Mr. Constitution Hour by Douglas V. Gibbs: No Democracy Lasts Long, Part 1; New York Times writer Jennifer Szalai wrote an article recently titled "The Constitution is Sacred. Is It Also Dangerous?" Her inspiration comes from the book, "No Democracy Lasts Forever: How the Constitution Threatens the United States" by Erwin Chemerinsky. This week Mr. Constitution begins his examination of the article, line by line. Some of the topics discussed in this week's episode include: Donald Trump's alleged comment about terminating the Constitution, How the Constitution is anti-democratic, Whether or not the Constitution is dysfunctional, the Electoral College, the Supreme Court, the Three Branches of Government, Secession, Tyranny, Slavery, Three-Fifths Compromise, Atlantic Slave Trade, Frederick Douglass and the Abolition Movement, and the importance of context and what was truly the reasons behind the compromises reached during the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

The proposed economic policies by Kamala Harris are not just what Biden's policies were, or what past Democratic Party progressive policies have been, but something much more radical. Harris promotes with her policies straight out communism ... Price Control, Rent Control, increased Corporate Taxes, establishing unrealized capital gains taxation, and increased government control over doing business ... all failed communist policies that if put into action will completely destroy the American economic system. And, they are all not in line with the United States Constitution nor what the Founding Fathers intended. Mr. Constitution explains.

The United Nations is calling for international policies to supersede the Constitution of the United States. At first President Wilson followed George Washington's advice to stay out of foreign entanglements, and he even ran his reelection on the slogan that he kept America out of the World War that had erupted in Europe. During Wilson's second term, however, the U.S. entered the war. After the war ended a spirit of globalism swept across the world, with Woodrow Wilson leading the way with his League of Nations. However, globalism failed, and communism was on the march after it took over Russia and launched the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. A Red Scare in America made it clear that the United States population was not interested in socialism, yet through various methods, and the rise of labor unions, socialism was beginning to make its mark in the Democratic Party. The South was devastated by the war, former slaves were taught to become dependent upon government benefits, and carpetbaggers took advantage of the situation and dominated politics in the South. Out of the melee rose mighty industries and innovations, which eventually strengthened the country as a whole, and connected her through new states and railroad lines from sea to shining sea. After enduring the War of 1812 and a mercantilistic attack from Britain, America emerged with growth ahead of it, which included migration into the western frontier and the growth of trade among the states. During the presidencies of James Monroe and John Quincy Adams the years became known as the Era of Good Feeling. However, as the Federalist Party faded into history, strife within the Jeffersonian Republican Party was amiss; leading to the party becoming the Democratic-Republican Party, and ultimately the Democratic Party led by Andrew Jackson. President Jackson eliminated the Second Bank of the United States and the National Debt, but also pushed for Democracy and a consolidation of power at the federal level. The Whig Party rose to challenge Jackson, only to face its own inner strife over slavery. In 1854 the Republican Party, which also came to be known as the Grand Ol' Party (GOP) was formed, splitting the Whigs, and providing a new challenge to the Jacksonian Democrats. Mr. Constitution, Douglas V. Gibbs, explains the details of those years during the Antebellum Period, as well as why knowing history is so important when it comes to paving our way forward along the road to the future.

The turn of the nineteenth century marked the rise of an industrial revolution, and a change from President John Adams' Hamiltonian ideas to President Thomas Jefferson's laissez-faire approach. And, during that time, we saw the birth of judicial review. Political tension and a new century made for an interesting period of history. As the prosperity and merchant activity of the English Colonies grew, laws by the British Parliament began to target colonial trade and production of goods to protect English merchants who were complaining about colonial competition. The collusion of English merchants and government was known as "mercantilism." As the tyranny and taxes by Britain increased, a Great Awakening was launched by Pastor Jonathan Edwards, and Reverend George Whitefield, which would open the eyes of the colonists to the despotic tyranny on the rise in their land.

