The book of James tells us that if we, as followers of Jesus, lack wisdom that we should ask Him for it and that He will give it generously and He won’t be disappointed that we asked. In this episode, we talk about what wisdom is and what it isn’t. We also talk about the effects of utilizing wisdom as well as the reality of not using wisdom.

Today we’re talking about the topic of freedom. Is there a difference between God’s idea of freedom and our own? What is the responsibility of freedom? What does freedom mean for followers of Jesus? Today’s topic is no small undertaking. We’re talking about God Himself–the Holy Spirit. There can sometimes be some elusive or mysterious ideas surrounding this Divine member of the Holy Trinity and while we are no experts or Theologians, we do know Him personally. We’ll share some of the Holy Spirit’s characteristics and His role in our lives according to Scripture as well as debunk some thoughts that might get mixed in within conversations on this subject. We hope you enjoy the episode!

Anger is one of the basic emotions that we all have. It is a natural feeling and we know that even God gets angry so does anger sometimes get a bad wrap as being wrong or inherently destructive? In today’s episode, we ask the questions, “Is anger bad?” “Why do we get angry?” and “What is the difference between God’s anger and human anger?” We also talk through where the Bible tells us to “Be angry and not sin.” We hope you enjoy the conversation!

Today, we’re talking about maturity: what it is, what it isn’t, why it’s important, when the process is complete. The Bible consistently reminds us that we are to grow up and mature into strong, solid Believers, but it also says that we should remain childlike in our faith. What does this tell us about what maturity looks like in the Kingdom of God? We hope you enjoy our conversation as we cover this topic from various perspectives and angles.

On the other hand, we also talk about when resiliency can actually be to our detriment and cause us undue harm on our path towards success. We hope you enjoy today’s episode!

Choice is a powerful thing and a gift that we’ve been given by our Creator. We know that along with the agency to choose for ourselves comes a series of effects or consequences that can lead our lives in any number of directions–good, bad, and anywhere in between. In this episode, we talk about what having the power of choice means for us, how it affects others, and the responsibility that it carries.

Every person has an internal personal codebook of standards, ethics, preference, and perspective. Each codebook is uniquely shaped by our individual life experience and makeup and most often, we don’t even realize we have one. When it comes to relationships, we usually naturally assume that other people have the same codebook as we do…but they never do. This can easily create relational conflict and discomfort and cause breaks in connection big and small. In this episode, we’re explaining personal codebooks, how to recognize them, and how to navigate them with the people closest to us with the goal of optimal relational health.

Jesus talks to His followers a ton about the topic of forgiveness. His final words on earth included forgiveness and He even includes it as part of His model prayer. Clearly, this topic is of big importance to Him and therefore, it’s probably one we should take some time to consider in our own lives. In this episode, we talk about what forgiveness is and what it isn’t, some roadmap from Scripture to walk us through the steps of forgiveness, and we discuss some other aspects, benefits, and dynamics of following the way of Jesus in this valuable area of the Gospel.

The Bible tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God, but this is language that we aren’t really familiar with in our modern day lives. How do you seek a kingdom? What is the kingdom of God? How does this work? In this episode, we’re talking about what it can look like for us to seek Him first and how this can present practically in our everyday lives.

In this episode, we talk to demystify and depressurize the topic of personal purpose and calling. It can be a real challenge to know how to navigate empathy and compassion and how to best care for others while still caring for ourselves. There can be a lot of talk in the church about denying oneself, which seems totally at odds with a world that loves all things self-centered. Where is the balance? As Believers, is it always “right” to deny ourselves? Is self-flagellation "holy"? Did God create us to be full or to be empty? We’ll discuss the subject in this week’s episode as well as speaking to a listener asking for help on their journey towards freedom.

In this episode, we have a LOT to say about when Believers in Jesus try to push their own traditions on other Believers. We may be similar in many things but for some of us, the nuances of our specific way of practicing our faith become the hill we die on rather than focusing on what Jesus Himself gave His life for–people. It’s a loaded topic and we cover it from many angles. We hope you enjoy the conversation!

Gossip seems to run rampant in our world and is often even promoted and encouraged. It is a seemingly harmless way to blow off steam and get that dopamine rush of feel good chemicals when we know something about someone and get to share it with others. But in reality, gossip is far from harmless. In this episode, we revisit why we have set a standard of being a “no-gossip zone”. We also talk about the difference between actual needful communication and idle, unnecessary sharing. We hope you are encouraged to stand guard against gossip and instead choose to validate and uplift people by speaking what is good, true, lovely, and of good report.

