Grinding In The Prison House
Judges 16:18-21
[18] And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
[19] And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.
[20] And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
[21] But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.

Hypocrisy
Luke 12:1
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy is not only a repugnant sin, but an extremely common one. In fact, it is the natural tendency of our flesh.

The God Of Taking Away
Job 1:20-22
[20] Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
[21] And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
[22] In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
It is easy to believe in the goodness of God when he gives us blessings. Faith, however, sees God as sovereign, omnipotent, and merciful when he takes blessings away.

Daniel 3:13-18
[13] Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before the king.
[14] Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?
[15] Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
[16] Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
[17] If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.
[18] But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
It is one thing to stand strong knowing you will be delivered. Who, though, has the courage to stand strong regardless of whether deliverance will come?

Ephesians 6:10-17

Knowing Too Much
Matthew 27:39-42
[39] And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
[40] And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
[41] Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
[42] He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
Isaiah 55:7-9
[7] Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
[8] For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
[9] For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Psalms 50:16-21
[16] But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?
[17] Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
[18] When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.
[19] Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.
[20] Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.
[21] These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
The men who stood at the foot of the cross were not unlearned and ignorant men. They did not have too little knowledge to know the truth be saved. Indeed, they knew too much.
They knew too much about their own judgments, preferring them over the scriptures. They were sure that Jesus was condemned of God, and would not hear otherwise.
They knew too much religious knowledge without knowing the author of all knowledge. They were able to make scriptures fit their ways instead of seeking to make their ways fit the scriptures.
They knew too much of their own righteousness, being convinced that they themselves were morally above this man who they gladly had crucified and now openly mocked.
You can know too much about the teachings of truth to recognize the truth himself when he is hanging on a cross in front of your eyes.
How much do you know? Do you know the truth, or do you know too much about yourself to know Him?

The Attire Of An Harlot
Proverbs 7:6-10
[6] For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
[7] And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
[8] Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
[9] In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
[10] And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
What is the attire of an harlot? It is indefinable, yet undeniably recognizable. It is the outward presentation which shows the inward desires of a woman. As a false woman generally represents the false church in scripture, we see that the false church has also a indefinable yet recognizable appearance.
A harlot's attire advertises the flesh. Flesh is after all where her power is. She shows more flesh by showing less clothing. The harlot church likewise shows more of the flesh by showing less of the covering of righteousness.
A harlot's attire attracts attention to herself. So too does the harlot church attract attention to herself instead of Christ. Her actions are designed to catch the eye rather than the heart.
A harlot's attire attracts adulterers. Spiritual adultery is 'cheating' on the bridegroom - Christ. Loving God and the world is spiritual adultery. A harlot gives a promise of an illicit relationship. So does a harlot church, promising that those who come into her can have this world and heaven, too. As with all harlots, they lie.
A harlot's attire angers the almighty. We see this spiritually in Revelation 2:18-22 and naturally in Isaiah 3:16-24, God is not lightly displeased with the attire of an harlot. He hates it passionately.

Revelation Chapters 17 & 18
In Chapter 17 we see Babylon pictured as a woman. In Chapter 18 we see Babylon pictured as a city. These two pictures show two different aspects of Babylon. Chapter 17 speaks to religious Babylon, while Chapter 18 speaks to natural or worldly Babylon. Since Babylon is derived from the word 'Babel' which means confusion, and God is not the author of confusion, we see that either picture represents a system in opposition to God.
From this, we see how the two pictures viewed together reveal that worldliness in the church and fake religious spirituality in the world are in agreement. This helps us understand what we see in our church and nation, and helps us understand why so much emphasis is put on simplicity and modesty in scriptures. Further, seeing the terrible judgment on Babylon pictured in Revelation, we understand the importance of keeping well separated from either type of Babylon.