Our mixed Constitution was designed to establish a balance between democracy and aristocracy, while also ensuring the state legislatures were able to practice oversight over the new federal government in the hopes of denying the central government the opportunity to consolidate all power as would a "national" government. Our American System contains mechanisms that connect our government to the idea of popular sovereignty, be it the consent of the governed to democratic elections for some parts of our system. The Temperance Movement, which had launched in the 1820s, gained its ultimate prize in 1919 with the 18th Amendment. Prohibition lasted almost fifteen years, but was eventually repealed by the 21st Amendment. Prohibition was the result of the political involvement of women, which also led to the Women's Suffrage Movement and the 19th Amendment which put into the Constitution the requirement of all States to allow women to vote regardless of their sex. Shortly after that, in an effort to properly clarify and articulate the processes involved in the Presidential Election, and what should happen if a candidate dies or is not qualified, the 20th Amendment was proposed and ratified. John Adams wrote, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." What did Adams mean? How does class warfare and critical race theory challenge such ideas, and how can we get back to those godly principles that Adams claimed we must hang on to? Douglas V. Gibbs, Mr. Constitution, explains.

A segment of the population will tell you that the Constitution and the founding of the United States was based on secular principles by secular persons. The language of our founding documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, says otherwise. In this episode of the Mr. Constitution Hour by Douglas V. Gibbs the man known as Mr. Constitution not only explains that there are biblical principles present throughout our founding, but identifies them both with placement in our founding documents and by chapter and verse from the Holy Bible.

Evidence supports the idea of a Christian Founding, and the primary resource used by the Founding Fathers according to studies show that 34% of the time the Bible was the source used. Galatians 5:1 provides us information about liberty, and our pursuit of it rather than us allowing ourselves to give in to bondage. The U.S. Constitution, based on principles of liberty, is worth fighting for by Christians because our freedom also preserves our Christian Liberty to practice worship as we desire, and to pursue the Great Commission. The question, then, is if that is the case, then what does the Bible say about civil disobedience? The right to keep and bear arms? Are there times when Christians have the right, and perhaps even the duty, to stand against government? Mr. Constitution, Douglas V. Gibbs, explains.

What is the difference between the rule of law and the rule of man? At what point do we establish that man is not supposed to mess with laws that are in God's Jurisdiction? Mr. Constitution, Douglas V. Gibbs, explains that the very foundation and keystone of our system of liberty is based on the idea that the rule of law is based on God's Law, and the idea that we are endowed by God with our natural rights.

America's Covenant With God. A listener asked me in an email if the Declaration of Independence was a covenant with God, and if the Founding Fathers understood the seriousness of making such a covenant. If so, are we not in danger of betraying that covenant in today's perilous period of history? Mr. Constitution Douglas V. Gibbs answers the listener's questions, lays out the history of our covenant with the Creator, and details the path we need to take for a new Great Awakening.

American Exceptionalism has been offered by those who oppose the American System as being a type of arrogance where those who believe in the idea of American Exceptionalism believe the United States can do no wrong. Greatness is not the definition of American Exceptionalism, greatness and prosperity is the outcome. American Exceptionalism has more to do with uniqueness, and the willingness of the Founding Fathers to create a system that is the exception to the rule, rather than follow the same path to tyranny associated with having an aristocratic ruling elite. There are six tenets that form American Exceptionalism, and Douglas V. Gibbs goes over those tenets in this episode.

The Christian Foundation of the United States is mixed with Saxon influences, and research of various republics in history. The Framers of the United States Constitution, however, were full aware that without the hand of God the American Revolution would have been lost. Therefore, the miracle of our American System of Government did not emerge until after the delegation took Dr. Benjamin Franklin's advice and gave the Constitutional Convention up to prayer. Douglas V. Gibbs explains how the pillars of Christianity supports our system of government, and that, if we are not a godly people, we are not capable of liberty.
