We’ve always been taught that power corrupts. But lots of people have power and aren’t corrupt. What corrupts is pressure.

When you’re given responsibility for managing other people, often there aren’t resources to help you manage yourself. And the pressure that any new or even seasoned manager can feel in their role can be crippling.

Sabina Nawaz discovered this firsthand in her executive leadership role at Microsoft. She recounts a harrowing return from maternity leave that left her scrambling to prepare the CEO, and along the way, she found herself becoming a person she didn’t recognize.

In her new book You’re the Boss: Become the Manager You Want to Be (and Others Need), Sabina shares an evidence-based framework for managing pressure and power with grace and intelligence, with actionable tips to help you succeed.

During the pandemic, the way we work fundamentally changed. And yet, now we see many businesses trying to reclaim the world as we knew it before, demanding employees return to the office and attempting to put the genie back in the bottle.

Rishad Tobaccowala knows better. Through his weekly thought letter The Future Does Not Fit In the Containers of the Past, he offers insights and advice on how to prepare yourself for a career that accounts for new relevance, shifts in thinking, and more independence.

His new book Rethinking Work examines why we need to reassess what we know, the ways to reconsider how we work, and offers advice for leaders and companies on how to prepare for what’s ahead.

I tend to focus on other people in the interviews on Timeless Leadership. That’s important! There are so many things to learn from other people.

But I’ve realized that being a leader isn’t only about lifting other people up, it’s about being a teacher and sharing your own insights as well.

So in this episode, you get a little bit more of me than I typically put out there, as I share an episode from the frankly… podcast from Franco.

It’s an important discussion that covers the background behind why I do what I do, and what I believe — including my advice to my 21-year-old self.

I’d be interested to hear your feedback about it.

There are certain instances in life when we take our responsibilities so seriously that we swear an oath.

Where did this tradition come from? Who do we owe it to? And why are oaths necessary, anyway?

The second in command in any job gets neither the attention nor the respect that the chief does.

By virtue of their timing, the founders and those who came first tend to command the spotlight.

And yet, those who follow them do more than continue a legacy; they need to forge their own path and determine how to create something sustainable.

Lindsay M. Chervinsky, in her new book Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents that Forged the Republic, makes the case that without John Adams’ wisdom and good judgment, America as we know it might not have survived.

Telling stories is a form of love.

As Neal Foard shared in this episode,

“It helps when a leader is able to communicate to the people that work for them, that they care about them. This is the power of stories. I don’t have to literally say to you I care about you…because of the stories I choose to tell, I am the type of person that cares about the fate of others.”

Neal ignites the storytelling ability in others with his course, Storyfire. But more than his course, Neal’s take on storytelling and leadership is a way of life. It’s a way of being.

Come for the stories, stay for Neal’s three simple rules for living (I won’t spoil it for you in the notes here), and sign up to get bonus content with additional (and hilarious!) stories from Neal.

Being insatiable learners, leaders also become teachers of others, passing down the traits and skills to help the next generation of leaders achieve their potential.

But it all starts with committing to learning more, every day. In this episode, we’ll identify nine characteristics of lifelong learners, ask you questions about five facets of the agile learner, and leave you with four tips to help you on a journey of lifelong learning.

This wraps up Season 4. I’ll be back with some changes in Season 5 — you won’t want to miss it.

Leadership requires care. Care that extends to the people around you, for whom leaders are responsible. But also care for the practice of leadership itself.

Ideas about this extend back to Plato, who engaged in many conversations about the responsibilities of leaders, the dangers of too much power, and considering the good of others.

Princeton professor Melissa Lane, whose book Of Rule and Office: Plato’s Ideas of the Political, joins us to explore the impact of Plato's ideas today, as we struggle with concepts of accountability and servant leadership.

Life is filled with busyness. When something or someone comes along to smooth the way and make life a little easier, we’re more than willing to give them our attention and our money.

