Episode 42 - Fly Me to the Moon (2024) Review
Hollywood heavy hitter Greg Berlanti directs, while Scarlett Johansson produces and stars in “Fly Me to the Moon”. Although the movie is set during NASA's Apollo 11 mission, this is far from a historically accurate depiction of how the moon landing was planned. Instead, the film uses the Apollo mission as a creative backdrop to explore broader themes like truth, trust, and conspiracy theories, delivering it in a way that is engaging, charming, and still resonates with questions we grapple with today.
Scarlett Johansson leads the film alongside Channing Tatum, who is having a standout year after playing Gambit in “Deadpool & Wolverine” and starring in Zoe Kravitz’s “Blink Twice”. Their chemistry shines in this funny and lighthearted take on a highly fictionalized version of the Apollo 11 mission. Berlanti effectively utilizes humor while still keeping the focus on the intriguing ideas the film asks us to consider.
Despite facing production challenges, including casting changes and director shifts, the film overcomes these hurdles to deliver a fun and entertaining experience—one of my favorite films of 2024 so far.

Episode 41 - SPOILER Review: Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
The merc with a mouth is back! Putting Deadpool and Wolverine in the same movie has delivered the global summer box office hit we were hoping for (only topped this year by Inside Out 2, another Disney blockbuster). After Marvel’s post-Endgame slump with a few lackluster movies, Director Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman have flipped the genre on its head with this very meta and VERY violent (it’s a Deadpool movie, after all) thrill ride.
Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds previously worked together on Free Guy (2021) and The Adam Project (2022), while Levy and Jackman teamed up back in Real Steel (2011). But this film marks the first time Deadpool and Wolverine are officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) in December 2017.
Stay for the humor (though it can feel a bit repetitive at times and might be an acquired taste), the 20th Century Fox comic movie era nostalgia, and the AWESOME cameos—you won’t be disappointed. IMPORTANT HEADS UP: If you haven’t seen the previous Deadpool movies or aren’t familiar with the MCU, especially the 20th Century Fox era of comic book movies (specifically the X-Men franchise), a lot of this might go over your head. It’s still enjoyable, but you’ll miss out on the moments where the hardcore fans (ME) are cheering at the many references scattered throughout the film. Also yes do stay for the credits and post-credits. Both are great.
This blockbuster has already crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office and is yet another success story for Disney, Levy, Reynolds, and Jackman. Be sure to catch it in theaters before it streams on Disney+.

Episode 40 - Hype Episode: Pig (2021)
In today's brief episode, it’s all about Michael Sarnoski's 2021 overlooked indie feature, Pig. This heartfelt story will surprise you and remind you why Nicolas Cage is a one-of-a-kind actor. Discover why Pig is a standout, featuring one of Cage’s best performances in years. The movie slowly reveals more to us about Cage's enigmatic character and how he has had a profound impact on the people around him. The supporting cast, including Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin, also shines.
Fun fact: Director Michael Sarnoski caught John Krasinski's eye with Pig, leading Krasinski to offer him A Quiet Place: Day One. Sarnoski brings back key collaborators from Pig for his new project, ensuring the same intimate storytelling.
It's unfortunate that this 2021 film didn't receive the support needed to be on the Academy's radar, as Cage’s stellar performance truly warranted a nomination at the very least. Pig stands as a testament to independent filmmaking and exceptional storytelling.

Episode 39 - SPOILER Review: A ‘FURIOSA’ Saga! (2015 and 2024)
Welcome to the deranged world of George Miller’s Mad Max universe. Here we are focusing on the epic and indomitable character, Furiosa! My cousin Ali-Reza Beheshti joins me as we break down and provide spoiler reviews of both “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (2024) - two brilliant action movie achievements!
The Furiosa chapters of the Mad Max franchise kick this storyline into a whole new gear for George Miller fands (and those who are George Miller fans and just don’t know it yet). If the insane, heart-pounding score and nail-biting, relentless hyperkinetic editing style of this movie aren't enough to keep you entertained, the two powerhouse actors who embody the warrior Furiosa will certainly convert you into die-hard fans of this world.

