Jesus uses strong words, but his message is simple: limit the things that make gospel living harder, have holy boundaries, and when it comes to knowing who’s with us or not, “whoever is not against us is for us.”

There’s no getting ahead in the Christian life. Each of us is dependent, called to disciple like a child, open to life as it unfolds and trusting that God is with us, taking care of us. by Sister Leslie Keener, CDP

Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say I am?” and it’s clear that he wants them to know him for who he is. There’s something about all of us that wants to be understood, isn’t there? Ultimately, we want to be loved, but to be loved, we also have to be known.

This week we encounter Jesus as he heals a deaf person with the words, “Be opened.” His invitation to openness shows that the problem isn’t an illness that can be cured but a closedness that can opened. How open are you when it comes to speaking your truth? When it comes to listening to others? How open is your heart?

Jesus is calling us to alignment between our attitudes and our actions, an authentic living out of our faith. He's interested in transforming the whole of us, and if we’re open, we allow that transformation to happen, just as it happened to him.

Whether we stay or go, God is still with us. Christ accompanies us, and we accompany Christ in the company of each other. Yes, sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes we don’t want to persevere, but somehow, by the grace of God, we do. How could we not? To whom shall we go?

What if instead of wondering if someone is worthy, we focus on being humble, knowing that we’re not perfect either? What if we live with patience, trusting that we’re all just doing the best we can? What if we were to bear with each other in love instead of judgement? And what if we didn’t even judge our own worthiness? Because why should we? God doesn’t.

There’s a lot going on in this Gospel, and the quick pace makes it seem like Jesus’s life is an action-packed adventure with lots of people who need help. Are these events just part of a busy day in the life of Jesus? These encounters have much to tell us about the healing ministry of Jesus – for those in the story and for us too.

Palm Sunday shows us the extremes of human experiences as Jesus is celebrated but then betrayed, condemned, and executed. We see how fast things can change – in this Passion story and in our own lives too. However, through all of life’s joys and sorrows, we can trust that God is with us. And when the intensity of it all feels like too much to hold, God holds us.
To hear the Passion Story read aloud, check out last year's Palm Sunday episode: A Parade, a Kiss, a Conviction, and a Cross,

Having a troubled heart is a human experience. It comes from looking darkness in the face and moving into it despite how hard it is. Jesus might not have known how things would work out, but he knew that he could trust the unknown future to a loving God. And so can we.

In these days of burnout, fatigue, and loneliness, how do we resist the temptation to try to be all things to all people? How do we trust that we’re enough because God made us to be enough?

I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember the last time I was astonished by something Christ said or did – in Scripture or in my life. But I want to feel amazed again! How do I open myself to astonishment, awe, wonder?

The invitation of this feast of the Holy Family is to celebrate the family of Jesus as well as our own families — our biological and/or chosen ones. We also lift up the wide family of God, the human family of which we’re all a part. Maybe we didn’t choose each other, but we belong to each other anyway.
Merry Christmas from all of us at God Space!

In our Gospel, the shepherds hasten to the manger to behold the Christ child. It’s a beautiful, idyllic scene. However, we can learn a lot if we reflect on this scene more deeply, making real the image we often see on Christmas cards. How did those shepherds respond to the invitation to go and see the Christ, and how are we called to respond this Christmas as well?

It seems that Christ the King is not your average king, and he may even be a better shepherd than he is a king. He’s near to all in need and tells us to move toward them as well. In fact, he tells us that we will find him when we move to the margins and encounter vulnerable people. We may even meet Christ when we ourselves feel vulnerable.

God doesn’t ask us to deny our heartbreaks, but God does want to protect us from the further harm that comes from ruminating on negativity. Life brings hard things, but it also offers things which are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious, excellent, and worthy of praise. What if we spend some of our prayer reflecting on the good in our lives and some of it sharing the difficult things with God? “Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard [our] hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

There are no spiritual life hacks into the Kingdom of God. It's something we work to build bit by bit, something that emerges from within us as we keep growing in the spiritual life. God loves us as we are and invites us to be more. In God’s invitation, there will likely be a little bit of challenge, and that’s okay. Challenge is how we grow. Someday we’ll look back and see how far we’ve come.

I’ve heard people say that questioning is okay but doubting is wrong, but I think questioning is okay and doubting is okay too. God doesn’t seem to mind when we doubt. In fact, doubt can be an opening for God to come closer and show us God’s love and care; it can be a means to transformation.