In an attention-starved world, we look for people who make it easier for us to consume information and make decisions.

Pay attention to these curators. They care.

Often in our careers, we’re focused on our destinations — the job title, the salary, the external symbols that notch our success, and the associated reputational wealth in the eyes of those who see us.

We’re fixated on being when we should be intent on becoming. What are we doing, enjoying, and sharing that inform who we are?

Whether it’s personal or professional, learning is the key to our growth. And in this episode, there’s a short letter I reread to help remind me about the power of growth.

This is the second in our four-part series on core leadership skills.

In 1831 Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote “It is a luxury to be understood,” and it is still a luxury in the modern day. Perhaps even more so, given the number of modes of communication and fractured attention.

Communication is at the very core of your leadership. Without it, you have nothing. Which is why working on your communication skills is so important.

Dr. Marshall Goldsmith has worked with hundreds of very high achievers throughout his career as an executive coach. And in doing so, he noticed something: happiness does not come from achievement.

So he wrote his latest book, The Earned Life, to address that. It will start you on a fresh journey that goes beyond your last achievement and helps you minimize your regrets, allowing you to live the life you were meant to live.

We are living an earned life when the choices, risks, and effort we make in each moment align with an overarching purpose in our lives, regardless of the eventual outcome.

Join us as we embark on a four-part series on core leadership skills.

Inscribed on the Temple of Apollo in the 5th century B.C., the phrase “Know thyself” is considered a universal truth. So it’s appropriate that the first leadership skill we’re exploring is self-awareness.

Too many leaders are tone-deaf or ego-driven to be self-aware. And yet, it’s probably the single most important leadership skill, as it makes it possible for other skills to grow.

There are many resources out there for self-employed business owners. But when it comes to Jeffrey Shaw’s approach, it’s resonant with Timeless Leadership.

Jeffrey’s book The Self-Employed Life: Business and Personal Development Strategies That Create Sustainable Success helps business owners focus on the values that are important to them and develop their own ecosystem for success.

Built on the idea that your level of success rarely exceeds your level of personal development, it provides a three-part formula to make lasting change: personal development, business strategies, and daily habits.

When we’re busy with [waves hands around] life, we can miss out on things that are essential for us to see. Or not see, as the case may be.

Who we are is reflected in how we show up (or don’t) and what we choose to say (or not). Those things that aren’t seen can send some of the most powerful messages.

And we can learn a lot about other people by paying attention to those details.

Leaders, by their very nature, tend to see things differently than other people. One of the terms we’re hearing more about, particularly in the workplace, is neurodiversity.

And Peter Shankman is helping companies understand what that means and how they can benefit from it, through his speaking, his books Faster Than Normal and The Boy with the Faster Brain , and his podcast Faster Than Normal.

He joins Timeless Leadership to share some of his observations about living with ADHD and how there’s hope for everyone — particularly children — to live productively and unselfconsciously with this superpower.

We’re living in a post-truth society. Truth and facts matter — not only because they provide a foundation of reality, but because when we’re truthful, we tell the world who we are.

As leaders, the truth matters more than we might like. Honesty, transparency, trust, and loyalty are on a continuum, and truth is the foundation of that.

It isn’t often you'll see a marketer who champions journalism.

Lou Paskalis is passionate concept of brand safety and suitability is now more necessary than ever, as brands need to protect themselves from adjacency to questionable content, platforms, and values — in all forms of media.

One of the greatest concerns of every CEO is reputational risk and in order to guard against this, they need their marketing and communications teams working together.

We touch on the third rail of ESG and DEI, as well as the waning industry of local journalism, discuss the roles that businesses might play for the sake of society, and talk about businesses’ triple bottom line (return, retention, reputation).

And we conclude with Lou’s forecast for the future of the advertising industry: one that includes addressability, quality, and a technical revolution driven by AI.

Integrity doesn’t get the headlines. And yet it’s one of the most important things that Warren Buffet considers when he hires people.