Episode 37 - Spoiler Review: Poor Things (2023)
⚠️ Warning: As said in this episode, "It's not a family-friendly movie. It's not going to be a family-friendly podcast episode." Listener/Viewer Discretion Advised: This episode contains explicit discussions about adult themes and strong language as we delve into the movie 'Poor Things.'
Every year, I go into my Oscar predictions with shaky confidence at best. However, for the 96th Academy Awards for movies from 2023, there was one award for which I had absolute confidence: Best Actress. As soon as I finished watching "Poor Things," there was no doubt in my mind that Stone's performance would not be topped. Stone created a once-in-a-career experience with her portrayal of Bella Baxter in this movie.
On today's episode, I'm joined by my cousin Roya Tavakolian. We had a lot to talk about with this one-of-a-kind movie. From Emma Stone living out what can certainly be imagined as any actor's dream role, to Yorgos Lanthimos navigating us through his world that we see through the eyes of the main character, Bella Baxter. We laugh and joke about parts of this movie, like how Mark Ruffalo is great in his villain (kind of a villain? Not really a villain?) role, and how the movie brilliantly tackles so many themes and ideas in ways that are sometimes subtle and at other times very much in your face.
"Poor Things" is yet another reason why I need to remind myself not to start my "top 10 favorite movies of the year" list too early. It is a standout 2023 movie. It is streaming now on Hulu in the US and is also available for rent and purchase. I can't wait to see more from Lanthimos and Stone soon. Enjoy the movie!

Episode 36 - Review: Ferrari (2023)
After 20 years of trying to get "Ferrari" made (including several actors being attached to the film only to depart shortly after), Mann got his lead cast together with Adam Driver playing Enzo Ferrari (2nd time playing a famous Italian entrepreneur after leading in "House of Gucci") and Penélope Cruz as Laura Ferrari, a standout in this movie. Challenges this movie faced included casting as mentioned, COVID-related production challenges, and challenges with distribution in the States because the original distributor STX Films shut down their distribution and marketing operations, so the film was eventually sold to the distributor Neon for US theatrical release on Christmas Day (awful placement considering other films that would be competing with it around that holiday time).
However, after all of these challenges, this movie shows that Mann has not lost his magic touch at all. He directs a tight, tense, and emotional story about Enzo, Laura, and their legendary company Ferrari. The movie focuses on the year 1957 (just 10 years after the launch of the company). The company is on the verge of bankruptcy and needs to make a big splash if it is to continue. The 1,000-mile race, the Mille Miglia, is the perfect opportunity for Ferrari to win and make said splash. Everything has to go just right. No pressure.
Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz are captivating as the leads. The pacing is perfect. The music by Daniel Pemberton injects the right thrills. Pemberton only had one week to score the movie! He does an incredible job with it. Erik Messerschmidt is the cinematographer who beautifully shoots the movie. He also shot the amazing David Fincher movie "The Killer" that was also released in 2023. For negatives, Shailene Woodley was underutilized in the movie, and that arc was maybe unnecessary. On the other hand, it only seems unnecessary because her character and story seemed rushed and a little underdeveloped, but maybe if it was made as a TV series (watch Mann’s brilliant HBO series "Tokyo Vice") that might be a better format for a longer form story where roles like Woodley’s character could be properly shown.
"Ferrari" is still a very powerful story. It is one of my favorite movies of 2023 and is available to rent and/or purchase on all platforms. Enjoy the movie and thank you for listening.

