In this episode of the Parent Them Successful Podcast, we uncover what to look for if you believe your child has an undetected hearing defect. In the IEP world, hearing defects, or as IDEA calls it, possible “Hard of Hearing” eligibility, is considered a low-incidence eligibility category. That means that this eligibility category is somewhat rare and special funding is set aside for these students to access equipment and other tools they may need to access the general curriculum. So, if you suspect your child is suffering from a hearing defect, I will share what to look for, misbehaviors that are often misdiagnosed, and treatment options. So, tune in until the end to learn more about what you need to know.

In this episode, I did something a little different. Have you ever looked at your own parenting style and compared it to how you were parented growing up? Maybe you have certain traditions or sayings that your parents used when parenting you or perhaps it’s how you nurture your child’s talents. Sometimes we also may notice some of the things our parents did that we may not want to carry on in our own parenting journey and that’s perfectly fine, too. If you are co-parenting, you must take on a style that joins both of your backgrounds together. If you are single parenting, you may have to make adjustments based on your particular circumstance using whatever support system you have. Well, growing up in a single-parent home allowed me to see many of the sacrifices my mother had to make but the way she parented me also made me the person I am today. So, I interviewed my mother, Linda Sagoe, in this episode to impart her wisdom to all of us.

In this episode, we talk about procrastination. Has your child ever come to you the night before a project is due or an event is scheduled only to tell you that they need supplies before tomorrow? So in your anger and haste, you run to the store to get them everything they need at the last minute. Or maybe your child simply starts getting ready for school or camp 10 minutes before it’s time to leave only to have you running late AGAIN!!! If it’s any consolation, you’re not alone. I’ve experienced this too, and it is so frustrating. That’s why I share practical strategies you can use to help your child overcome procrastination.

In this episode, we discuss intergenerational trauma. This inherited trauma can make deep imprints on your overall well-being. The trauma responses you experience today can sometimes be rooted in past experiences you may not have been present for originally. Maybe you weren’t abused growing up, but your parents or grandparents were. Maybe you didn’t face discrimination or live through a war, but your great-grandparents did. Factors such as these can have negative effects on familial relationships and impact how your children navigate life. Our expert guest educates us about intergenerational trauma while sharing his personal story of trial and triumph within his relationship with his father.

Did you know that about 11.6% of kids had anxiety in 2012, up 20% from 2007? But during the pandemic, those numbers nearly doubled, such that 20.5% of youth worldwide now struggle with anxiety symptoms, as reported by the American Psychological Association. So if your child is in that number, they are not alone. I often get asked what causes my child’s anxiety? It could be a number of factors such as any unexpected change or instability, loss, serious illness, death of a loved one, violence, or abuse. Of course these are just a few situations that can lead some kids to become anxious. Sometimes it could simply be learned behavior. Growing up in a family where others are fearful or anxious also can "teach" a child to be afraid too. But interventions can help them overcome, especially in the form of stories. That’s why , I share my top 12 children’s books that help children manage worry and anxiety. (This is not an exhaustive list but a great resource to get you started.) So, tune in until the end to hear more about what these books have to offer.

In this episode, we talk about the summer slip n slide. No, not the fun swim-like activity that gives you a high water bill, but the one that will have your child forgetting so much of what was learned throughout the year. You may have heard it under other names like learning regression, learning loss, or the summer slide. Basically, it refers to the phenomenon where students, particularly school-aged children, experience a loss of academic skills and knowledge over the summer break when they are not actively engaged in learning. But guess what! You can help your child maintain their skills or better yet, get ahead of their peers. I cover what you can do to mitigate learning loss with fun activities and easy strategies.

