The 100th episode of This Rural Life (previously The Rural Rockstar) is out this week and I have decided to take a break now. I am not really sure what the direction of the podcast is and I need to do some thinking. I love sharing and doing the podcast but I feel like its been lacking a bit of direction and I need some time to think about what I am doing with it. Kind of a metaphor for my life right now really.

So I share where I’m at, what the journey has been to here and what I hope to keep doing.

Thank you so much to all of you for your support and listening a long and being on the journey with me for the show.

This week for the pod I recorded an episode about my journey with perimenopause for you. I have had so many friends talking about this lately and I’ve been sending them all the links to podcasts and info and where to go for help etc so I thought I’d do a podcast for you all too.

I feel like there are so many women suffering and not knowing what the hell is going on for them. So I wanted to share my journey with you to give you some hope that there is a way through it and you can do something about it.

I’ve been pondering lately my constant internal battle with wanting more and being content.

As I have shared with you before, I spend a lot of time yearning for travel, adventure, creativity, connection, something more... I feel a pull to do and achieve more, to leave a legacy, to contribute, to “succeed” and yet at the same time, I crave peace, stillness, contentment and internal calm.

This Rural Life is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

My spiritual teachings leave me with the comprehension that peace comes from within, it’s internal not external and it’s available to me at any moment and yet, there is still the yearning.

Why can’t I be at peace with where I am? Why does this feel like not enough? Why do I always want more?

If I think about the example of travel. I think about travelling all the time. Like every day and yet, when we were travelling full time, I found it really hard after a time and wanted to come home..

I do this with my work as well, even though I have my own business which is what I wanted it doesn’t feel enough..

Lately I have noticed, I have had more of a sense of calm and peace, but then I wonder if I’m losing my spark?

Mel Robbins podcast episode last week really struck me too.. I have long known that striving to “be happy” is pointless. Happiness is not actually a state you reach one day and then stay there for ever. Money, other people, your career, success, achievement, don’t necessarily “make” you happy. It’s an inside job as we know.

But for me it’ not actually about wanting to be “happy” I really love life and I have an immense sense of gratitude for it, for Tim for the kids, for everything I’ve experienced. It’s not the happiness that is missing as such, it’s more this feeling of wanting to DO more. It’s almost a fear of not living that BIG, full life, it’s this feeling that my soul needs more.. So - I know this is where my work needs to be and I need to continure to be curious. Why isn’t this enough? Why do I feel like I am not enough..

This one is for the parents.. I don’t know about you but I lie awake at night worrying about the digital world our kids have to live in. Social media is a lot for adults and our poor kids have to try to navigate all this at a time in their lives when they are so vulnerable and dealing with so much change.

There is so much research to show how damaging social media is for our kids and yet it’s left up to us poor parents to try to do our best to manage it.

Something that has been coming to light lately in the media is how girls as young as 10 are buying all sorts of intense skin care because they’ve seen it all on TikTok of instagram or some sort of social media. Mecca is now full of tweens and teens and they are asking for $100 plus moisturisers. Zoe Foster Blake weighed in recently too.

Not to mention all the body image issues and anxiety and depression increasing.

So I definitely do not have all the answers when it comes to this and I worry about it a lot, but a couple of things that we do to try to at least limit the amount of time they spend on social media and tech.

  1. Only our eldest Daisy has a phone. We have a no tech policy for the other kids except on car trips when they get I-pads. (disclaimer - they do watch a lot more TV than I’d like) but we feel like at least with TV we can tell what they are watching a bit more easily. I don’t let them watch YouTube either.
  2. No tech in the bedrooms at all. Ever.
  3. Once they have a phone, we have screen time set up so that after a certain amount of time it shuts all the apps down. Then at night we have down time set up so it shuts down and doesn’t come back on until the morning.
  4. Also - really clear communication with the kids about why we’ve got these strict rules around social media and tech has been really helpful. We have many discussions with the kids at the dinner table about it and explain to them why we are having these rules.

We also haven’t had TikTok yet for our eldest. We let her get Instagram a few months ago and I have noticed the change and noticed her getting very addicted to it.

It is so hard implementing these rules and I wish it wasn’t on us to have to restrict it. It causes so much stress for poor parents!

In the mean time, hopefully some these things help you. If you have any other suggestions or advice on limiting use for our kids I would love to hear them!

Another short solo this week because as I mentioned the other kids are still on holidays for another week!

This week I share with you the joy of just starting the thing you’ve been putting off and why I want you to just start and do it messy. And if you have a real block around something you need to do some subconscious reprogramming work and unblock it.

Often there will be something from our childhood that someone said to us that makes us feel like we’re not good enough and it’s been programmed in to the subconscious. We don’t realise it but it’s holding us back. So no amount of willing it to happen and just trying to do it will work.

