Scott Chrostek is the Executive Pastor of Ministries and Programs at Resurrection, a United Methodist Church with six locations in the Kansas City area. We discuss the difference between faith and religion, statistical trends of organized religion and why people have left over the past decade, and what needs to change for these groups to continue to exist. Meet Scott ChrostekRev. Resurrection Downtown began as a mobile start-up, and grew to include two sites: one a former bar and concert venue located between a tattoo parlor and strip club and two a city block that gave rise to the first new church building in downtown KC in over 80 years. It continues to grow today as one of the few downtown United Methodist churches growing in an urban area across the country.  Scott is married to Rev. On June 2, 2007, Kelsey was abducted in broad daylight from Target in Overland Park. The effort to find Kelsey grew so large the volunteers became known as "Kelsey's Army." On June 6, 2007, Kelsey's body was found. She had graduated from high school just 9 days before being murdered. The person accused was arrested the same day. On July 23, 2008, Kelsey's killer pled guilty to all four charges and on September 16, 2008, he was sentenced to life in prison without any chance of parole.Today we have the honor of visiting with Kelsey's parents, Missey and Greg Smith. They share their daughter's story, the Kelsey Smith Act, and the resources their foundation offers. We ask how parents can balance being aware and safe with being scared and living in fear. Missey and Greg were an inspiration to us and know they will be to you, as well.Meet Missey and Greg SmithBeyond local Kansas City news coverage, Kelsey's disappearance and murder received prominent national media attention, due in large part to her parents, Greg and Missey Smith. Greg has 17 years of law enforcement experience and was a police officer at the time of her abduction. On July 7, 2007, they established the Kelsey Smith Foundation to honor their daughter by empowering families, friends, and communities to proactively protect one of its most precious resources, namely its youth and young adults. We are so appreciative of them sharing Kelsey's story with us today and all they do to keep other family's kids safe.Connect with Megan and SarahWe would love to hear from you! Today we are talking about the modern family — specifically, families that are created with the help of sperm donors. The children of the sperm donors but conceived into different families are referred to as diblings, which we hear about those relationships from our guest. An estimated 30,000 to 60,000 children conceived with donor sperm are born in the U.S. every year, though that statistic may well be an underestimate. The fertility industry doesn’t have to keep records, so the true number is unknown.

Ali Liggett, Leawood mom and one of our own KCMC contributors, is here to share her story and experience of conceiving her and her wife’s darling little girl, Amelia. We are so appreciative of her sharing her journey with us and hope you enjoy learning as much as we did.

Ali was born and raised in Lee’s Summit, MO and graduated from the University of Central Missouri with a degree in Political Science. She met her wife, Abby, in 2015 and the two now live in Leawood, KS currently with their amazing daughter, Amelia. In addition to wrangling her daughter, Ali loves working out, road trips, Diet Dr. Pepper and advocating for causes she cares about. She’s never met a stranger and loves connecting with new friends.

Charlie's House is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness and educating parents and caregivers, healthcare professionals and community organizations about common dangers that cause injuries and accidents to children in and around the home. Their mission is fulfilled through increased awareness, public education, and distribution of safety devices at no cost.

They provide safety education on five main topics: home, water, fire, seasonal and vehicle safety.

The Charlie's House Resource Center is available to the public, and anyone is encouraged to pick up safety devices, safety educational materials and more - all at no cost. Charlie' House encourages you to schedule a tour at www.charlieshouse.org and find a date/time that works best for you. Don't see a date/time that fits your needs? The recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas has evoked many emotions — sadness, grief, helplessness, anxiety, and anger. Children who are struggling with their thoughts and feelings about the stories and images of the shooting may turn to trusted adults for help and guidance.

Today we talk with Kim Ludwig, LCSW, LSCSW, about how to talk to your kids and teens about this tragic event. Kim is the Director of Clinical Operations and a licensed clinical social worker at Research Psychiatric Center. Research Psychiatric Center treats adolescents and adults and offers behavioral health assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can reach a mental health professional at (844) 207-4511.

9 Tips On Talking With Your Kids

Start the conversation.  Find out what your child already knows.  Correct inaccurate information Encourage your child to ask questions, and answer those questions directly. Limit media exposure. Common reaction may include trouble concentrating or paying attention. Younger kids may want to be closer to you and may have trouble separating. Consider sharing your feelings about the events with your child/teen, but at a level they can understand. You may express sadness and empathy for the victims and their families. You may share some worry, but it is important to also share ideas for coping with difficult situations like this tragedy. Be patient. In times of stress, children/teens may have trouble with their behavior, concentration, and attention. While they may not openly ask for your guidance or support, they will want it. Adolescents who are seeking increased independence may have difficulty expressing their needs. Both children and teens will need a little extra patience, care, and love. (Be patient with yourself, too!). Extra help. Should reactions continue or at any point interfere with your children’s/teens’ abilities to function or if you are worried, contact your family physician, pediatrician, or our experts at Research Psychiatric Center.

