We’re excited to drop in your feed today to tell you about a new Lemonada Media series called The Pink House with Sam Smith. Hosted by five-time Grammy winner Sam Smith, The Pink House is about the people and places that make us who we are. It was a space of total warmth and love where Sam felt safe enough to find their voice. Each week, join Sam in conversation with icons and friends like Trixie Mattel, Gloria Estefan, Elliot Page, Joel Kim Booster, Ben Platt, Rebecca Sugar and Michelle Visage as they explore their own “Pink Houses” and how they navigated early struggles and ultimately found their place in the world.

We are dropping in your feed today to share a new series that we know you will enjoy. Pack One Bag is epic true story of an Italian family, split apart by love, fascism and war. Through shocking discoveries - and Stanley Tucci’s artistry - an enthralling personal history comes to life.
When documentarian David Modigliani was a kid, his grandfather, Franco, won the Nobel Prize. But, David’s always been more fascinated by the love story that made it possible -- his grandparents' romance on the run from Fascist Italy. When he digs into their story, he uncovers a darker side to their fairytale escape: a brother left behind to face the Nazi occupation - and startling personal connections between his family and Benito Mussolini. In the Tribeca-winning podcast, PACK ONE BAG, he returns to Italy to investigate his family's past, carrying a pressing question: if Fascism takes over your country, do you stay, or do you try to flee? And what happens if you can’t?
You’re about to hear a preview of the first episode of Pack One Bag. After you listen, head to https://lemonada.lnk.to/packonebagfd to hear more.

Through these conversations, he hopes listeners can learn how to embrace the opportunity of failure and fail better together.
You’re about to hear a preview of the first episode of Fail Better, where David catches up with Ben Stiller. Believe it or not, Ben Stiller has failed. (Remember Zoolander 2? He’d probably rather you didn’t.) As it turns out, Ben has had his share of flops, and he chats with David about those times in his life and how they sometimes led to something better.

We met Lauren back in season 1, where she walked us through the nitty-gritty of how much it costs to operate a child care center. This time around, Lauren tears up as she talks about how nationwide labor shortages are reverberating through the child care system, what she has to do to keep the lights on at Ellis, and how the ongoing pandemic has made a bad situation continue to get worse.

The team at In Recovery wanted to share with you a preview of another Lemonada Media series that they know you’ll want to tune in for. The 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education paved the way for racial integration in public schools. But there's an unspoken consequence of this historic moment. Estimates show 38 thousand Black teachers were fired throughout the integration. This means, the number of Black educators in our public schools dramatically decreased during this time. And that number has never gone back up. This has left a huge void in our public schools. That’s why it’s so important we uplift Black leaders working in education today. After 1954, a new podcast from Lemonada Media hosted by Aimée Eubanks Davis, is out now wherever you get your podcasts.

Opioids are killing more people than ever. In 2020, overdose deaths in the U.S. spiked nearly 30% to a record high -- the sharpest annual increase in 30 years. Fentanyl sold on the street and the ongoing toll of the pandemic are the primary drivers. With so many of us affected, there’s a dire need for solutions. That’s why we’re re-releasing episodes 2-12 from season one with new updates from previous guests and fans of the show. Last Day Revisited: The Opioid Crisis is a binge listen that offers essential knowledge, support, and answers for people directly impacted by addiction. PLUS, we reveal what topic we’ll be covering in Last Day Season 3, dropping early 2022. Together, we can reduce stigma and save lives. On Last Day, we talk about what’s killing us, the stuff that’s hard to comprehend and getting worse every day. Join host Stephanie Wittels Wachs, as she confronts massive epidemics with humanity, wit, and a quest for progress. While Season 1 chronicled the opioid crisis in the US, Season 2 delves into the growing suicide rate, telling real stories, talking to experts, and asking everyone along the way, "How did we get here, and what could we have done differently?"
On the 2-year anniversary of Stefano’s death, and his family is still asking: “How did this happen?” For most families dealing with addiction, treatment can feel like a Rubik’s cube. What works? What doesn’t? Are there Yelp reviews? On this episode, Stephanie talks to David Sheff, New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction, about the morass of confusion that is the rehab industry and Dr. Nzinga A. Harrison about the importance--and effectiveness--of treating the whole person.