Darkness and light are neither good nor bad; they’re both parts of the whole. We can’t consider suffering apart from resurrection, and we can only enter into resurrection joy while bearing the experience of suffering. Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death and resurrection? Christ is with us in darkness and light.

To hear the Passion Story read aloud, check out last year's Palm Sunday episode: AParade, a Kiss, a Conviction, and a Cross,

Why is important to hold a space for our grief, sorrow, and pain — especially if we’d rather look away or just go about our lives as if those emotions weren’t there? Because, despite their difficulty, our struggles give God a chance to show us God’s love and to show us that we have cause to hope. And we do have cause to hope. Maybe hope is what God’s glory feels like.

Love and holiness move us beyond civility to something deeper, and that’s a good thing, even if it brings with it a healthy dose of discomfort from time to time. The love that the Gospel calls us to is a holy, gritty kind of love that encompasses neighbors and enemies, as well as ourselves.

On this day, which is so often a time of making resolutions, there’s an invitation to consider God’s call for us too — because Mary of Nazareth is not the last person God invited to do a thing, and God is calling forth a courageous yes in us too. God has continued to call people to bring about God’s kingdom, which upends corrupt power and uplifts the vulnerable, and God is calling us to this great work too. What will your yes be?

Happy New Year!

The birth of the vulnerable, needy Christ child is a profound, important sign that God has given humanity. God became finite and shows us infinite love; God became needy and shows us God’s Providence; God became poor and shows us abundance.

I find hope in the fact that hard times will come to an end. Nothing is permanent. Anyone who’s truly living their vocation, religious, single, and married people, know both love and endurance. And there’s something about sisters who tend to move toward service. In big and little ways, we keep on keeping on. We align ourselves with discomfort and lean into uncertainty and sometimes even run toward danger. In all that we run to and embrace, endure and uplift, we do it for love of people and love of God.

For reflection:
This reading from the Book of Wisdom can take us pretty deep into the mystery of God and the paradox of God — that God is both infinite and intimate. God holds the universe and all things in it; the magnitude of God is unimaginable. And yet, God is within each one of us and knows us personally. God is the Creator of all, and God is knit deeply within each one of us.

God wants us as we are. No bravado, no chest beating and discarding our own worth. God receives us – all that we are, our past, our present, our brokenness and giftedness — the whole of each of us. God loves us however we show up. And God always shows up for us.

What an image of leadership – Moses so visibly present on the hill with his hands raised and two of his community members on either side offering support. It seems like a lot of us could benefit from this kind of leadership, especially during these times of transition. We’re no longer what we have been, but we don’t know what we’re becoming. How will we get through this? How are our leaders leading, and how do we support each other as community? And where is God in all this?

Prophets comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable, and maybe that's what our prophets are doing -- afflicting us until we shift our expectations and attitudes. Attitude shifts are often uncomfortable for me, but that’s okay. A little discomfort never hurt me and, in fact, sometimes it helps me to grow.

Trust is a risk we take. It can lead to heartbreak, sure, but it also brings about deeper intimacy and connection. When we risk a little vulnerability, we see that someone is trustworthy, and so we can risk again. Eventually, each little moment can add up to a deeper relationship and an abiding trust with other people and with God.

Does prayer make you more compassionate, thoughtful, understanding of other people? Does it help you to remember God’s love in the past and to experience it in the present? It does that for me. When I truly open myself, prayer reminds me of how often God has come to find me when I’ve wandered off. It reminds me of God’s grace and mercy, unasked for but abundantly given, and it makes me extend grace to others a little more freely too.

The Holy Spirit is what brings together the most unlikely people and unites us as community, even through our many differences, and helps us to hold that paradox of oneness and diversity. The Spirit doesn’t ask us to conform so we’re all alike, but it does help us to communicate through the different languages we may speak.

The Feast of the Ascension shows us is that the revelation of Christ in the world, even amidst all of this sorrow, is up to us. The presence of Christ crucified and risen is within each one of us. That’s where God is in all of this. Not waving good bye from above, but generating hope from within us -- hope that we proclaim.

Understanding mission as a project feels helpful, at least to me. Being assigned a project is far less daunting than being sent on a mission. Mission inspires me, but it also overwhelms me. A project is doable, one step at a time.

