In this episode we take a deep dive into authenticity with the wonderful T Mark Meyer. As leaders we are all encouraged to be authentic but what does that mean and is it even possible to be authentic in the business world? These are just some of the fascinating topics we discuss as we explore authenticity and its link to our values, purpose, and self-esteem.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“One of the things about authenticity that is often misunderstood is a lot of people think that being an authentic leader or being authentic is about me being me. But it's not an ego thing, it’s only half of the equation that I have to be me. The other half is that I have to allow other people to also be their authentic selves. I have to create a space for authenticity that people can step into.”

T. Mark Meyer is a psychotherapist and a consultant for the world’s largest corporations, leading workshops on conflict resolution, authenticity, and authentic management. He coaches professional athletes in discovering their purpose and counsels both couples and individuals. After founding and spearheading several successful companies, T. In this episode we take a deep dive into the world of leadership in academia. During this fascinating conversation Peter shares with us his career journey from academic biologist to Chief Executive of the Microbiology Society. Delving into his biggest leadership learnings, we explore the importance of values and being honest, however hard that may be.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“The future is not about giving up what you value, what you do might change, but your values don't. What you do on a daily basis doesn't matter. What matters is, why you're doing it and what the values are, the purpose of it. Leadership is not about being so clever that you can make anyone do anything. It's about surrounding yourself with a set of people who have the same values as you and therefore want to achieve the same things for you to achieve.”

ABOUT PETER

After an early career as an academic biologist, Peter worked at London Zoo doing everything from ecology research in Ethiopia to holding on to the feet of a celebrity who was hanging upside down in a tree to promote bat conservation. For nine years, he was Director of Campaign for Science and Engineering, working in Westminster and Whitehall to ensure policies that maximised the excellence of British science. He spent seven years as a Director of the Royal Society before joining the Microbiology Society as Chief Executive, where he works with his fifty talented and dedicated colleagues to amplify the voices of experts on tiny, invisible life forms that affect everything from health to food security and climate change.

In this episode, we take a deep dive into recruitment and more specifically senior leadership recruitment within the Estates/Facilities Management area of higher education. With over 25 years’ experience in this field, Michael shares with us his top tips for securing a director level role. In addition, we explore the skills universities are looking for in their senior leaders: emotional intelligence and soft skills, demonstrable experience of driving transformational change and a real understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“The thing that gets people a job, are those soft skills. There will always be core things that people are looking for. They might want a degree for instance, sometimes they like to see MBAs and there's a kind of core level of competency that they expect, but what gets you the job, is the soft skills, it's the emotional intelligence. Qualifications get you in the door, but it's the other aspects that are going to get you the job.”

ABOUT MICHAEL

Since joining The Management Recruitment Group in 2008, Michael, a founding member, is now a board director and shareholder. Specialising in education, he also spearheads niche brands University People and Schools Leadership.

With over 25 years in estates and facilities management recruitment, Michael ardently believes in the transformative power of career choices.

Beyond his professional realm, he serves as a Trustee for the Keaton Emery Foundation, extending mental health support to children in North-West England through the charity Centrepoint. In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

E057 Managing Change & Transformation with Gareth Duffin

E058 Let Nature be Your Compass with Rosie Tomkins

E059 The Importance of Onboarding with Hayley Mintern

E060 Motivating Your Team with Sam Glenister-Batey

E061 Conversation Not Communication with Susan Heaton-Wright

Reflecting on the final words of wisdom, shared by each of her guests, Mel considers how their insight might help people on their leadership journey:

Gareth encouraged us to blame the process not the person when something goes wrong.

Rosie inspired us to have more confidence and belief in ourselves by looking for internal validation, recognising that we have everything we need inside of us.

Hayley chose to leave us with the words of James Baldwin, “Not everything that is faced can be changed but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

Sam offered us his perspective that as leaders we should measure ourselves on the achievements of our team rather than our own work.

Susan reminded us that we are all unique. We all have a voice and should make sure that we let other people know about our opinions, ideas, and values because we will add to the conversation.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we need to look inwards to give ourselves, the confidence to take responsibility, rather than looking to blame, to face in to challenges so that we can affect change, to look and think, ‘How can I best serve my team? How can I best support them?’ And how can I ensure that I'm having conversations with people, rather than just communicating with them?”

In this episode, we take a deep dive into why it is more productive to have conversations rather than communication. As a former opera singer, Susan shares with us her five-step SuperStar Communicator methodology and why it is important to own our space and ensure that as leaders we are listening as well as speaking.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“There are a lot of things that we can do with the voice, to make it interesting, to engage our audience, but also to have that self-awareness that we could have what I call emotional leakages from our voice. We could be saying something very profound but our nerves could distract our audience and put a question mark next to our credibility.”

She empowers emerging leaders to communicate with impact, confidence, clarity, and credibility in all business conversations for career success. In this episode, we take a deep dive into onboarding and why it is so important. Having worked in educational recruitment for the past ten years and recently moved companies, Hayley shares with us her thoughts around what makes a successful onboarding process. Ensuring that we don’t apply a one size fits all model is key. Other important elements include transparency, trust, and flexibility.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“For me onboarding isn't the first day, the second day, the third day. It's not even the first week. It's the first six months because it's a journey and you're learning. People do have to hit the ground running, but you need to have check points throughout that period, because things can change quickly, especially in the hybrid world that we work in. It can take six months, even a year for some people to really embed into an organisation and be able to flourish.”

