“And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?” Mark 4:40
This morning we finished our studies in the book of Jonah with the pupils in Kilskeery. Having shared with you the messages, I trust that you have profited from the studies.
We have arrived at the penultimate study in the book of Jonah.
I trust that you have been refreshed and blessed by what has been set forth in the studies and that you have remembered in prayer the children as they listen to the truth of God.
Jonah 4:1-4 We continue our study as to why Jonah was displeased by the wonderful mercy the Lord showed to the Ninevites.
Jonah 4:1-3
We come to the heart of the record of Jonah’s mission to Nineveh and his running away from his commission. Having just witnessed one of the greatest displays of mercy and grace known amongst men and having his preaching owned by God in a signal manner, Jonah is angry and vexed with the outcome of his visit to Nineveh!
Jonah 3:5-10
THE RESPONSE OF GOD TO NINEVEH’S REPENTANCE
“And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not,” Jonah 3:10.
Here is this morning’s message to the boys and girls in Kilskeery Christian School. It follows on from our last study and centres upon the chapter 3 verses 5-10.
We also paid a brief but sincere tribute to Mr Bobbie Edwards, a founder member of Kilskeery FPC who went to be with the Lord last Lord’s Day and whose funeral is taking place today.
Jonah 3:5-10 We begin a new school year and return to the story of Jonah. What a wonderful time of soul-winning resulted from the preaching of Jonah in Nineveh. The people of the city repented and their number was in the 100,000s since there were some 120,000 children alone.

JONAH’S REFLECTIONS Jonah’s thoughts in the wake of his backsliding are recorded here.
Jonah 2:1-10.
We will continue our study of the remarkable contents of chapter 2. Chastening by the lord promotes holiness.
There is an article in the ‘Belfast Telegraph’ of June 11th, entitled:

Our subject has a great lesson for boys and girls - Chastening. “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?” Hebrews 12:6-7.

Jonah 1:14-17. MAN’S NATURAL RELUCTANCE TO KILL The sailors were reluctant cast Jonah overboard, verse 13. This seems to me but another evidence of the grace of God in their hearts.
Jonah 1:14-17. “Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee. So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows. Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”
Jonah 1:7-10. Jonah was to this ship and its crew as Achan was to Israel. Beware of sin! It will turn the man of God and the messenger of the truth into a harbinger of ill and a stumbling block to all!
“And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah,” Jonah 1:7.

“But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that [were] in the ship into the sea, to lighten [it] of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.” Jonah 1:4-5

Jonah 1:1-3. We move on from our study on Tuesday when we were studying the folly of Jonah when he disobeyed the Lord thinking His will was wrong.
Jonah 1:3. It is clear that Jonah, without deliberation or hesitation, disobeyed God and refused to comply with His command. This is a response unique in the record of the Bible. It is true that there are many occasions of unfaithfulness amongst God’s servants recorded but no act of disobedience was committed with such directness and defiance. Jonah did not reluctantly undertake his duty or half-heartedly comply. No! he utterly refused! Jonah sought to withdraw from that place with which the Lord’s presence was associated, like Adam of old, Genesis 3:8.
2 Kings 14:25. “In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria, and reigned forty and one years. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. He restored the coast of Israel from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of Gathhepher.” Gathhepher was a city in Galilee. This is the only other reference to Jonah in the Old Testament. It shows that he preached some 860 years before the Saviour’s birth at approximately the same time as Elisha the prophet.
