Food As Medicine is a This As That Production documentary film that follows the growing movement of using food to heal chronic illness and disease. Food As Medicine documents the journey of food, health, community and hope. Soon to be released on Food Matters TV, this film includes interviews with The Paleo Mom, Terry Wahls MD, Mickey Trescott of Autoimmune Paleo, Dr. Julie Briley, Naturopathic Doctor and Courtney Jackson, ND of Food As Medicine Institute. From Lenore Eklund's personal healing, inspiration grew to create a positive film about people addressing disease with food. There are a lot of negative messages about the state of our nation’s health and diet, and they were inspired by the community of people they found who are fighting back against this downward trend. Food As Medicine wants to reach people who are dealing with disease and don’t know where to start in terms of addressing it through lifestyle changes and inspire them with real stories.
The Center for Disease Control reports that nearly half the population in the United States of America lives with at least one chronic disease. These diseases are the leading cause of death and disability and are the most costly and most preventable of all health conditions in the country.
It is imperative that we start changing our food culture now. Food As Medicine follows the growing movement of using food to heal chronic disease. From individuals empowering themselves to change what is on their plates to hospital groups administering vegetable Rx programs, we can already see the change happening around us.

Welcome to Episode 68 of the Born Primal Show (listen here!) In this special edition of the show, I share my 3 tips for stress management. Grab a copy of the FREE Guide to Eating for Stress Management: THE STRESS LESS DIET while you listen to the show.
ARE YOU MANAGING YOUR STRESS OR IS IT MANAGING YOU? While there is no such thing as "stress-free" living, we don't have to buy into our culture's idea of stress as a status symbol. STRESS is inevitable. Your relationship with it determines your well-being.
WHAT IF being busy and having a full life doesn't have to be run by mismanaged stress? With these 3 stress management tips, you can have peace and happiness in the life you already live without letting stress manage you!
Stress Management Tip #1: Meditate *BE STILL AND BREATHE*
Meditation is hard! At least that's what I used to think. Out of desperation, I gave it a chance. What happened was remarkable. A few minutes of practicing quiet each day gave me the peace I had spent a lifetime searching for. That's why meditation is my first step in managing stress.
How To Meditate:
Find a quiet place where you can be undisturbed for 5-10 minutes.
Use an app like Headspace or 10% Happier to teach you how to meditate or set a timer for 10 minutes and focus on your breath. Don't worry if self-talk happens the whole time. Come back to the breath as many times as needed.
Remember that it's a PRACTICE! Eventually, quieting your thoughts will become easier, but the practice is what brings the peace and will manage your stress.
Stress Management Tip #2: Simplify DOWNSIZE YOUR LIFE
Make a mental list of all the things that fill your day. Find one thing you can remove to simplify your life.
Exercise Less
Against popular belief, more exercise is not beneficial. Don't exercise harder. Exercise smarter! Go one step further and use your new found free time for play and walking. Fitness and stress management all in one!
**Batch Cook**
If making dinner daily is stressing you out, spend a couple of hours on a weekend day making all of your meals for the week. That's a huge burden off your shoulders when 6pm rolls around after a busy day! To find out more about meal planning download my free copy of The Stress Less Diet: A Guide to Eating for Stress Management.
Disconnect
It goes without saying that as a culture we are over-connected to our devices. Social media is a wonderful way to connect with friends and family, but it can create stress. It's not realistic to ignore that part of our lives, but we can take breaks and reset our relationship with our devices.
Stress Management Tip #3: Boundaries SET THEM AND HOLD ON TIGHT
Start saying NO to others and YES to you. Some of the most stressed out people are struggling with boundary setting.
**Make Self-Care A Priority**
You can't be there for anyone else if you're not there for yourself.
Be Independent--Not Codependent
There's a saying: "Sweep your side of the street." That means that other people's problems are not yours so don't take them on.
Practice Acceptance
Allow people to be where they are on their life. Boundaries don't mean judgment. Accepting that people are where they are means that you can be kind and empathetic, while holding your boundary close.
NOW YOU'RE READY TO MANAGE YOUR STRESS! Stay tuned for more tips on MANAGING YOUR STRESS in the near future. Connect with me online and share this with your friends. Listen to the podcast for more tips...
This week I've invited two of my fellow Nutritional Therapy Practitioners, Amy Love of Real Food Whole Health and Aimee Lecointre of The Nourished Breath, to join me for a roundtable discussion on the following topics:
1- Acid Reflux, GERD, and the latest findings
2- Inflammation
3- Vitamin D, Sunshine, Safe Sunscreens, and Movement
Amy Love is a certified nutritional therapy practitioner, a natural fertility support specialist and is a certified GAPS practitioner, having trained directly with Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. Amy also practices Meridian Autonomic Testing. A co-creator of the “Essential Six Elements for Whole Health“, she also brings background knowledge of massage therapy and related modalities, energy healing and inspired life consulting to her nutritional therapy practice. Amy is a certified professional life coach with a focus on holistic health and wellness and she has experience as a doula (birth assistant). With a passion for self and family wellness on all levels- physical, mental, emotional and spiritual- Amy offers support for the whole family with a special emphasis on digestive wellness (and the GAPS diet), natural fertility, pregnancy and post-partum care.
Aimee Lecointre is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, specializing in digestive health, because she's spent her entire life dealing with digestive issues (related to cystic fibrosis) and conventional medicine never helped. At only two weeks of age she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) a genetic, chronic, life threatening disease. Between the digestive issues associated with CF, much needed antibiotics to fight life threatening infections, constant stress, and a lack of research regarding CF and nutrition she took it into her own hands to see how food and nutrition could improve her quality of life.
Now, it's her mission, and her passion, to help other individuals with cystic fibrosis, and other digestive disorders, take their health into their own hands (along side their professional treatment teams) to improve the quality of their lives through simple dietary and lifestyle changes. As an NTP, she understands that there is no one diet that works for everyone.