I highly recommend the To Be Magnetic work or self hypnosis. It takes a bit of time but if there is something you really have been trying to do for years and you just can’t make it happen give the subconscious re-programming stuff a go because the world needs your voice and magic!

This week my guest on the show is Kate Ivey from Dedikate Fitness
Kate is an online fitness instructor and she runs online courses for rural women. She's based in New Zealand.
I wanted to get Kate on because I thought it'd be so helpful to interview someone in the fitness world at this time of year, because I know that in January, it's the time of year when everyone has these new year's resolutions and then quite often all the research shows that by January, we've all fallen off the bandwagon.

So I thought it'd be so valuable to get Kate on and ask her exactly how we avoid falling off the bandwagon and how we actually maintain, long term changes this year, rather than just the sort of the starting out and then stopping within a few weeks.

We talked about how to actually start and how to make the changes stick.
Kate shares why it's really important to dump the scales and there's loads of other really great advice to set up for the long term.

Kate also has a challenge coming up in February so I encourage you to head to her website and get involved.

Today's guest is Dr Michelle Woolhouse, the Holistic Doctor.
I met Michelle on a retreat last year and she is now my Dr. Michelle is the wonderful women who helped me with my peri-menopause and changed my life!
Michelle has written a fabulous book and I wanted to get her on to chat to her all about it and all about how we can avoid burnout in 2024.
We discuss:

  • how we can set ourselves up to have a year of more peace
  • why Michelle wrote her book, what led to her writing the book,
  • where do we start to have a year without burnout?
  • How do we recognize the signs of burnout and how do we know if we're heading for burnout?
  • What we can soften it more than avoid it all together because as Michelle pointed burnout is something that's a symptom of the society that we live in, but it's how do we manage it and how can we feel empowered so that we can face the challenges that we have and really avoid that deep burnout that so many of us can get to and avoid that happening.

So I think you are going to love this episode with Michelle. I loved it. I could chat to her all day. So I hope this is helpful to set you up for a wonderful 2024.

You can find out more about Michelle HERE and get her book HERE

Create space to release 2023 and welcome in 2024.

If you are feeling a bit flat, exhausted, lost, still rushed, overwhelmed, or just not present, I highly recommend actually thinking about what it is you need right now.

Do you need to commit some time and space to doing some work around releasing and letting in?

Do you need to let go of goal setting and planning for 2024 all together right now and just do the bare minimum to rest and reset?

What is it that YOU need? There are so many people all pepped up right now full of 2024 vibes but if that's not you that's OK. Is that what you want to be doing? If it is why aren't you? If it's not let it go. Get curious and decide how you want to be feeling.

xx

Welcome to 2024! For the first podcast of the year I asked my beautiful friend Benita to come on and share with us how we can set ourselves up for success for 2024 and also how we can really enjoy the holidays as well with our kids.

We talk about what tools she suggests for how to enjoy the school holidays and how to set yourself up for a great 2024 in what ever way that looks for you.

The key takeaways were:
- to sit down as a family and work this out together. Don't just do it by yourself. Do it with your partner and also do it with your family and involve the kids in the process.

  • plan the school holidays and have routines around the school holidays. So that it sets everybody up with those clear boundaries so that you can approach the holidays in an empowered way and it's less stressful.

  • The the third thing that really struck me in this episode, which is a big theme that came through in all the episodes for January, is the importance of rest and giving yourself space. So if you're not feeling all charged up, ready to set goals or any of that it's okay to have space and have rest and just giving yourself that space in January is going to be really important.
Enjoy this beautiful episode with Benita with lots of wonderful things that we can do to set ourselves up for a brilliant 2024.

Today's episode is a short solo show where I share with you some short exercises you can do at this time of year for releasing the past year and setting up for the new year.
Nothing too heavy, as it's just that crazy time of year when you don't know what day it is. But just some simple things you can do to get present and grounded and prepare for the New year.
I'm not going to do a big wrap up of all the things I did this year, but rather just give you some tools. There is also a seperate episode with a meditation for you to practice for release and creation.

In today's hot tip minisode I share how setting an intention can make a big difference to how your day goes for you and those around you.

Setting an intention for the day is something I do on and off and listening to Dr Emily on The Imperfects reminded me how important and helpful it is. So after you meditate in the morning (meditation first up is the absolute best way to start your day) set your intention for how you want to feel and show up that day. Also to further that I would say - how do you want to make other people feel that day?

Set an intention for the impact you want to have on other people. I always think of Maya Angelou saying “People won’t remember what you did they will remember how you made them feel”

This is definitely something I work on but do not always nail. I have been conscious of this for years, but I still find a lot of the time I am so in my own head that I am not really thinking enough about how I can light up someone else’s life. I am not too bad with people I like and love but there is work there to be done on people that I have challenging relationships with. I think if I try to approach it more from how do I want to make them feel it will be better!