Hebrews 12:18-29
[18] For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
[19] And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
[20] (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
[21] And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
[22] But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
[23] To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
[24] And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
[25] See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
[26] Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
[27] And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
[28] Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
[29] For our God is a consuming fire.
Looking especially at verse 25, "See that ye refuse not him that speaketh", we look at the ways that people refuse God.
First, to refuse life is to refuse God. As Christians, we love life and desire the fulness of life for everybody. We love the ways of life, the blessings of life, the goodness of life, and the Creator of life. Consequently we hate death, the ways of death, and things that bring death. We are especially thankful that Christ overcomes death with life.
Secondly, to refuse law is to refuse God. We speak not here to the law given through Moses to the Israelites, but the law of God written on our hearts - the law of grace and of a good conscience. Christians should be an orderly people, desiring law, order, and decency in our family, our church, our community, and our life. We should hate and avoid disorder, rebellion, strife, chaos, and disobedience wherever they are found.
Lastly, to refuse love is to refuse God. Love is of God, God is love. We have refused God if we love not our neighbor, regardless of salvation, age, political beliefs, sex, race, financial status, habits, etc. If our love is of God it will prevent revenge, bitterness, coldness, and arrogance.
It is for us, then, who choose not to refuse our God who speaks to us through Jesus Christ, to refuse not life, law, or love.

Proverbs 31:4-7
[4] It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
[5] Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
[6] Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
[7] Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
Beginning with this text and going into several others, we examine the Biblical position on drunkenness. Drunkenness is defined and scriptures on drinking, personal and national drunkenness, tolerance of drunkenness, those who justify drunkenness, and curses on drunkenness are examined, statistics on drinking and its effects are brought out, and the position of the church is staked out clearly.

John 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
The important question that must be settled before any doctrine can be taught is this, "Do you love God?" The mercies of God are for those who love him. The promises of God are for those who love him. The children of God are those who love him.
To find the answer, we ask these questions: Do you desire him? Do you speak of him? Does your heart burn for him? Is he more important than others?
Also, we ask ourselves whether our love has grown cold. Do we take him for granted? Are we getter deeper in our love toward him or more shallow?
Do we keep his commandments? For this is what our Lord said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments."
Do you love God?

John 4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city,...
When the Samaritan woman believed on Jesus, she left her waterpot and went into the city to tell others of this Messiah whom she had met. The waterpot is of great significance. It represented her plans and priorities, including what seemed necessary for her very survival. It represented her possessions as waterpots of the day were valuable both monetarily and sentimentally, often being family heirlooms. As with other earthen vessels in scriptures, it also represented her very person.
The Samaritan woman left everything when she believed, When Jesus sat upon your well, did you leave all? Did your plans and priorities for your life become unimportant as you yielded to his plans and priorities for your life? Do you now consider all of your possessions as his, to be left at his feet? Would you consider wealth or family traditions of the utmost importance, or would you leave them to serve Jesus? Would you give your very person into the hands of the Lord and trust him with every detail of your life?
Have you left your waterpot? Did you really believe?

1 Samuel 30:1-6 We see in this passage of scripture the workings of God in the life of David. David had found himself comfortably settled into the Philistine town of Ziklag, but this was not where David needed to be. From seeing how that God caused David's comfortable place to be removed from him, we can understand that what seems like catastrophe in our own lives can be the sovereign hand of God working us toward the place we need to be in His plan.

Luke 19:37-40 [37] And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; [38] Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. [39] And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. [40] And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
Jesus came down from the Mount of Olives entering into Jerusalem to go into the Temple to the cries of Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord. This cry was a Messianic cry as found in Psalm 118, proclaiming the the Hope of Israel had arrived. The Pharisees objected, not believing that Jesus was indeed the Christ. Jesus' response tells not only that he would raise up from a dead, deaf, blind people (the Gentiles) his followers, but also for what purpose he would raise them - praise!

The gospel is preached using the story of the rich young ruler recorded in Mark 10:17-27. The young ruler came running to Jesus, kneeled to Jesus, and prayed to Jesus, yet remained unsaved because he would not forsake all that he had. Even today salvation is not in the running to Jesus, kneeling before him, or praying to him. True belief means forsaking all that one has or is. True belief, saving belief, requires all. The gospel we preach is an all or nothing gospel.

In this message, we examine how to get beyond living a ritualistic religious life of do's and don'ts. Instead, we step beyond into a life where every thought and action is guided not by law and ordinances but rather by one abiding principle - Christ's sake.