Episode 35 - SPOILER Review: Oppenheimer (2023)
Two special guests, Papa Hozour and Kathy Garber, join me today to talk about the latest Christopher Nolan epic which seems to be on a clear path to sweep at the upcoming Oscars.
After years of success at Warner Bros, his major minor tantrum over the disaster that was the movie “Tenet” and Warner Bros and its irresponsible rollout, Nolan seems to have found his stride at Universal Pictures taking up this “lower budget” ($100 million) feature and within that budget Universal giving him carte blanche on how to deliver that film. I don’t hide that I don’t exactly see this Director in the best light and yet it is what it is - I absolutely loved the film “Oppenheimer”. Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt (doesn’t get talked about enough for this movie) and so many others that make up this amazing cast. No actor (no matter how big or small their scene is) has their screen time wasted in this film. Ludwig Göransson (Composer), Jennifer Lame (Editor), Hoyte Van Hoytema (Cinematographer), Christopher Nolan (Writer/Producer/Director) - the entire team behind the camera also played key roles in catapulting this movie to being a brilliant epic that has endless rewatchability.

Episode 34 - Hype: Sneakers (1992)
There are so many great movies that came from the 90’s, but “Sneakers” is one that not only stands out but is one that I either return from time to watch again and again or stop and watch some (or all of) whenever I find it playing anywhere.
While I can appreciate dark, twisted espionage thrillers, 'Sneakers' takes a different path. It steers away from what we have more recently been accustomed to with the usual gritty tones for a blend of light-hearted mischief, humor, and suspense, making it a uniquely enjoyable experience.. You have a one of a kind cast with Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, David Strathairn, Donal Logue, Stephen Tobolowsky, Timothy Busfield and more. It kind of (I am reaching here a little bit) feels like the precursor to the Ocean’s 11 reboot with its group of goofy characters facing real threats. This movie is written by the team behind “WarGames” and is directed by the always entertaining Phil Alden Robinson (“Field of Dreams”, “The Sum of All Fears”, and the series “The Good Fight”). The movie’s crown jewel, however, is its music. Composer James Horner, known for 'Avatar', 'Braveheart', and 'Titanic', delivers one of my all-time favorite scores. Everyone behind and in front of the camera brings their A-game to this movie. Yes at times its a little cheesy and feels a little dated, but none of that gets in the way of this movie being pure fun.
The only frustration I have with this movie is its bad title. As you will hear in this episode, there were other great title options that were included in the movie!
Other than that one (but important) frustration this early 90’s hit is one that if you have not seen it that I highly recommend you check out.

Episode 33 - Halloween and SPOILER Review episode : Talk to Me (2023)

IMPORTANT NOTE: This review episode focuses on a horror film and includes topics and scene descriptions and topics that are serious, dark, graphic and disturbing in nature. To be absolutely clear, the discussion in this episode seeks to only make clear these topics were part of the telling of the story of this film.
Additional note: Chris’ movie example was not “The Cave” but rather it was the 2005 movie “The Descent”. Also please disregard the movies I mention as my halloween favorites: 1) “Village of the Damned” from 1995 aged sooooo poorly. Interesting concept but wow going back and looking at it, it’s pretty awful and 2) “Arachnophobia” is an amazing horror movie but (in my opinion alone) it’s not a halloween movie.
Strike update: 1) As of October 29, 2023 we are at 3 and a half months (107 days) into the ongoing strike between SAG-AFTRA (acting union) and the AMPTP (body representing the studios).
Looking for that perfect jump-scare-loaded halloween movie? The feature debut film for YouTube personalities Danny and Michael Philippou, “Talk to Me” serves up just that. This indie Australian horror movie pushes the limits for the horror genre and keeps you guessing up until the very end. The story isn’t without some issues and moments of confusion. What helps for the most part carry the movie is the fact that is a very unique indie horror film. Besides being a movie that really makes you squirm (and yes at times a little bit too much), it is also a very interesting commentary. As mentioned before though some issues in the film persist like understanding why certain things are happening. Certainly we don’t need thorough explanations but what is needed is just enough info so we can care about the people in this story.
Friend of the podcast, Chris Cheng, returns after joining previously to review “Smile” in episode 28. On this episode, we break down this movie and then we shift to going over some of our favorite horror movies.

