Tasracing
Last weekend, Brodie Davis continued his excellent form in the sulky by winning the BOTRA Claiming Novice Drivers Championship. The five-race series was held in Hobart on Sunday night.
Mickey Oh (pictured) was a tough winner in the Elite Free For All, racing outside the leader thought to score in slick time.
Last year’s on-track performances were acknowledged at the Tasmanian Harness Racing Awards and Hall Of Fame dinner, which was held in Hobart on Friday. Magician was announced as the Horse of the Year.
This week, harness racing will be held in Hobart on Friday night and in Launceston on Sunday evening.
The StarsBrodie Davis – took out the BOTRA Claiming Novice Drivers Championship, with the five-heat series being held in Hobart on Sunday night. Davis accumulated 47 points, finishing six clear from Charlie Castles and Olivia Weidenbach, who both dead-heated for second.
Mickey Oh – trainer-driver Matthew Howlett was keen to hold the position outside the leader in the Elite Free For All, and the tactic of keeping race favourite Star Major three-wide the trip proved to be a winning move. The winning mile rate of 1:55.4s was a career-best winning mile rate.
Just Tiger – completed a winning hatrick when taking out the Vale Max Hall Pace. The win was trainer Charlies Castles’s 100th driving victory.
Tiarna Ford – was another one to record a milestone win when she recorded her 50th driving aboard Mister Finnigan.

In the early hours, Overseas contenders include Ignatius, who lines up at Freehold Raceway in New Jersey, while Lip Reader will contest a race at Buffalo Raceway in New York.
Fresh off winning last month’s $75,000 Easter Cup, 17-year-old junior driver Brodie Davis won the five-race BOTRA Claiming Novice Drivers Series held in Hobart on Sunday night.
Davis drove one winner, two placings, while another finished last in the four heats he contested.
“It’s a big thrill to win it. I had some good drives, and they all went well, so I’m thrilled,” Davis said.
His win came aboard the Paul Carlson-trained mare Sweet Amour ($3.30 fav) in heat two of the series.
Sweet Amour was positioned one out and one back for the final 1100m of the 1609m event before Davis peeled the mare three-wide at the top of the home straight to go on and score by 1.7m in a mile rate of 2:00.1s.
“I thought she would go pretty close.
“She travelled well and settled nicely and was able to get over the top of them late. She got the easiest run of the race and did no work to get there at all,” Davis said.
Other heat winners included Royal Appointment ($1.65 fav) for Kayleb Williams, Mister Finnigan ($7.00), who gave driver Tiarna Ford her 50th career win, Isolation for Charlie Castles and Olivia Weidenbach drove Remember Me Now to win the final heat.
Unfortunately, Malcom Jones was unable to take his place in the series after fracturing his leg playing football on Saturday. He was replaced on his drives by Jakob White.
Final points: Brodie Davis 47, Charlie Castles and Olivia Weidenbach 41, Kayleb Williams 40, Tiarna Ford 39, Jack Watson 29, Jacob Duggan 28, Andrew Freeman 26, Lachlan Dakin 24 and Jakob White 19.
Earlier in the night, Charlie Castles out-drove his concession claim when recording his 100th career win aboard in-form pacer Just Tiger ($2.20), whom he also trains.
In the Cavalor Equicare Elite Free For All, the Matthew Howlett-trained and driven Mickey Oh ($3.50) proved too tough for his rivals racing outside the leader. He went on to score by 1.6m over Diamonds And Cash ($41) and Colby Sanz ($91), running the mile in 1:55.4s.
Punters were cashed up after the Launceston meeting on Sunday night with all nine runners firming on the Tasracing Official Price.
It was a record-breaking weekend for trainer Ben Yole and one that saw the dominance of trainer Tammy Langley at all three meetings.
This week, there is one meeting in Hobart on Friday night before the Burnie race on Wednesday the 27th.
If that wasn’t enough, trials have been added to the calendar on Thursday afternoon, the 28th, at Carrick.
