The Messy Reformation: Recent Episodes

We love the Christian Reformed Church; we want to see reformation in our denomination; and we recognize that reformation is typically messy. So, we’re having conversations with pastors throughout the CRC about what reformation might look like.
Recorded in May 2022, weeks before Synod 2022. First of three reruns in the Before We Knew series, pulled from the years before the CRCNA's direction was settled.
A solo episode. Jason works through the fear of the Pharisees — Matthew 21:45-46, Mark 11:18, Luke 22:1-2 — where the religious leaders intend to arrest and kill Jesus and hold back because they fear the crowds. He applies it to the delegates heading to synod, alongside 1 Corinthians 16:13: be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
He then describes his own fear. He shakes when he speaks up in a group. A year or two into ministry as a youth pastor, he sat through a contentious congregational meeting, disagreed with where it was going, and said nothing, because he was afraid of what speaking would cost his position and his relationships. He drove home resolved never to do it again. The definition of courage follows: not the absence of fear, but fearing God more than men and moving forward anyway.
The second half takes up the arguments circulating before synod — fear of damage, fear of disunity, fear of a rash decision. He names delay as a tactic rather than caution, argues that smaller forces stretch out a fight when they know the numbers are against them, and holds that the majority in the pews were orthodox on sexuality. He cites the Chesterton line that a soldier fights for what is behind him rather than against what is in front of him, and lists what he longs for: a denomination he is not ashamed of, one that disciplines false teaching, that hires people worth being excited about, that is known for standing firm.
He closes on 1 Corinthians 15:10 — Paul working harder than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God — and argues that courage comes through faith rather than from within. The episode ends with Acts 20:22-24 adapted to synod: going constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what waits, counting his life of no value if only he may finish the course.

If Synod's new ten-year church-planting vision is going to mean anything, it has to land somewhere ordinary: in one Christian noticing another. Part 2 of our conversation with Ralph Wigboldus starts exactly there. Asked how a small, tired congregation actually begins to raise up leaders, Ralph is refreshingly concrete. Stop living in silos. Don't be afraid to cross the room and talk to someone thirty or forty years younger than you. Discipleship happens with people you know.
Willy grounds it in his own story, and Ralph answers with a testimony that shows why he's Reformed to the bone: after a season of rebellion, angry at God, others could have written him off, but it was God who held on to me, not the other way around. From there the conversation turns to two of Synod's harder debates, the WCRC decision and the question of whether a digital-only ministry is a church, and to Ralph's conviction that in an anxious, disconnected world the church's calling is to draw people out to embodied community.
What carries the episode is why Ralph came home so full. After everything, he's still very much in love with this denomination. Synod felt like a family reunion. He closes with a charge for a hardening culture: in Canada a new law could brand Scripture as hate speech, and he and his co-pastor won't turn off the livestream to stay safe. Christ's work is not near finished, so speak boldly and share the gospel in love.

Ralph Wigboldus has been in the boiling water longer than most of us. A senior pastor in Woodstock, Ontario, and a six-year veteran of the Council of Delegates, he came to Synod 2026 tired and half-hoping someone else would carry the load. He left overjoyed. In Part 1 of our conversation, Ralph gives American listeners something they rarely hear clearly: the Canadian side of the last decade, from the fight over financial autonomy to the push for a separate, more progressive denomination that finally fell flat.
This is the encouraging episode. Where 2022 and 2023 felt like trench warfare, Ralph describes a Synod marked by mutual love and respect, disagreement handled with grace. He walks us through his advisory committee's work on Resonate's ten-year church-planting plan and what struck him most: this wasn't pitched as a gimmick to arrest decline, but as the plain mission of the church, regardless of the numbers.
Under it all runs the refrain we've carried for two years now: the CRC is moving out of the fight stage of this Reformation and into the build stage. Ralph reaches back to the Reformation itself, and to Calvin's Geneva as a nursery for church planters, to make the point. By the end the denominational vision has come home to a single sentence: it's on us. Part 1 leaves us right on the edge of the practical question we take up next.

