On April 19, Dmitry Petrov, a Russian anarchist fighting on the side of Ukraine, died in battle near Bakhmut.
For almost twenty years, Dima contributed immensely to the anarchist movement in Russia and Ukraine. Dima was, first and foremost, a person of action, not a theoretician. Although, a rather interesting synthesis of ideas was also observable in his practice that deserves broad discussion within the anarchist movement and will now need to be further developed without him.
I began to write this text immediately after Dima’s death was confirmed, but the text dragged on, and in the meantime, a lot had already been said. Therefore, I will concentrate on those aspects of Dima’s activities that have been written about less so far, namely his student activism and other (semi-)open projects in Moscow in the 2000s, his religious views, and the first stages of his underground activities.

Last September, some Italian anarchists published a collective letter criticising Ukrainian anarchists for defending themselves and their movement against Russian imperialist aggression.

The argument is based on both ethical and factual points. I will start by commenting on the latter, as unfortunately it seems like these comrades have fallen into an alternative reality, shaped by Russia Today and other Russian-sponsored social media disinformation.

There is a fundraising campaign going on for antiwar prisoners in Russia, and until midnight of tomorrow 3000 euros should be raised, and quite a big amount is still missing: https://www.firefund.net/antiwarprisoners2022To me it seems that it is not obvious for everyone, how supporting this prisoners is part of the general anti-war effort, and actually a crucial part in bringing down the Russian regime. Supporting prisoners involved in a direct action against war and Russian regime is not just a humanitarian effort, although due to current circumstances in Russia, support has to be framed as humanitarian, ”non-political” effort. The point is not only to help these people facing draconian charges (often from 15 years in prison to a life sentence), but also to legitimize direct actions in general. Russian state and mainstream media says these people are terrorists. Prisoner support counters this claim. Prisoner support shows, that direct action against war is the most normal reaction in the current circumstances. Many of the arrested, who are suspected of direct actions, have been acting alone, in isolation, often without proper security culture. This is unfortunate, but by creating an international movement of support, we may replace this current isolation with solidarity. This way the next wave of direct actions may be more collective and more planned. After Russian invasion of 24th of February, Ukrainian anarchists have mobilised to resist the invasion, and most of the anarchists in Russia have either fleed from the country or joined the anti-war movement, which has yet failed to make a significant impact to stop the war.
Meanwhile, there is also lots of confusion about the situation in the left and anarchist movement worldwide, as number of "alternative" news outlets is spreading Russian narrative, that Ukraine is a state controlled by Nazis, and that there is a genocide of Russians and other minorities in Ukraine.
How to counter pro-Russian propaganda? How credible is the "neutral" stance that both sides are equally evil? What are the current anti-war initiatives in Russia to follow? How to support Russian anti-war movement, which is operating in more and more repressive circumstances?

Solidarity with anti-war movement in Russia

Thousands of Russians have been resisting against the invasion to Ukraine. During first month of protests, 15 000 people were detained. Actions still continue, but in a smaller scale. At least 28 people are in prison, suspected of direct actions or just speaking out against the war. Military call-up centers have been torched, and railways sabotaged in at least 10 regions of Russia. What are the current anti-war initiatives in Russia to follow? Ever since the beginning of the Russian invasion against Ukraine, we have seen statements by anarchists, communists and leftists not from Ukraine, on how Ukrainian anarhists, communists and leftists should not defend themselves against attack of Putin, but lay down their arms and flee instead. Before the anarchist failures in 1920's, 1930's and 1940's, anarchists never made such senseless statements.

Anarchism has many meanings - it means chaos, quirky individuality and a school of political thought and a social movement, born in 19th century. As a movement, anarchism has both over- and underperformed during its history. Overperformed, because no-one questions importance of individuality. Underpeformed, because promised future without state and capital has failed to materialize. Its classical thinkers are simultaneously completely out of date, and clairvoyants of the present reality and struggles. As Max Stirner wrote, people of the future will yet fight their way to many a liberty that we do not even miss.

In April 2017, a bombing took place in the Saint Petersburg metro. The explosion killed 16 people and injured 103.
Russian security services arrested 11 suspects. They were sentenced last December. All of them denied the charges. The Memorial human rights organization sees the trial as questionable.
