Epic Dad Legacy: Recent Episodes

Drew

Are you ready to become the Dad you know you were meant to be? Good, because this is the Epic Dad Legacy podcast, where imperfect action is better than perfect ideas, promises kept are more important than promises made, and nothing happens unless you make it happen.

My name is Drew, father of 3, and founder of The Epic Dad Co. and my mission is to help Dads up their game and become the husbands, fathers, and men they are called to be.

I truly believe that more present and engaged fathers will change the world. Thanks for listening, and let's start the episode.

Today we’ve got on Brandon Horoho.

Brandon is a husband, father, and co-owner of the Montana Knife Company. I really love the Montana Knife Company, and the values they stand for. In today’s day and age, it is easy for brands and companies to sway with the wind - changing their values to make a quick buck. It’s much more difficult to plant your flag in the ground, state boldly and courageously what you stand for, and build a true culture.

In this episode we talk about:

  • How Montana Knife Company built an incredible and authentic brand and lessons you can implement into your own life
  • The importance of tradition within our families
  • How dad life has been going while being at the help of a massively growing brand
  • Important lessons he is teaching his kids

Today I’ve got on Jordo Mederich.

Jordo is a husband, father, and business owner. Jordo is the founder of DropFunnels, which is an all-in-one marketing solution to get you online with a website in minutes.

I wanted to have a discussion with Jordo because his approach to balancing entrepreneurship and fatherhood is one that I agree with, and I was curious as to how he can find that balance.

All of us, whether you are a business owner or not, are looking for some type of freedom and flexibility so that we can be with our families as much as possible. And yet, we also have this other side of us that wants to achieve and excel in the workplace - and finding the balance between these two is usually messy business.

Today Jordo and I talk about his journey to becoming an entrepreneur as a father, some of the lessons he has learned along the way, and how we can strike that balance between being a high performer and a great father.

Today I’ve got on Nick Krantz.

Nick is a husband, father, and online fitness and nutrition coach - better known by his handle neurofitnick

Nick has suffered over 17 concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), beginning in high school as a football player, with numerous concussions continuing through his playing career and long after. After trying everything the doctor’s could throw his way, Nick found hope and recovery through more natural and holistic methods - which we will discuss today.

Along this path to self-recovery, Nick learned that the actions, routines, and habits he was leaning into to help with his TBI’s, helped him also become a better father.

Today Nick helps men and women from all walks of life to get into better shape, improve their mental state, and build discipline. I love Nick’s simple approach to peak performance as a father. Most often, the simpler we can keep things, the more consistent we will be.

Discipline, routines, habits, and self development are key to growth. And growth enables you to show up as a better person than you were before.

But sometimes we can take it to the extreme - sacrificing family time to “pour into ourselves”.

At the end of the day - our job as Dads is to sacrifice what is important to us for what is important to the family. You need to be “filling up your cup” so that you can show up for your family, but never at the expense of your family.

Today we talk through one strategy called “dad hours” to help put a frame around personal development as a Dad.

Today we’ve got on Matt Vincent.

Matt is a 2 time Highland Games World Champion, world traveler, founder of the brand Not Dead Yet, runs the UMSO podcast, and is an all around awesome dude. I’ve been following Matt’s journey for a few years now, and really appreciate his approach to life.

Matt is not a Dad, and he’ll be the first to tell you that he doesn’t want to be one, but I think that we can gain a ton of valuable insight from some of Matt’s philosophies around life. Matt lost his Dad suddenly to cancer, and it has played a major role in how he has shaped his life. From that experience, Matt has vowed to live his life on his terms, understanding how precious it actually is and how none of us are getting out alive.

I just absolutely love the clarity around life that Matt has and his attitude is infectious and inspires others to go out and live their dreams. And us as Fathers, should be setting that example for our kids.

During our chat, Matt and I discuss:

-The meaning of his brand Not Dead Yet

-Why fathers are incredibly important

-How to live life as if your days are numbered, because they are

Today I have on Reed Moore.

Reed is the lead pastor at Gwinnett Church, where my family attends; Reed’s approach to the pulpit is way different than the way I witnessed growing up, and my family feels like they have found a home for our faith. And a lot of that is because of Reed.

In this episode Reed and I talk about how us Dads need to step up and be the leaders for our family in our faith. Most of the time we delegate this responsibility to Mom, but it is on us to set the example of how a man should live in faith.

We get very tactical and practical on how we can bring the topic of faith up with our children, and what the Bible says about how we should approach fatherhood.

Cody is a former preacher, former firefighter, father of 6 and leader of the men’s movement and coaching group the Iron Society.

In this episode Cody and I do a deep dive into the word Identity and why it if so important and foundational. You see - a ton of Dad gurus out there - whether it be in fitness, entrepreneurship, or whatever the case - they harp on discipline.