In the second half of our post-Synod conversation, Zack Flipse and Jason move from how Synod 2026 felt to what it means for the work ahead. There's encouragement, but there are also some concerns. The biggest thread here is a worry both share: the CRC has an exciting church planting vision, but plant churches poorly and you can do damage to the denomination. Reformation isn't just about doing more; it's about doing it in a way that fits our ecclesiology. That's why Zack keeps half-joking that we need a study committee on ecclesiology, and why he's unembarrassed to say it: "I want to be part of a denomination that's doing theology."
From there the conversation ranges widely. They name the three streams of the CRC—confessionalist, pietist, transformationalist—and make the case that the church is stronger for holding all three. They look ahead to the Christian nationalism study report, arguing the Dutch Reformed tradition is uniquely equipped to speak here, with Kuyper and Bavinck in our own lineage—so long as we actually do the theology rather than just point back to it. And they return to Jason's hobby horse since day one: a denomination is healthy when local churches are engaged, not when they outsource their convictions to Grand Rapids.
Zack shares the kids' Heidelberg Catechism project he makes with his daughters—question one, "What gives you comfort? That I belong to Jesus"—because instead of complaining that the resource didn't exist, he decided to build it. Then Jason gives him the final word, and Zack delivers the line that names the whole vision: "Figure out what you can do to plant a church so that more people worship Jesus tomorrow than worship Him today. Let's plant some churches."

Zack Flipse walked into Synod 2026 as a first-time delegate and came home energized. For anyone who remembers the synods of 2022 and 2023—the walkouts, the exhaustion, the open question of whether the CRCNA would survive—that's no small thing. In this first half of our post-Synod conversation, Zack and Jason compare notes across a few short but seismic years: from a denomination that felt like it might die to one that is, in Zack's words, finally "rowing in the same direction." This is the encouraging episode.
Zack served on the Committee for Education and Candidacy, and he walks us through the reports, the new seminary professor, and the candidates—double last year's number—who got a standing ovation on the floor. The two of them dig into the slow, hard work of rebuilding trust in institutions, why low trust isn't a uniquely CRC problem, and the sober math behind the 150-churches-in-three-years vision: a pastor shortage that demands we get serious about raising up leaders.

Part two of the recap opens with a quieter decision that says a lot: removing Our World Belongs to God from the Covenant for Office Bearers. As Willy explains, the real debate wasn't about the contemporary testimony's merits but about what an office bearer should be bound to — and Synod's answer was the ecumenical creeds and the Reformed confessions, nothing added. It's one more thread in a confessionalist turn that ran through the whole week, captured by a transformationalist on the floor who joked that the confessionalists are in the driver's seat, the pietists are riding shotgun, and the transformationalists are in the back seat — and said he was okay with that.
From there Jason and Willy celebrate two structural decisions: keeping Sunday as a real Sabbath in the middle of Synod, and decisively rejecting biennial synods. Willy, who sits on the COD and voted against the biennial proposal, says the lopsided voice vote shows the task force is out of touch with the denomination. Jason makes the deeper case for meeting yearly — this year delegates actually changed their votes mid-debate, which is what real deliberation looks like and exactly what gets lost when a church only gathers every two years.
The heart of the episode is the unanimously adopted ten-year church planting vision and the Saturday-night State of the Church address that set it up. Jason, no reliable fan of Zach King, offers a genuine correction: King earned his standing ovation, naming a pivot from a season of fighting into a season of building — an Antioch moment of discipleship, leadership development, and healthy church planting. The goal is concrete and audacious: 150 new churches in five years, about three per classis. Both hosts ground it in the pastor shortage and the hard work of legacy churches, but the encouragement is unmistakable. Double the candidates showed up this year. Young confessional men are coming. So stop waiting on the denomination, Jason says — do the work, grassroots.