So setting an intention for every day is so fabulous and I would invite you to use this over Christmas too. How do you want to feel and how do you want to make others feel this Christmas. How can you be the one to really make it fun and special. In the end as we know that is the only thing you can control anyway!

I mentioned The Imperfects Podcast Episode with Dr Emily you can find that HERE

This weeks guest is my great mate Meg Durham.

Meg and I were chatting and at this time of year, we often do sort of a Christmas special or more of a "how to survive Christmas"

We were chatting about the lead up to Christmas on one of our regular morning walks and we thought it would be lovely to share an episode with you guys all about how we can approach Christmas in a more empowered way.
Meg suggested we chat about really how to approach it with more curiosity and the power of curiosity at this time of year.
We discusss:

  • What it means to approach Christmas with curiosity.
  • How can getting curious support us this Christmas
  • What does it look like in terms of how we behave and how we are in relationship to others
  • How we can get in to the Ps at Christmas time and feel like we need to get everything perfect and inviting us to get curious about what that is actually costing us
  • How we can move away from this need to have everything perfect towards something more joyful for us.
  • How to make that change
  • Listening to our bodies
  • Letting go of the fantasies and expectations and letting it be a bit easier.
  • Coming from a place of thinking that everyone is doing the best they can with what they've got.

I loved this chat with Meg and I hope it's helpful for you as we head towards Christmas. Give yourself a break, choose curiosity and joy instead of perfection and producing and let it be easy this Christmas.

Consider a social media break for a bit over Christmas.

I am going to be taking social media off my phone and not doing any socials for a couple of weeks over Christmas. My podcast will still be coming out and my Substack so you’ll still get updates there but no socials apart from the odd story maybe. Just going to switch off and try to be present. I can feel a little bit of resistance rising to that already and I know I really need it. I am also going to try to have some time off work for a couple of weeks. It’s been a pretty busy run of late with lots of moving parts so I feel like a good break is needed!

I highly recommend you thinking about taking some time of the socials to reset and be present. Avoids the risk of comparison, it allows you to be with your people and it allows you the space to notice how you really are rather than voiding by jumping on the socials as a distraction.

My guest in this episode is Jac Lewis from The Broad Place.
Jac is my meditation teacher, and I've also done my meditation teacher training with Jac.
I've known Jack for the last 10 years since I learned meditation with her. I wanted to have Jac on to explain to us all about meditation, what it's all about, why bother meditating and really just unpack all of that with her.

I thought Jac was the perfect person to explain all of this good stuff to us.

The key points from this episode:

  • What is meditation. Why bother doing it? What are the benefits of meditation?
  • The myths around meditation and the common myths that you might hear.
  • Sleep versus meditation and why meditation is different from sleep.
  • How meditation can help us in really tricky times, whether that be through harvest or leading up to the silly season, when there's lots of challenging things going on in the broader world, and then also navigating just our own day to day challenges of life when we might be experiencing grief or loss or some sort of trauma.
  • How to make meditation a regular part of your life and not just rely on it when things are bad, but how to actually have it as a regular practice to help us in those more challenging times.

So I think you're going to get a lot out of this episode and you will see the many benefits of meditation and why I love it so much!

This weeks hot tip minisode is about getting out the journals and looking back on them to see how far you've come and if you don't already journal then get started!

Given all the stuff I’ve been sharing about the ego mind telling me I haven’t done enough lately, I’ve been leaning into my practices and one that has been lovely is going back through old journals and looking at what I’ve written to see how farm I’ve come. It’s really reminded me how wonderful journalling is and how helpful it can be.

I am so glad I have my journals to look back on.

I highly recommend starting a journalling practice if you don’t have one already. You can do Morning Pages as suggested in The Artist Way although I think often that sort of writing you can’t really look back on as it a bit scribbly and dribbley. 5 minutes of more intentional writing at the start or end of the day is probably ideal.

What are you grateful for

What are you noticing

What are your dreams

Who are your people? Who do you want to spend more time with?

How is the quality of your current relationships?

How do you feel?

Happy journalling and don't forget to sign up to my substack for more goodness!

In this weeks episode I interview Jo Scott form Make Do Co.

Jo is a meditation teacher and a yoga instructor, who helps students develop holistic leadership skills through workshops courses.

I wanted to interview Jo because I wanted to understand how she could help us reduce the overwhelm in the lead up to Christmas.

The key points from the episode are:
- how to reduce overwhelm,
- how to prioritize at this time of year,
- the importance of rest and how hard rest is and why it's so hard
- letting go of the need to get it all done.