Not guilty for reason of insanity is a full acquittal of criminal charges. Does that mean it’s a get out of jail free card? Turns out it's much more complicated. During a small retreat, six people in recovery discovered the way their childhood trauma played a part in the addictions they had. The retreat and the histories of each of the participants were part of the documentary Uprooting Addiction. This week, Nzinga sits down with two of the creators of the film, social worker and addiction specialist Hope Payson, and filmmaker Tory Jadow. The three talk about the way childhood trauma is often overlooked as a risk for addiction, and the ways those who’ve experienced trauma can survive and eventually thrive.

What started out as chronic pain for David Smith’s father, ended in a fatal opioid overdose. In the years that followed, David lost a brother and sister to opioids. Like so many families, David feels like the healthcare system failed his family. He tells Nzinga how he feared he would become his Dad one day. The two talk about intergenerational trauma, David’s fatherhood journey, and how we can redefine healthcare to actually prevent sickness instead of waiting to treat it.

Representative Leslie Herod knows what it's like to have a family member struggle with addiction and incarceration. But she also knows that this is more a failure of a greater system than a failure of a sibling, and that’s informed the policy and programs she’s spearheaded around mental health, substance misuse, and the criminal justice system. Nzinga and Representative Herod talk about how current systems of policing and treating substance misuse not only bypass treating mental health, but often make it worse. Luckily, Representative Herod has a program in Denver, Colorado that has actually worked.

Georgia Hardstark quit meth on her own when she was 14 years old. Today, she thinks about this youthful willpower in her moments of self doubt, which she still has despite her huge success as one of the hosts of the hit comedy-true crime podcast My Favorite Murder. Georgia talks to Nzinga about the childhood factors that lead her to meth, her early recovery journey, and what she’s noticed since she started a new path of recovery -- quitting drinking one month ago.

The intersection between addiction and the holidays can be challenging. Even more so when you add a global pandemic into the mix. So Nzinga is ending Season 1 of In Recovery by answering listener questions. We hear from a woman who is worried about the toxic environment that will come with her wife’s return from rehab, even if her drinking won’t. Another listener asks about how to cope with so much loss and grief in isolation, and a third wants to know how to handle the guilt trip she gets when she tries to set boundaries.

Alicia called in about her husband's gambling and asked one of the more common questions about uncommon addictions –– is he in denial or am I overreacting? When it comes to the more subtle or nuanced addictions, it can be easy to second guess our concern or convince someone they are overreacting. Which is exactly what happened for Alicia. So, Nzinga helps her answer this question and gives her tools to talk to her husband about gambling.

Air proudly identifies as a Black woman in long term recovery. Today, that’s a source of strength, but that wasn’t always the case -- she says she felt uncomfortable in her skin since the day she was born. In an intimate and vulnerable conservation with Nzinga, Air shares how she’s learned to take the moments of discomfort and uncertainty and use them to connect with herself, her community, and her identity. It is in these harder moments that Air finds the most beauty and pride in her life.

As we get ready to gather, in person or virtually, for one of our country’s more complicated holidays, we return to an episode about racism in the United States. Nzinga takes the opportunity to talk about how racism biologically and psychologically impacts our black and brown communities. Yes, this kind of chronic trauma leads to increased substance use disorders. But even more so, this episode explores how racism itself is the addiction of America.

Overdose deaths from methamphetamine use have been surging in the US, not unlike opioids. But meth isn’t talked about as much. In this episode, Nzinga brings on Eleanor Health Clinic Manager Jack Register to talk about why meth has been prominent in certain communities and why there is less publicity over the rise in numbers. Plus, Nzinga lays the groundwork on how meth impacts our brains, behaviors, and bodies.

Lately, it seems like we are looking for answers everywhere about everything. Luckily, Nzinga is here to answer more listener questions about all things addiction. One man wants to know how he and his partner can find healthier coping mechanisms, especially in the wake of election stress. Another woman asks how she can use her own addiction experience as a cautionary tale for her 11-year-old brother who’s fascinated with drugs. And, a pharmacist is looking for resources she can provide for clients who may be facing addiction. Nzinga answers these questions, and a range of others, in the second “Ask Me Anything” episode.

When Sergio started vaping, it didn’t seem like a big deal. After all, he was surrounded by people vaping and drinking at school. But lately, this casual habit feels a lot like an addiction, and he’s not sure how to stop. This week, Sergio and Nzinga talk about what makes vaping so addictive, what to do when you feel like a party pooper, and how to stop spending the equivalent of 6 Chipotle Burrito Bowls a week on cartridges.