Episode 32 - SPOILER Review: Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Ratification of the new 3 year deal is expected to happen very soon. 2) As of September 25th, we are almost 2.5 months (73 days) into the ongoing strike between SAG-AFTRA (acting union) and the AMPTP (body representing the studios)
Here we go! This is the movie for 2023 that I was waiting for. I was so amped and ready for this movie by the time it was released. It did not disappoint. Today’s episode is a spoiler review episode for the summer blockbuster “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One”. Ethan Hunt and the IMF are back for this latest chapter.
I have said it before and I will say it again, Director Christopher McQuarrie is the reason why I get so excited for the Mission Impossible movies. He has been actively involved going back to the 4th movie, “Ghost Protocol”. McQuarrie and Cruise make a fantastic creative team. This 7th installment of the franchise has a ridiculous (in a good way) cast - Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell (awesome addition), Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales (Ozark), Cary Elwes, Henry Czerny (Kittridge is back!) - I mean come on! Amazing cast. In typical mission fashion there are amazing stunts, fantastic locations and another thrill-delivering soundtrack by returning Composer Lorne Balfe. The movie is a ride and engages you by making you care with a pretty good emotional story too like with the 6th movie, “Fallout”.
“Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One” is available for digital purchase (and hopefully to rent too) on October 10th. In the podcast episode I mentioned to skip renting and just move on to buying it (Paramount is not paying me). That’s how enthusiastic I am for this movie.

Episode 30 - The US film strikes of 2023

We have 2 major strikes that are ongoing within the American film industry: 1) the SAG-AFTRA strike that started on May 2, 2023 and 2) the WGA strike that launched this month on July 14, 2023.
I go over how this podcast is going to proceed while the strikes are ongoing and I respond to a particular argument that has been voiced repeatedly since these strikes began.
Until the strikes end, I will not be posting any content (trailers, reviews, articles, etc.) that discuss/mention anything (includes past, current, and upcoming movies and shows) by the struck companies (members of the AMPTP). Members of the AMPTP include (but are not limited only to): Netflix, Amazon/MGM, Apple/Apple TV+, Warner Bros Discovery/HBO/MAX, Disney/Disney+/ABC/Hulu, Comcast/NBC/Universal/Peacock, Paramount/CBS/Paramount+, Sony, Lionsgate). My understanding is that movies and shows that are produced AND distributed by non-AMPTP members (such companies like A24, Bleecker Street, and NEON) are acceptable to discuss and post about. Content going forward will be about films and shows by these non-AMPTP members and will be about other topics that relate to the entertainment industry that are both outside of the AMPTP and observe the spirit of the strikes.

Episode 29 - Review: Air (2022)
Ben Affleck is a truly gifted Director and he lets that talent shine again in the drama “Air”. Here Nike is in a very different position then how we know them today. Competition is crushing from all sides. Converse and Adidas are the Goliaths to Nike’s David. Alex Convery writes an amazing debut script (a black list script) and unofficially Affleck and Damon contributed to the script too making this their 3rd time writing together (“Good Will Hunting” from 1997 and “The Last Duel” from 2021 available to rent now and a must see too). It’s the first time also that Ben Affleck directs Matt Damon as Nike’s Sonny Vaccaro. This movie is also the first film produced by Affleck and Damon under their new “Artists Equity” production company. The movie is beautifully shot by Robert Richardson (Kill Bill movies) and I wish I could say well-scored too but therein lies one problem - what score? Overall this a truly fantastic movie where you feel what is at stake for these characters played by a wonderfully stacked cast: Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Viola Davis (for sure will be busy come awards season), Jason Bateman, Chris Tucker, Chris Messina, and Marlon Wayans. One of my only other gripes with this fantastic movie is that this crowd-pleaser of a film had such a short time theatrical run (April 5 to May 12) before launching on Prime Video. On a positive note though, now all Prime and or Prime Video subscribers will have this movie available to stream. Also pretty soon Amazon will enable non-subscribing customers to rent and or buy copies of movies (such as “Air”) made by them (via MGM) too through their newly launched business unit Amazon MGM Studios Distribution. “Air” is a kind of movie that is hardly made any more. For that reason (and many more), this is one not to miss!