ABOUT HAYLEY

Hayley has supported the education sector for the last ten years, providing executive search and interim and consultancy solutions to Independent Schools, Academy Trusts, FE Colleges, and Universities. Her speciality is understanding the education sector and connecting talent that is passionate about providing high quality inclusive education. Hayley has built a track record with education leaders and helped many organisations identifying top talent.

Hayley has a passion for education, she is chair of governors for MAT working closely with the head and trust leaders to ensure excellent levels of education. She previously worked closely with England Rugby Schools to deliver inclusive sport in schools and has strong understanding of the curriculum.

During this fascinating conversation, Rosie shares with us, the incredible work she is doing with individuals and teams, using nature and horses to help them celebrate their strengths and understand the importance of internal validation.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“All the intelligences are important but currently it's like a three-legged stool, we've got IQ, EQ (emotional intelligence) and SQ (spiritual intelligence). For me it needs to be a four-legged chair, which includes NQ (natural intelligence) and the reason for this is because it's suppressed at the moment.”

ABOUT ROSIE

Rosie Tomkins, an accomplished author and leadership expert, advocates for integrating nature's wisdom into personal and professional growth. Her upcoming book, "Let Nature Be Your Compass," blends natural principles with self-help and leadership strategies. In this episode, we take a deep dive into change and transformation. Change is tough and together with Gareth, we explore why so few change projects are successful. Reflecting on his own experiences of transformation, Gareth shares his top tips to help us navigate the world of change and ensure we achieve our desired outcomes.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Change theory will tell you to build a consensus for your change right at the beginning. What people don't do enough is the step before that and identify exactly what people think about what should change. Instead they decide in a leadership group.”

ABOUT GARETH

Gareth is an experienced operations & business change leader, with successful roles in Private Equity backed Residential, Purpose-Built Student Accommodation and Hospitality. He co-founded the consulting group Method Avenue in 2022, focusing on helping organisations with Transformation & Change. Gareth is also a vocal advocate for improving support for families who have Neurodiverse children, as both his young children are Neurodiverse. Gareth also hosts the Podcast focusing on people’s experiences with change, Know Your Shift.

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

E051 Look After Your Mental Health with Rosie Tressler OBE

E052 Self-Awareness is Key with Nicola Arnold

E053 Being a Mindful Leader with Dr Reiner Kraft

E054 US Higher Education Trends with Lori Capullo

E055 Managing Redundancy with John Burns

Reflecting on the final words of wisdom, shared by each of her guests, Mel considers how their insight might help people on their leadership journey:

  • Rosie encouraged us to be deliberate about our own mental health and get better at saying no.

  • Nicola, meanwhile, inspired us to be a positive disruptor and asked the question, “Where are you creating space right now to do new things?”

  • For Reiner, he wanted us to practice being mindful for one minute, starting small and building up from there.

  • Lori reminded us of the importance of listening. Listen not to respond but truly hear what is being said.

  • And finally, John Burns advised not to stay in a job that isn’t right for us.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Self-awareness is the greatest skill we can have as leaders because we turn our attention inwards instead of looking outside for answers. And that isn't always a comfortable process, holding a mirror up to ourselves. We have to get comfortable with who we are with knowing our superpowers, but also those blind spots that can trip us up. When we have self-awareness, we have choice. We can choose how we act and behave.”

In this episode, we take a deep dive into redundancy, how it feels to be made redundant and what lessons can we take away as leaders, if we ever have to manage a redundancy programme. A former accountant, John shares with us his own experience of redundancy and his insights which are helpful to both employers and employees.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“For people who are made redundant, I always say give yourself a couple of months break first. Don't try and dive into doing something straight away because you have to leave your previous employer mentally. They've left you, but you still have to take that break, and mentally work through why you were made redundant, get your energy levels back up again and be more positive about life. Then you can look to your future.”

ABOUT JOHN

John is a career coach and professional speaker. He works with professional people who have been made redundant. They want to return to employment or start a business of their dreams.

John is the executive producer and host of the GYFT Show. The acronym GYFT means Get Your Future Together. John has published 8 seasons of the GYFT Show on his YouTube channel and is preparing for season 9, for which the theme is monetisation.

In this episode, we dive into higher education in the United States. Together with Lori, we explore the major challenges that are currently facing leaders in the sector, falling enrolment figures, a lack of student engagement, an increase in mental health incidents and the impact of AI. During this high energy conversation Lori shares with us how different institutions are responding to these issues and why she is so passionate about the work she is doing in this space.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“What we're hearing over and over again, is the importance of communication and interaction with the students and communication with their families. For me, the people I remember from college, the leaders that I remember, are the ones who engaged with us. The President is the one who sets that tone and what we're hearing from them is that they really are trying to make sure communications are better and students feel comfortable and welcome and part of the community.”

In this episode, we dive into the benefits of being a mindful leader. Having spent much of his career in Silicon Valley, Reiner shares with us his approach for becoming a Mindful leader. It is one that brings together science and mindfulness. During this fascinating conversation we explore how you can create a high-performance mindset by combining awareness, mind, and body and the importance of measuring your level of present awareness.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“I compare the mind to a piece of software. Nowadays I call it the mind operating system. It is something that can be programmed. It can of course be changed and updated. There are lots of bugs in it. I've seen the effects of poor leadership in the workplace and it's all happening because of sub-optimal mind operating systems.”