In this episode, I share with you some very powerful information about sleep health and your child’s learning, growth, and development. Anyone who knows me knows that I love talking about sleep health. This is often one of the first things I ask students about when I do student interviews. I want to know what time they usually go to bed and wake up. I want to know if they sleep through the night or are they often awakened. This gives me a lot of insight into the problems they are having in school. This is why we take a deep dive in the science of sleep and how it might be the reason behind why your child is struggling, behaviorally or academically. A good night's rest just might just be the answer. Resource: CBS News 60-Minutes “The Science of Sleep”

In this episode, we talk about your struggling reader. Every year, I look at the referrals for special education testing that come across my desk and the #1 reason for referral is for children who are reading well below grade level. The #2 type of referral is for the Autism eligibility. It is quite clear that poor reading skills are a major concern for many - not just the teachers but for parents, too. Think about how you felt when you attended the parent-teacher conference where you were told that your child is “far behind in reading”. Maybe there were discussions about memory issues, not knowing letter sounds, not being able to sound out CVC words, and so on. If this has been your story, I share some very important steps you need to take before you even consider special education test. Why? Because sometimes a reading problem can be corrected with interventions and other times, there truly is a handicapping condition. So be sure to stick around for some important information to consider and also this week’s parenting challenge and your loving reminder. You definitely don’t want to miss it!

This episode’s topic is both important and challenging: Why do some kids struggle with problem behavior? It's a question that many parents, educators, and caregivers grapple with, and understanding the underlying factors can make a significant difference in how we approach and support these children. We start by acknowledging that every child is unique, and there's no universal answer to why some kids exhibit problem behavior. It's a nuanced topic that involves a combination of factors. One significant aspect to consider is that children often communicate through behavior.
In this episode, we explore some of the common contributing factors that contribute to why your child may be experiencing problematic behavior. So listen until the end to find out more about how you can support your child in managing their behavior. Take the ACE's Quiz here**!

Life can be full of surprises - some good and some not so good. But when parents are dealing with something hard, often our kids are, too. And though our kids are usually our number one priority, ironically they often take a backseat when we're trying to survive whatever it is we're trying to survive. Our special guest, Sara Olsher, has a goal and that is to help parents help their kids during the worst thing that's ever happened to them — that could be a divorce or a health crisis.
She leaves us with actionable takeaways that will help, whether you’re in crisis or just surviving life with kids. She shares what works in reducing anxiety and also shares with us why open communication is so essential. Our children need coping skills just like we do, and there are certain types that kids need long-term to be resilient when their lives get tough. So get ready for some real talk today.

WARNING: Controversial Topic
Let me ask you a question. What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “financial literacy”? Is this something that only parents should teach their children or do you think the schools should add this as a part of the education system? I’ve heard many old school parents say that they took a class or two in this area where they learned how to balance a checkbook and learned about basic financial principles that may not have been taught at home. I’ve also seen on rare occasions, classroom teachers who turn their entire class into a token economy where students pay rent for desk and earn class money for doing their work. The token economy may work in an elementary school or middle school setting but what about in a high school setting? Should it be a separate class period dedicated to teaching financial principles? Well, believe it or not, some states are requiring this to be included in the standard curriculum while others are not. But why? To help us take a deeper dive, our special guest is going to shed some light on this situation and give you tools you need to address the issues with your school board.

In this episode, I talk about how to deal with your teenager’s disrespectful attitude. You may have had a conversation with a friend about kids these days and how much they feel entitled. Or you may have had a conversation about how all of a sudden your sweet boy or your sweet girl has become nearly impossible to deal with since entering the pre-teen or teen stage in their lives. Hey, I’ve been there and in some aspects I’m still going through it, so just know that you are not alone and this season in their life is going to require a lot of parental support in order to come out of it successfully. I am going to be sharing 3 ways to deal with your teenager’s disrespectful behavior in order to help you get things back on track.

In this episode, we talk about a truly pervasive issue in the parenting world. Is it me or does it seem like kids just don’t do well taking direction these days. You give a directive and they say “no, I don’t want to” or maybe they just outright ignore you as if they didn’t hear a thing. As a parent, what do you do? Maybe you yell. Maybe you offer a sweet deal or bribe. Maybe you give them an ultimatum which kicks their defiant behaviors into high gear. Of course, the cycle continues. Well, there has to be a better way to handle these difficult situations at every age and stage of childhood development. That’s why we have a very special guest today to help us with this very issue. She has helped over 10,000 parents, so you’re not alone.