Episode 28 - SPOILER review: Smile (2022)

I don’t know when was the last time that I had a horror movie stay with me like this one. “Smile” was released in September of 2022. What a clever take on a horror story. In this movie we have our main character, Rose (played fantastically by Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick’s daughter, Sosie Bacon) who after witnessing something terrible starts to believe that something is after her. It might seem like your typical horror movie (at times it might seem like oh yeah I have seen this before in other horror movies) but overall it is the execution of this movie and the utilization of trauma which makes it truly something unique. This is Director Parker Finn’s (Chapman University Class of 2011 Screenwriting MFA WOOHOO!) feature film debut. What a hell of a debut! $200+ million worldwide box office on a ~$17 million budget - the movie earns every penny of it. Awesome job, Parker! Also you need to check out the brilliant (and absolutely creepy) guerrilla marketing that was deployed for this movie during the 2022 World Series (just do a youtube search for “Smile Movie (Guerrilla Marketing) TikTok Ad” - haha so freaky and yet genius to help this movie). This movie is truly a one of a kind horror story experience that you have to check out.

Episode 27 - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023 film)

I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy the film adaptation of “Dungeons & Dragons” (full movie title “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves). I went into the film knowing very little about the world of DnD other than it has been around for many years and has a very enthusiastic following. Then the reviews for this film came out after it’s premiere at the South by Southwest festival. The result is one of those great experiences where expectations are low and then the reviews come out saying it is one of the most entertaining films of the year. That piqued my curiosity and I went to check this one out in the theaters. You know you have a smashing hit when the die-hards, the uninitiated, and the critics all are shouting their praises for a movie. “Honor Among Thieves” is definitely one of these movies. It was a big sigh of relief for me because with few recent exceptions (“The Last of Us”, “The Witcher”, “Halo”, “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, “Angry Birds 2) there have unfortunately been so many bad game adaptations (the cult-classically awful 1993 “Super Mario Bros.” with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, the 2005 film “Doom” and every adaptation of “Resident Evil” to date). This film is just right at just over 2 hours in running time (2 hours and 15 minutes). Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez are fantastic in this movie. They bring a great balance of action and comedy to the film. Regé-Jean Page also has some pretty great scenes and laughs in the movie too. The team behind the camera includes writers and directors from movies like “Game Night” (funny movie if you haven’t checked it out - Jesse Plemons steals the show) and “Vacation” so you know you are in for a good time with this one. The movie also has an expected cameo in it. Questions I have from this movie: is a strong fan-base for a globally enjoyed game and A-list of talent in front and behind the camera enough to make this movie a hit? Also will Chris Pine be able to break free of his curse of movies that are made with Paramount Pictures (Paramount made this DnD movie) ? I love this studio and all the characters and stories that they have created but for some reason even though he has had success with work at other studios, Paramount and Chris Pine have never had a successful (box office success) film together. Paramount is a great studio and Pine is an entertaining actor. This curse that they have when working together needs to end.