I got some on air coaching, which I think you guys will all find very helpful.
And Joe shares with us a couple of exercises, but one in particular, it's a great exercise for really tuning into your own intuition and to yourself and to your mind, body, and heart.
So I think you're really going to enjoy this episode with Jo.

About Jo from her website We Are Make Do
I’m Johanna Scott. I founded Make Do Co. in 2015 in response to some of the gaps I was seeing in how we live, work and do business.

The goal of creating this purpose-led community was to bring together a group of people who wanted to make something they were passionate about and, in that process, do work that was meaningful and mattered to them.

But not only this – I wanted Make Do to be about more than work. Because how we fill our days is, of course, how we fill our lives. As a result, all my programs measure success holistically – by your goals, your mental wellbeing, your health and your genuine happiness.

I offer programs that will help you gain – what I call – “holistic leadership skills,” including meditation and yoga workshops to help foster calm, build resilience and manage stress; a communication workshop to help you argue better and make every interaction more productive; and a small business program to help you build the business you imagine.

I also offer one-on-one business and careers coaching to help you progress and achieve your goals.

This weeks hot tip is to practice self compassion, don’t compare to others and be kind to yourself this holiday season.

This is always so important and especially at this time of the year. It’s so easy to get in to comparison, to see everyone else’s perfect Christmas, perfect summer holidays, perfect kids getting awards, perfect list of all the things they have achieved this year and all the goals they’ve kicked.

But it’s never the full story and you never know what is going on behind it all for someone else really.

So instead of comparing to others look inwards. Just compare to yourself in a kind way. Have you reached your goals? Are your kids doing their best? Is your Christmas the perfect Christmas for you? If your not skiing in Whistler or holidaying at the beach somewhere - are you out playing cricket with the kids or going for walks or just chilling and reading a book? Or what would an actual enjoyable holiday break be for you? (Remembering holidays with kids are NEVER like the pictures on Instagram)

So don’t compare to others. Practice self compassion when looking back on your year and be kind to yourself. And think about getting off socials for a bit if its making you feel to anxious and shit about yourself. Come back to you, your family and your real life community.

In this episode I interview Sue Heward from Singing Magpie Produce.
We chat all about how she followed her fathers idea to create the gorgeous dried products from their orchard fruits.

Its a wonderful story and Sue shares a lot of great helpful tips on how you can go about value adding. Sue says it's been a lot of work but you can hear the passion for her produce in her voice.

In the episode we discuss:
The history of the orchard and how she came to develop the products
Sue's background pre farming
How to decide what to do by looking at the market not just what you think would be good.
Looking for a point of difference.

Sue gives some top tips if you're looking to value add or to do something like this in your own business.

  • get support for marketing to
  • think about your food safety from the get go
  • work with food consultants, for example, straight to the source, she recommended the Straight to the Source guys
  • look at outsourcing where you can and look at getting contract manufacturers if you need to
  • get a good accountant so you can focus on what you do best.
  • bring in the experts where you need them. Don't be afraid to ask for experts.
  • get support.

And one more little key takeaway was - there's always something that you can do. There is always something out there. Love that!

So there's lots more juice and lots more gold in this episode. So I think you're going to really enjoy this one with Sue from Singing Magpie Produce.

About Singing Magpie Produce
In 2021 was the Heward family orchard 100 year celebration. Over that time the Heward family has tended their orchard in the rich and generous soils of the Riverland, South Australia. It’s beautiful, fertile country — but hot as hell in summer and often in and out of drought. We are proud and feel privileged to be living and working on Erawirung Country.

Amos 'Jack' Heward, a returned soldier settler, planted his orchard in the 1920s at Monash and today the family harvests 1000 fig, 200 quince, 50 pecan trees, and approximately 100 tonnes of wine grapes.

Despite growing up wild and free in the cornucopia of the Riverland, Sue Heward, like so many young Australians before her, was keen to explore the world. After 28 years of global travel and career-building, she found herself deeply embedded in the Melbourne rat-race, living an urban lifestyle but desperate to share the life she knew as a child with her partner and young daug

In this minisode I share my tips for planning out your next 5 weeks!

Get out your calendar and actually map them out. Not just the things you have to do but predict how you are going to feel. So have a look and see when there are really busy weeks, when there is a lull. Where are the high pressure bits and the low pressure bits.

Be ready for the ups and downs and figure out how you will approach them. We know it’s going to get crazy that’s inevitable but how can you approach it so that you are ready and have tools at hand.

Think about what you do when things get hard and then think about what you’ve done in the past that has helped and have those tools ready.

Be prepared to say no to things and don’t overload yourself in a week where there is already lots on.

In this Hot Tip Minisode I share with you how having a good declutter recently has been sooo helpful.

Having a good declutter (it is Spring after all!) and then thinking really consciously about what you buy is just life changing.