Buffet’s longtime vice chairman Charlie Munger passed away last week, and I considered some of their wisdom as the backdrop for this episode as it relates to integrity.

Tune in for that, as well as a story about how an executive turned down tens of millions of dollars offered to him.

If you were faced with the prospect of losing your business, losing friends, and being ostracized in your industry for simply doing what you thought was right, do you think you be able to do it?

That's exactly the scenario that faced Rick Wilson, co-founder of The Lincoln Project and 30-year advertising veteran for Republican political candidates. When he chose to break from the party to stop Donald Trump, he lost nearly everything. He was humiliated and horrified, but he didn’t trade his morals for money.

Our discussion includes the origin story of The Lincoln Project and its methods, the impact of social media and tightly controlled vertical platforms on society, and Elon Musk's decimation of Twitter.

It's all tied to human nature, integrity, and the courage to make hard choices when faced with moral quandaries.

Becoming a subscriber isn’t a moral quandary. It’s a moral imperative.

The pace with which the management changes happened at OpenAI this weekend is analogous to the pace of change of the technology itself.

While “move fast & break things” may have worked for Facebook (cough), there are other considerations when it comes to humanity-affecting AI.

It’s not often you get a chance to interview an industry legend. Kara Swisher is one of the top voices in the media today talking about technology and its impact on our lives.

With two regular podcasts and now as a regular panelist on The Chris Wallace Show on CNN, Kara can always be counted on for her tough but fair questioning style, her no-nonsense approach, and her insistence that the human impact be considered along with every iteration of technology.

In this wide-ranging conversation, we talk about making noise versus change, finger-pointing versus solutions, AI, some not-so-great leaders and some leaders Kara admires, her role as a parent, and much more.

“Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our lives.” — C.S. Lewis, 1960

We spend an awful lot of time trying to figure out how to best use ChatGPT and marveling at the things AI can do for us.

But one thing we can do for each other is to show our affection. Call it kindness, decency, empathy, or any other name, the point remains: we have within us something that AI can never replicate.

When Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1450, it ushered in a modern era. Or so we thought.

It was embraced and fought, but the very notion that print was supposed to simplify knowledge was turned on its head: instead, print multiplied knowledge, and often in unexpected ways.

Jeff Jarvis, in his latest book The Gutenberg Parenthesis: The Age of Print and Its Lessons for the Age of the Internet, helps us understand how we’re now at the modern equivalent of 1450 and that we need to rethink how we communicate. It will require us to give up on traditional thinking and forge new paths into the future, particularly with the advent of AI.

“It is very lonesome at the summit!”“Like a man’s life, when he has climbed to eminence.” — Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1860

Even when we reach the top, we’re not alone. We always have others to call upon, even if they’re not colleagues.

Trusted advisors keep us focused, remind us of the importance of relationships, help us keep our egos in check, and help us become lifelong learners and servants.

Some quotes from this episode that reflect the value of our advisors:

“If a man does not make new acquaintances as he advances through life, he will soon find himself left alone. A man, Sir, should keep his friendship in constant repair.” — Samuel Johnson, 1755

“Modesty is a virtue not often found among poets, for almost every one of them thinks himself the greatest in the world.” — Miguel de Cervantes, 1615

“I had been so near obtaining what I so earnestly longed for—somebody to speak to, and to learn some knowledge from them.” — Daniel Defoe, 1719

It’s tempting to think of the presidential cabinet as having always been in place. But, like the development of the U.S., government itself, it was gradual and it involved the initial leadership of George Washington.

Dr. , Senior Fellow at the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University and author The Cabinet: George Washington and the Creation of an American Institution, joins us to discuss this important step in the evolution of presidential leadership.

In the discussion, we’ll learn the reasons why Washington surrounded himself with people smarter than him, or at least those who complimented him. And how the inefficiency of Congress — something we painfully experience even today — was the impetus for the formation of the Executive branch.

