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/253434/fillies-look-to-step-it-up-in-cotillion
25:36 The next races on our tour to the Breeders Cup in November are both on October 2nd and will take us to another new locale, Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California for the G1 Awesome Again and the Rodeo Drive Stakes, where Weejâs filly Going to Vegas (through shares in MyRacehorse.com) will be racing for her next win, hopefully.

Weâre discussing the field of horses and our strategies for Belmontâs Jockey Club Derby and Jockey Club Oaks turf races, the final jewels in their Turf Trinity and Turf Tiara, respectively. Weâve got ideas for Xtravagazactas, or Xtravagaxactas, or Extravaganactas⌠something. itâs spelled just like it sounds! Weâre also discussing September 18th Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs, the first juvenile race in the Road to the Kentucky Derby. https://www.kentuckyderby.com/prep-races/iroquois/ . HAPPY RACING, YAâLL! đ Trixie and Weej
WHEW, so much to say! 0:52 Closing out huge meets on each coast and the Jockey Club Gold race was won by Max Player (our sweet Forza Di Oro came through, too).
3:10 Add Happy Saver to the combo platter, and Weej won the trifecta!
4:33 Where do hunches come from and how do you develop them?
5:43 Forwarned was a mismatch for this race, but conversely, this Saratoga meetâs been amazing for trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr., who won a dazzling 5 G1 races, including the Jockey Club Gold aboard Max Player.
7:14 What ARE racing meets? We discuss sessions or seasons of racing and describe how various lengths and opening/closing dates are scheduled so events donât cannibalize attention from each other.
8:30 Weejâs impressions of Del Marâs closing races on TVG. This San Diego track will re-open a new meet for the Breedersâ Cup races, beginning Nov. 5th, 2021.
10:00 Donât bet races when your mojo feels cold, in other words, when you donât care enough to have cultivated a strong opinion.
11:18 This fits in with other tips/lessons from handicapper Mike Curry in an article at Americaâs Best Racing: https://www.americasbestracing.net/gambling/2020-making-smarter-bets-eight-horse-racing-lessons-learned
13:54 Onto NEW TALENT: Weej checked out the amazing 3 year-old Flightlineâbelieve the hype! Hereâs his race, won by over 12 lengths! https://youtu.be/MfxPf94zI-U
16:19 Trixie was impressed by the 2 year-old colt Gunite, who won the 117th running of the Hopeful by almost 6 lengths on Saratogaâs last day! https://youtu.be/sgS-Nvds3Ck It takes such speed to win sprints so decisively.
19:35 As also mentioned in the Curry article above, we discuss the benefits to bettors when the Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, or Pick 6 jackpot has a mandatory payout, as happens at the closing of meets.
19:53 What does âcarryoverâ mean, and why does it exist? What is the trackâs âtakeoutâ? How do these affect the awards to wagerers when there is more than one winner of the pool?
22:43 The Pick 6 pool rose to over a million dollars on the last day at Saratoga!
26:20 Weej is part-owner, through MyRacehorse.com, of filly Going to Vegas, who won the John C. Mabee Stakes on Del Marâs closing day! She discusses the exciting sense of community and ways that fractional owners get to participate.
31:09 An introduction to the unique American racetrack and very-rich meet taking place for about a week at Kentucky Downs. The TwinSpires Edge article by Joe Kristufek is here: https://edge.twinspires.com/racing/kentucky-downs-2021-meet-preview/
33:40 Which trainers are poised to make out well in this unusual setting?
36:00 Kentucky Downs Pick Number Races have a player-friendly takeout of 14-15% and by defintion, wonât be carrying over for long : )
38:34 More of our reminders and opinions as to why horse racing is such an appealing sport to follow, including its built-in rhythms of race day.
41:30 More about Flightlineâs irresistible greatness
42:30 Guniteâs next stop is October 2ndâs Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont, a point-earning, Road to the Kentucky Derby Race for juveniles.