In this episode, we dive into the topic of mental health and well-being. As Chief Executive of the charity Student Minds, Rosie shares with us why she feels it is important to be both inclusive and relevant as a leader and how she prioritises her own health & well-being. We also explore the importance of having a joined-up approach to mental health and how the charity’s mental health charter is helping universities achieve this.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“For me, leadership is about being courageous. That means you don't always take the easy option, it means sometimes you do things, or you have to convey things that aren’t popular, or will disappoint some people. And it means you have to be willing to sit with dealing with a lot of risk, but not let that stop you from doing and advocating for the things that you know, right.”

E046 Turn Your Passion into Purpose with Julie Perkins

E047 Affordability is Key with Alan Hilton

E048 The Power of Coaching with Julia Bend

E049 Overcoming Limiting Beliefs with Jeremy Lazarus

Reflecting on the final words of wisdom, shared by each of her guests, Mel considers how their insight might help people on their leadership journey:

  • Hulya reminded us that life is like a dance. Sometimes it's rock and roll. Sometimes it's a foxtrot. Sometimes a slow dance. Sometimes we need to slow down. Sometimes we go two steps ahead, three steps back. That’s normal.

  • Julie encouraged us as leaders to question ourselves. Who are you as a leader and is there enough space between you and what you are doing. For Julie this is the golden nugget, as it gives everyone the opportunity to be the best they can be.

  • For Allan it is all about honesty & integrity and not changing who you are.

  • Julia, meanwhile, prompted us to remember “it is never too late to be what you might have been.

  • And Jeremy would agree, he believes that people can be more successful than they think.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Everyone has the power to be completely and utterly brilliant. The journey is not an easy one, you will need to dive deep. But if you are prepared to do the work you can be more than you might have been.”

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Understanding different cultures is particularly important in the student environment but you do have to adapt because the world is changing. I’m lucky I have a job that aligns with my values.”

In this episode, we explore how you can turn your passion into purpose. Sharing her journey, we discuss how Julie has taken her experience of working in a large multi-national organisation to help build her own business Wyseminds which supports entrepreneurs on their journey to success. Packed full of helpful insights Julie also explains and why, for her, leadership is a recipe for failure and curiosity.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“The biggest lesson of leadership I had was about trust and the space to let go. As a leader you have to ask yourself about blocks. It has to be about who am I as a leader, and have I got enough space between me and what I'm doing? That space is the biggest golden nugget that you'll have. And it gives room for everybody to be the best that they can be.”

ABOUT JULIE

Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, Julie was always going to cut her commercial teeth at an early age. After studying business and working in the United States, she put her knowledge to the test by joining the family company, Specsavers, and went on to work her way up through the ranks to country director, setting up and establishing the market leader in the Netherlands. After more than 20 years – and building on her extensive experience of industry and her wide-ranging expertise as a leader – Julie founded her own company, Wyseminds, to mentor fellow female entrepreneurs setting out on their own journey, helping them to find purpose and passion in whatever they do. Living and breathing the world of start-ups (and setting them on the road to success), Julie is also an author, public speaker, and podcaster.

In this episode, we explore what it means to overcome roadblocks and create sustainable change. Having worked for many years in a large multinational organisation, Huyla shares with us her journey to become a coach and mentor. We explore how she helps her clients reframe their misbeliefs and why she chooses to use the term feed forward instead of feedback.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Our roadblocks come from our misbeliefs, but we cannot immediately change our mindset. Change means repetition, repetition, repetition. You do something once. You see the outcome and that nothing went wrong so you do it again, seeing it get better and better. This is how change happens. It’s a slow process because we don’t have a magic wand.”

ABOUT HUYLA

After 32 years of working within a multinational company, Huyla chose to follow her passion of becoming a coach, mentor and workshop facilitator. She motivates and empowers company management teams and their employees to move forward in their professional life. Additionally, she specialises in growth management with young adults and teenagers, assisting them through anxieties, fears, and internal roadblocks.

In this episode, we explore what it means to lead by your values. Having started out her career in retail, Sarah shares with us her transition to the student accommodation sector and some of the lessons she has leaned along the way. As current Chair of ASRA we dive deep into her leadership journey and how she realised that being the best leader she could be, meant being her true authentic self rather than trying to emulate other people.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“When I first started my career, I spent a long time looking up to, other leaders and managers, thinking, ‘oh, I really want to be like you.’ You try and adapt your style to be like that person and then you see somebody else and think, ‘I want to be like that person.’ Suddenly it dawned on me to just be myself. Through being myself, being friendly, and being everything that makes me who I am, I am a better leader.”

ABOUT SARAH

Sarah Reynolds currently works at Brunel University as the Deputy Head of Student Living. She is also the current ASRA chair. Sarah has worked within the student accommodation world for the past eight years both in the University & PBSA sectors. She spent the first half of her career in retail, starting her journey as many people do; working part-time whilst juggling studies. It’s from here that her passion for people really developed and she began her management career. Sarah loves working within this sector. The vibrancy of the students that she works with, and the dynamics of her teams makes each day different. She feels lucky to have a job she enjoys so much and a career that has taken her down very different paths.

