Heating and cooling as an industry is one of the main offenders when it comes to emissions and accounts for a large pull on the energy sector as well. So, how do you solve the problem of decreasing energy demand while increasing resiliency and sustainability? Geothermal. The Earth has a stable temperature of around 55-70 degrees F depending on depth everywhere in the world and it can be tapped to be utilized for heating and cooling, both residential and commercial. I sit down with Ammar Alali, the CEO of Strataphy to talk about the huge opportunity that sits in front of the geothermal industry and how he and his team are looking to capitalize.

The Earth's heat produced from radioactive decay in the core has many benefits once recovered and brought to the surface. Most focus is placed on its ability to provide baseload power, which is important, but arguably the most widespread use case being heating and cooling gets overlooked. Geothermal is ubiquitous throughout the planet, however, it does vary by location the feasibility of extracting the resource, but harvesting low temperature resources can be done most anywhere. Once harvested, the use cases are seemingly endless, heat and cool your home, office building, school, grow vegetables, process dairy, aquaculture, and so much more. I had the chance to sit down with Celia Wells who is the Strategic Developments Manager at GeoExchange NZ and talk about their goals, the size of the prize and what challenges lie ahead.

Is Geothermal as exhaustive as the reports say? Can it power the future as a baseload energy source? Does America even produce any? What exactly is it? These are some questions you may be asking yourself when it comes to geothermal, and they are valid since historically geothermal hasn't been very good at engaging stakeholders outside of the industry. Today, we sit down and talk about the Geysers geothermal field, a 725 MWe field that is made up of over 13 power plants and 300 wells, so in short it is incredibly complex and is part of the US's leading 3.6 GW of geothermal production. Sometimes we pay more for things even when there isn't much of a difference in benefit, but when it comes to reliable electricity there is a cost of paying less or having unreliable energy sources providing majority of the electrons. In comes Geothermal, a premium energy source that all stakeholders should be willing to pay a premium for. It gets slighted when compared to wind and solar on an LCOE basis as they are not apples to apples, it has poor messaging and ultimately is the dark horse in this race to net zero. It is clean, reliable, baseload always on, dispatchable and flexible power that can supplement wind and solar, act as a battery, make our grids more resilient and ultimately save all stakeholders from utilities to consumers money and clean up the air as we do it. Resource extraction is one of the most complex ecosystems in the whole world. Even in an area with rich Geothermal potential it is not always a walk in the park to bring it to life and have electrons on the grid. Political, economic, cultural, financial, technical hurdles all can create roadblocks. There are many nuances in any energy system, but it can be done. Insurance is there to take risks that equity or debt can't or won't take. Often an overlooked form of financing, Insurance is somewhat of a backbone in a lot of arenas of life and can play the same role in Geothermal. It helps de-risk Geothermal development drilling, decreases the cost of capital, limits downsides for equity or debt investors and ultimately increases access to more capital. As Julian Richardson with Parhelion Underwriting put it, we are here to take on the low probability/high impact risks so that geothermal development can advance globally.

Subsurface risks are pretty well known in Oil and Gas, even in sub salt regions or other exploration arenas where there are significant unknowns we invest and execute projects. So why is it that in Geothermal we don't apply a similar mindset? Why is Geothermal underfunded? Well, you're in luck then because this week I sit down with John Gilliland, Director of Operations for JRG Energy and dive deep into the operations for geothermal power production. We discuss the similarities between Oil and Gas operations and Geothermal, as well as how they differ and some of the main challenges with extracting/maintaining production. While some of the main applications for Oil and Gas can be used for Geothermal operations, there are limitations along with challenges such as high pressures and temperatures that don't allow for traditional logging, drilling etc. JRG is in the business of bringing oil and gas expertise into geothermal to help sustain geothermal production in cost effective and innovative ways.

Eavor doesn't see their solution to Geothermal as just a well design, but as a product that can be made to order based on the energy demand of their customer. A big reason why Geothermal hasn't grown at the pace that other renewables have is due to a myriad of reasons, but one in particular, Geographical location has hindered the worldwide deployment of Geothermal. Eavor aims to use their Eavor loop technology to help scale Geothermal and reduce costs down to 0.05 cents/kwh to be competitive with other renewable energy sources.

Solving the problem of commercial, residential and industrial heating and cooling emissions globally will undoubtedly be a huge key to our net zero and low carbon future. One of the most efficient options that is a clean energy source is in fact geothermal ground source heat pumps. They simply rely on the ambient temperature of the Earth at shallow depths and a heat exchanger to heat and cool infrastructure from residential homes to large industrial operations. What a fascinating interview this week with Jay Egg of Egg Geo, who solved a simple problem at his home back in the 80's using ground coupled geothermal which led to the founding of what is today a worldwide leader in designing and engineering for geothermal ground source heat pumps.

