Bible Verse: Matthew 23:1-12

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

5 “Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries[a] wide and the tassels on their garments long;6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.

8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

God abandons his own temple based on Ezekiel 8 by Stephen Gardiner

View Details

Speaker: Stephen Gardiner

Speaking on: Ezekiel 1:1 - 14 and 1:22 - 25

Also read: Psalm 137:1 - 4

CONTEXT:

On the fifth of the month – it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin – the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the River Kebar in the land of the Babylonians. (vv2,3)

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. … How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land? (Psalm 137:1,4)

CONCLUSION:

“Our Father in Heaven”: let us remember His glory.

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles…” (1 Peter 2:11): but God is near us.

We pray “your kingdom come, your will be done” (Matthew 6:10): for the kingdom, the power and the glory are His, now and for ever. Amen.

So let us thank God for this new covenant as we seek to:

And let us trust in God’s sure promises as we look forward to the future that He has prepared for us.

John 14:1-31

  1. What are you afraid of today?

If you will come to Him, the Lord can and will replace your fear with His precious peace.

  1. Are you able to get your eyes above your trials, and see the gates of home?

If the burdens of life have gotten you down, come before the Lord and let Him help you cast your gaze higher than this earth.

  1. What are you trusting in to take you to Heaven?

Everybody believes in something.  Have you ever trusted Jesus as your personal Saviour? If not, you can be saved if you will come to Him by faith.

  • 3:21  The story so far
  • 3:22-24 The level playing field
  • 3: 24-25 Resting your weight on Christ
  • 3:26 A licence to live

21But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—26he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Exodus 4:1-5, 18-20.

1 Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?” 2Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. 3The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.4Then the Lord said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. 5“This,” said the Lord, “is so that they may believethat the Lord, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.”

1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.6He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.