Chatting with Martin we discussed two words that you don’t often see together serenity and leadership. Meanwhile Robert shared his experience of moving from the retail sector to higher education and the change journey his team has been on since he joined Glasgow University. Finally with Eleri, we heard how curiosity and courageousness has taken her on adventures she never would have expected.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Sometimes, especially in the work environment we don’t often feel that we have a choice. But we always have a choice about how we respond. As leaders we need to demonstrate courageousness and sometimes go against the flow. We need to stand up for what is right.”

In this episode, we explore what it means to be curious and courageous. To not follow a plan and trust the process. Together with Eleri, we dive deep into those pivotal moments in her life when she showed great courage and discover how she realised in her early fifties she didn’t really know herself at all. Having worked at Aberystwyth University for over twenty-five years, Eleri also reflects on this time with the knowledge she has acquired since re-training as a Creative Kinesiologist.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“For me, in my heart, what leadership means, is the ability to see the potential, of the people that you are working with. To be able to journey with them. To be able to create a vision for the future, and for them to be able to actively create it, to be active participants. And so, the leader provides the environment, they provide the tools for the people around them to be able to be the best people/person, whoever they would like to become.”

ABOUT ELERI

Eleri grew up in Aberystwyth, a beautiful University town situated on the coast of Cardigan Bay in Wales. She studied Hospitality Management at the College of Food in Birmingham before starting her working life in a variety of managerial roles in hotels and restaurants in Bath and Bournemouth.

At age 24 she packed her bags and left for a year to travel and work in Australia following a promise to a college friend. The college friend found love which resulted in a mainly solo trip. On returning to the UK she changed direction slightly and went to work for Aberystwyth University, where she stayed for the next 25 years. During that time, she married, had a family, and worked in a variety of different roles from Assistant Accommodation Manager to Deputy Director of Residential and Hospitality Services.

In 2013 she was gifted the opportunity to have some coaching which led in 2015 to a fabulous 4-week trip to Egypt which turned out to be life changing. Age 50 she took her next big life decision which coincided with her Chiron return and left her job to train as a Creative Kinesiologist which is where we find her now.

In this episode, we dive deep into the world of change and collaboration. Having moved from the retail sector to higher education, Robert shares his journey since joining the University of Glasgow. We explore what his team want to be famous for, and how they have become more comfortable managing the ‘grey’, understanding that often things aren’t either right or wrong, black, or white, yes or no.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Spending time helping people to understand where they fit in to the overarching plan, to the overarching goals and helping them to understand how best to use and manage those relationships and connections between them, is critical because you'll ultimately get more done as a result.”

ABOUT ROBERT

Robert joined Higher Education, having spent 17 years working for the John Lewis Partnership. A graduate of the University of St Andrews, his retail experience spans the length and breadth of the UK from in a variety of store and head office roles. Immediately prior to joining the University of Glasgow he was Head of Branch at John Lewis Aberdeen, having previously fulfilled the same role for a new store opening in York in 2014.

Commercial Services was a newly formed function at Glasgow in 2018 and includes Catering & Events, Accommodation, Retail, Sport, Print, and the University Nursery. With a combined annual turnover of some £36m, previously these individual services were all managed separately, so the bringing together provided an ideal platform for growth in revenue and contribution, business development and improvement in customer experience.

Diversifying capability and introducing new opportunities is back underway post-pandemic with several projects including the opening of 5 new catering propositions (delivered through a profit-sharing subsidiary company), work to deliver additional bedspaces and the introduction of a convenience retail offer.

In this episode, we dive deep into serenity and peace. Together with Martin, we explore whether it really is possible to achieve serenity in leadership and the benefits of developing such an approach. Sharing tools and tips that he has learned throughout his life, Martin explains why he believes as leaders there are times when we need to be proactive and other occasions when we need to lean back and chill.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“When you talk with people who are doing great things or have made astonishing discoveries connecting the dots and ask them when this happened, they rarely, if ever, say we got this in a seven-hour meeting. They say, oh yeah, it came to me whilst I was running, in the shower, washing my car or ironing my shirt. All sorts of stuff where you disengage from cognitive activity. This is when the intelligence of the heart and gut can bubble up and connect the dots for you.”

ABOUT MARTIN

Martin Laschkolnig is the founder and director of the “Institut fur Potentialentwicklung” (Institute for the Development of Potential) in Linz, Austria. He is a Past President of the German Speakers Association (www.germanspeakers.org) and has been an inspirational speaker to audiences on 4 continents from San Diego to South Africa, from Costa Rica to the Himalayas and across Europe.

He is an expert for motivation, self-esteem, confidence, and inner peace and how these affect leaders, their teams and the performance of people and enterprises. In this episode, we dive deep into the power of sound and the impact it can have on our mental clarity and focus. Having discovered sound healing whilst living and working in Dubai, Charlie shares the science behind this ancient healing modality and the impact it has had on her life and those people she now works with across the globe.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“I have never been a big fan of the word leadership. I don’t see myself as a leader because I am no different to you. I’m not there to tell people what to do, we’re doing it together. It’s the same as the sound healing work I am doing right now. This is the goal; this is what we are aiming for and what we need to do. Let’s do it together. There is no separation.”

ABOUT CHARLIE

Charlie is founder and owner of Thyme with Charlie. A yoga teacher and sound healer she has been running her own internationally certified Sound Healing Academy with Tibetan Singing bowls for several years.