42:50 Going to Vegasâs next stop is the Rodeo Drive Stakes, which weâd already decided to cover! And, the Pennsylvania Derby looks killer! See our whole schedule: https://www.33xpl.com/courses/33xpl-s-horse-race-tour-sheet-18-weeks-36-races

HAPPY RACING, YAâLL! đ Trixie and Weej
Timestamped Topics/Links Below- 00:30 We begin with gloatingâof course we do! We lather the listeners with our bragadoccio. Picking Essential Quality wasnât hard, but our outlying favorite was a near-universal âTossâ among other handicappers. Check the transcript, Judge! : )
1:20 Midnight Bourbon almost spited Trixie (by winning) and earned Weejâs respect for his speed.
2:20 Essential Quality earned that canoeâwill he be the Horse of the Year (again)?
3:33 Keepmeinmind came in 4th, helping his connections due to the fat purse distribution, but not as gainfully for his bettors.
4:00 Dynamic One was also stinky and Masqueparade wasnât remarkable.
4:17 But Miles D! Everyone we heard TOSSED him, but WE LIKED HIM. They can eat our shirts! If you bet him to come into the moneyânot to beat EQ, letâs not be complete nutballsâThen YOU WON, TOO! Yay! Gloat along with us!
6:03 Rat turd of the week was King Fury, he of the cool name and weak follow-through.
(NOTE: We respect and admire the tremendous work it takes to bring these wonderful animals to peak condition for racing, and we know they are rock stars! But when weâre betting money, a little ârat turdâ talk doesnât seem too cruel. King Furyâs still awesome and is undoubtedly above our foolishness.)
7:56 Midnight Bourbon seems to need great competition, but if he gets it, can he ever prevail over it?
8:45 The Jockey Club Gold race is next weekend, September 4th. For the first time, itâs been rescheduled from October at Belmont Park by the New York Racing Association to avoid it being too close and cannibalized by the Breeders Cup races in November.
10:30 A story about the incredible, ineffable Man OâWar in 1920, when he ran the Jockey Clob Gold against only ONE horse who was serving as a trail pony for him. One example of how dominant horses can suppress fields. Hereâs a related article: https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/We_asked_Why_are_the_fields_so_small_at_Saratoga_123
13:30 From the thumbnail, we cover the story of Firenze Fire savaging Yaupon. Thoroughbred horses are hot-blooded individuals and 3 year-olds are Young Horses! Bitey-bitey at top speed! Watch the race here: https://youtu.be/ogW_eXSLyGA
17:07 Will these horses meet again at the Breeders Cup?
18:58 Sad hurricane damage to Fair Grounds race track in New Orleans, the third oldest in the nation. We wish that magical part of the country safety and every good thing as they recover.
20:32 More details of Jockey Club Gold
20:49 There are 6 weeks left in our bet a long tour before the Breeders Cup. Download the whole schedule here: https://www.33xpl.com This is our only podcast this week.
21:44 Itâs not the final field for the Jockey Club Gold, but weâll discuss what we know about the field. This early, scratches are very possible, so weâll see who actually runs.
22:30 Weej and Trixie are both are on record as LIKING Forza Di Oro, and maybe Max Player too.
23:30 What about By My Standards or Forewarned, are Happy Saver or Chess Chief better options.
24:50 Itâs funny how, in horse racing, four years old sounds âoldâ when itâs really prime, just a young adult, and the horses tend to reach their max speed between 4 and 5.
25:50 Night Ops loves second and we love saying HAPPY RACING YAâLL!
Make sure to check out Weejâs new video tour of free online racing research here https://youtu.be/elOWTZlBXmc or at our website https://www.33xpl.com where you can sign up with your email address for more goodies and our very occasional newsletter, but never spam!
Stay Well, Stay Dry, and Stay Chipper! đ Trixie and Weej
1:15 History of the Travers, Americaâs oldest stakes race to be held at Saratoga, Americaâs oldest racetrack, this Saturday. The Riddle family gives Man OâWarâs trophy cup, the original of which was made by Tiffany.
2:33 What the heck is the Travers canoe? Floating in the infield pond of the track since the 1920âs, itâs always painted in the colors of the winning jockeyâs silks from the previous race. This is now a sixty year-old tradition of bragging rights.
4:02 Midnight Bourbon returns after the disastrous Haskell, fortunately healthy for racing! After being burned, Trixie may be through with this âbad boyfriend.â
5:59 Essential Qualityâs enormous and enormously fast behind would look fine in anything, but especially a canoe. Does the latest Jim Dandy give us any doubts?
