Aga Grabowski of Wildflower Center for Emotional Health and I have had many lovely conversations over the years about creating a culture of compassion within our organizations and within the broader community of maternal health providers in Chicago.

In this, the second of a 2 -part episode, I continue my conversation with Aga about where love fits in the healing relationship. We explore what can go wrong in an exchange between provider and patient as we look at the anatomy of childbirth trauma, and on the flip side, what makes for the ‘magic’ that heals when Aga shares one of mothering’s heartbreaking moments, and how compassion and fearlessness conveyed by a nurse transformed a moment of terror into something quite beautiful that will last with her forever.

Join us to explore the power of presence and what makes not just for a great therapist, but why all health care professionals have the potential to be great healers.

I can’t think of a better topic to launch our podcast than talking about love, with a capital 'L.'

I’m Karen Laing and I’ve been bringing love into my work for decades.

My mission is to help us all take better care of one another, without burning out, shutting down, or losing sight of our common humanity.

In our first 2 episodes, we’ll be talking to Aga Grabowski, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist who has co-founded Wildflower Center for Emotional Health in Chicago. Aga supports and supervises her team of more than 20 clinicians in cultivating the qualities that make the therapeutic alliance come alive.

She creates what Sandra Bloom describes as a sanctuary for healing, where the home of the practice becomes the ground of basic sanity that makes healing possible.

This conversation moves well beyond the field of mental health, as we discuss the practice of being with suffering, with full engagement and unconditional acceptance, and other key ingredients in the recipe for connections that bring healing for both the client and the practitioner.

In our first episode, Aga talks about the spirit of healing, dare we say the magic of the healing relationship, how she cultivates it and what she gains by the practice of presence in the therapeutic alliance. We discuss her work with new graduates, and ask: Can we teach the qualities of compassion? Authenticity? Presence? Unconditional love?