They say you have to be like Jocko - get up at 3:30 every morning, get a lift, be super strict with your diet, time box your day, and all the other life hacks that help drive success.

And I agree. But what Cody and I talk about today is that you can go down this road and be as disciplined as you want - but if you don’t know WHO you are - you may end up at a destination that is not supporting you or your family.

The first thing we need to do as Dads is define who we are. Cody calls this the identity code - and I am fascinated with it. It’s something that I’ve thought about at surface level, but never understood the importance of it until today’s chat.

Once you know who you are, what your values are at the deepest level - then you can chart a path to your destination and make sure that your actions align with your identity.

Guys - you are going to get so much from this conversation - I know I did.

Today we have on Braydon Barrett. Braydon is a personal fitness trainer who runs the program Look Like You Lift. Braydon was a professional.

You’ve probably seen Braydon on tiktok or instagram - he’s the guy with the long curly hair and baggy t-shirts that’s giving common sense fitness advice. You may not tell by looking - but when Braydon takes his shirt off - it’s obvious that he lifts.

He's been a competitive powerlifter, competitive strongman and once lost over 65 pounds of fat himself in 6 months - and now teaches others how to do the same without doing endless bouts of cardio, but instead focusing on core strength training, lifting weights, and getting stronger.

I absolutely love Braydon’s approach to fitness, as he brings a much needed voice of reason to the fitness industry.

Since having my son last year, I’ve been doing a ton of thinking, reading, and praying about what type of man I want him to become when he grows up.

But before I can teach him anything, I needed to understand what type of man I am? What does it even mean to be a man?

Without a clear definition and destination for what a man does, how can I raise my son to become one?

What a man does can be summarized by 3 things. A man:

1) Accepts Responsibility

2) Rejects Passivity

3) Leads Courageously

Today I’ve got Mike Dillard on the show.

Mike has been one of my entrepreneurial heroes for as long as I’ve been on this journey of creating content, building business, and understanding marketing.

He built his first 7-figure business by the age of 27, and has gone on to build three, multiple 8-figure companies with more than $60 million in combined revenue.

His podcast, the Self Made Man - later titled the Mike Dillard Podcast has had over 7 million downloads, and guests include Tony Robbins, Daymond John, Mike Rowe, Tony Hawk, and Gene Simmons.

Mike’s expertise around sales, copywriting, and scaling business has had a profound impact on my evolution as an entrepreneur. But that’s not why I wanted to have Mike on the show.

No, I wanted to sit down and talk with Mike because he is best known for his ability to predict future global trends. He purchased his first Bitcoin in 2013, built the world’s first automated hydroponic robot with Dr. Peter Diamandis in 2016, and is a private investor in innovative startups like ONNIT, Click & Grow, Opus Sound Beds, and Space X.

His next prediction? That the global global food, health, energy, and financial systems will face unprecedented challenges, leading to global conflict around the world.

During this conversation we dive deep into what is going on in our culture, in our country, and around the world, - how we should think about this as fathers and leaders, and more specifically - what we can do about it as fathers to make sure that we are protecting and providing for our family.

If you don’t know what you would do if the power grid gets shut off, or what you would do if the grocery store shuts down - this episode is for you. I hope that Mike’s teachings can open your eyes to the very real possibility of the world changing forever, very rapidly - and hope that you can have some very tactical and practical take aways that will help you be better prepared to lead your family through chaotic times.

We get super busy and stressed as dads...

It’s hard to be intentional about the way that we are showing up. We are going to fail, and fail a lot.

But when we fail, that’s another opportunity for us to be intentional in the way that we respond to that failure

Today I've got on Ryan Michler from Order of Man.

Ryan is a husband, father, Iraqi Combat Veteran, and the Founder of Order of Man. Ryan grew up without a permanent father figure and has seen first-hand how a lack of strong, ambitious, self-sufficient men has impacted society today. He believes many of the world’s most complicated problems could be solved if men everywhere learned how to be better husbands, fathers, businessmen, and community leaders. It has now become his life’s mission to help men across the planet step more fully into their roles as protectors, providers, and presiders over themselves, their families, their businesses, and their communities.

In this episode Ryan and I dive right into what it means to be a good man and a good father, and some practical things you can do today to become bolder in your beliefs and more courageous in your speech and action.

Ryan has recently gone through some pretty severe changes in his life - including struggling with alcohol and recently going through a divorce. Ryan’s not perfect - and he doesn’t pretend to be - but he is absolutely a voice of inspiration for thousands of men and fathers out there, and humbly accepts the responsibility of continuously improving and becoming a better man.

How do we broach the topic of boys with our young girls?

Girls are going to like boys. It is completely natural, and we should encourage our girls to like the right kind of boys.