7:53 Perhaps the second post position is even better than #1.
8:30 Repost of the recent article by HRN on small fields this season: https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/We_asked_Why_are_the_fields_so_small_at_Saratoga_123 Aere dominant horses like EQ âto blame?â
9:20 How much were You paid for falling out of bed this morning? Fat purses and small fields mean cabbage for everyone!
10:24 EQ is the âKwisatz Hadderach,â so perhaps dress your bets around him like an important piece of furniture.
10:45 Keepmeinmind is just happy to be here and racking up the dough underneath without having to bother to win.
13:00 Dynamic One was last seen in the Curlin and feels like fresh flesh in this race.
13:37 We both like Miles D, not just for his awesome namesake, but as a lightly-raced, perhaps longer-shot prospect with a serious jockey aboard.
16:03 Masqueparade is well-matched for this company, a real exacta possibility.
16:46 King Fury had a terrible last âprep raceâ on turf, but this is back to the dirt.
17:51 Apparently, trainers do NOT carry the jockeys on their backs across finish lines. Is it possible for one to have the âinside trackâ on a race from year to year?
19:05 Weej vows a SHIRT WILL BE EATEN (!) if King Fury does better than last or next-to-last.
20:27 Saratogaâs upcoming Jockey Club Gold, 103rd running, for 3 year-olds and up. Perhaps next weekend weâll see more horses who experienced 2020 as a âlost season?â
22:52 How is an assassin supposed to look in the Post Parade?

2:00 Mid-season, some prize purses are getting beefed up to hefty, pre-pandemic amounts! Why are some tracks having trouble and others having record seasons?
4:48 The Alabama Stakes demonstrated why we bow down to supreme filly Malathaat, but just lookee at Clairiere who made a lovely, gritty go of it!
7:15 Weej made out on the Alabama, too! But whatâs an Exacta Key Box anyway, and how does it work?
9:10 We mention the importance of the post parade with the splendor of Army Wife, who coaxed a late bet out of Trixie and salvaged an otherwise sorry slate of bets. (Oh, Crazy Beautiful, what happened?)
10:35 The TVG Pacific Classic offered fascinating twists, because the favorites seemed to go AWOL. So many fast horses taking smoke breaks during this one!
12:00 Tizamagician justified our mysterious and unpopular love (HA!) with a 2nd Place finish. Hunches can compliment data!
14:10 How often do favorites win races by percentage?
15:20 Winner Tripoli made the angels sing to Weej during the post parade. The 1, 2, 3 first horses at the post surprisingly finished in exactly that order, adding Dr. Post as the Show. Last-minute impressions matter.
19:25 Sheriff Brownâs extremely impressive return from way, WAY behind the pack to finish 4th and earn $50k for the effort! Congrats to SB and connections!
21:05 What is the typical purse distribution (by percentage) among the winning horses, trainers, and jockeys?
22:36 Trainer Bob Baffertâs Magic on Tap and the faves Express Train and Royal Ship were not much in evidence by the finish.
25:56 Is this strange racing season driving patrons to big tracks over the smaller ones?
27:36 Weejâs new video is an eight-minute tour of recommended sites with Free Research about specific races and horses. If you want to learn about racing or experiment with handicapping, why spend a lot of money to do it? https://youtu.be/elOWTZlBXmc
30:00 Another informational video by Trixie explains the Thoroughbred Horse Breed and its requirements as well as its global history and physical characteristics in about eighht minutes. https://youtu.be/07ZJ-nwAq50
31:30 How much information do bettors get, and is an overload of data and terminology more than beginners find usable? Thereâs no shortage of places that will sell you picks or datasets or systems, but weâre interested in helping people learn to research and develop their own styles and opinions as bettors, because thatâs a huge part of the fun!