In celebration of Earth Day, we are visiting with Susan Alig and Robin Ganahl of Mothers Out Front, an organization that brings moms together to work toward climate change both nationally and locally.

Their work is centered on bringing mothers, grandmothers, aunts and other allies to be a collective voice for action at local and state levels, focused on phasing out fossil fuels. Mothers Out Front grows their network by hosting house parties where community members can gather to learn how to make a change in their communities.

We’re excited for you to hear about their work and ways for you to be involved.

Connect with Robin and Susan Robin is a KC native who spent time on both coasts before settling back in KC in 2019 with her husband and two kids. In 2015, she was a stay at home mom with a 4 and 6 year old when she decided she wanted to do more to protect their future. This led her to start advocating for local action on climate with Mothers Out Front and eventually working as a clean energy organizer for a San Diego nonprofit called Climate Action Campaign. Now Robin leads the Kansas City chapter of Mothers Out Front and serves as Chair of Kansas City, Missouri's Climate Protection Steering Committee. Follow her on Instagram.

As a lifelong Kansas City resident, Susan found her love of nature before she became an activist. She used nature as a respite from her busy career. When she became a mom, she saw that climate change will profoundly affect her children's futures and decided to do her part to make it better.  Susan is most passionate first about being a mom, and second about finding ways to help humans live in harmony with nature. Follow her on Twitter.

In today's episode, we are talking about alcohol and motherhood, an issue that has been normalized culturally as moms but can easily turn into something more serious.

Moms with young kids increased their alcohol consumption by nearly 325 percent between the start of the COVID-19  pandemic and end of the year 2020 according to a study conducted for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. A study published in JAMA found that during 2020 there was a 41 percent increase in the number of days on which women drank heavily, defined as having four or more drinks in a couple of hours.

We are so grateful to have Megan Peters, local Kansas City mom, on the show today to help us tackle this issue and share her story. Megan describes herself as "an imperfect human just doing her best." She lives in Kansas City with her two kids, partner, two dogs and two cats. She is a writer and photographer, and former "mom blogger," who left the weird world of social media influencing to work in digital marketing for a major healthcare organization. She is an advocate in her community, leading local movements for public education, refugee resettlement, global health initiatives and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). She loves true crime, sci-fi, reading, running and ice cream. Resources AA/Al Anon

Happy holiday season from Kansas City MomCast! In our latest episode, we discuss two fun and relevant topics that will hopefully make your life a little easier — holidays hacks and local Kansas City shopping. We hope you learn something new, and find a new Kansas City shop to to visit to help finish the rest of your list!

Bonus Content: KCMC Contributor Team Holiday Hacks  Buy the 4-pack of gift cards that places sell to have on hand for last minute gifts. I also take all the bonus gift stuff that I get from regular buying and add them to other gifts to make them look more substantial. Like, "hey, free random coffee mug from Beauty Brands for buying shampoo. Bag of good coffee, and poof you have a gift!"

— Laura Mulcahy

If you do holiday baking, freeze an extra batch of everything so you have it for the person you forgot, the neighbor you want to reciprocate giving. If they’re still in the freezer on Christmas, set it all out with desserts. Sam’s Club regularly has $50 gift cards (2-$25) for $37.50 and $100 (4-$25) for $79.98 to various places.

— Kara Montgomery

When I peruse Cargo Largo, I'll pick up gifts for the discounted price then. I also keep running Amazon wish lists for every person in our family so that I can send it on to grandparents when they ask for a list!

— Kelsey Pomeroy

I have big bags that I separate the kids presents in, and try to wrap everything ahead of time. Santa doesn’t wrap so on Christmas Eve, we are ready to put it all out. We only do four gifts: something you want, something to wear, something you need and something to read. Really cuts down on holiday spending!

— Emily Gafford

With my siblings and parents, we do one guy gift and one girl gift, and it’s supposed to be a few of your favorite things. Usually $75ish dollars. Everyone walks away with a nice gift of stuff they will actually use and the person giving it had a fun time shopping and gifting it. We buy no other gifts other than that, and it makes the holiday so enjoyable and easy. There’s usually a game involved to pick your present that has to do with gambling.

— Kristin Ruthstrom

We use Acorns to save for our holiday budget all year without thinking about it. The app just rounds up all the purchases we put on our card and puts the change in an account, plus we have an automatic $10 that comes out each week. Definitely not how it’s supposed to be used and maybe there are better apps, but especially with money tight on maternity leave, I’m glad we did it!

In today’s episode, we focus on the people in our community who we are grateful for but who are rarely in the spotlight. These people don’t necessarily have a day dedicated to them where we would show our appreciation like Teacher Appreciation Week, Mother’s Day or Boss’s Day. They are the school crossing guards helping kids to safety during all kinds of weather. They are the Door Dash drivers, bringing food to you when your kid is sick. They are the people behind the scenes that make it all happen.

Sherita Neal, KCMC’s Community Manager, joins us for this conversation.

Who are those people behind the scenes in your life? We hope you take the time this season to exercise patience and gratitude this season! We want to connect with you! You can always e-mail us. Or find us on Instagram or Facebook.