In this episode, we answer the question: Why are we seeing more children struggling with emotional regulation?
We have conditions like Oppositional Defiant Disorder being diagnosed younger and younger. Anxiety Disorder diagnoses are also on the rise. Why are we seeing this trend? Has societal change with the introduction of so many handheld devices become a contributing factor? Have our children gotten away from the social nuances that accompany good old fashion “play”? Can we give our children better stability in emotional wellness if we do something different and more intentional, which frankly, may be considered, nowadays, out of the norm? Today, our special guest is going to shed light on ways we can get back to supporting “play” and how it is connected to children’s overall well-being.

I cannot have this conversation on my own, so that’s why our guest expert, Damon Eddy, helps bring clarity to ways we, as parents, can ensure that our children are being raised to become loving and impactful adults in this new and ever-changing world. Our world needs more people who hold those types of character traits, wouldn’t you agree? So tune in for some insights that will have you reflecting on your own parenting style.

In this episode, I want to pass along a message to parents who have children in special education or who you suspect needs additional support. I talked with many of my colleagues in the field from across the nation about what they want parents to know, specifically what they want you to know that they can’t say at an IEP meeting or as school personnel because of the repercussions they may face from their superiors. Sometimes we, as school psychologists, find ourselves in this kind of weird space intertwined between school politics and advocating for children and families in a way that may go against the grain. So, this episode is dedicated to all the parents who want to be empowered to ensure that your child is getting the best education possible and without the games. So tune in and take notes.

Paying for college has been a significant challenge for students and their families worldwide. This escalation in college expenses has led to a widespread issue of student debt, affecting millions of graduates and their financial futures.
So that's why I bring back a special guest from a previous episode, Dr. Suni Beasley, to give us insights into how you can fund your child’s college without going into a bunch of debt! And he is a living testament that it can be done.

In this episode, we talk about something very important - bullying. Yes, it is a very popular topic, but it can be a scary thing to talk about as your child gets older and especially if he or she has special needs. It is a parents worst nightmare to find out that your child has been a victim of bullying, especially if it cost them their life. I was reading the news the other day and saw that one family in my local area had received a $27 million settlement in a lawsuit over bullying death of a 13-year-old Moreno Valley, Ca student. This case has made national headlines because the child was not protected by the school district. Although this family was able to get financial restitution for what happened, no one can ever put a dollar amount on your child’s life. As parents, we need to be equipped with knowledge that will ensure our children are not victims of bullying and that we know what steps to take if bullying is suspected.

In this episode, we discuss a very important topic with you regarding the mental health state of our children due to academic stressors and pressures that are having difficulty managing. There are so many warning signs that you need to be aware of so that you can intervene early and help your child cope or even re-calibrate so that they are in a healthier mind space.
I bring back a special guest from Episode 73, Sheila Akbar, to really help us understand what our children may be feeling and experiencing as these pressures rise up. She knows the importance of balance and also when it may be time for a child to make a shift their academic journey and pursuits. Make sure you stick around until the end because there are some things that you may need to consider if you are noticing that your child is feeling extremely overwhelmed, especially if their health is taking a dive because of it.

In this episode, we talk about parent advocacy. Those of you who have children with special needs know the importance of advocating for your child to get a quality education. Whether your child has ADHD, Autism, a Learning Disability, or Medical Needs…whatever the case may be, it’s important to know if and when you need an advocate to assist you in ensuring that your child has a proper free and appropriate public education (FAPE). It’s definitely hard to advocate alone, and sometimes it’s just simply necessary to hire help. So stick around as we explore the benefits and process of obtaining an advocate.

Have you noticed how much our youth are using social media these days? YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat - it seems like they can spend countless hours on these platforms. Or maybe you’re that parent who is either restricting your tween or teens’ use altogether. Well, we all know that eventually, it will be a part of their normal social activity. This can be scary to think about with what we know about cyberbullying and online friendships or even dating relationships for that matter. But what if there was a way to prepare our children for these online interactions so that they are resilient against the odds? In this episode, we continue our conversation about the college application process. Maybe your child has a few dream schools in mind and they want to give the application their best shot. Although there is never any guaranteed formula to get into a “dream school”, our special guest is going to at least help us better understand what standing out in the application process looks like. We may have our own ideas about this, but being able to get information and advice from an expert in the field is highly recommended. So listen intently as we learn together.

