Exploring the relationships between the stories we love and the stories we live. Hosted by award-winning teacher and Narrative Practitioner Derrick Hatch.
Have you ever told yourself a story, or held a belief, that limited what you could do? In this episode, transformational coach Caroline Rena helps us explore the relationships between narratives and our own beings. Our conversation takes us on a journey through Jungian archetypes, generational differences, and the super power of being an empath.
Caroline Rena is a Transformational Coach who helps people heal from trauma and uncover the truth of who they are. She is also a Writer, Poet, Singer/Songwriter and loves traveling. Her experiences in healing from Trauma/Complex PTSD, Military Sexual Trauma and Harassment, among other things, through the nervous system, has helped her to expand her ability to be a Master at Holding a Safe Space for others to heal. She uses what she has come to understand about how the body must be part of the healing process, not just the mind. Caroline also has the ability to meet people where they are, so they can make a positive impact on their lives by learning how to work with anxiety, depression, grief, or whatever may be coming up for them and keeping them stuck.Connect with Caroline at:

Do you think it's getting harder to do good deeds in our modern society? Is the world getting worse, or has it always been this bad? In this second part to our previous episode, we continue our discussion on the Crime genre with an analysis of the Coen Brothers' thought-provoking film No Country For Old Men. We wrestle with this challenging commentary about the nature of arbitrary violence in our chaotic world.
Llewelyn Moss stumbles upon dead bodies, $2 million and a hoard of heroin in a Texas desert, but methodical killer Anton Chigurh comes looking for it, with local sheriff Ed Tom Bell hot on his trail. The roles of prey and predator blur as the violent pursuit of money and justice collide.

You ever had an experience with a story that stirred something profound within you? Though most stories explore one's inner-life, there is an often neglected category of stories that specialize in the metaphysical. These journeys examine the philosophical, religious, and spiritual components that reshape our identity and make life meaningful. Jason and Nick return to the podcast to explore why these stories resonate with us so much, and what it's like for us to embark on our own metaphysical journeys.

Derrick and Joseph team up to do our first in-depth film analysis of the 1998 masterpiece The Truman Show. Think you know this film well? We break down everything from the filmmaking, to the symbolism, to character motivations, and even biblical allusions, all in an attempt to see how this film speaks to us today as an eerie prophecy that's come to fruition.
Truman Burbank is the star of The Truman Show, a 24-hour-a-day reality TV show that broadcasts every aspect of his life without his knowledge. His entire life has been an unending soap opera for consumption by the rest of the world. And everyone he knows, including his wife and his best friend is really an actor, paid to be part of his life.

This all-star line-up includes Narrative Therapist Emily Bostrom, Narrative Social Worker Sarah Houston, and writer and Narrative Practitioner Andrea Wilson. Emily Bostrom loves people and their stories. She lives in western Canada surrounded by forest, rivers and lakes. Her website is www.innergravity.ca
Sarah Houston lives with her partner and two sons in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The traditional custodians of this beautiful land were the nations that make up the Blackfoot Confederacy. She is a registered Social Worker and current student in the Masters of Narrative Therapy and Community Work program. She is interested in opportunities to make space for voices with lived experience and the power of collective documents.
In summer 2022, Andrea Wilson was the narrative therapist in residence for TendHer, a program of mental resilience for 1000+ women across Iowa. She recently taught an Iowa Writers' House workshop on Narrative therapy and memoir writing with famed memoirist, Hope Edelman.