The StarsBen Yole -broke his own record for the most number of wins in a season when Where Ya Bin delivered him his 392nd Australian season win in Burnie on Friday. Yole looks well placed to become the first trainer in the country to train 400 season wins with runners spread across Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales over the next week.
Tammy Langley – moved to equal second on the state trainers premiership after training a double at Burnie on Friday, a treble at King Island on Saturday and a winner on Sunday night’s Launceston card.
Mickey Oh – ended his season on a winning note when he easily overcame a 10-metre handicap to score in the $14,000 Danbury Park Cup over 2698m. Trainer-driver Matthew Howlett got the pacer away well to race outside the leader for most of the race and proved tough late. The win took his stake earnings for the season past $58,000.
All By Myself – was never in doubt after leading the majority of the way to score in the Shirley Martin Mother Of Pearl. The mare has put herself in strong contention for what appears to be an even Mare Of The Year category. The win was one of three driving wins for her trainer, Rohan Hillier.

Mickey Oh delivered another tough performance when taking out the $14,000 Doug Martin Danbury Park Cup (2698m) in Launceston on Sunday night.
The four-year-old gelded son of Racing Hill began well from his 10m handicap, which allowed trainer-driver Matthew Howlett to press forward three-wide in the early stages to find the spot outside the leader near the 2250m.
From there, Howlett drove a confident race on the $2.90 favourite, who took over at the top of the home straight and proved too good late for Kuzma ($9.00) by 1.7m with Jimmy The Irishman ($7.00) a further 2.1m away in a mile rate of 2:01.3s.
“He stepped away well tonight. I made some gear changes, which I hope has fixed his manners from the Golden Apple. He had a trial at the start of the week to get more practice, so hopefully, he’ll continue to improve,” said a happy Matthew Howlett post-race.
“His New South Wales campaign did him the world of good, and he’s come home a different horse. There are a few features coming up that he will be set for, and it’s great to know he handed the longer trip well. He is certainly something special,” the trainer, driver and part-owner added.
“The Brighton Cup (on 7 January in Hobart) will be the next target, then the team will re-access from that and just take it one race at a time,” Howlett said,
The win was the second leg of a training and driving double for Howlett, who had success earlier in the program with Galaxy Dancer in the Betty Lee Pace (2200m)
The A Rocknroll Dance gelding had been runner-up in his previous three starts and, despite drawing barrier seven was back in from $6.00 into the $3.60 favourite who led up the one-wide line.
“He’s been racing well of late and glad to finally get a win after his last few runs getting pipped on the line. I tried to wait as long as possible before I really went for him as he likes to pull up before the line,” and pull up he did after racing several metres clear of his rivals before switching off to record a short-half head win over Justify ($5.50).
The other feature race on the program was the $14,000 Shirley Martin Mother Of Pearl, which was taken out by the Rohan Hillier trained and driven All By Myself ($1.16 fav), who led for the final mile of the race.
All By Myself won the Group 3 Tassie Golden Apple at her previous outing and is now a strong contender for the Tasmanian Mare Of The Year.
The mile rate of 1:57.8s was 0.6s outside Shes Magnetic’s 2200m mares record that was set in May 2018.
The Dynamo hit Hobart on Friday night with a large crowd on track to watch the eight 1120m events, where plenty of equine talent was displayed in the eight heats.
Rohan Hillier was one of the standout performers at the Hobart meeting, and he continued that form in Launceston on Sunday.
This week, Burnie races on Friday night before the action turns to Launceston on Sunday night for a 10-race card.
The program includes heats of the Bandbox and Globe Derby.
The Bandbox will see a battle for the last spot in the field and the emergency to be determined by the last place getters in each heat.
Those contesting the Globe Derby won’t worry about booking a spot in the final, as every horse has to safely complete the course with the total of acceptors for the heats not exceeding the field limit for the final.
Meanwhile, Tasmanian-owned mare Bridwood Bella was sold to oversees interest several weeks ago and will do her further racing in North America.