Waste heat and Geothermal make up an incredible resource that is for the most part underutilized. We must tap this energy source in order to provide flexible, baseload sustainable energy for the future. Climeon has developed a Heat Power system aimed to provide a flexible, modular approach to geothermal development. The unit uses patented technology similar to that of an ORC in order to utilize low temperature waters to generate electricity and can be scaled from 150 kw on up. This could be key in advancing geothermal and implementing pilots quicker. The CPUC recently put out an interim order that by 2026 they want to put an additional 1000 MW of long lead, high capacity factor renewable electricity generation on the grid. On top of that, they also issued their preferred system plan which states that after 2026 they are still looking for an additional GW of generation. A great development for the Geothermal industry, but the question is...can we do it? Bring 1000MW online in 4 years?! The potential is there and the go get it attitude is there industry wide but many hurdles still remain including but not limited to is the permitting process (specifically NEPA) on federal lands. Little g as some would say is the geothermal heating and cooling space or direct use as some would refer to it is a major piece of how Geothermal will scale and go global. Heating and cooling account for up to 40% of GHG emissions globally so providing low carbon heating and cooling residentially and commercially is a huge market ripe for opportunity. Dandelion is taking advantage of this and the large market of the Northeastern US where they use shallow low temperature geothermal to heat and cool residential communities. This model is one that can be replicated anywhere on earth for the most part and can be a big piece of the Geothermal everywhere becoming a reality. Hear more on how Dandelion is decarbonizing the heating and cooling space with geothermal heat pumps. Thank you Michael Sachse.

Things are heating up in Europe currently, whether it be pressures for companies to lower their carbon footprint, gas prices rising to seemingly no end or the pressures to meet the global 1.5 degree C mark by mid century. However, the one HOT topic that deserves to be getting more attention is Geothermal! Well, as of late it is becoming more and more a part of the future equation in Europe. Recently the EU released a Renewable Energy Directive for 2030 and an important piece for the Geothermal industry is the Article 23 which states that all member states have to increase their proportion of renewable heat by 1.3 percentage points each year up to 2030. This is exactly what the team at CausewayGT is focused on, bringing geothermal heat to market by way of direct use. It was great talking with Simon Todd, Managing Director and Chief Technologist of CausewayGT and how they plan to be a major player in the heat market across Europe.

"Innovation in action." That is how Kirsten Marcia, the President and CEO of Deep Earth Energy Production describes what the team at DEEP is doing with their newly commissioned 20-32 MW Geothermal Project in the province of Saskatchewan. Leaning on the decades of Oil and Gas experience that shaped the region, they are deploying horizontal drilling technologies to access medium enthalpy geothermal brines. This project is set to catalyze change in the power, agricultural, food processing and job sectors with flexible, dispatchable power plants. They are even looking at working hand in hand with the nearby Oil and Gas operators to take the excess flare gas and use it to power the pumps at their Geothermal operation to further green up a green energy source. This symbiotic relationship is key to the energy transition/diversification and reaching our net zero goals.

John and I get down to the nitty gritty and go full geologist nerd on this episode, but hopefully it will serve as unique view into the “behind the scenes” of Geothermal systems. Leveraging our understanding of sedimentary basins in which we have been exploring for hydrocarbons for decades will be key in the push to make Geothermal a global baseload energy source. As John and I discuss, there is a wealth of subsurface knowledge in the world and we just need to leverage that to look for heat in this case. There are hurdles that Geothermal faces but starting with direct use is a way that we can start today with decarbonizing the industrial and commercial heating space. One of the things John is most excited about or as he calls it the “Dreamer” idea is to have a thermal battery where we couple solar and geothermal so we can store the excess energy downhole and bring it back up when we actually need. Efficiency of energy production is huge and having a way to predict electricity production is something that will create a more sustainable grid. We couldn’t not talk about the snowpocalypse that hit Texas this past winter and how having a more diverse grid with baseload options apart from natural gas is beneficial moving forward. All in all this was another fascinating conversation where we highlight the challenges and benefits of Geothermal, but not without some puns and cheesy jokes that geologists love!
CeraPhi is one of the companies that is working tirelessly to advance Geothermal as a sustainable energy source for the future and believes that it has the potential to decarbonize not only the electric sector, but the industrial and commercial heating sectors which account for majority of the GHG emissions. They are developing patented approaches to closed loop technologies, which will implement heat exchanger technologies downhole to increase efficiencies and power output. Andy and I discussed the renewed interest in Geothermal and the revived push to make it a global energy source, talked about the landscape as it stands and how to work collaboratively between all of the energy sector to help advance it and discussed CeraPhi's model and how it differs from some of the others out there and their goals for the long term.

How does breakthrough happen? Perserverance and belief are key ingredients. The team at Sage Geosystems in on the forefront of working towards a massive breakthrough in Geothermal energy. With their combined 150+ years of experience in Oil and Gas they bring a problem solving mindset and one that doesn't settle for a no into the Geothermal industry poised to overcome the hurdles it has faced for many years. In order for Geothermal to truly become a TW energy source and be globally available companies like Sage will be key by taking risks and learning on the way to becoming more and more efficient. This is no different than the unconventional business in Oil and Gas in which Cindy is intimately familair with from her time at Shell where nobody would've thought drilling a 3 mile horizontal well in a 20 foot pay interval could be done, but now is commonplace. Cindy and I discuss their recent announcement regarding a feasibility test for providing geothermal power for Ellington Field, their closed loop technology and their work with the Southwest Research Institute on using supercritical CO2 as a working fluid to increase the output efficiency of the turbines.

We continue our journey to bringing awareness to the heat beneath our feet in order to power the future with a very fascinating conversation with Matt Uddenberg, the Vice President of Operations. AltaRock is up to some amazing work and one thing in particular that we touch on in this episode is the ability to access SHR (Super Hot Rock) in order to increase our efficiencies with power generation. Being able to access temperatures in the 4-500 degree Celsius range is key in the advancement of Geothermal as a baseload energy source as it offers up to 5 times as much energy production per well. Increasing energy output thus increasing plant efficiencies is a crucial piece in bringing Geothermal down the cost curve.