Jason and Willy are back with their annual post-Synod recap, and the mood is different than it used to be. This isn't a denomination bracing for a fight; it's one taking stock of how far it has come. Willy is relatively satisfied with Synod 2026 — a give-and-take week with real wins and real losses — and Jason agrees, framing his disappointments as wisdom calls rather than make-or-break ones. The throughline this year, borrowing a line from Derek Buikema, was a willingness to stop deferring everything to process and just make decisions now.
The biggest win is the virtual church decision. After leaving the door cracked last year, Synod acceded to the Atlantic Northeast overture and declared plainly that a church meeting exclusively online is not a true church — rooted in Acts and the Belgic Confession, and framed well by Chad Steenwyk as chair. The biggest loss is the Classis Wisconsin overture for a study committee on Reformed ecclesiology, which failed 106 to 71. Jason's frustration isn't the defeat but the reason: the whole debate collapsed into a conversation about money and pragmatism — the very disease the overture was trying to treat. His verdict on the leading floor argument is unprintable-adjacent: it sounds good, but it's crap.
The episode closes on the two-year Christian nationalism study committee. Both hosts are skeptical, not because the issue is unimportant but because nobody can define the term — a point Al Mohler recently made by calling it a rebrand of "fundamentalist." Jason is genuinely thankful Synod refused the overture's proposed definition, but he expects two years of study to produce a definition that helps no one. What stings most is the contrast: a committee for the buzzword, none for the root issue. So the Messy Reformation will do the ecclesiology work itself — grassroots.

Chris Ganski and Derek Buikema join Jason to talk about the overture out of Classis Wisconsin to Synod 2026 calling for a study committee on the nature of the church. It is not a flashy overture. It is not addressing a fight. But Chris and Derek argue it might be the most important overture on the floor — because every other ecclesiastical conversation in the denomination right now is happening at one or two levels of abstraction away from a question we have quietly stopped asking out loud: what is a church? They trace the overture back through ten years of the company-of-pastors conversations, name the drift of American pragmatism through CRC life, and make the case that a generation has grown up assuming everyone knew what a church was — and now nobody is sure.
The conversation does not stay in diagnosis. Chris keeps the bar for the study committee low and the vision serious: force a theological conversation. Recover Calvin's deep ecclesiology — election, the church as creature of the Word, the sacraments, the ministry of the Word. Derek's contribution is to remind the denomination what study committees actually do. They frame conversations. Children at the Lord's Table did. Human Sexuality did. A serious, theological study committee on the church will do the same — without requiring a controversy to do it. The pivot of the episode is Derek's image: a faithful pastor knows when to fight and when to garden. The CRC has been fighting for a decade. It is past time to also garden.
Then Chris turns to Calvin as a model. Calvin was a refugee. He fled France at twenty-five, landed in Geneva, and was forever an outsider. That experience shaped his ecclesiology. He invented the consistory. He gave the modern diaconate its shape. He sent church planters into France for forty years. Reformed mission did not come out of pragmatism. It came out of a refugee's deep theology of what the church is. Chris closes with a pastoral word for tired pastors and anxious elders: the church is founded in God's election. Whether the church survives is not finally on us. Believe that. Lead from that. That is what reformation looks like.