Well, for the first time since we started this podcast, we are going to have to take a little break. Unfortunately, our third musketeer, Joel Hilton, is down for the count after an accident that led to some broken bones. :( He is currently on the road to recovery, but is not quite up to par to get back into the swing of things just yet.
We appreciate your prayers for him and his family as they navigate his healing process. He is going to be okay, but it is going to take some time for the pain to subside, the bones to heal, and to get his mobility back up to speed.
On this podcast, we talk a lot about valuing one another for who they are and what they bring to the table. For us, Joel brings not only such wisdom and perspective and levity to this show, but he is also our producer/engineer extraordinaire so rather than trying to piece together some episodes without him, we are going to press a short pause on weekly episodes and we’ll be back as soon as everyone is ready.
In the meantime, it’s a great time to catch up with past episodes if you haven’t already. You can still submit questions in advance to lifeexchangepodcast@gmail.com and as always, it means so much to us when you rate and review the podcast for us.
Until next time, we love you, and we hope to talk to you real soon!
Today’s Q&A’s include: When is it okay to compromise when I have such strong convictions? One listener asks about their tendency to catastrophize situations. And lastly, we respond to a parent who is navigating the lying habits of their child. Happy New Year and all the best from us here at Life Exchange!

We know that God loves everyone and He wants us to love them too. He also sees them as inherently valuable all of the time. Today we’re asking, is it possible for imperfect human beings to actually see the value in everyone? We’ll also look at devaluation, what that means, and what it is doing to our culture. We believe that as we see people as God sees them, we will be able to influence our world in the right direction. We’ll also look at some practical ways to do just that.

With nearly 8 billion people on the planet, there are not two of them out there that would agree on absolutely everything. Our culture can be so explosive towards these differences. We often take a disagreement as a personal attack and therefore fight back to protect our own opinion or beliefs. But is there actual value in disagreement? If so, how do we learn to disagree and still maintain healthy, life-giving relationships? That’s what we’re getting into in today’s episode. Every single person has come up against discouragement at some point in their lives, us included. It can be a scary place and lead to hopelessness and despair–not exactly a dream destination. The Bible says that hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when it is restored again, it is like a tree of life. Today we want to talk about some warning signs to watch out for that tell us we may be headed down a path of discouragement; we’ll also share some ways for how to re-route, how to access hope and courage, and how to become like that tree of life again.

Our culture seems to always be speaking to us in the competing narratives of: DO MORE vs. DO LESS. On one hand, we should all be doing our part of contributing and have dreams and goals we are reaching towards and wanting to make the world a better place. On the other hand, we’re taught the importance of rest and contentment and being present and enjoying where we are right now. So how do these two streams of thought reconcile? That’s what we’re talking about in today’s episode.

We believe what the Bible says about God: that every good and perfect gift comes from Him. But does He only give gifts when we’ve earned them? When He’s feeling generous? When we are growing? When we are perfect? And does He take them away from us to teach us lessons? Today, we’re talking about God’s abundant nature, what it says about Him and what it means for us and how we relate to Him.

Last week we talked about how God’s will for our lives is to carry the nature of thanksgiving as part of our daily character. We were on such a role that we never around to sharing with you some of the benefits of a thankful life. That’s what we’re here for today. Gratitude is more than just a good idea or an act of politeness or respect. When God instructs us to do something, it’s because it’s good for us; it actually benefits our lives in important ways. That’s what we hope for you in this conversation, that you hear more than just some good ideas but actual tools and principles that enrich and empower your life and relationships for good.

We all know that we are supposed to be thankful. It’s one of the first behaviors that we learn as children when the magic words are “please and thank you.” But is thankfulness actually more than just a polite practice or a good thing to do? We think so…and so does God. In today’s episode, we’re talking about more than just surface level gratitude and looking at what the Scriptures say about actually taking on thankfulness as part of our very nature.

The very definition of vulnerability is to put yourself in a position to be attacked. Nobody wants to be attacked, so why are we even talking about this subject?! Vulnerability does come with an inherent risk, that’s true. But the risk can be very worth the reward that it brings. We all have an innate core need to be seen and known and loved. That need cannot be met without first doing the brave work of vulnerability

Bravery is a big word for us in our culture. It’s one of our core values at Giving Light so for us, it’s in our DNA. Today we’ll talk about what living bravely means to us. Sometimes bravery is exactly what you think it is: a big showy display of courage in the face of fear. And sometimes it is a lot more subtle, not obvious, but very profound act of obedience. We hope this episode leaves you wanting to live a more brave life, but maybe even more so, that you recognize the bravery that you are already living in

Not a single one of us enjoys being manipulated or taken advantage of and yet, we're pretty sure that we have all experienced it at some point in our lives. In today’s episode, we’re talking about identifying manipulation when it’s happening to us and when it’s happening in us. That’s right, manipulation is not just an “everybody else” topic, we can also fall prey to the trap of using it to meet our needs in an exploitative way–even and often unconsciously. We hope that as you listen in on this conversation that it helps you to both heal from past experiences and to give you tools to walk in greater freedom and clarity within yourself and with others. What are the benefits of living for a cause higher than ourselves? Is it worth the effort? What does the Bible say about this topic? These are all questions we’ll explore in today’s episode. Living for ourselves will earn us some level of fulfillment, security, and for some, even prestige, but will that be enough to satisfy us in the long run? Perhaps the cost and benefits of generosity and service yield a much higher reward. We hope you enjoy our conversation and that it leaves you feeling connected with purpose and ready to live for a higher cause.