Episode 26 - Review: Creed III (2023 film)
Are you ready for one of the best directorial debuts of 2023? That’s what you get with the Michael B. Jordan helmed movie “Creed III”. I went into this movie with doubts: I was not sure of Jordan as a Director. Sylvester Stallone was not involved with this movie at all due to falling out with Producer Irwin Winkler. I was not sure about Jonathan Majors after the disappointment of “Ant-Man: Quantumania”. “The Book of Bobba Fett” composer (not a great soundtrack) Joseph Shirley was scoring this movie instead of Ludwig Goransson (Black Panther, Creed and Creed II, The Mandalorian, Tenet). I was wrong to worry about any of these parts. This movie fires on all cylinders. Jordan is back as Adonis Creed. It is a movie that is up there in quality with the first Creed (and the first Rocky movie too) in that it is not really a boxing movie. Don’t get me wrong the action (with some innovative anime-inspired moments) is phenomenal but the movie is a drama first. Jordan and the entire Creed III team really surprised me. My takeaway is for me to try better to remember that past work and performances are not an indication at all of what people can do in the future for better and for worse. Jonathan Majors, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Wood Harris and Mila Davis-Kent are all so great and each have their moments to shine in this movie. Creed’s daughter, Amara is deaf and the way this movie develops her character is really well-executed, thoughtful and wonderfully inclusive. Also now that Amazon owns MGM it is exciting to see where this franchise will go as the Creed-verse continues to unfold.

I know I have been talking a lot recently about Rian Johnson ("Glass Onion", "Knives Out") and his work a lot lately. What can I say - I am fan of his style of storytelling and definitely his sense of humor too. Natasha Lyonne (Netflix series “Russian Doll”) and Johnson have developed a whodunnit mystery series which is both unique and yet also a play/throwback to so many great mystery/detective series like “Columbo”, “Murder She Wrote” and more. From the moment this series starts it becomes very clear that only Natasha Lyonne could steer this series in the lead role. She brings so much fun as well as her own unique energy to this role. Look out for a lot of great cameos in this new series. This first season of “Poker Face” consists of 10 episodes and the first 4 episodes are available to watch now on Peacock. The remaining episodes will be go up on Peacock weekly on Thursdays. Rating: 9 out of 10. This is one not to miss. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Episode 22 - SPOILER Review: Avatar - The Way of Water (2022 film)
James Cameron is a bit of a madman but it’s hard to argue with the fact that he knows how to entertain an audience. Today’s SPOILER review episode is about a film that was 13 years in the making. On this episode, I'm joined by my friend and filmmaker, Jonathan Olivo, as we dive into James Cameron's highly anticipated film 'Avatar: The Way of Water'. Also a special shout out to my friend Cody who reminds us how “Avatar: The Way of Water” from 2022 uses very similar (if not identical) story beats from “Avatar” from 2009. We spend half the time of the episode sharing our thoughts on what we did and didn't like about the sequel as well as discussing other film tangents too. Thank you Jonathan and Cody to your contributions to this episode. It is strongly recommended that you see this film on the biggest theater screen with the best sound (Dolby Atmos or IMAX) and in 3D. A one of a kind movie like this is absolutely worth it!

Episode 22 - Review: Glass Onion (2022 film)
Rian Johnson knows how to put on a show. He does it again with “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”. In this mystery, Johnson brings back Investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) to resolve another puzzle. This movie had some big shoes to fill. “Knives Out” (2019) is a timeless classic that continues to age well and to this day I notice new things when I continue to rewatch that movie. What I love about Glass Onion is that its a completely new mystery with, besides Mr. Blanc, a whole new cast of characters. This film is very different from the 2019 movie but similar in that it makes fun of today’s culture and the fantastic actors also portray a hysterical group of modern-day a-holes. Big shout out to Daniel Craig, Edward Norton and especially Janelle Monáe for her stealing every scene of this movie that she is in. Composer and frequent Rian Johnson collaborator Nathan Johnson is back to score this movie and does an excellent job. What is so great with this movie is that it is not predictable. The trailers do not spoil anything and the movie will keep you guessing right up until the end. “Glass Onion” can be streamed on Netflix starting December 23rd. Netflix, you gotta bring this one back to the theaters. It’s a hell of a ride that is without doubt worth the price of admission.

