Russia, the world's largest country, remains a key player in global politics. This collection examines Russia's past, present and future: from its role as the dominant constituent republic in the Soviet Union, to its current status as an authoritarian, energy-exporting giant with no clear ideological commitments. Also examined are Russia's relationship to its erstwhile republics in the Soviet Union, and those states' difficult transitions to democracy.