After a crazy, bittersweet day of races at Arlington Park (soon to be RIP), weâre heading into this weekend with a hodge-podge of lord-only-knows in a punchbowl. This strange ârecoveringâ race season is really pretzel-twisting the stakes falling between the biggies for a variety of reasons, and dominant winners scare fields away, too. (Check out this article: https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/We_asked_Why_are_the_fields_so_small_at_Saratoga_123 .) So we find ourselves with more weird fields and more tough decisions we wonât be able to make until race time. However, we will discuss our preliminary analyses and why we obstinately LIKE Tizamagician and donât care what the other kids say! If you have thoughts about this odd season of racing or any horses in particular, share them by all means! At monthâs end, we have the massive Travers âMidsummer Derbyâ looming large, and we have more cool resources almost prepared to help you learn about horse racing and enjoy the funâalso, some tears and bitter whining, but mostly awesome fun! Timestamped topics below.
1:30 Big Dreaming scratches, the luck of the draw.
2:31 Strong Tide, solid horse at first post, why arenât we more in love?
2:56 Glynn County, decent late speed, but also feeling lukewarm?
3:25 Domestic Spending, superhero! At the Manhattan Stakes, showed off from ten lengths out! Flavien Prat keeps the band together for this big 2021 earner, who may be our turf equivalent of Knicks Go or Essential Quality.
6:06 Two Emmys, in a strange twist of nomenclature, apparently loves second place. Underbet?
6:54 Zulu Alpha, 8 year-old gelding to be ridden by Luis Saez, Saratogaâs winningest jockey, has already finished behind three of this raceâs contenders earlier in the year.
8:49 Another Mystery, late speed amid undistinguised company? This may be our unpredictable long shot, as opposed toâŚ
9:54 Space Traveller, British import whoâs been losing in G1s and G2s, but winning in G3s. During this strange return-season of racing, have Del Mar and Saratoga left the rest of the fields too thin?
11:35 Bizzee Channel, spotty, but perhaps a decent undercard pick?
12:43 Armory, strong contender whoâs raced in good company, but our attraction may be too great for the stats to justify. Poor last race in late July (too-recent?) may be worth noting for this kid of Galileo.
15:30 Is Space Traveller really a âlive long shot?â Ummm.
17:00 Our racing tourâs next weekend stops are Del Marâs Pacific Classic and Saratogaâs 141st running of the Alabama. See our whole schedule of races preceding the Breeders Cup at www.33xpl.com and bet-a-long! No Sleep âTil Del Mar!
17:47 The âAll-Drug Olympicsâ for horses, Lasix for everybody?!
18:22 Brief description of Lasix use in horse racing. Another quick summary of the state of its use is here: https://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/horses/horse-racing/2019/04/18/horse-racing-doping-what-lasix-and-how-used/3495967002/
19:05 Space Traveller skips the lotus-eating party. Can he win without the sauce?
JUST FOR THE RECORD: We love making jokes, but love horses more. We encourage and support widespread reform with regard to doping, medical care, and equine treatment. We want sparkling ethics, so we can enjoy the sport happily and encourage others to become fans, too!

0:49 Ten-second insert from last weekâs forgotten Oaks picksâjust the correct bit, of courseâno other analysis which may or may not have been accurate : )
1:10 The Longines Test: Unexpected âtossâ filly Bella Sofia obliterates Trixieâs exacta and commands the field âBrava!
8:01 Saratoga Derby Invitational: Terrific Irish import State of Rest is magnificently keyed-up! Are 2 entrants running here to collect as they âbounce,â being readied for better performances in more prestigious upcoming races?
14:53 The Whitney (Breedersâ Cup Win and Youâre In): The glorious gray Knicks Go dominates while the specatular Swiss Skydiver sunsets.
20:04 Saratoga Oaks Invitational: Concluding the middle jewels of the Turf Triad/ Turf Trinity/ Turf Tiara (whatever, please, name it Whifflepants!), Weej reconnoitered this race and bet it beatifully. Con Lima kills it and Plum Ali is ded to us!
25:26 The Sad, Strange Saga of Arlington Park Racetrack: A beloved venue since 1927, and Weejâs childhood track(!), it was acquired by Richard L. Duchossois in the 1980âs, leading to such highlights as the âMiracle Million,â held right after a devastating fire destroyed the grandstand, and the first-ever Breedersâ Cup held in the midwest in 2002. Is this great park, once the âmost beautifulâ in the country, destined to be bulldozed for condos due after overdosing on that unique recipe of Illinois politics, graft, and corruption?