Honestly having a clean out and a total tidy up, is so good for the soul. It’s such a good idea to have a clean out pre Christmas too. For some reason this year, November feels like December for me and I feel really ahead of myself. But then I know it will get to two weeks before and I’ve forgotten to do heaps of things.. anyhoo one thing i have done is have a big clean out and it’s really just so good.

  1. Start by asking yourself, how does my home feel? Is it inviting and calming? Is it comfortable or is it a mess? If you’re constantly surrounded by mess and clutter it adds to your anxiety levels, makes it hard to find things and leads to even more overwhelm.
  2. Then do an audit of each room and think about what sort of home you want to have and what sort of environment you want to create.
  3. Clean out and get rid of all the crap that you don’t really need and is just taking up space. I read from a stylist somewhere, if it’s not beautiful or functional, don’t have it on display. But then don’t just shove things in cupboards either. Having clean well organised cupboards makes a big difference too.
  4. Do a tidy up at the end of each day and go to bed with the kitchen tidy so you can start the next day with a clean slate and keep on top of things.
  5. Then make a commitment now in the lead up to Christmas to not buy too much stuff and just fill the house back up again.

We made the decision a while ago to give our kids experiences instead of gifts for birthday presents and we try not to give them too much stuff at Christmas. Often I panic at the end and think I haven’t got them enough and end up buying too much again, it’s so easy to fall in to the trap of thinking they need more things. But they don’t. It’s just a consumerism trap. Have a clean out now and then really think about what you really want to have in your home and how much stuff you really need to buy at Christmas.

This week I thought I'd unpack what "the work" has been for me over the years. A few episodes back I interviewed Meg Durham (my friend and mentor and wellbeing educator) about what "the work" is.
I thought it might be helpful to follow up with an episode where I share what the work looks like in my life and how it's unfolded and how it plays out daily so you can see what it really looks like in action.
I am so glad I am on the path of doing the work on myself and every day I am grateful. I hope this episode inspires you to do the work on yourself.
If you want some support to start doing the work by meditating then please reach out for 1:1 support.
I also have an online meditation program for "Calm and Centred" over 3 weeks starting on Tuesday November 21st. You can join the program HERE.

This week on the show my Guest is Em Swift from Printhe Wines in Orange.
Em's partner is Ed Swift who's family own Printhe wines and Em joined the family business after working in marketing for most of her career.

Em shares her story of joining the family business and how she made that decision when the timing was right.
We hear all about how the business went through some big challenges but how that has actually lead to opportunity, as it so often does. Following the smoke tainting and then covid, the business really needed to diversify and make up some ground. They decided to develop the tourism side of the business, building a cellar door and restaurant.
It's not just any restaurant either, it's a fine dining one that just received one hat!
They have managed to create a world class tourism destination and be part of the Ultimate Winery Experiences Group.
Em is an absolute legend and it was so lovely to hear her story and the story of the business.

In this weeks minisode I share a tip with you to help you work on being present.
Our suffering really comes from thoughts of the past or the future a lot of the time and the more we can practice being in the present moment the more content we will be. But this is hard and it's made harder with social media and particularly at times when there is so much going on in the world.
I hope you enjoy this short minisode to support you.

In this episode I chat with Tammi JOnas of Jonai Farms and The Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance President.
This is such an interesting chat about an area that is so close to home for me and that I am so curious about. Changing our food system is a mammoth challenge and one that I am constantly thinking about but increasingly overwhelmed by. Tammi's work in this area is so important and she breaks down for us what we can do more on an individual level.

We discuss:

  • The Australian Food Svereignty Alliance
  • The Neo-liberal system of government that places the market above all else.
  • Is it really human instinct to want to get bigger or has that been socialised.
  • It's not just the food system that needs to change in isolation.
  • Working co-operatively as a group rather than alone and the importanace of community
  • The need to be creative to solve these big problems.
  • Thinking about "peasant farmers" differently and what we can learn from these systems.

Tammi certainly raises some radical ideas and some of them might be pretty confronting for people, but i am so curious about this different way of thinking and I think it's fascinating to hear Tammi's idea.
As we are right in the thick of food system challenges ourselves, I ask some big questions of Tammi as we look to what our future here looks like and how we can navigate the system we are in.
It's such a great chat and I hope you enjoy it.

About Tammi
Tammi is the co-editor and co-author of Farming Democracy: Radically transforming the food system from the ground up (2019), and co-author of a chapter in the 2019 volume One Planet One Health, detailing a collaborative regional approach to building greater resilience into agricultural landscapes and regional and rural communities.

Tammi is undertaking a PhD at the University of Western Australia on the biodiverse and decolonial practices of agroecological farmers, and the ecological, social, and political enabling conditions for an agroecological transition in Australia, with a particular focus on farmers with rare and heritage breed livestock.