Nat Geo Channel's The Great Human Race returns to BORN PRIMAL this week with co-star, Cat Bigney! Two weeks ago, Dr. Bill Schindler had a conversation with us about his part in this experiment. Today, Cat joins us to talk about her experience traveling the globe reenacting early man's life.
Cat spent most of her childhood hanging out in a teepee and exploring the Wasatch Mountains. She later spent a portion of her college years in the shack she built in her youth, accompanied by chickens and a flood-irrigated garden.
Her atypical background and love for the wilderness led her to Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS), where she has worked as a survival and primitive skills instructor since 2000. She has extensive remote medical training and instructs for the Wilderness Medical Institute of NOLS. Cat has a degree in Anthropology and Earth Sciences, and is passionate about primitive cultures, especially when it comes to art and social infrastructure.
She is driven by her desire to connect with people and encourage them to truly live. She wants to be a positive influence for girls and women, not only in the outdoor arena, but to also dare to be themselves, to be different and to take risks to achieve their dreams.
In The Great Human Race they must survive in the harshest locations ever occupied by ancient humans, and utilize only the tools and technology available to people in a predetermined time period. They encounter the same challenges that our ancestors once faced, and overcome them in a similar fashion – by adapting their technology and behavior, and in essence, evolving throughout the course of an episode. The big question to be answered is “Can modern humans survive in the same way primitive humans did?” Each episode takes them to a new location. They are placed in a specific time period and follow a migration route that our ancestors travelled in pursuit of food and resources.
SHOW TOPICS:
Entitlement culture
Food in our society
Accountability in plant-based diets
Considering sustainable models for our offspring
Girl empowerment

How we can connect deeper to our primal selves

Three of my fellow Nutritional Therapy Practitioners join me for a roundtable discussion on the following topics:
Daniele Della Valle is an NTP based in Vancouver WA. Her private practice works primarily in hormone rebalancing and auto immune disease and weight management. She is a ketogenic specialist, teaching workshops in the Portland/Vancouver area. She lives with her husband on a 2.5 acre homestead, where they grow their own food. Daniele is also a brand Ambassador for Suja juice and an aspiring author. Her first book is set to release later this year.
Meredith Kinsel-Ziter is a Certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and is Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition. She instructs for the Nutritional Therapy Association and maintains a thriving private practice, working with chronically ill clients so that they can buck the tyranny of symptoms and own their lives again.
Meredith helps clients navigate the path to healing with modern technologies that consider the roles that our genetics and bacterial make-up may play, while also holding a deep appreciation for therapies and ideas that modern science has not yet been able to explain. She is a passionate scientist, amateur naturalist, and human-lover.
Jim Eaton is a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who struggled for many years with anxiety, depression, and generally feeling bad most of the time. After overcoming his own struggles using an ancestral template lifestyle, he now offers his services to others who are ready to see positive change in their lives.
Jim provides one on one nutrition counseling, as well as group talks to organizations big & small interested in learning how to use food to promote good health. He is especially passionate about helping those who suffer from mental health issues find peace in their mind, body, and spirit.

A teenager who of his own accord figured out how to chance his life. He lost over 100 pounds at 15 years old. But that wasn't enough. Joshua has taken his journey to the next level by blogging at Slim Palate and putting together this tremendous cookbook, The Slim Palate Paleo Cookbook. Almost 19 years ago I walked into a radio station with a dream. I was fortunate to fulfill that dream and left radio a few years ago but have continued to work as a voice actor. Over time I realized that being a DJ wasn't fulfilling for me. A year ago I decided to embark on a new adventure and find a career doing what I loved. Teaching others about living a healthier life. I've spent the last 9 months studying with the Nutritional Therapy Association. Studying nutrition has taught me that what I really want to do is talk to people about the things I love. That's why I created Born Primal. A place to gather with people who inspire me, people who I believe have a message to share with others. This isn't a podcast just for nutrition though. It's about all aspects of living this unique lifestyle. Sleep, movement, relationships, parenting, ancestral life...the list goes on.