Today I am honored to share my conversation with world-renowned Narrative Practitioner, teacher, and writer David Denborough. We discuss David's experience working in prisons, contributing to social actions, deconstructing masculinity, and his use of songs and folk culture to honor people's stories.
David Denborough works as a community worker, teacher and writer/editor for Dulwich Centre. He is particularly interested in cross-cultural partnerships which limit the chances of psychological colonization and create possibilities for cross-cultural inventions, such as the Team of Life Narrative Approach and Tree of Life (with Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo). These collective narrative methodologies seek to assist people to address the effects of traumatic experiences without having to speak directly about them. David is also vitally interested in how collective narrative practices can spark and/or sustain social movementand in projects that respond to racism and seek to strengthen social cohesion/inclusion. Recent teaching/community assignments have included Brazil, Palestine, Singapore, Austria, Brazil, Hong Kong, Kurdistan (Iraq), India, Canada, Sri Lanka, Argentina, Chile, South Africa and a number of Aboriginal Australian communities. David is also a coordinator of the Master of Narrative Therapy and Community Work with the University of Melbourne where he is also involved in supporting/supervising graduate researchers. His songs in response to current social issues have received airplay throughout Australia and Canada. His books/publications include: Retelling the Stories of Our Lives Everyday Narrative Therapy to Draw Inspiration and Transform Experience and Collective Narrative Practice: Responding to Individuals, Groups and Communities Who Have Experienced Trauma. To learn more about David and his work, please visit The Dulwich Centre website.

Welcome to our first panel featuring Narrative Practitioners from Australia, Canada, and America. We discuss a variety of topics, including our use of language with those we work with, the discourses within 'Tick, Tick, BOOM', and the importance of being de-centered, yet influential in our work.
Kate’s belief that everyone has a story to tell drives every creative program and workshop that she develops and is the driving force behind the foundation of the Book Incubator. Known for her empathy and compassion mixed with a rather wicked sense of humour, Kate has the ability to quickly create bonds and build safe places for people to share their stories. She has created a series of award winning Narrative Therapy initiatives that support her belief in the importance of written, visual and oral storytelling. Kate is a sought after speaker in the corporate sector, in communities and at creative forums.
Tobias Rader lives with his partner, his two children and dog in Port Alberni, BC Canada. He is a Social Worker and Narrative Therapist, working for the Province of BC and in private practice. He has a deep interest in the use of silence in Narrative practice and is most curious in finding rich narratives that are unspoken.
Kristin Pedemonti, Master’s Narrative Therapy & Community Work is a Narrative Practitioner specializing in piecing together preferred stories with survivors of abuse, addictions, and assault. She has worked with persons with lived experiences of: childhood trauma, domestic violence, trafficking and war. Recipient of National Storytelling Network’s International StoryBridge Award she has presented and performed on 5 continents in 20 countries, her favorite Iran. She is also a Storytelling Consultant at the World Bank. Kristin is the author of three books, most recently A Bridge of Stories which chronicles her journey creating and facilitating a decolonized seven year volunteer literacy project in Belize.

What do you do when you're stuck in a rut? When I graduated from college, I thought that everything would fall into place. Of course it didn't quite work out like that. I needed to make tough choices, including where I was going to work and live. It was time to leave the comforts of home and venture into the unknown. This Transparent Tuesday is all about the friend that convinced me to go, the friend that got me there, the friend that took me in once I arrived, and the woman who made the adventure worthwhile.

On this week's episode, I interview Hollywood Screenwriter Kyle Arrington, and how a combination of timing, location, luck, and perseverance landed him writing roles on hit TV shows such as The Originals, House M.D., and Conan. We discuss how we find inspiration from the stories around us, sharing your passion project with others, what it's like being in a writers room, Derrick's pitch for a Silver Surfer film, and how we learn from both our successes and our failures.
"Kyle Arrington is a TV & Feature writer, having written and produced two features -- Dead Dad and Recovery -- and numerous episodes of CW's "The Originals" over its 5-season run. In addition, he worked on House, M.D., The Big C, Conan, was the Showrunner for Snapchat's "Save Me", and is currently developing projects for multiple studios and production companies, including a Supernatural Vietnam War series for Sony along with producing partners Franklin Leonard/The Blacklist and Vertigo Entertainment. In addition to his writing, Kyle teaches TV Writing at the Florida State University Film School's MFA Screenwriting program and the University of Delaware, and is also a Program Director for Film Festivals. But most of all, Kyle enjoys going on adventures with his wife and son."