She is also the president of the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA), promoting everyone’s right to access nutritious and culturally-appropriate food grown in ethical and ecologically-sound

It was incredible to be able to have Sarah as a guest on the show to discuss a topic that it particularly relevant to me at the moment and this discussion is one that I think will help a lot of women.

In this episode we discuss:

  • what peri-menopause is
  • What is going on in the brain during this time
  • What the symptoms are
  • The fact that research in to the female brain and this stage is really very new
  • "the first study published on how the structure of women's brains changed during perimenopause and menopause came out June 2021"
  • How we can change the way we see this stage and the language we use to describe this very pivotal period of change in womens live.
  • How we can learn to embrace it rahter than fear it.
  • What to do if you think you might be in this phase
  • The myths and misconceptions around hormone treatment

This is such a great episode and I loved chatting with Sarah about this very important topic so much.

Fiona McKenzie - Transgrid and what we can learn about community engagement

In this episode we discuss the Transgrid projects that are happening around the country to connect renewable energy to the city.
We look at what is happening in relation to the implementation of the projects and what’s really going wrong. Fiona discusses the paper that she has published on the policy intention not lining up with the implementation on the ground and we use this as the basis for our discussion on where governments are still really getting it wrong when it comes to working with community.

Key takeaways:

  • Fiona suggests that there needs to be a shift away from traditional models of service delivery and towards a more collaborative approach that involves both industry and government.
  • There is a need for genuine co-design of projects and the setting up of new regional structure with community members empowered to make a whole set of decision.
  • There needs to be genuine resourcing and community needs to be a partner in the energy transition, but they need to be resourced to be a partner in the energy transition, that is not just in terms of money, but that's in terms of how do people get the time, how do they get the skills, how do they get the you know, even if it's just governance structures.
  • So, it's not just, right, we'll hand the problem to you. It's, let's set up. Whatever the backbone organizations need to be, the secretariat. If you treat a community like an executive board, you would give them all the support you would give a board to make decisions. You would bring them the expertise, you [00:24:00] would bring them the data, you know, you would actually bring to the table and equip them to be good decision makers because they actually are good decision makers.
  • But like a board, you don't just suddenly go, right, head of the company, you figure it out. You don't just leave the chair on their own. There's all sorts of things we do in other contexts where we support the decision makers really well. In a community context, we either kind of don't ask them or we just give them a handball.
  • For genuine change the structures of government need to change to enable space for different ways of doing things.
  • There are examples of where community engagement is done well, in the U. S., the community benefit funds sharing that, particularly on some of the new renewable projects. New Zealand has amazing examples of community owned energy Scotland and Fiona notes that there is a real opportunity here in Australia with the Renewable energy targets,
  • Fiona’s advice for communities who might be in a situation wh

We hear Carmen's story and how she got to starting an online business to support farmers with their business management.

Ask yourself what is the opportunity cost.
Things take a lot longer than you think.
Start things on the side and be clear about what your objective is.

How Trauma Affects our Ability to Practice Self Care

In todays episode Chantal shares her insights on the importance of self care and we dive deep in to how experiencing trauma, not matter how perceived big or small that is, can effect our ability to actually practice self care, self love, and take care of ourselves.

I love that Chantal explained that self care is making sure you have great self awareness. It’s not just nail polish but also it is nail polish!

Although Chantal stresses she is not a trauma expert she gives some great advice on what to do if you want to take steps to deal with your own trauma or you want to support someone you love.

The road to recovery is not always easy, but staying the same often isn’t either. There is no shame in what you have experienced and you can learn to thrive with hope and optimism if you learn the tools.

A bit about Chantal

Goondiwindi-based psychologist Chantal Corish’s journey over the past nearly two decades has been one of deep insight into the lives of the people who make up the bush, and the trials and tribulations they experience from cradle to grave. A mother of three girls, and a farmer’s wife, she has been able to provide deep empathy and care to her clients, always with the goal of making them feel truly seen and heard. As well as running a psychology practice, Chantal has worked as a speaker, coach and workshop facilitator, providing education and entertainment to countless rural audiences, helping to raise awareness of, and destigmatise the issues surrounding mental health. During the recent drought years, she was successful in obtaining funding to facilitate ‘Flourish’ well-being workshops for rural women; and ‘Calm Farmer’ workshops for men, particularly those farmers working alone and shouldering the brunt of the ‘big dry’.

Fleur McDonald

On today’s episode of The Rural Rockstar I am speaking with Fleur McDonald, a West Coast Author, with an incredible 18 novels and children’s books published. Not only is Fleur an author, but an advocate for women, fighting passionately to aid those experiencing domestic abuse including founding the organisation DVassist.

After school Fleur decided to pursue a job in Farm Management, however, the roles are given to her, and available to those not from the farms were far and in between, which made the transition into the role difficult, and helped to transition Fleur into Agri-Business, and then eventually led to her first novel in 2007.