All of this points toward a very modern view of leadership, consensus building, and decision-making that impact leaders at every level.

There is one commodity that is the great equalizer for everyone in the world: time. There are 24 hours in a day for each of us. The question is how we use it.

Decision-making is expected at lightning speed, even with the complexity and rigors swirling around us. And while speed is important, so is accuracy.

Your decisiveness ought to be guided by wisdom and acuity as well as by velocity.

Customer experience is the key business differentiator of the 2020s. But what about the customer experience matters?

Simply put, speed.

When 66% of customers say speed is as important as price, the conclusion is simple: give your customers time and they’ll give you money.

Leaders like Jay Baer understand what makes customers tick — too slow or too fast, and you’ll find yourself in a jam.

In this episode, Jay shares some insightful stories, funny anecdotes, and his research findings. He also has six ways to use speed as a competitive business advantage, including the Got It Audit, Answer Before They Ask, The Right Now, Close Uncertainty Gaps, and more.

Thinking about the conversation with Laura Gassner Otting in Episode 49, I was struck by our human desire to put a definition on success, and oftentimes, never being satisfied.

Kind of like how we constantly chase happiness, promising ourselves that “if only” we achieve a certain milestone, we’ll be happy.

It turns out, there’s a different formula.

Join me for this reflection. And let me know if you have any questions I can answer, like I did for Victoria in this episode. Email by replying to this post, leaving a comment, or at timelesspod [AT] scottmonty.com.

To disabuse you of what might be your first reaction: this is interview is not about gratitude — although that’s part of one of the lessons.

Jim Edwards sent out an email years ago with 19 bits of advice for a colleague who was taking a leadership position. Little did he realize that the email would not only be a set of timeless principles for any manager, but that he would add more to it — including many true, harrowing, and funny anecdotes — enough to warrant an entire book.

Jim joins Timeless Leadership to discuss many of these stories, as well as tactics and strategies to help you become a more effective leader, no matter what level of management you’re in.

You’ll especially want to hear the story about his worst job that led to him discovering the three most important things about leadership.

The world is a by-product of innovation. We know the names of famous innovators — people like Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, and Socrates — for every one of them, there have been thousands of anonymous innovators.

But there are common themes we can find in the stories of innovators and Dr. Jim Webb takes us through some of those stories in his new book Innovators Who Changed the World: Timeless Leadership Lessons from West Point, Green Berets, Sherlock Holmes, and Wall Street.

Jim joins us to talk about the leadership lessons he draws from these, plus others in his book that include such a variety of topics and personalities as judo, the Army Rangers, J.P. Morgan, Manchester United, and more.

The world has changed. Unfortunately, leadership styles haven’t changed with it. The old “Command & Control” leadership approach is no longer tenable in an era with a hybrid workforce.

Stephen M.R. Covey, a noted authority on trust and inspiration, helps 21st century leaders grasp this new reality in his book Trust & Inspire: How Truly Great Leaders Unleash Greatness in Others.

In our interview for Timeless Leadership, we explore this shift, looking at the three stewardships of modeling, trusting, and inspiring against a backdrop of uncertainty and urgency — challenges all leaders face today.

What does patriotism have to do with leadership?

Everything, it turns out. And practical philosopher Tom Morris is back to share his latest book, a timely volume that contains the secret to what we need right now.

More than the rah-rah of nationalistic jingoism, patriotism at its core is about collective responsibility. And we all have a responsibility to lead in this regard.

What would you do when you’re out of luck and your only communication is as far as you can shout?

That’s what faced Antarctic explorers of the Heroic Age, and Brad Borkan has analyzed their decisions — good and bad — and identified the behaviors and skills that we can apply to everyday scenarios on the other six continents.

In When Your Life Depends on It: Extreme Decision-Making Lessons from the Antarctic, we go on a storytelling journey and explore eleven situations through the eyes of Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, and Douglas Mawson.