Having been exposed to the holistic healing world since birth she has always been fascinated by what the human eye can’t see. Charlie learnt Reiki at 15 years old and practised on anyone whom she was drawn to help, including the family pets.

Charlie discovered sound healing whilst living in Dubai and immediately connected with it. The practice aided the healing of both physical and emotional ailments and after seeing and feeling the results, she was hooked on this ancient healing modality. Since then, she has developed her healing abilities as an intuitive lightworker and energy healer and now works across the world to help people to find their true self and inner peace.

In this episode we dive deep into the world of conflict and conflict resolution. When she was twenty-seven years old, Jo’s father Sir Anthony Berry was killed by the IRA in the 1984 Brighton hotel bombing. Faced with her grief, Jo chose to give up on revenge and instead find a way to bring peace to the situation. Sixteen years later Jo met with the man responsible, Pat Magee and since then they have shared a platform speaking together on more than 300 occasions. As Jo shares her story, we explore how replacing our need to control and blame others with unbounded empathy can help us become better leaders.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Leadership is the ability to have empathy with everyone in the organisation, to recognise one's own patterns of wanting to blame and control. I don't think controlling works. Leadership works with people. They're not there with all the answers, that does not create a safe listening, empathic culture. A leader will be able to have boundaries and will be able to challenge people, but in a way, which is about the dignity, without shaming, without making them wrong. And they'll give people space to make mistakes and learn from them.”

ABOUT JO

Jo Berry is an inspiring speaker who works to resolve conflict around the world. Founder of the charity ‘Building Bridges for Peace’, Jo advocates that unbounded empathy is the biggest weapon we have to end conflict. With political, religious, and racial divides deepening as global and local events unfold, her words offer a message of hope and encourage us all to see the humanity in others.

Jo is frequently invited to address international conferences and seminars on themes of reconciliation, conflict resolution and peace. She has given talks and workshops in areas around the world including Lebanon and Rwanda, India, South Korea, Palestine, and Israel as well as throughout the U.K. She has also joined panels and discussions forums on radio and TV.

In recent years Jo has developed workshops in schools and with youth groups on topics of conflict transformation, storytelling, becoming positive changemakers, and challenging violent extremism. She is a TEDx speaker and a Visiting Fellow with the University of Nottingham (Research Primary Area in Rights and Justice). Jo is also trained as a Restorative Justice facilitator and is an advocate for Restorative Justice around the country.

E034 It’s About People Not Numbers with Rachel Lee

E035 Managing & Perceiving Emotions with Kevin Conn

E0326 Challenge the Status Quo with Deenie Lee & Sarah Canning

Four guests, three fabulous conversations discussing leadership and different aspects of higher education. With Rachel we explored the challenges of selling academic venues when they are not being used for core student activities. With Kevin, we dived into the importance of emotional intelligence and how it is a necessary skill for all leaders. And finally with Deenie and Sarah, we delved into the world of strategic marketing and how they are challenging the status quo with the research they have undertaken into what students want from their accommodation.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“How many times are you involved in internal struggles? I don't like this person. I don't like that person. When we find that we don't like somebody, we start to look for stories that confirm our beliefs. Well, how about you stop that and start to celebrate your differences, understanding that by celebrating those differences, you can achieve more together.”

In this episode, we dive deep into emotional intelligence, which Kevin defines as the ability to manage and perceive emotions. Having spent nearly fifteen years working with and researching the topic we explore why Kevin believes it is a key leadership skill and how emotional intelligence can improve team performance and engagement.

KEY TAKEAWAY

‘It’s all about how you treat people. How are you impacting others with your emotional management? Your reaction to your team, your friends, your colleagues can make their day better, or potentially worse, and it's being able to realise your impact. We are wired to act first and think second, that’s just the way our brain works. Taking a pause, and saying ‘what is my best reaction to this’ makes all the difference.”

ABOUT KEVIN

Kevin provides leadership and oversight for Student Housing and Residential Life at California State University Northridge. He received his Doctorate in Education from New York University and has experience working in small and large, private and public institutions. Kevin has and continues to serve on local, regional, and national associations within residence life and LGBTQ+ advocacy. He has nearly fifteen years of experience working with and researching the topic of emotional intelligence and related dynamics within both student and professional staff. Kevin has a strong passion for research turned engagement and has partnered with colleagues on international ACUHO-I grant-funded research projects focused on the evolving role of the Resident Assistant. Furthermore, he just published a book entitled Evolving Landscape of Residential Education, which is a collaboration with several global colleagues in the field. In his spare time, he is an avid marathon runner, foodie, and travel enthusiast.

In this episode, we dive deep into the world of sales, what it means in the world of higher education and why as leaders we need to be comfortable selling. Having worked in hospitality sales for much of her career, Rachel shares with us some of her experiences working as Head of Sales & Marketing at Warwick Conferences and how, through her work with Academic Venue Solutions, she now wants to support colleagues across the UK, who are selling their university’s facilities for conferences and events.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“When you when you're in sales, you have to be inquisitive, you need to get to know what makes people tick, you need to understand, how to work out whether, what you've got is right for them, you've got to come up with the right solution. And it's so much more in depth than what people perceive as selling, as being pushy. For me, it wasn't ever about that it was always about getting to know the person.”