But instead, more often than not, we tease and ridicule our young heroes for something that should be encouraged.

We say things like "you can't date until you're 30" or "I'm going to meet him at the door with a shotgun".

These things may seem funny and harmless - but what impact is that having on our daughter's view on boys?

Today we dive in and tackle this head on.

Today we have on Ryan King.

Ryan is a friend of mine that I met through the Apogee Strong Dads program - Ryan is a Dad, a business owner, and a thought leader when it comes to the traditional roles of fatherhood and masculinity.

Ryan has garnered a lot of attention over the past year or so on social media through his handle The Wisdom of Kings - where he posts long form, thought provoking content about how we can lead our families and fully step into our role as fathers and husbands.

This conversation was a ton of fun, with some huge takeaways - especially about how important it is to get our kids involved in sports at an early age.

Ryan credits his experiences with competitive sports as to what has driven him to be successful in the business world, founding Guardian Payments - which has led to financial freedom for him and his family by the time he was 35.

Guys - it’s hard to provide a preview for this conversation because we talked about so much and I had so many key takeaways.

You are not going to want to miss this conversation - so let’s hop in with The Wisdom of Kings himself - Ryan King.

Today we’ve got on Travis Stoetzel from The Forged Father.

Travis is a Husband, Father of 4 - soon to be 5, and Coach who specializes in helping high-achieving Ex-Athlete DADS destroy the “dad bod” and gain the edge back in their lives - but more importantly he helps dads connect deeply with their Mission, Vision, and Purpose (or their MVP) - connecting them with their “why” so that when life gets tough, as it inevitably does - dads can tap into that purpose and keep going.

Travis’s coaching group “The Forged Father” has helped hundreds of Dads get back into shape and start showing up the way they were meant to.

Travis is a CrossFit athlete, placing 7th overall in the world in the 2018 CrossFit games as a master’s athlete - and still competes today.

Travis is living his life as a clear example of what is possible as a busy Dad - I mean Travis has 4 kids, with another one on the way by the way, and still manages to kick ass in every area of his life.

If you are a Dad that feels like he has lost that edge, if you are someone that used to have that competitive drive but now feel like it’s lost, and if you are a dad that feels like he doesn’t have a clear MISSION in life, tune in because this episode is for you.

Today I have on Brian Nabavi.

Brian has been in the fitness industry for 23 years and he quit his 6 figure job as the GM of sales for a franchised gym back in 2014 and took the huge risk of pursuing business/entrepreneurship.

After losing everything, he started his business, Til You Collapse Apparel, with only $300 and worked day and night until he scaled his first company from nothing to multiple 7 figures, which is now on track to hit 8 figures, with 7 employees and growing.

Brian also helps other dads and entrepreneurs around the world get in better shape, grow their businesses and impact.

In this episode, Brian shares with us his struggles and challenges and key takeaways as a man on a mission growing a company to support his family.

This conversation was incredible - you guys are going to want to take out a notepad and jot down some notes, or if you are driving - you might want to come back and listen to this episode.

The topic of our children’s health has never been more important that it is right now. And us as Dads need to get involved.

A complicated landscape of big Pharma, profit driven companies, mis-information, dis-information, wokeness, you name it - make the topic of our kids health a tricky topic.

Should we vaccinate our kids or not, should we put our kid on ADHD medication or not, should we listen to CDC and the World Health Organization’s guidance on pediatrics or not?

It seems like you can’t trust anything right now. Since the COVID pandemic, the credibility of our medical institutions has crumbled - and things that 2 years ago were labeled as conspiracy theory are now shown as fact.

To help guide us through this important conversation - I wanted to bring on someone that I have connected with recently, and someone that I have tremendous respect for.

Dr. Stanton Hom is a prenatal and pediatric chiropractor, West Point Grad and US Army Veteran, children’s natural health advocate, owns a whole family practice in San Diego California, and host of the Future Generations Podcast. But most importantly, Stanton is a Dad.

Stanton has been one of the most outspoken critics of the CDC’s child vaccine schedule, has gotten his account banned from social media several times during the pandemic, but has refused to back down and bring light to what he believes wholeheartedly to be true.

I’m super pumped for this conversation with Stanton as we dive into how us as Dads can, and need to, take a more active role in our children’s health.

Today I have on Rod Richard from the 4 Fit Fatherhood podcast.

Rod is a former major league baseball trainer for the New York Mets, and has worked in the physical fitness and training space for all of his adult life.

But believe it or not, getting in shape is not what this episode is about.

No - when Rod had his first child he was working for the Mets as their strength and conditioning coach, and on he was the road 9 months out of the year.

Although his career path was extremely rewarding - being a road warrior was not the kind of life he knew that his new baby would need.