Episode 21 - Review: Prey (2022 film)
This one breaks the curse of bad movies debuting in the month of August. The spirit of “Predator” Director John McTiernan is alive and well in the 2022 installment of this franchise, “Prey”. This latest entry may be the best in the franchise. Amber Midthunder commands the screen as our hero, Naru, in this very efficient action movie. “10 Cloverfield Lane” fans will be happy to know that Director Dan Trachtenberg hasn’t lost his creative touch with his follow up movie to the Cloverfield sequel. Sarah Schachner is a Composer to look out for. She has led one of the best scores that I have enjoyed so far for 2022. Threading the needle of respecting an original concept while having a new movie be memorable and stand out on its own is no easy task. “Prey” makes it look easy. Be sure to not miss this one and check it out now on Hulu.

Episode 20 - Review: The Black Phone (2022 film)
It’s been a minute but we are back for the 20th episode! WOOHOO! Today, Katie and I discuss Scott Derrickson’s (“Sinister”, “Doctor Strange”) new coming-of-age horror film, “The Black Phone”. This film is led by fantastic actors Mason Thames as Finney and the show-stealer Madeleine McGraw who does an awesome job playing Finney’s sister, Gwen. The film is also adapted from a short by Stephen King's son, Joe Hill and is produced by horror pro, Jason Blum. Of course a horror movie is nothing without its creepy villain and any time you have Ethan Hawke (reuniting with Director Derrickson again after working on “Sinister” together) playing a villain you know you are in for something special. He does not disappoint Now we have some very different takes on this movie so get settled in and get ready to dig into a very different type of horror movie.

Episode 19 - Review: The Gray Man (2022 Netflix film)
A throwback to late 90’s/early 2000’s action movies, Netflix’s upcoming action movie “The Gray” delivers on your action movie needs. Very few filmmakers live/eat/breathe action movies like the Russo brothers (“Captain America: Winter Soldier”, “Captain America: Civil War”, “Avengers: Infinity Wars”, “Avengers: Endgame”). This movie is one the largest movies by Netflix yet. It is huge in scale and has a hell of a cast with Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Billy Bob Thorton, Alfre Woodard, Shea Whigham and Dhanush. There are so many incredible action set pieces in this blockbuster film. “The Gray Man” is a very light and very thin action movie. It is a fun first installment of what is sure to be an exciting franchise that has a lot of potential to continue evolving in a similar fashion to “Mission Impossible”. You can check out “The Gray Man” on Netflix on Thursday July 22nd and (if you are in the States) in theaters too.

Episode 18 - Review: Elvis (2022 film)
After a decade of being off the film scene, Director Baz Luhrmann (“Moulin Rouge”, “The Great Gatsby”) is back behind the camera with this biopic about The King - Mr. Elvis Presley. I am also really excited because on this episode I have a guest and my good friend Katie Basso on the podcast to discuss the latest film with me. After seeing this film last week, we had a lot of thoughts on this biopic that we wanted to share. Austin Butler is a force in this film as Elvis. Look out for his name come awards season. There is nothing nothing nothing like the visual, editing and directing style of a Luhrmann film. Seeing this film in the movie theater is A MUST! Tom Hanks also shines as Elvis’ questionably shady Manager Colonel Parker. With “Elvis” Luhrmann re-introduces audiences to his “red velvet curtain” appeal/style of story-telling. After seeing this film also be sure to rent his other classics including “Strictly Ballroom” and as previously mentioned his best work “Moulin Rouge”.

Episode 16 - Mid-Season Review: The Old Man (2022 Hulu series)
Nothing can keep the new Hulu spy series, “The Old Man” down. Not a global pandemic. Not a separate health scare for lead actor Jeff Bridges. Nothing. Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow bring Thomas Perry’s 2017 spy novel to life in this adaptation. Jon Watts (Director of the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies) produces and brilliantly directs the first 2 episodes of this series. Bridges and Lithgow are made for roles like these. This thriller works because it’s not predictable and the story slowly untangles as we start to understand what motivates our 2 lead characters and why they are trying to keep their past work buried. Nothing is what it seems. We are given hints about what is happening but even you don’t really know what’s going on until it happens. The series also echoes just one part of John Wick 3 with 2 Rottweilers whom are also badasses in this show. Don’t miss this one!