ABOUT RACHAEL

Rachael started out her sales career in conference centres, moving to hotels and then more latterly the academic sector, with 10 years as Head of Sales & Marketing at Warwick Conferences, part of the University of Warwick. Rachael left Warwick Conferences to start up her own business in November 2017 as RB Associates, a consultancy to help support venues with their sales strategies and now runs Academic Venue Solutions as Membership Director full time. Rachael has volunteered as Chair of the European chapter of IACC for 2 years and has recently become a Mental Health First Aider.

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

030 Burn Bright Not Out with Donna Smith

031 The Cost of Generational Diversity with Neerja Singh

032 Communicate with Impact with Patrick Donadio

Three wonderful conversations filled with a plethora of hints and tips which could be helpful to you on your leadership journey. Together Donna and I explored the signs of burn out and what practical steps you can take to ensure you never get taken off your feet in the same way she did. With Neerja, we dived deep into the cost of generational diversity. A wonderfully brave and honest woman, she shared with us her own deeply personal journey and why she is on a mission to ensure that others don’t experience the same loss. And finally, with Patrick we discussed the first three steps of his IMPACT process, which has been designed to help us better communicate.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we should be providing opportunities and opening doors for our team to walk through, to explore. The other thing is to remember that whilst we can do that, we can create the opportunities we can open doors, we can't change anybody else. We can't make our team walk through that door or take that opportunity or change. Only they can do that.”

In this episode, we dive deep into the world of communication, exploring how we can communicate with impact. At the start of his career, Patrick worked as a Residential Life Assistant and held numerous university roles before deciding to branch out on his own and specialise in communication. Nowadays he works with leaders and their teams, using his IMPACT process to help people better communicate their ideas and achieve greater results.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“When people communicate a lot of people start with the what, but I think it’s important to start with the why. What are some intentions for communicating? Maybe your intention is to inform, it might be to discover, it might be to persuade, build a relationship or give feedback. Those are all different intentions, and each intention would require a different approach. If I'm here to discover, I would hopefully be asking a lot more questions. If I'm here to inform. I'd be doing more talking.”

ABOUT PATRICK

Patrick is a communication strategist, speaker, coach, and author of Communicating with IMPACT. Patrick is one of a few people in the world to have earned the highest designations in both the speaking and coaching professions. Patrick delivers custom, high-value, in-person, and virtual presentations to help leaders and their teams communicate clearly, lead effectively, present powerfully, listen attentively, and make a greater IMPACT on their bottom line through his engaging keynotes, practical training programs, and one-on-one coaching.

Trigger warning: this episode includes discussion about suicide

In this episode, Neerja shares with us her passion for generational diversity. Driven by personal loss, she is keen to help parents, leaders and businesses understand how different generations view and interact with the world. Acknowledging that some of her knowledge has come through

hindsight, as well as a large amount of research and the experience of having a daughter who lived with depression, Neerja wants her hard-earned wisdom to support others, enabling them to create environments which will allow the younger generation to thrive and flourish.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Keep reminding yourself that you need to be a mighty generation. And remember it is not so much about knowledge, as it is about communication. Kind, gentle, open communication. Listen more than you talk. Say only 25% of what you want to say, particularly when you are trying to communicate with the next generation.”

ABOUT NEERJA

A millennial in spirit, with the benefit of hindsight, Neerja Singh calls herself the Seenager or the Senior Teenager. Four generational books, a YouTube channel on gen-next, a professional column on keeping pace with the young, and a signature Generational Quotient Kit, she helps turn generational differences into dividends @work and @home. She has 37 years in media and education, having worked in advertising, public relations, documentary filmmaking, teaching, and feature journalism. Her recent TEDx talk was entitled “The Unaffordable Cost of Generation Gap.” When not busy evangelizing collaboration, ethical cultures, and personal influence models, Neerja plays golf, does inter-city cycling and swims, a kilometre at a time.

In this episode Donna shares with us her journey from solicitor to HR professional and development consultant before starting her own coaching business Odonata in 2017. We explore why she is so passionate about helping her clients burn bright rather than out and learn how, by taking just five minutes a day for ourselves, we can ensure burnout doesn’t take us off our feet completely.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“There's a principle in the Burn Bright programme that I call 'No is a complete sentence'. Unless we put ourselves first, nothing else matters If our health is not in good shape we can't be there for our loved ones, show up for our clients, our colleagues. We can't make the difference we want to make in the world. It starts with us. So, learn to say yes to you.”

ABOUT DONNA

Donna is on her own journey of discovery. She is someone who has burnt out, someone who has faced several career crossroads, someone who struggles with perfectionism and that feeling of not being good enough. Basically, the types of challenges so many of us face every day. Why is this relevant? Because she has faced all these challenges (and still does) and yet she now gets to do what she loves every day. She burns bright (not out) and so can you!

Donna has an extensive range of experience in Coaching, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Leadership & Management Development, MBTI, Talent Development, and workshop facilitation. Donna is passionate about working with people who have reached that stage where they say, ‘enough is enough’ and they want to make a change for the better, they want to move forwards instead of staying stuck. She now works with a growing number of clients, helping them to ‘Burn Bright’, not out!

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Higher education is leading the way in terms of dealing with diversity; embedding it into its organisations and celebrating the diversity of us as a human race and how that diversity in a work environment can help improve performance. We’ve taken huge steps forward but there is more that needs to be done. We need to get over our fear and step into that place of curiosity.”