Have you ever had an experience that touched your heart and changed your life? Well, here's one. The Providence Project is a summer service program in Mosses, Alabama. Young adult volunteers live together in community with Sisters of Divine Providence and work with children in an educational summer camp. We’ll build in time for community, prayer, and, of course, fun! We’ll also visit some of the historical sites in Selma and Montgomery, Alabama to learn more about the civil rights movement and racial justice in our own time.
This podcast features a conversation about what the Providence Project entails and what to expect. To watch the video and see the pictures we're talking about, you can go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Fdw7NzGMSk
For more info, you can email Sister Leslie at vocation@cdpkentucky.org or visit here: https://www.godspacecommunity.com/providenceproject

The dates for summer camp are June 5—June 17 or July 3—July 15, 2022 — volunteers can pick which dates work best for them. We welcome volunteers of all genders (even though the podcast specifies women.)
Do something fun and meaningful this summer -- meet cool people, do some good, and nurture your spirit.
Blessed Good Friday. This Way of the Cross prayer is a kind of pilgrimage, a way of connecting the suffering of Jesus with the suffering brought about by injustice in our day.
If you’re joining the pilgrimage in person in downtown Cincinnati, you can use this podcast to pray as you go. You’ll need the written program as a guide along the way to know which stop along the Cincinnati Bell Connector to use.
If you’re not local or not free to come and pray at the time of the prayer, that’s fine too. You can use the podcast to pray along and move through the pilgrimage wherever you are. You can follow along with a written program here or you’re welcome to just listen.
We appreciate your support, and if you’d like to support the Way of the Cross for Justice financially, you can send a text message and receive a text back with the donation link. Just text “cross” to 844-403-2211 to receive a link to our donation page. Thank you in advance for your support.
If you’d like to connect with this event and support it in the future or help to plan it, you can contact Sister Leslie at Godspace@godspacecommuity.com or Allison Reynolds-Berry at allison@ijpccincinnati.org and we can talk more about how you’d like to connect.

Palm Sunday and Holy Week may offer us an opportunity to be with our own suffering and joy, hurt and healing, betrayal and forgiveness, loneliness and connection. As we move through these sacred days, we may see how, as we enter into the Passion of Jesus, Christ has entered into our own passion too, this life we’re living, day by day and year by year.
For Reflection:
What parts of the Passion story touch you the most? What is it about these parts that resonates with your life? What is God saying to you through the connections you make with this story and your own story?
Have you ever been betrayed or hurt very deeply? Were you able to heal? How? And where was God in that experience?
What do you most hope for at this time? Where do you need new life to enter into your life?