Jason and Dan DeGraff kick off the Messy Reformation's annual Synod coverage with a breakdown of the convening session of Synod 2026. The convening session is mostly a warm-up — an hour of tech troubleshooting and a chance for delegates to find their footing before the real work begins. But it ends with the one piece of business that, year after year, tells you more about where Synod is headed than almost anything else: the election of officers.
Chad Steenwyk is president. Derek Buikema is vice president. Jose Reyes is first clerk. Dave Tenclay is second clerk. Jason's point is not the names themselves but what it means that none of these names is a surprise. Four years ago, the idea that a leader of the Abide Project could be elected president of Synod would have been unthinkable — anyone associated with Abide carried what Jason calls the black mark of the plague. Now it just makes sense. That, he argues, is the single most important thing this episode is about: the fog of reformation makes it easy to forget how far the CRC has actually moved.
Dan brings the numbers and the texture. Over 100 new delegates this year — close to 58 percent of the floor — which is roughly the pattern of the last several synods. He and Jason talk about why the convening session matters even when it looks like nothing happens, why around 25 absent delegates is worth a gentle rebuke, and what it means that the delegates got behind strong confessional leaders right out of the gate. They engage Paul VanderKlay's recent video predicting that the pendulum has swung about as far as it will, and Jason pushes back: he thinks Synod is increasingly willing to take the reins on things like the Calvin Seminary presidency precisely because trust in the institution has been lost.
The conversation closes on demographics that complicate any simple read — the confessional fire Jason has seen among Korean, Hispanic, and Venezuelan delegates, the talk of a new Classis Lone Star out of Hispanic church plants in Texas, and the continued decline in women delegates. In part two of our conversation with Lora Copley, editor of The Banner, the question turns from where the Banner has been to where it could go. Lora doesn't dodge — she names specifics. A Banner podcast launching this year, fully funded through grassroots giving, hosted by Derek Buikema and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra. A daily Synod 2026 recap modeled on the work of Abide Project. A growing donor base of "banner builders." Online space for articles ranging from 500 to 2,400 words, giving faithful Reformed voices a platform the print magazine can't yet hold. This isn't strategic spin. It's a vision of a publication actually serving the church it claims to speak with.
Then Willy turns the conversation toward confessionalism, and the heart of Lora's vision becomes clear. She isn't manufacturing a confessional turn at the Banner — the pitches are already coming. A stay-at-home mom in Chicago on a "Now What?" series for young adults. A church planter in the Multiply 222 network who tells every new disciple after twenty-six weeks of catechism that the only place to go next is Berkhof's Systematic Theology — because the book is incredible. The Reformed confessions are not a museum piece. They're how Reformed churches make disciples, and the CRCNA is hungry for leaders who believe it.
Lora heads into Synod 2026 to be interviewed and voted on as permanent editor. She admits she's nervous — her words tumble out like a clown car at the Ringling Brothers circus, she says — but she'll feel deeply dependent on the Lord and His Spirit, and that's a good place to be. We boast in our weakness so that Christ's strength may be known. The closing word is Jonathan Edwards: among all the counterfeits the enemy can imitate of the Spirit's fruit, the one thing he cannot counterfeit is the exalting of Christ. That's what Lora is praying for the Banner, the agencies, the denomination, and the Synod about to gather. Lifted, fixed, transformed eyes on Jesus. There is no other sign and wonder worth chasing.