As an openly gay woman, working in higher education, Carley shares her journey with us, the highs, and the lows. From ‘coming out’ at nineteen to being told by a colleague that she would have to try harder in London because she was gay, fat, and northern, Carley gives us her perspective on how we can create more inclusive environments, which allow people to bring their true selves to work every day.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“The LGBTQ+ community, we want you to ask questions, we want you to ask what that acronym means. I don’t have a clue what most of the acronyms mean because they’re forever changing, because they’re personal and they’re different for every single individual, so you’re probably not always going to get it right. But it’s okay to not get it right. Be open with people and ask them what they prefer to be called.”

ABOUT CARLEY

Carley is the Student Experience Manager at the University of the Arts London. Originally from the north of England, she has worked within HE and charity sectors for 15 years supporting inclusivity in leadership and her roles. Having worked in a variety of operational roles in different sectors, Katrina admits that “customer service is in my blood.” During this fascinating conversation we deep dive into the role values had to play in the change programme she led at the University of Surrey. The aim was not just to create a customer service culture but embed a transformational shift that broke down silos and encouraged a mindset of continual improvement and service innovation.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“The reason why values are so important is because they tap into people’s personal beliefs. Our own values define the way we behave. When we tap into our own personal values, and we can find the connection between the organisation values and what's important to us, then that opens a door to transformational change. If you can really embed values into your organisation, you're on to a winner, you're absolutely on the right journey.”

ABOUT KATRINA

With over 12 years’ experience of working in the leisure industry, Katrina is an inspirational senior manager who makes things happen. She understands strategy and can take her team with her! In 2016 she moved to higher education, taking the professional lead on all aspects of customer service for Estates and Facilities Management and Commercial Services, heading up an inspiring cultural change programme for the department using the university’s values. Over the last two years Katrina has found her calling in the charity sector where she works for Jigsaw Trust, a charity inspired by autism who provide the very best in ongoing education, vocational and wellbeing services for autistic individuals.

As a clinical hypnotherapist, Caroline has spent the last twelve years helping people understand how their own thoughts and behaviours can create anxiety. With a belief that anxiety is good for us, and it can help us to grow, we dive deep into the process that Caroline uses to help people take leadership of their mind and build their mental resilience.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Anxiety is a more comfortable way for many people to describe fear. We all have anxiety because it is part of that intrinsic survival instinct. But it’s whether you can use that anxiety to allow you to grow or whether it is controlling you and stopping you from growing. It really comes back to that leadership of the fear, as opposed to the fear telling you what you can and can't do.”

ABOUT CAROLINE

Caroline Cavanagh is an anxiety Specialist, Professional Speaker, and Author. She helps people struggling with anxiety and stress and teaches them to increase their mental resilience which can transform their enjoyment in life. She developed the 5 step Anxiety Alchemy process that provides people with the knowledge to stop anxiety holding them back, and using it instead, to grow. 022 Leadership is a Partnership with Jordan Meates

023 Be the Leader of Your Mind with Duncan Bhaskaran Brown

024 Be Present & Listen with James Greenwood

Three insightful conversations with three fantastic human beings. Have you ever considered that leadership is a partnership or as a leader you could be fuelling your team’s bad habits or that sometimes all you need to do to help someone’s wellbeing is to be there and listen. These are just some of the topics we discuss in these episodes, which are packed with thought provoking ideas and insights which can help you fulfil your potential as a leader.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“I’ve worked with many managers that feel they have almost a right to power because of the position that they hold. But is that right? Should it be that way? If they changed their perspective, and thought of the relationship more in terms of a partnership, of an equal balancing of bringing together of people's various skills, experiences, and knowledge, would that change the dynamic? And would it be a more positive way to move forward?”

Diving into the world of well-being, James shares with us the importance of listening and recognising that as individuals, the way we each deal with our mental health will be different. Having worked at several universities, we explore James’ approach to leadership and why he believes you should say yes to everything, give it a go and have no regrets.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Sometimes we all get up in the morning, and think I can't be doing with work today, I can't, I'm really stressed. I think it's healthy to have those open discussions with your line manager around how best to structure your work. Sometimes that might mean having a day off here and there and treating wellbeing and mental health a bit more like physical health when we wake up with the flu or a cold. We should be openly discussing wellbeing in a much more positive way. But that's a new skill to learn.”

ABOUT JAMES

James is Head of Residential Life at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), taking the strategic lead for all aspects of community building and wellbeing support. He has worked within residential life for nearly 10 years at various universities across the UK and has created award-winning student experience programmes. Currently James is the UK Ambassador for the International Association of College and University Housing Officers. In this episode we dive deep into the world of bad habits, overindulgence, and addiction. As someone who regularly overindulged, Duncan cleaned up his act, when faced with the questions, ‘Do you want another drink, or do you want a child?” As he shares his story, we explore some of the science behind bad habits and how as managers we could inadvertently be encouraging them in our own team.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“You want to reward the team. What do you do? You buy them donuts. That's not a reward, in my opinion, that's a punishment. You know, that's, that's not like something to celebrate. That's something that actually makes you feel less good and makes you less good at your job. So why would you do that? I don't buy people chocolate or wine in the same way that I wouldn't buy them cigarettes or cocaine.”