As we bear the crosses in our own lives, we may have to dig down deep to find hope, but resurrection is on its way. God makes all things new.
For God, no one is insignificant and everyone is worth finding. No one is beyond reach; no one is irredeemable. The so-called sinners that Jesus hangs out with, well, they’re not so bad either. Maybe they’re just a little lost.
Brokenness is real, but it is redeemable. As community, we can bring our woundednesstogether, owning our incompleteness, and drawing near each other. God is present when we come together in our brokenness, God who has chosen to be vulnerable too.
We stay open to what comes, enjoying the heights, living into the depths, and being present to where God is moment by moment, even when the ground is just . . . level.
The call I hear is to try and recognize what leads me: is it the Spirit of God or something else? If it’s the Spirit, then I am on the way toward God and toward good. If what is leading me is not of God, then I can always change directions.
We each have the ability to produce good fruit, to act out of the goodness – the God-ness – inside of us. But we also have it in us to act out of what’s not of God. My decision to do good, to move in the direction of the Spirit, (or not) reflects on who I am as a person.
We are lavishly loved and blessed. What we put out into the world may have a cause and effect dynamic, or it may not. However, the more good we do, the more we become people who do good, and the more we become magnanimous, like God is.
God calls us to keep moving toward trust in God and relationship with God. Sometimes we do that when we notice our blessings, and sometimes we even grow stronger roots during the hard times. Maybe growth in hard times is a blessing too.
Our mission as Christians is not about success and numbers. It’s about following Christ. That’s not usually easy. On the other hand, discipleship promises unexpected abundance, a life of community and communion with God, and witnessing God’s slow but sure reconciling of all things.
Jeremiah and Jesus are pretty clear about God's will for them, but it can be harder for us to figure that out. How do we discern God's call for us, and what do we do when other people in our lives feel the need to weigh in?
God has cared for us by designing our bodies in such a way that our most vulnerable body parts are protected; could we care for the Body of Christ in the same way?
This Sunday's reading from First Corinthians tells us that "there are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit," and that sounds very nice. However, how does this actually manifest in communities and families? Do we really affirm the gifts in each each other? Do we appreciate our own gifts? Let's reflect on all this a little more deeply . . .
Each time the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord comes around, we hear this invitation to see ourselves mirrored in Christ, in all of Christ’s belovedness. Each time we have an opportunity to trust a little more deeply, not in ourselves, but in God’s profound and grace-filled love for us.
Like the Magi, we have each other as travel companions, standing together beneath the night sky, gazing at signs from God, and following where they lead. Let’s use our wit, as well as our energy, vision, and desire for God, to move forward as one.
None of our families is ideal, and each of them is holy. Our broken and imperfect families, our grieving families, our struggling families are holy in our striving, not in our perfection. It’s God who makes us holy.
4th Sunday of Advent: Prophets don’t predict the future. They speak a word of hope. God keeps making promises, and when those are fulfilled, God makes more promises. Blessed are we who believe.
God is near, and the peace of God will guard us, even when we feel anxious. Gaudete Sunday, 2021 Phil 4:4-7
Our prophet’s vision is not a false peace, but a genuine end to the oppression that held people captive, a real gathering of community, and a life of peace and justice together. Many of us long for this in our day too, and those who long for the peace of justice are likely also called to work for it. How can we make the way easier for each other?
In this season of hope, God promises to be with us, and this promise is being fulfilled right now.
As we elevate this simple but divine man from Galilee, I hope we don’t lose sight of the point he’s trying to make in this Gospel – that we belong to Christ and we belong to the Kingdom of God that we’re living into now.
Welcome to National Vocation Awareness Week. We can think about our vocation as our call from God to love in the world. God calls each of us as Christians to love, and the way each one of us loves is not in general but in particular. God calls us to love in the way that also makes each one of us happy. Religious life is a pretty unique calling. It’s somewhat rare, although God is definitely still calling people to this vocation. Because it’s unique, not as many people know much about religious life. So this week, we’re going to tell you all about it. What we have for you in this podcast episode are some of our sisters sharing their thoughts about why they love being Sisters of Divine Providence so much. You’ll enjoy these reflections and, hopefully, be inspired too. And if you still want to know more, if you yourself might be wondering if God is calling you to religious life, or if you are seriously discerning it, we’ll have a question and answer conversation on zoom on November 21 at 4 PM. It will be just like you’re sitting here in the living room with us chatting about life and God and love and service. It’ll be great, so we hope you join us. You can sign up here: https://tinyurl.com/QAwithSisters And if you feel like God might be calling you to explore a vocation to religious life, let me know and we can have a conversation about it. Email Sister Leslie at vocation@CDPKentucky.org. However God is calling you to love and serve, may you know always God’s love for you.

Jesus uses the meager contribution of a poor widow to show what it looks like to give out of your whole livelihood. How are you living into this? How is God calling you to give all with generosity and trust?
In this culture that glorifies busyness to the point of burnout, how do we follow God's commandments to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength? How do we love our neighbors, and how do we love ourselves?
On this 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we get to spend some time with Bartimaeus. What can we learn from this disciple’s encounter with Jesus, and how would you answer Jesus’s question: “What do you want me to do for you?”
The readings for this 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time contrast leaders who lord power over people and Jesus, who is deeply with people. I’ll also reference Brené Brown and what she has to say about power with versus power over. You can find out more about that at her website, brenebrown.com.
Our rich friend in the Gospel has all the privilege in the world. Do you think he’ll be able to lay aside that privilege and follow Jesus? I think he can. Discipleship is not something we achieve on our own but with God’s help, our God who makes all things possible.
This Sunday’s readings call us to care for each other. Like Christ who enters intimately into our lives and loves deeply and expansively, may we move toward each other in love and mutual compassion.
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus uses strong words to help us to cut out of our lives the things that cause sin and distress in order to open ourselves to growth, freedom, and God.
In this podcast, we’ll reflect on the readings for Sunday, September 19th, the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Following Jesus doesn’t make people less annoying, but it does call us to put other people before ourselves. It also calls us to recognize that we are not self-sufficient; we need God and each other. You can find the Lectionary readings here: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/091921.cfm
What does it mean to be hospitable, and why is it important to do so? In this episode we’ll reflect together on the story of Abraham and his angelic visitors. We’ll reflect on how Abraham offers hospitality and hopefully hear a call from God ourselves to offer a generous welcome to others.
The Providence Podcast is offered by God Space, a ministry of the Sisters of Divine Providence of Kentucky. On our podcast, we’ll offer Scripture reflections, prayer opportunities, interviews, and lots of other ways to help you connect and deepen your spirituality. Thanks for being here!