Personality assessments and conversations seem to be everywhere these days. Today, we want to explore this topic a little more and talk about what personality actually is, when it’s developed, how it does and doesn’t serve us, and ask if it’s something we may put a little too much stock in sometimes. Understanding our motivations and proclivities and the reasons for them can be a helpful tool for sure, but let’s make sure to keep personality and identity in the right lanes.

We all love when we know a person who is responsible and we can count on. It creates a sense of safety and trust and we often look up to them. But actually BEING that responsible person is a whole new ball game. Responsibility requires work and a lot of it. It’s not the easy work of life and rarely is it fun, but is it worth it? We think so and that’s what we’re talking about in today’s episode. Some people will stay content to do the bare minimum in life and that is their choice, but as leaders, we want to raise the bar. No one person is responsible for it all, but every person is responsible for what is theirs.

We are thinking machines. Our minds are constantly, consciously and unconsciously processing information and forming thoughts. The thoughts that we accept begin to shape the way that we live. We know from Matthew 12:34 that “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Put simply, what we allow in will affect what comes out. In this episode, we’ll be exploring our thought lives, how much power we have over our thoughts, and how to think about what we’re thinking about. If we really can be transformed by the renewing of our mind, this topic is an important one.

Let’s face it: we don’t know what we don’t know. We’ve all had times in our lives when we realized that ignorance isn’t bliss after all. In today’s episode, we’re talking through our spin on the cycle that psychology calls, “The Four Stages of Competence.” Moving through a state of unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, development, and ultimately conscious competence. Each of us are always moving through this process of discovery, awareness, learning, and growth. It isn’t always comfortable, but it’s good for us.

We can spend a lot of time and thought and energy focused on the future and what’s to come down the road for us. We can also get tripped up looking backwards to the good ole days, or beating ourselves up with regrets and slip ups of the past. Both the past and the future do have their importance and in fact we’ll touch on that here today. But this episode is especially focused on the space in between them: the value of today. The present is what we have right now and the way that we think about it can determine what we do with it and the current moments that make up the story of our lives.

Today we are asking the question: should we care what other people think? and exploring both sides of this paradoxical coin. On one hand, there are times when we need to turn off the opinions of others so that we can live out our own purpose and calling and on the other hand, sometimes we need other people’s thoughts and perspectives to help us to grow in that purpose and calling. That’s what we’re tackling in this episode and we hope it gets you thinking in the best and balanced way.

Like many things in the Kingdom of God, authority is a subject that often looks much different to God than it looks to the world. For example, while the disciples argued over greatness, Jesus taught us to be a servant of all. Today we’re tackling the topic of positional authority vs. moral authority. We’ll talk about the differences and explore the upside and downside of both. Moral authority may not come with the status or titles that we sometimes seek after, but we’ll see how it can actually create more influence and impact for good than climbing the world’s ladder of success.

We all know that walking in offense is not a healthy way to live. But sometimes we take on the offense of another and it feels like we’re fighting a cause of justice on their behalf. They got hurt and now we step into the position of an emotional vigilante to protect ourselves and others. In actuality, if it isn’t our realm of influence or responsibility, that false sense of justice may just be us walking in secondhand offense. That’s what we’re talking about in today’s episode: what happens when we pick up an offense that was never ours to begin with and how do we make the choice to put it down. So without further ado, here is today’s episode on secondhand offense.

Shame is a topic we often like to avoid. That avoidance comes with the territory of shame. But today, we’re going there and we’ll talk about what shame can look like, where it comes from, and ways to walk in freedom from it. None of us were created to remain hidden under a cloud of false identity or to be controlled by a false reality. We were created to be free in who God made us to be. That’s our goal in this episode: that the truth would make us free to embrace our true identity and walk in the abundant life that God has for us.

All of us have to make decisions every single day, but we don’t all share the same trajectory on how we make those choices. Some of us tend to make decisions based upon an intuitive gut feeling and some of us rely more on facts and processes. So which way is better? This is what we’re tackling today as we talk about our differences in the deciding process and what lends best to certain situations. We hope that by the end of this episode you see the value in your decision making style AND that you would see the value in those who think differently.

“If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Most of us have heard this phrase but in our culture, it is rarely put into practice. In this episode, we talk about the power of the prophetic to pull out the gold in people to validate their identity and worth. Not subscribing to cruelty or cancel culture trends is one thing, but as Believers, we can also ask the Holy Spirit to help us to counter that culture and be voices of Heaven to the people around us.