ABOUT DUNCAN

Duncan has done his fair share of overindulgence, strictly speaking he’s drunk more than his fair share of wine and eaten more than his fair share of cake. Along the way he found himself in some interesting places like on stage with S-Club, a stint as Mayor of his hometown and Morris dancing in Westminster Abbey. After 20 years of over-doing it, he cleaned up his act and trained with the Easyway clinic, the world’s most successful stop smoking service. Now he spends his time helping people push over-indulgence out of their life. He lives in Abingdon with one wife, one daughter and two bonsai trees.

014 People Buy From People with Simon Horniblow

015 Regulate Your Nervous System with Paul Crick

016 Let Your Head & Heart Rule with ChaNan Bonser

Three incredible conversations, covering a range of topics including student engagement, why people buy from people, how we can regulate our nervous system and the benefits of coming out of our heads and into our bodies. As leaders, if we want to be the very best version of ourselves, we cannot do what we have always done because we will only get what we have always got. In their own ways, each guest encourages you to take a step outside of what might be comfortable and do something different. The question is are you brave enough to take up the challenge?

KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we don't need to have all the answers, but we do need to have the strength of character to be willing to acknowledge when we don't know something. I've met so many people who find this incredibly challenging to do, seeing it as a weakness and not a strength.”

KEY TAKEAWAY

In this episode we take a deep dive exploration into our nervous system and how by understanding what happens to us at neurobiological level, we can be better leaders. As a keyboard player with a fear of performing in public, and a reformed management consultant who experienced some pretty stressful and toxic work environments, Paul embarked on a journey of learning and self-discovery that led him to the belief that as leaders we need to work from the inside out.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“I want people to understand that a conversation is a neurobiological chain reaction. Think about meetings. It's a series of neurobiological chain reactions. And until we see the world through this lens, people are going to continue doing what they're doing, not knowing the impact of this on our neurophysiology or our neuro chemistry. How the hell are you going to manage teams, if you don't recognise, we're co creating our experience, and that this neurobiological chain reaction is happening.”

ABOUT PAUL

Paul is the Founder and Managing Partner of his own leadership development consultancy, The Elevate Partnership. He specialises in helping leaders and senior leadership teams to expand their inner character and capacity to enable them to lead at the next level. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for The Adagio College of Performing Arts and, until recently, served on the European Mentoring and Coaching Council board and the UK as Professional Development Director. KEY TAKEAWAY

“We know that everyone is not like us, but we don’t live it. Why? For me, the answer is simple. For us to live this statement, we must first understand who we are, we need to be able to recognise our superpowers, but also our blind spots. In this episode we dive deep into how our mindset can impact our capacity for change. Chatting with the wonderful Charlie Warshawski, who has worked closely with Carol Dweck, we explore her pioneering research into mindsets and how shifting our belief from, ‘I can’t do something.’ to ‘I haven’t yet learned the process,’ can help us grow.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“The mantra these days is praising effort, or praising process, rather than praise a person. The problem is that praise often undermines people's self-esteem. Often it sends a message to say we are praising and evaluating you. We are saying, we think you're brilliant, we own the view about whether this picture is good, this drawing is good, this piece of work is good, whether your intrinsic personality is good. Whereas if we step back from that a bit, and we start using descriptive praise, we can describe what we see. And if we're going to praise anything, we praise effort. We praise process.”

ABOUT CHARLIE

Charlie is an education leadership coach and trainer, specialising in supporting organisational, team and individual change. He offers 20 years of education, coaching and training experience, with a background that spans the education, voluntary and commercial sectors. He has worked with students as their mentor, with staff and leadership teams as their coach. Since 2015 Charlie has been part of a team working under the supervision of Professor Carol Dweck, author, and main researcher of mindset theory. The work has involved running in-depth programmes for teachers, helping them to develop a growth mindset culture.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“In recent years that’s the thing that has changed me the most, understanding that everyone’s not like me. We all know it. It’s one of those things you know but you don’t live it. For me, it's not what you are, that's the most important. Realising that other people are something else is more important than knowing what you are.”

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes

005 The Answer is Inclusion with Linbert Spencer OBE

006 Workplace Wellbeing with Bobbi Hartshorne

007 Turn Customer Service Inwards with Andrew McMillan

Three conversations about three very different topics. Interestingly, whilst on the surface these subjects are distinct, as we dived deep into each episode, and my guests shared their wonderful insights some common themes began to emerge. These included the pitfalls of throwing money at a challenge without being super clear about where you are going from a strategic perspective.

KEY TAKEAWAY

“Behavioural change is the fundamental piece that is often missing when we articulate where it is we want to go. We fail to spend time thinking about what will be different when we achieve our goal. What will we see, hear, and feel? How will our experience have changed? How will the experience of our team, colleagues, students have changed?”

001 Why Dive Deep with Mel Loizou

002 Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) with Daryll Scott

003 Intercultural Competence with Jo Bloxham

KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we cannot hope to lead others until we can first lead ourselves and that means diving deep into who we are. As human beings we are all beautifully imperfect – there is not a single person on this planet who is perfect no matter what they may tell themselves and that’s ok. We need to all get more comfortable at looking in the mirror (metaphorically that is), celebrating our superpowers and recognising our blind spots. We need to get comfortable with diving deep.”