Lora Copley never thought she'd be editor of The Banner. When her name first came up, she sent back a crying-laughing emoji. She was a campus minister in Iowa, not a journalist. But on a Saturday afternoon — the day before the application deadline, while her daughter was napping — the thought wouldn't leave her alone. She put in her résumé fully expecting to be politely declined, and instead found herself in Florida, at the Multiply 222 conference, receiving a call she hadn't seen coming. In part one of our conversation, Lora tells the story of how God redirected her into the Banner, and what she's learned about the publication, the denomination, and the work in front of her.
This episode is for anyone who has thrown the Banner in the recycling and assumed nothing was going to change. Lora walks us behind the curtain — how feature articles get planned a year in advance, how unsolicited columns come in, how the Our Shared Ministry pages work, and why submissions have nearly tripled since December. Part two of our Synod 2026 preview goes after the bones: who has authority to discipline, what the church owes the state, what the church even is, and why confessional integrity at every level isn't a bonus — it's the basic ask. The technical density of these overtures hides deeply theological questions, and the answers will shape the future of the CRCNA.
Jason, Dan, and Willy work through the discipline-of-office-bearers task force and the Canadian-law pushback in Overtures 34 and 36, where pragmatism keeps trying to override principle. Then Christian nationalism: Overture 25 from Grand Rapids East, a public reading of Belgic Confession Article 36, and Willy connecting it to the Lord's Prayer. Classis Wisconsin's Overture 33 on Reformed ecclesiology gets the case it deserves — the study committee we actually need. We're back from a short break with the first half of our annual Synod 2026 preview — and this is not a back-to-normal agenda. The Council of Delegates is bringing 27 recommendations forward, and Jason, Dan, and Willy walk through the bigger buckets the people in the pew should actually be paying attention to.
We dig into Recommendation K (Saturday-to-Saturday synod and the Lord's Day problem), Recommendation O (the quiet authority shift on the Program Committee), the biennial synods proposal in Y and Z, and the pay-to-play two-tier ministry shares scheme tucked into Overture 32. Lee Christoffels was ordained in the Christian Reformed Church in 1970. He has been preaching ever since — in Worthington, Minnesota, where his congregation has held services in four languages and watched the community around it change week by week; in Edgerton, where he now serves part-time in retirement; and in pulpits across the region whenever someone needs a preacher on a Sunday morning. Fifty-two years in, he still loves it. This episode is a conversation with a man who has seen everything the CRC has been through since the 1970s and has something clear to say about what holds.
Lee traces the drift that has shaped the denomination's current crisis back to a single question: what is Scripture, and does it have final authority? That question surfaced seriously in the 70s, when debates over biblical infallibility began to fracture the clarity the CRC had inherited. From there, Lee argues, the line runs directly through the battles over women in office in the 90s to the tensions surrounding Synod 2022. The problems were never sudden. They were the slow consequence of decisions made decades earlier, each one loosening the anchor a little further.
The conversation turns on one of the most misused phrases in contemporary church life: semper reformanda — always reforming. Lee insists the historic qualifier was never optional. Always reforming according to the word of God. Reformation is not evolution. It is not the church adjusting to its cultural moment. It is the church being called back — daily, personally, institutionally — to what Scripture actually says and what the church of the ages has always confessed. As Jason points out, the original Reformers did not see themselves as innovators. They quoted Augustine and Irenaeus and said: we are standing where the church has always stood. It was Rome that moved. That same logic applies now.
The episode ends where every episode ends: this is Christ's church and he bought it with his blood. Wolves will come. Keep a close watch on your life and on your doctrine. Preach the word in season and out of season. Lee Christoffels has been doing exactly that for 52 years. It is worth hearing from someone who has stayed the course that long.

If episode 267 made the case that the CRC has a congregational health crisis, episode 268 asks why the structures meant to address it aren't functioning. The answer, according to Matt Haan, is simple: classes have never had a plan. Not a real one. They were formed by proximity, not strategy, and the denomination has never seriously addressed that. What would it look like to treat a classis as a territory — a defined patch of the kingdom — responsible for every church and every unchurched community within it?
Matt introduces the CRC belt of the Bible: 80 percent of the denomination falls within 100 miles of I-90, north or south. Everything outside that corridor is harder. Dan DeGraff adds the legacy dimension — it's not stubbornness keeping struggling churches together, it's that the building is woven into people's faith stories. But he also names what he learned at a recent candidacy gathering in Phoenix: some classes have figured this out, and the ones that haven't need to be challenged, not coddled. Meanwhile, Jason drops the news that Classes Wisconsin is bringing an overture to Synod 2026: before the CRC plants more churches, it needs to answer a basic question — what is a church?
Matt closes with the line that cuts deepest: one church in Classis Iakota had more baptisms than 11 classes combined. That's not boasting — it's a challenge. The gospel is still alive. God can do amazing things when people are willing. The question is whether the denomination is willing to do the unglamorous work of supporting the outposts of the kingdom — not just the exciting new plants, but the struggling congregations that need someone to walk with them and help them figure out what comes next.