Fleur described her younger self as brow batten and lacking self-confidence, feeling like all she knew was farming and writing. She knew she could make a living from writing, but she needed the motivation and support to write two a year in order to be grounded with purpose, and finance.

When writing Fleur often takes from personal experience and surrounding landscapes. However, taking girls and women as the main characters, throwing major stones at them, and helping them to walk out the other end stronger and empowered. When writing Fleur says she often operates in her subconscious, getting totally lost in the characters and situations.

While writing Fleur also works to advocate for Agriculture, and living in Regional/ Rural communities.

Fleur takes her passion for strengthening women, and communities and blends them together to create these incredibly inspiring novels and children’s book.

It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Fleur today, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

In today's episode I wanted to share with you the steps I take my clients through and the things I work on in my programs to support people to live big full aligned lives!  I have called it the 5 steps to happiness but happiness is really not the full picture!  There is so much more to living a good life than just feeling happy! Happiness can be fleeting and what we really want to be is thriving! Able to ride the ups and downs, face challenges, learn and grow through all of life on the journey towards our dreams!  So I unpack the steps in this episode! I started with 5 but it turned in to 8.  If you'd like to know more about my programs or how you can work with me 1:1 please reach out.  katrinamyerscom.au  katrina@theruralrockstar.com.au

Today I wanted to riff on something that I think about a lot and it's a piece of the conversation that is often missing. My overall mission in life to support people to live big full lives that light them up!  Sometimes we don't talk about the struggle at all. Sometimes we talk about just the struggle and what we need to be talking about is, "yes, there is struggle AND the choices we make really matter and can really make a difference"  How you are showing up in your days, matters.  Life is hard and it's harder when we are not taking care of ourselves.  In today's episode I share about our experience of a terrible avocado season and how Tim and I cope with this. The choices we make that allow us to be OK.  I hope today's episode inspires you to think about the choices you are making. Where you might be looking to outside of yourself for approval and success and how you can start to look in ward and know that you are enough just for being you.  xxx

My guest in this episode of the Rural Rockstar is a little nostalgic, taking me back to my uni days. Chloe Thompson and I met studying agricultural science together many moons ago. Back then, there were three strains to this course - animals, plants, economics - it was the fascinating world of plants that made Chloe's heart sing and it is within this field that she continues to flourish! After teaming up with a mum friend back in 2016, Chloe took her gardening skills to the web, offering an online platform called 'The Gardenettes' where people could expand their knowledge base on both products and plants. It was an instant success, with a unique 40's vibe, helping so many make their gardens their happy place. From here, and a little pandemic thrown into the mix, Chloe again took to the online world, recently launching Sprout School - a six week online gardening course. Not surprisingly, another huge success! I cannot wait to see where she takes this! Accompanying the discovery of a clear gap in the market, we chat about the definitive point where Chloe knew her concept had legs and how she took her skills and knowledge to a place where it would become most beneficial, to a wide and varied audience. If you're thinking of starting out or have an idea in mind, Chloe has so many tips on how to take that first leap! I promise, it's not all work in this chat. As I do with all my guests, we talk through Chloe's daily wellbeing practices. What she does to be her best person - not just for herself but for everyone around her. Like gardening, this chat was so good for the soul! I know you'll love it as much as I loved bringing it to you. Enjoy K x

This week on the show I was joined by Julia Greiner. Julia lives on a farm at Coleambally and has created an incredible styling coaching business, Crops and Sequins.

I loved chatting to Julia all about how she went from speech pathologist, to fashion and runways, to falling in love, to motherhood and farm life to launching her styling business!

Julia shares her story of launching her business for the local community at first before taking it online.

I have loved watching Julia show up in her business on social media. She absolutely rocks it and in this episode she tells us how she's managed to get the confidence to show up.

We also talk about the power of style and fashion in terms of self expression and our identity and being ourselves and how she supports women through this.

I loved chatting with Julia and I am sure you will love it too.

Happy listening

In today’s episode I speak with my Virtual Assistant, Brittany from With, B. Brittany and I connected a little over 6 months ago when I knew that there were aspects of growing my business that I wasn’t strong in.

In this episode Brittany discusses her journey to Australia from Canada, telling us how she landed in a small town with her now-husband and toddler.

It was during her journey of motherhood that Brittany decided she wanted to become a lactation consultant, but she needed around $6,000- so she set off to find a business that could help her with that. After a couple failures, it was suggested Brittany become a VA. Being a VA was foreign to Brittany, as she didn’t even know what one was, however, after much convincing from a friend, she started her business, and with that came success, burn-out, and self-discovery.

I loved this conversation with Brittany as we get to learn more about her, but also how she managed burn-out, and how she even started her business of being a VA and now Social Media Manager.