The StarsHy Leinvincible – led all the way to record the quickest winning time of 1:17.5s on Dynamo night in Hobart on Friday night, earning his connections an additional $20,000. The Roll With Joe gelding has now won four of five starts since arriving in the care of trainer Rohan Hillier, who was also in the sulky for the win.
Rohan Hillier – was one of the standout performers with a training and driving double in Hobart, plus a driving treble in Launceston, with two of those winners being on horses he trained, including All By Myself who was resuming in a 60 to 74 event.
Mickey Oh – returned to the track after a short let-up from his New South Wales campaign when winning a heat of the Dynamo on Friday. The gelding was then defeated by a head in a standing start trial on Monday as connections eye off the upcoming Tassie Golden Apple.
Rackemup Tigerpie – is another Tassie Golden Apple prospect, who was in the winner’s list when coming from second-last at the 600m and then circled the field right off the track to score his fourth win of the season.
Loyola Trios – appreciated a drop in grade to take out Sunday’s Trainers Encouragement event to give trainer and part-owner Kyle Pratten a much-needed boost after watching the race in hospital after a track work accident earlier in the week.

It’s time for those considering chasing Tasracing’s Eureka slot to stand up.
With the Raider Stakes, Granny Smith, and a $20,000 3YO lead-up race all scheduled for Hobart in July, which will then culminate in the $80,000 Qualification race in early August.
The Qualification race is restricted to Tasbred three and four-year-old’s or Australian bred horses of the same age, that are 100% owned by a Tasmanian resident (or residents) for no less than 12 months, and 100% trained by a licensed Tasmanian trainer for no less than six months before the race.
That winner will fly the Tasracing flag in the $2.1 million Eureka at Menangle on 2 September.
Several eligible horses for the Tasracing slot were out in force last weekend, while some were spotted in last weekend’s trials at Carrick Park and Hobart in what should be a fantastic few months of racing ahead.
The StarsReely Nauti – claimed the $30,000 Trainers Encouragement Final with a dominant 4m win. Trainer Paul Hill has sent the filly to the spelling paddock before chasing some features later in the season.
Iylac Pakaria – returned for the first time as a three-year-old with a dominant 14.5m win against the older horses in a slick 1m 57.3s for trainer Bianca Heenan and reinsman Mitch Ford.
Baby You A Song – also made a big impression with her race track return in Launceston when she dashed home in a 56.8s last half mile to score by 25.4m with her trainer, Rohan Hillier, in the sulky.
Ben Yole – trained five winners in Tasmania last weekend and recorded his 1,700th career winner at Shepparton on Tuesday.

The Doug and Shirley Martin race night in Launceston looked to be a brilliant meeting on paper, and the racing certainly delivered with Ryley Major taking out the Danbury Park Cup, while Iden Miss Lucy (pictured) scored in the L.P.C’s premier mare’s race, the Mother Of Pearl.
It was also a weekend of milestones for leading trainer Ben Yole.
The StarsBen Yole – reached two milestones last weekend. First, in Burnie on Friday, he became the first Tasmanian trainer in any code to train 300 winners in a season. Then in Launceston on Sunday, he trained his 1,500th career winner as he closes in on Barrie Rattray’s record for a Tasmanian licensee of 1,646.
Ryley Major – how good is this rising 10-year-old going? When commencing this campaign, he recorded his quickest winning mile rate for races between 2000m and 2300m. His Golden Apple placing was exceptional. Then on Sunday, he overcame a 30m handicap when well-driven to win in the Danbury Park Cup.
Iden Miss Lucy – was another that was well-driven to score in the Mother Of Pearl. From barrier seven Mark Yole speared straight to the lead and was too good for her rivals late for her seventh win of the season.
The Brooklyn Brawler – put up a brilliant battle to beat Lynryd Skynyrd in a rating 65 to 74 event on Sunday night. The gelded son of Art Major has won three of six starts this season and was a tough performance after leading up the three-wide line for the final lap.