The CRC's vacancy crisis isn't evenly distributed. While Thrive reports 146 vacant pulpits, statistician Dan DeGraff's independent tracking puts the real number between 107 and 128 — and the worst of it is concentrated in Canada, where one in four churches currently has no pastor. Host Jason Ruis and co-host Willy Krahnke are joined by Dan DeGraff and Matt Haan for the first of two roundtable episodes on a conversation the denomination has been avoiding: what actually happens to the churches nobody's talking about?
What follows Dan's data is a taxonomy of hard decisions. Jason lays out three distinct buckets — plant, revitalize, and replant/close — and argues that conflating them has cost the CRC real opportunities. Matt reframes what "church planting" could mean: not just new locations, but paid-off buildings with dwindling congregations that need a pastor and a fresh mission. The conversation turns to emerging status, a provision in the church order that should apply to the estimated 206 CRC churches under 45 members — but almost never does. A third of U.S. churches are already under 45 or officially emerging. The tool is already there. Most congregations aren't using it.

Before Harry Frielink was a pastor, he was a camp counselor, shaped by a man named Matthew Kingswood who asked a deceptively simple question every summer before the kids arrived: are you in the word with people? Not are you ready with your theology. Are you in the word — actually, with actual people? That question has never left Harry. This episode follows him through the harder parts of pastoral ministry: the isolation, the marriage under pressure, the theological controversies that arrived at Synod and in his living room, and ultimately to his closing word — a phrase that came from a mentor ten years into his ministry, repeated twice for emphasis: blow on the live embers.
Harry is candid about pastoral struggles. He references Paul Tripp's Dangerous Calling — the danger of a pastor who lives above or outside the body of Christ rather than in it — and says this is a trap he's actively tried to avoid by building real friendships inside and outside his congregation. On the scripture authority question underlying the CRC's controversies, he says personal experience and story were placed above the word in the human sexuality debates. His read on the Human Sexuality Report goes against the grain of how the debate was framed: he saw not a culture war skirmish but a gospel opportunity — a chance to name the full spectrum of sexual brokenness and ask, how does the gospel address this? That opportunity, he says, is still there.
Harry is encouraged by Synods 22 and 23, surprised by the vote totals, and grateful for young pastors speaking with clarity and courage. He sees Classis Toronto beginning to turn its attention toward the Great Commission — revitalization, discipleship, getting ready for people already coming to the doors. His closing encouragement draws on three simple practices: blow on the live embers where the Spirit is moving, be in the word yourself, and pray — privately, faithfully, at a level you'd be glad to lead publicly. You'll never preach at a level above your own reading. You'll never lead in prayer beyond your own prayer life. And that, he says, is grounding enough.

Harry Frielink has served the same classis for thirteen years while the denomination around him transformed. He came up through RTS Charlotte and Calvin Seminary, took a call in southwestern Ontario, and eventually settled in Barrie — an hour north of Toronto — where he's now been pastor for over a decade. What he's observed from that vantage point is not a smooth doctrinal progression, but a denomination that came to a cliff edge and, surprisingly, stepped back. This episode is about formation and faithfulness: how a pastor gets made, how a classis gets tested, and what you learn when the train wreck finally happens.
Harry traces his own formation — from the pastoral notes Douglas Kelly wrote in the margins of his syllabi at RTS, to the practical wisdom that said he'd always be an outsider if he didn't go to Calvin, to his conviction that the church, not the seminary, is the real training ground. In Classis Toronto, he watched classical oversight quietly fade — no regular church visits, little deliberative work — until the weight of disaffiliation made it unavoidable. He describes going with another pastor to visit Meadowvale CRC before things came to a head: not to score points, but to ask the actual questions. Where do you stand on scripture? On the historicity of the fall? On the atonement? They were honest. And that honesty named what actually divided them.
Harry has watched Classis Toronto shrink from 8,000 members to 2,000 since 2005. He says that soberly, not triumphantly. What encourages him now is not that the fight is over but that people are finally looking forward — toward evangelism, church revitalization, the slow work of discipleship. He's also learned something true about himself: he is not a spiritual Superman. The council leads. Elders teach. Deacons serve. The pastor equips. That's not a retreat from ministry — it's a Reformed ecclesiology, practiced honestly, finally beginning to bear fruit.