Since leaving the Mets, Rod has built a life with his family being priority #1, and is the host of the 4 Fit Fatherhood podcast - where he helps other dads prioritize family and have open and honest conversations about fatherhood.

Being a dad is tough - and more often than not we go at it alone - never asking questions - we just grind through the hard times.

Rod’s podcast 4 Fit fatherhood is breaking that stigma - offering a platform for us dads to get together and have those discussions - and Rod is helping thousands of men become more intentional parents.

Your PURPOSE should be different than your VISION.

Most of the time we focus on our vision, or our outcome, but then what happens when we get there?

We have a goal that we are going after, but when we accomplish that goal - we still feel like shit?

How do we go about crafting our purpose?

Our purpose is what is going to give us fulfillment, not our vision.

Today I give my thoughts on defining your purpose.

Today I sit down with Keith Yackey.

Keith is the owner of the men's coaching group "Married Game" and has helped hundreds of Dads become the most attractive version of themselves and level up their sex game in their marriage.

When we first get married, things are fresh and new, and we are still in that honeymoon phase - we’re still flirting and going out on dates, and that physical attractiveness is a big driver in our marriage.

Hence - we’re probably having sex pretty often.

But after a while, things start to change.

As husbands we get caught up in work, hobbies, and other things. And then throw some kids in the mix and man… we used to be having sex almost every night - and now you can count on one hand how many times you’ve consummated your marriage in the past 3 months…

What the heck happened? It’s not like you don’t want to have sex?

You hint at it to your wife, but get zero response.

Doesn’t she know that all this hard work you are doing is for the family?

Don’t you “deserve” to be getting some action in the bedroom?

Well - odds are if you and your wife aren’t exactly tearing it up in the sheets - she’s just not that attracted to you.

So how do we become more attractive?

Well - that’s where we turn to Keith.

Keith has helped hundreds of dads turn their relationships around, become the most attractive version of themselves, and yes… have lots more sex.

So I highly suggest breaking out a notepad for this episode, because it is chock full of useful nuggets that are going to help you reconnect emotionally with your wife, level up as a husband, up your married game, and yes - have more sex as a result.

Today I sit down with Ryan Carnohan.

Ryan is the president and head coach of the coaching program Superhuman Fathers. If you haven’t heard of Superhuman Fathers, then you are living under a rock.

They focus on helping Dads achieve their potential in all areas of their lives, and the physical transformations they deliver consistently to their clients are just ridiculous.

Now Ryan goes by the title of “the world’s greatest hype man” and has abs that would make any dad jealous - but that wasn’t always the case. Not long ago Ryan was depressed, lost, at an unhealthy weight - and had the nickname Pizza Boy…

But in a short amount of time he was able to lose the weight, get jacked, level up and is now the president of Superhuman Fathers.

Ryan and I don’t agree on everything in this episode, and that’s ok - but there is no denying that he, and Superhuman Fathers have something special going on, as they are able to deliver consistent, ridiculous results for their clients.

Today I sit down with Kevin Torres.

Kevin is a combat veteran, amazing father, and owner of Forging Elite Fathers. You guys might know him by his instagram handle DadBod_Wod.

I found Kevin on Instagram over a year ago and we have been tagging each other in posts since and I have been drenched in sweat many times by following his workouts - our messages really align about the importance of fitness to help fill your bucket as a father and I knew I had to have him on the show.

Kevin’s sustainable and simple approach to staying fit as a busy dad is what a lot of guys need to hear. You don’t need to be going to a gym for hours at a time, or going on crazy fad diets to stay fit.

A simple and sustainable approach is key - and it’s exactly what Kevin is teaching inside his coaching group Forging Elite Fathers.

During this episode Kevin and I talk about army life and the transition to becoming a civilian, his approach to fitness and nutrition (you guys are going to want to take notes on this one - trust me), how being in shape has helped him show up even better as a father, and practical steps that you as a busy dad can take now to start getting in better shape.

Life can be chaotic. Especially with young kids in the mix - and that is part of the fun.

But you need a balance between chaos and order to be most fulfilled.

Since my son was born, my mornings have been off, and I can tell a huge difference.

I've been more stressed, more reactive, more passive, and less intentional with how I want to show up.

Lately I have been getting back onto my morning routine, and the impact has been immediate and incredible.

In today's episode I share the 5 steps to my morning routine - and hope that you can pull a golden nugget out that you can use.

Regardless of whether my morning routine works for you, you NEED to have one.

Adopt something that is sustainable, and make sure you get it in everyday.

Your family can't drink from an empty cup - so make sure you are pouring into yourself first, and then go pour into your family.

Fasting is something that I have always been interested in but have never studied - and there is so much misinformation out there - so I’m super interested to jump into this episode and learn more, dispel some of the myths, separate fact from fiction - and learn how to jump start results.