In this episode, we talk about storytelling. Not necessarily in an academic sense but in a life-sense. If you have a child who plans to attend college, this discussion is very important and informative. From a college’s perspective, admissions staff are especially interested in seeing a student’s potential to succeed in post-secondary school as well as their future career. They also want to ensure that your child is a person who will contribute to the education and careers of their classmates, so your child’s lived experience will be critical in how they tell their story. So what exactly will your child need to know before writing that first essay? Learn more as I interview college admissions expert, Kate Stone, as she walk us through the process. In this episode, I interviewed the Founder and Director of the Emotional Health Institute (EHI), Cedric Bertelli, about emotional healing in children, especially if they have experienced trauma. As adults, if there are unresolved issues in our lives, it can hinder everyday relationships. And oftentimes adults seek out therapy because maybe they recognize relationship patterns that they are tired of repeating. But why wait until adulthood to address adverse childhood experiences? The emotional healing process can begin much much sooner. That's why Cedric unlocks so many insights for us as we parent successful children. About This Episode's Special Guest:

In this episode, we talk about special education timelines. It’s easy to get taken advantage of when you lack knowledge and I never want that to happen to you. I want you to be equipped with knowledge so that you can exercise your rights and ensure that your child gets access to supports they may be eligible for. So, I breakdown the major timelines for you in this show. This is going to benefit the parent who is thinking about asking for an Initial special education assessment, asking for additional assessments, or generally what to expect for meeting deadlines.

In this episode, I interview speech and language pathologist, Lenora Edwards, M.S.CCC-SLP, to address the concerns that many of you have regarding your child’s delayed speech and communication skills. Here are some interesting facts about speech delays in children. In an analysis of nearly 2.5 million children younger than 5 years old, researchers at health-analytics company, Truveta, found that for each year of age, first-time speech delay diagnosis increased by an average of 1.6 times between 2018-19 and 2021-22. The highest increase was among 1-year-olds, the researchers said. But why are we seeing this trend? Is it due to the pandemic? Is it due to the increase of screen time as a society? Our special guest helps us have this important conversation as well as provide insights if you suspect your child needs help. About This Episode's Special Guest:

In this episode, I talk with you about a very frustrating topic. Do you have a child who you know is very intelligent and has a lot of great skills and qualities, but they just keep bringing home D’s and F’s? I understand how frustrating that is. You as a parent know that they are capable of much much more, but yet, year after year and maybe even summer school after summer school, your child constantly struggles to perform well in school. I share some of the reasons behind why your child is low performing and what you can do to support. Keep in mind that you will need a strong team to help your child turn this around, so be thinking about who your main educational supporters are because you will need to count on them, as well.

If you have a child on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) then you know how important it is for the right accommodations and modifications to be in place. Even if your child is in an intervention program or on a 504 Plan (which I discussed in a previous episode), accommodations can still be made to support their learning success.
In this episode, I tell you the difference between modifications and accommodations and then I share with you some very practical accommodations that you should ask for at your child’s next IEP meeting. Whether it is an Initial meeting or an Annual meeting, based on how your child best learns and where their struggle areas are, these accommodations are a great resource. Link to resources below.

Whether it’s a long Winter Break, Spring Break or Summer Break, it’s important to understand that your child could lose academic skills simply because their brain is not being exercised and stretched enough to keep the momentum of what was learned during the time leading up to the break. That’s why after every long break, teachers spend days sometimes weeks re-teaching children how to behave in school, classroom expectations, and other routines that they may have forgotten. Much of this time is also spent reviewing the previous year’s content in order to rejog their memories so that they can begin building upon skills once learned. To minimize academic regression for your child, I talk about some things you can do to prevent what educators call the “Summer Slide”.

Many parents have been asking me to address the issue of shyness in children so today’s episode is dedicated to just that. It’s important to know the difference between shyness and social anxiety so that you as a parent can take the right steps towards getting your child the type of support they need. I have worked with children who have social anxiety and it is clear that they have some deeper fears about what they feel might happen in the future. When I work with shy children, they are often battling a self-confidence issue that can easily be worked on.
So let’s take a deep dive into these two common childhood issues to help you determine next steps in supporting your child. So hang around for that, and also for your loving reminder and a challenge because it will surely bless you.