Nzinga often talks about how we’re all addicted to something. For Nora McInerny, host of the podcast, Terrible Thanks For Asking, it’s reading the negative things strangers say about her online. Whether it’s the comments section, Amazon reviews, or the depths of Reddit, Nora seeks it out. So Nzinga and Nora talk about the root cause, the benefits, and how Nora can find what she’s looking for elsewhere.

We open Season 2 of Last Day with a tale of two Kevins. One is Sergeant Kevin Briggs, also known as the guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge. The other is Kevin Berthia, an Oakland native who drove to that bridge on March 11, 2005 with the intent of ending his life. This week, we tell the larger story behind a moment of intervention—what led up to it and what happened in the 15 years since. We’re also joined by Courtney Knowles, our advisor at the Jed Foundation (a nonprofit devoted to emotional health and suicide prevention), who’s here to poke holes in our narrative.

Another woman asks if she's addicted to toxic relationships and emotional uproar. And what is the best way a daughter can get her 77 year old mother into a treatment program during COVID? It’s (still) a global pandemic, and we are (still) doing a lot of things alone. In this episode, Nzinga talks about how recovery doesn’t have to be one of them. Even for Evan, a 22 year old who knows that his partner and family will be devastated if they find out, and feels like treatment options are out of the picture while he’s on his parents' insurance. In this episode, Evan and Nzinga talk one on one about the ways Evan can get out of solitude and find the support he’s been looking for for years.

In a single state, let’s say California, you can walk into a dispensary and buy weed legally while down the block your neighbor is still in prison for a weed possession charge from a decade ago. Weed, like most topics we talk about on this show, is complicated. One caller wants to know if something can even be addictive if there is no physical withdrawal, while another wants to know how to set boundaries for her daughters who are smoking weed daily and don’t think it’s an issue. In this episode, Nzinga uses weed to break down what she means when she says addiction is continued behavior despite negative consequences.

In 2011, Gary Mendell's 25 yr old son, Brian, died by suicide after struggling with addiction for a decade. As Gary was supporting Brian through his recovery, remission, and relapses, he realized that, unlike other diseases, there was no real place to go for help. No huge foundation funding research. No 5k’s. So in the wake of Brian’s death, Gary created it himself. This week, Nzinga talks to Gary about the formation of Shatterproof, ATLAS (a treatment locator, assessment, and standards platform), and the immense importance of providing evidence-based education, resources, and treatment options.

It can be hard to get a teenager to talk about anything, period. So when it comes to talking to teens about drugs and addiction? Yikes. River, a teacher, wants to know how to talk to her students about addiction, without stigmatizing people who have addictions. And Suzanne, who works in a treatment center and has two teenage sons of her own, is curious why no one talks about difficult emotions and coping mechanisms as addiction prevention. So this week, Nzinga tells us how she talked to her own kids, and she and Claire do another role play.

When someone in your family is dealing with an addiction disorder, it’s hard not to feel every painful emotion all at once -- anger, guilt, rage, sadness, helplessness. Today we hear from a father who is trying to get his son to accept therapy and a mom who is at the end of her rope trying to break the cycle of her daughter’s alcoholism. So, what can a family do? This week, Nzinga answers questions about how to help those in your family and how to help yourself.

Something happens when you’re under a tight deadline, or serving during the dinner rush, or studying for a big exam. Your thoughts and emotions quiet down, and before you know it, hours have passed. The distraction that work, errands, to-do lists, and projects provide can be such a respite for our busy brains. We use it like a drug to resolve discomfort. So, this week Nzinga dives into the reasons so many of us can’t stop working and helps listeners identify whether or not they have a work addiction.

As people gather to protest the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmed Arbery and so many Black people before them, Nzinga takes the opportunity to talk about how racism biologically and psychologically impacts our black and brown communities. Yes, this kind of chronic trauma leads to increased substance use disorders. But even more so, this episode explores how racism itself is the addiction of America.

Stress and anxiety are at an all-time high, and for many of us, nothing is more soothing than a warm chocolate chip cookie or a fresh loaf of sourdough bread. But why is that? Today, Nzinga answers questions about our complicated relationships with food, especially during a pandemic.

Cindy is a mother of three who was using opioids during each of her pregnancies. She knew it wasn’t healthy for the babies, but she didn’t know how to safely stop. Fearing the doctors would notify authorities, Cindy was afraid to ask for help. Then one day, she made a call to a hotline. This led her to a doctor who gave her the support she needed, and now Cindy is in recovery and wants to share her story. Nzinga goes over some of the options available to pregnant women who are using and gives Cindy a call to check-in. She also shares a bit about how the pandemic has impacted recovery options--both the good and the bad.