As vice president, executive managing editor and copy chief, at Random House, Benjamin Dreyer pays attention to words. And people pay attention to Dreyer's words. More recently, they've been paying attention to Dreyer's English, a New York Times bestseller.

In this episode, we explore the importance of language with respect to leadership: the connection between leadership and word choice, being mindful of what we write (and say), drawing a line from clarity to morality.

We also ponder how music and the written word contribute to our understanding of language, stopping to admire Julia Child and Judith Jones along the way.

We often think of nerds as “others.” Those whom Judge Smails in Caddyshack said “don’t belong.”

But we all have quirks and ultimately we all find people with whom share our passions, interests, and ideas; from there, leadership can take root.

Curtis Armstrong is the perfect example of that. In his memoir Revenge of the Nerd, he takes us on a touching and hilarious journey from the Beatles to Sherlock Holmes and from acting to producing, with insights on leadership along the way.

The world runs on stories.

From cave paintings 30,000 years ago to the epic poems of Homer to the next installment of Ozark, humans love stories that make them feel something.

And John Livesay knows about moving people to make a sale. A former sales executive with Condé Nast, he had to make his company stand out from other publishers, and he knew he needed more than numbers.

Now known as “The Pitch Whisperer,” John has written a story (yes, it’s actually a story) in the form of a book to help anyone who wants to be more effective in presenting.

The Sale Is In the Tale is a guide that will help anyone hone their elevator story, fully develop their story of origin, case stories, playlists of stories, and more.

Leadership is anything but simple.

For centuries, we have struggled to dissect it, understand its complexities, and capture its essence.

Effective leadership is an influence process where leaders implement everyday, commonsense approaches that help people and organizations thrive.

When Ken Blanchard and Randy Conley teamed up to combine the concepts of servant leadership and trust, their output was the book Simple Truths of Leadership: 52 Ways to Be a Servant Leader and Build Trust.

In this conversation, we explore some of those truths, explore the interconnection of servant leadership and trust, and review some commonsense approaches that could use common practice.

When you spend time coaching and managing other people, there’s often one thing that gets left out: coaching yourself. It sounds like an oxymoron, as we’re all supposed to have mentors and managers who look out for us. But the reality is, there are plenty of ways to take the reins yourself—something with which remote workers have come to grips during the pandemic.

David Novak, retired chairman and CEO of Yum! Brands, is the founder of How Leaders Lead, a digital leadership development platform he created to help people become better leaders. And his latest book, Take Charge of You, is designed to help people get the best from themselves with self-coaching.

“If I were asked, now that I am drawing to the close of this work, in which I have spoken of so many important things done by the Americans, to what the singular prosperity and growing strength of that people ought mainly to be attributed, I should reply—to the superiority of their women.” — Alexis de Tocqueville, 1840

Imagine being a woman in 1822 in rural America — a mother of four, with your next child due in a month — and your husband suddenly and unexpectedly dying. What would you do?

For most women, there was no choice; but for Sarah Josepha Hale, this tragic life event is what set her in a direction that influenced much of 19th century America.

Melanie Kirkpatrick has written the definitive biography about her impact: Lady Editor: Sarah Josepha Hale and the Making of the Modern American Woman. In it, we learn of a woman driven by principle and passion, who disrupted norms but was civil about it.

It’s the story of influence, transformation, and some surprising elements.

We’ve long heard about “work-life balance.” But has it been a reality for most people? In the last couple of years, burnout has become more widespread and employees are making lifestyle choices part of their job requirements.

Jen Fisher, who serves as Deloitte’s Chief Well Being Officer, has done the research that links companies’ financial performances to the health and well-being of their employees. And she’s written about it in her book Work Better Together: How to Cultivate Strong Relationships to Maximize Well-Being and Boost Bottom Lines.

Why is it that relationships form the core of what we need at businesses? And how can leaders look out for their own well-being while making it clear that it matters for their teams as well?