We don’t talk enough about childhood mental illnesses, and so that’s why this episode is dedicated to just that. There was a study published in the January 2022 issue of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America, and the study found that, overall, 21.8 percent of U.S. children ages 3 to 17 have one or more of the common mental, emotional, and behavioral health conditions assessed. The prevalence of mental health problems across U.S. children ranged from about 15 to 60 percent, increasing with the type (social, relational, or both) and number of these risks that children had been exposed to. And of course, schools are NOT always fully equipped to deal with them.
This is why it’s so important for parents and caregivers to take charge of their child’s care and know how to best support them in the process. You are your child’s best advocate. Our special guest, School Psychologist Martin Barriga, shares more about the top 5 common childhood mental illnesses and how parents and caregivers can help children manage their symptoms.

In this episode, I teach you how to hack your child’s mindset and guess what. You will have to hack yours too! Sometimes we may think that we are encouraging our child when we say “good job” and “you’re so smart”, but the pressure that these statements place on our kids often backfire and cause them to not want to try new challenges due to the fear of failure. A child with a growth mindset will look for challenges instead of shying away from them. They often live purposeful and fulfilled lives. Discover 10 growth mindset hacks that will improve your child's quality of life.

In this episode, I talk about what you can do to support your child when a crisis hits. When you think of crisis as it relates to schools, you may think about a school shooting or tragedy that happens during the school day. But a crisis can also be the death of a classmate, teacher, or favorite administrator. Sometimes these events are predictable as in the case with a person battling cancer, but others can be unforeseen such as in the case of a car accident that happens over the weekend.
Nevertheless, parents, you are often in a position to provide a large amount of support to your child when such incidents happen, and to help you be more prepared, I share 3 things you MUST know to support your child when crisis hits. I discuss possible reactions, possible supports, and possible coping strategies, that are all evidence-based. You never know when you will need to use this skill.

In this episode, we talk about how to teach your child the creative process. Why is this important? Well, it develops critical thinking skills and helps them become better problem solvers. Problems can be social in nature, academic, relational, but the key is that you want them to be able to be flexible in their thinking so that they can formulate their own ideas and be leaders, rather than always following the crowd. There are just so many benefits to teaching your child the creative process and our special guest, Drew Vernon, child development advocate from Tonies®, is going to help you understand your role as a parent.

Today, I bring back an awesome previous guest to help me have a conversation about why kids are so stressed these days! Has your child been extra on edge, yelling or screaming at you or maybe withdrawing more than usual? Do you have a child who is self-harming or even no longer interested in going to school? If you can relate to any of these situations, stick around to hear what the problem is and what you can do about it.
I interview Dr. Kelly, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, about this very topic, and she will be sharing her expertise with us to help us better approach these difficult situations.

In this episode, I share 10 important accommodations that will support your child’s learning if they struggle with ADHD. According to the CDC, more than 6 million children in the United States have the disorder. About a third of those were diagnosed when quite young - between the ages of 2 and 5. The CDC also estimates that almost 1 in 10 children have the disorder today. That’s a much higher number than 20 years ago, when ADHD was diagnosed in just over 1 in 20 children. So, that’s why it’s so important for you to know what strategies work and what types of accommodations you can ask for that will better support your child’s learning. Keep in mind that this can be applied to both school and home environments. ADHD should not hinder your child from being successful.

In this episode, I want to help you motivate your teen to read and better yet, become a better reader if reading is a struggle. Even if reading is not a struggle, sometimes getting them to read in general can be a challenge. You may not know this about me, but I used to be an English teacher. I taught 8th graders at the middle school level before moving on to teach 9th graders at the high school level. While teaching high school, I had the opportunity to also teach a few periods of Language Arts Support for struggling readers. Nevertheless, the goal was always to improve critical thinking and reading comprehension skills while keeping it engaging.
So that’s why I will be sharing with you 3 things you can do to ignite your teen’s passion for reading.