If you walk into a pastoral care situation knowing exactly how to fix it, you will make it worse. That's where Part 2 begins—with Jason and Shaun naming the pride that destroys pastoral ministry the same way it destroyed King Saul. From there, the conversation turns to some of the most honest and practical territory the Messy Reformation has covered: what to do with the overwhelm you can't show the congregant, why your elders are co-shepherds and not a board, and what Ole Hallesby's book on prayer has to say to every pastor who has ever felt crushed by the weight of ministry.
The practical advice here is unglamorous and proven. Church doesn't end after the doxology. Get to know your district—not "so-and-so's sister" but her name. Pick two or three people each Sunday and have a real conversation in the narthex. Calvin said it well, and Jason paraphrases it from memory: the care of souls is so overwhelming it can never be done by one man—this is why God gave us a body of elders. The co-pastoring model at Trinity CRC makes this concrete: people want to be fed by the same hand that holds theirs at the bedside, not a specialist they barely recognize.
The episode closes with Hallesby's insight that all prayer flows from helplessness—and that prayerlessness is usually a sign you think you've got things under control. Helplessness, rightly understood, doesn't produce fear. It produces courage. And from there, the final from Shaun: "I've never fixed anyone. I've never healed anyone. I've never saved anyone. But by God's grace, I've had a front row seat to what he has done in many people's lives. And that compels us all the more to worship him."

Now he's co-pastor at Trinity CRC in Sparta, Michigan—holding a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy alongside his MDiv—and he's convinced that most churches have quietly abdicated one of their most important responsibilities: the care of souls. This episode is a candid look at what Christian counseling actually is, why the reflex to "refer it out" is often a failure of pastoral nerve, and what it looks like to do it right.
The conversation covers hard ground honestly. Both Jason and Shaun have counseled people through suicide, abuse, and grief—and both have learned the hard way that the biggest mistake pastors make is walking into a crisis ready to solve it. Before any wisdom lands, trust must be built. People don't care what you know until they know that you care. The most powerful diagnostic framework is also the simplest: nearly everyone who comes to a pastor is wrestling with guilt, fear, anger, or loneliness—and the scriptures give us the answers to all four.
The episode closes with one of the most important statements about pastoral ministry you'll hear: when you walk into that counseling room, you are not the true counselor. The Holy Spirit is. He has given us his Word as the means of healing, and the pastor is simply the instrument. "I've never fixed anyone, I've never saved anyone, but by the grace of God, he's allowed me to be a part of what he's doing."

Churches say they want hard conversations. They say they're ready to change. And then the STM arrives. Part 2 of the STM roundtable with Roger Sparks and Harv Roosma moves from the structure of this ministry into the raw material they actually work with: human nature. Forgiven, being sanctified, still human. People talk, Roger says plainly, as long as they sense you're going to agree with them. The real work begins when you don't.
The surface issues vary — declining attendance, unaddressed conflict, gender disagreements, councils stretched thin, vision that's gone fuzzy. But underneath almost all of it is the same thing: a trust deficit. When trust breaks down, everything else follows. And Jason, who has watched more church conflict than most as a stated clerk, names the failure mode he's seen destroy congregations: when councils start deciding what to share and what to control, the congregation already knows. Trust, once lost, is very hard to get back. The antidote isn't a program. It's the thing Roger keeps coming back to — talk to each other instead of about each other. Pray for each other, not just about each other.
Harv talks about the profound satisfaction of preaching on forgiveness, feeling the pushback from people who aren't sure they want to go there, and watching something break open. Roger talks about the honor of being trusted with someone's pain. Both talk about the same miracle: you walk in as strangers and leave as friends. When Dan asks what settled pastors can do to protect their churches, the answers are disarmingly simple — be honest, go talk to people yourself, don't give anyone a stick to hit you with, love your Bible, love your people, practice humility over flash, keep vision sharp, and address things before they fester.