In Twelfth Night, Shakespeare wrote of greatness: “be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em. Thy Fates open their hands.” And so it is with leadership. Sometimes, fate has a way of getting us to step up. That’s exactly what happened with Jim Rafferty. A tragic crime robbed his son’s scout troop of their Scoutmaster, and Jim was selected to step up. He thought they must be mistaken, but he accepted the responsibility and found more in himself than he knew there was. His growth as a leader served not only the Troop 328, but became essential a few years later when his role was eliminated at a company where he spent two decades of his career.

Jim’s story of accidental leadership holds lessons for us all.

Our first episode of Timeless Leadership in 2022 goes in the direction of philosophy and business.

Plato divulged many lessons to his students, and in doing so, enumerated a handful of leadership models that are still relevant today. These models define a number of modern leaders and are fluid enough that we can find ourselves espousing the principles of more than one of them at a time.

R. Edward Freeman, University Professor and Elis and Signe Olsson Professor of Business Administration at the Darden Graduate School of Business joins us to discuss the intersection of philosophy and business, particularly around Plato’s teachings.

This episode of Timeless Leadership takes a different turn.

Grief is a process that we’re likely all enduring right now, in one form or another. A good leader will understand that their employees are more than who they are at work—and will know the right questions to ask when they observe something.

Peg Conway observed something in herself years after her mother died with Peg was just seven years old. Something that made her realize that she never properly grieved. In The Art of Reassembly: A Memoir of Early Mother Loss and Aftergrief, Peg takes us on a deeply personal journey that is filled with lessons for anyone dealing with grief.

This week on Timeless Leadership, the topic is Realism.

As we blast into the future together on Spaceship Earth, what awaits us? Everywhere we turn, there are examples of future states that are alternatively cheery or hopeless.

But Kate O’Neill argues that the future is not binary. In fact, there are many futures that await us; it depends on how we look at it. That’s the premise of her book A Future So Bright: How Strategic Optimism and Meaningful Innovation Can Restore Humanity and Change the World.

We can’t assume that the future is a given, nor that we don’t have the power to change it. When we operate in the realm of reality, we can choose the world we leave to the next generation.

This week on Timeless Leadership, the topic is Attentiveness.

When we’re leading — particularly in moments of success — it’s common to let our guard down. To take our eyes off the ball for a moment.

It’s at that very moment that we need to be more attentive, more vigilant, than ever. And that’s what Len Herstein writes about in his new book Be Vigilant! Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success.

Len talks with us about the connection between his volunteer police job and business, and has these takeaways:

  • Steps you can take to avoid crises through threat awareness and management, scenario planning, and strategic communication.
  • Assessment tips to help focus efforts on what went wrong, and what went right, after every project—and how to learn from both.
  • The strategy of simple, sensory-based reminders to enforce positive behaviors at the workplace and at home.
  • Better management accountability and protection against harmful organizational complacency through a more engaged team.

Not to mention some dynamite quotes like this:

This week on Timeless Leadership, we're tackling the subject of Wisdom. Our guest is public philosopher Tom V. Morris, Ph.D.

Throughout history, people have looked to leaders as fonts of wisdom. Sometimes the accolade is warranted, sometimes it's a false promise.

Why is wisdom important, and how is it different from knowledge? Can we ever make a claim to wisdom? How can we recognize wisdom in others?

Tom Morris is one of the world's top public philosophers and pioneering business thinkers. He's the author of over 30 groundbreaking books and is a legendary speaker whose electrifying talks reengage people around their deepest values and reignite their passion for work and life.

Our guest is David Murray, author of An Effort to Understand: Hearing One Another (and Ourselves) in a Nation Cracked in Half.
His book is a series of essays that gives readers a window into everyday American discourse–from the rural backroads to corporate C-suites. A student of history, Murray shows that however great the personal and political divides between us, we have just as deep a desire to connect. Understanding is the bridge between discord and discourse, based on mutual trust and a desire to move forward. Links: * David's Book: An Effort to Understand * Robert F.