In this episode, we take a deep dive into the long term benefits of tapping into your child’s true passion. Research has shown that it helps to improve your child's confidence and by focusing on a child’s deep rooted interests and abilities, it leads to an overall more fulfilled and happier life. If your child seems to get frustrated with school or if they resist doing certain extra-curricular activities, it may simply be that what they are doing is misaligned with their true passion. And that’s why it’s so important not to underestimate the power of tapping into what they already love to do as a way to empower them to live out their full potential. In this episode, we discuss one of my favorite topics…college preparation and admissions. Yes! The reason this is so exciting for me to discuss is because I enjoy seeing our youth really step into the plan for how they envision their future lives. For some children, they are the first in their families to go to college. For others, they may be following a family tradition of some sort, but nevertheless, it is an exciting and yet emotional time for parents and children alike.
So today, you are in for a treat! I am interviewing an expert in this area of what it takes to really prepare for these moments and how to use the SAT and ACT as leverage in a time when these tests are no longer requirements for admissions. We are going to get clarity on exactly what we need to know, and parents, I’m excited to be a part of your journey.

How many times have you or your child been stressed out over grades? Maybe you have a child who is a perfectionist and they just break down if they get a B. Or maybe your child has a history of struggling in school. Maybe they just give up trying after they see that first D or F. It could be that your child is somewhere in the middle, floating along that C range where the both of you know that they can do better. Now, if you’re the fortunate parent who doesn’t stress over grades and whose child doesn’t stress either, well just count yourselves fortunate enough to be anomalies. For most of us, there is some stress centered around the outcome of grades.
In this episode, I share 10 things to be cautious of when too much emphasis is placed on grades because it can be very detrimental to your child’s mental health.

In this episode, I interview a technology company recruiter and talent acquisition partner in order to have a real conversation about the future of STEM for girls and children of color. If you haven’t heard about STEM, it basically is any field that has a strong foundation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Math.
You may be wondering…why just focusing on girls and children of color. Well, jobs within the STEM field are some of the highest paying jobs with the least amount of individuals in the talent pool here in the U.S. We often have to recruit from overseas to fulfill positions. Not only that, the STEM field is White male dominated, and of minority populations, STEM fields consists of a large Asian representation. So it is important to understand that women and minority groups such as African Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans are largely underrepresented, and you know who can change that narrative? YOU! You as a parent can position your children to consider a career in STEM - especially if they are in these underrepresented groups. After all, it is the wave of the future.

Self-Esteem vs. Self-ConfidenceIn this episode, I share 3 key findings explaining why focusing on confidence is critical in preparing your child for a positive school experience.
First, understand that self-esteem is literally how favorably a person regards him or herself. High self-esteem can mean confident and secure–but it can also mean conceited, arrogant, narcissistic, and egotistical. Believing in yourself is the premise to understanding self-esteem.
Self-confidence is believing in your ability. This approach takes on more of a growth mindset, a term coined by researcher Carol Dweck, which means that we value what we’re doing regardless of the outcome. We learn to thrive on challenge, and don't see failure as a way to describe ourselves but as a springboard for growth and developing our abilities. A growth mindset is an approach to life in which an individual believes that their talents, intelligence, and abilities can be motivating.
Find out what the correlation is between self-esteem and academic performance and why it may be more important to improve a child’s self-confidence if we want to see improvements in achievement.

Being a good self-advocate has big benefits for children and adults, especially for those who think and learn differently. Individuals who know how to self-advocate are more likely to do well in school, work, and life. They often feel confident in what they're learning and doing, and feel a sense of empowerment to better decisions about life, which creates independence. The skill of self-advocacy is also very important to consider when preparing for your child's transition from high school to the post-secondary world. If your child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), transition plans are very critical in bridging the gap. Know what you need to do to prepare and what agencies can assist in this transition. Don't be in the dark. Listen now to Part 2 of this two-part series to find out what you need to know and consider in the process!

In this episode, Jessika interviews Dr. LaTanya Bowman, a chiropractic physician in order to take a deeper dive into understanding the important role that chiropractic medicine can play in the physical care and injury prevention for your student athlete! Did you know that young people are more prone to be injured because they’re still growing, are less coordinated, and are more likely to overestimate their abilities.
No matter the age, many injuries happen due to preventable factors, such as overuse/repetitive strain, starting a new sport after being inactive, not warming up, poor technique, or even wearing the wrong shoes.
And this is why it is so important for athletes to be seen regularly by a chiropractor. Not only does it have lifetime benefits, but it also assists them with performing at their best to give them better opportunities to thrive at the next level of their sports careers!