The CRCNA is navigating a pastoral shortage, smaller candidate pools, and congregations that have been through enough upheaval that calling a new pastor straight away isn't always the right first move. This episode introduces the STM — the Specialized Transitional Minister — through two men who have made it their life's work: Roger Sparks and Harv Roosma. They want you to know something upfront: having an STM doesn't mean your church is a problem church.
Roger came to the work through a painful door. After 34 years in Medicine Hat, Rock Valley, and Laverne, he'd watched churches go through messy separations as a synodical deputy — and gone through one himself. Harv arrived differently: a teacher turned pastor who spent 20 years on Vancouver Island before sensing that the churches he served had deeper needs he wasn't equipped to meet. Pastor-Church Relations pointed him toward STM in 2018. He's been doing it ever since.
The structure is practical — a year-long commitment, first six months learning the church, second six months preparing the way for the next pastor. A priority list of 14-15 items gets narrowed to three or four. The training through the Interim Ministry Network is serious: church DNA, change dynamics, appreciative inquiry, moving a congregation from scarcity thinking to abundance thinking. But the phrase that captures the spirit of the whole thing is Harv's: we go in pre-fired. Your time is limited anyway. There's no fear. The job is to uncover what needs to be uncovered and love people well on the way out.

This is part two of our team update — and we're getting into some specifics. The big topic: the COD's recommendation for biennial synods, which will come before Synod 2026. Willy serves on the Council of Delegates and voted against the recommendation, and he explains why.
The proposal came from a task force looking to cut costs. Their solution? Hold synod every other year instead of annually. But as Willy lays out, this isn't just a budget issue — it's an ecclesiology issue. Synod has its authority because synod is the church. It's not something we get to skip when money's tight. And here's the kicker: under this plan, COD would meet six times in two years while synod meets only once. That should concern all of us.
Coming out of the battles over human sexuality, departures, and division, this is the wrong time to pull back from gathering. We need more connection, not less. And as Willy points out, it's ironic that the denomination just ran a whole initiative called Gather — and now wants to gather less as a synodical body.
On the encouraging side, Lora Copley has been hired as interim editor of the Banner — and that gives us real hope. Herb Scheur's recent article was exactly the kind of accessible, Reformed content the Banner should be putting out. If you stopped reading the Banner, now's the time to come back. And if God's tapping you on the shoulder to write, submit something.
We close with a call to serve — on COD, committees, boards, wherever God is leading. The priesthood of all believers isn't just a doctrine we confess; it's how renewal actually happens.

It's January, which means it's time for our annual team conversation — just Jason, Willy, and Dan talking about where we are, where the CRC is, and where we think things need to go.
After life updates (Dan's upcoming sabbatical, Willy's new pastor in Pease, Jason's transition into school ministry), we dive into an honest assessment of the denomination's current state. Willy frames it well: the CRC has spent the last few years establishing what we're against, but now we're struggling to articulate what we actually stand for. That's the opposite of how our confessions work — they lead with affirmations, then denials. We've done it backwards.
The result? An unsettling quietness across the denomination. People are asking "now what?" and nobody has a clear answer. We talk about the temptation to start another fight just to rally the troops — and why that's exactly the wrong move. This is the rebuilding phase. And rebuilding starts with identity.

Advice from Roger Sparks:
- Speak only when you have something to add to the conversation-Say something new and different
- Write down three things—Make a short outline before you speak—helps with confidence—Prepare a little bit, at least
- Don’t wait to put your name in the queue-Get your name on the list
- You only get 3 minutes to speak-so focus
- Advisory Committee recommendations set the tone
- You can table the majority report, to discuss the minority report
- Remember you represent Christ & the Church
- Speak the Truth in Love Clearly
- You don’t have to speak up on everything
- Begin your talk with, “Mr. Chairman…”
- Ask for clarification when needed
- Synod can be very emotional
- Stick with the Bible and trust the Holy Spirit
- Start with the Bible. End with the Bible.