Let me introduce you to the superwoman that is Sarah Keeley - my beautiful guest on the Rural Rockstar this week and the creator of Conscious Calendar Co. The term 'a gift from the universe' is the exact story behind Sarah's business venture. Always drawn to crystals and a self-proclaimed hippie at heart, Conscious Calendar Co came to fruition on a car trip one new years eve. It was a fleeting thought, but backed by her confidence and a mission to prove to herself she could pull it off, Sarah had products on shelves just 10 months later. She didn't overthink it, she didn't strive for perfection straight up, she just had confidence in her product and a connection to the idea behind it all which is what she attributes to her success today. Throughout this podcast, we chat about exactly that - not letting the fear of failure hold you back from pursuing something you love. It's so easy to get in our heads and make excuses about why it won't work but in doing this, we miss out on the joy that is creating something amazing and fulfilling and something that can be enjoyed by so many others. Not being held back by the crippling need of perfectionism, Sarah gives hope to other women to put aside the fear and follow their dreams. Her biggest piece of advice (and one of new favourite analogies) was to treat criticism like Teflon. You may laugh, but there's some real bones to this theory. When you've created a product from your soul, and you put that to the public, you are made automatically vulnerable, especially to those who don't share the same faith in your product. The thing is, your product isn't for everyone. And in trying to please everyone, you lose yourself. So here's where the Teflon theory comes in - don't let criticism take hold of your heart or your head. It's non-stick, like Teflon. Just wipe it off. There's so much more we unpack in this episode and I don't want to give too much more away! Tune in, give it a listen, and I know you'll find so much goodness in Sarah's story. Enjoy! Today I wanted to share a bit more about my journey of creating an online business and how I got to my first 5k months. I get so excited about this topic because I want to show other women what is possible and that they can do this too.

To me online business for women represents so much opportunity! You can do it from anywhere and it allows you to have an impact while creating freedom and abundance!

Today I share the journey for me in wanting to start an online business. The different paths I tried and how I have ended up here!

I also know that getting to the point of actually making money is the hardest part so I want to share all of the journey with you!

For about 5 years I had wanted to start my own online business.

I had been very heavily involved in our own farming business.  I did the books, payroll, social media and was very hands on and I actually started an online avocado shop as part of that.. I really enjoyed it in a lot of ways but as I started to do the personal development work and understand more about myself, my strengths and my weaknesses, I realised that I actually was hopeless at the accounting side of things and I'm no good at anything requiring attention to detail. I loved the social media stuff, but I just had this desire to do something more.

I had listened to a million podcasts and I had taken courses and been inspired by many online entrepreneurs who were leading and influencing online and I just knew inside that this was the sort of business I wanted.

For a long time though, I just couldn't crack it. I struggled to get the confidence, to get past the imposter syndrome, I took so many courses, and just kept thinking that I needed another qualification to get the skills. I kept trying to follow a process and a formula to create an online course, but I couldn’t crack what it was that I really wanted to teach on and I didn’t like the old way of sales.

Last year I discovered Kathrin Zenkina and I started to do the money work. I was initially embarrassed to say I was doing money work and that I wanted to manifest money because of old paradigms and societal norms, but now I have realised this is a massive part of the work! And of course it’s Ok to desire money!

I’ve since discovered lots of women creating the most wonderful online businesses teaching women how to do the work! How to attract money, how to start businesses, how to create more influence and show up online with confidence and this is the business that I have been able to create now too. In this episode I share what you need to create a business and start making money and it’s not necessarily what you would think.

I am so excited to share with you some of what I have learnt on the journey so far. There is lots more to come and I can't wait!

In today’s episode, I speak with West Australian, Tanya Kitto. Tanya, and her husband Rob, live 100km from their closest hub of Geraldton, and farm of mostly sandy terrian. After a difficult season of farming their family knew they needed to diversify what they were doing on the farm. Rob and his father were always inspired by human-grade consumption of Lupins, but they weren’t sure how to spread the word about their brilliant properties, or really, how to monetise them.

In a twist from the Universe, Tanya was diagnosed with Chrones disease which halted her from eating foods containing Gluten. With the knowledge of what she already knew of Lupins, and what her husband and his family had been researching and working on for years, My Provincial Kitchen started to really blossom.

My Provincial Kitchen became Tanya’s additional child, taking up much of her time. Tanya became passionate about supplying others with products that could be consumed by those with gluten allergies in a safe but delicious and convenient way.

Tanya and Rob have built a budding business out of My Provincial Kitchen, but not without their hurdles, including the most recent hurdle, a devastating cyclone that ripped through their region during Seeding, which resulted in the loss of most of their stored Lupins and storage for the upcoming season.

In this episode, I speak with Tanya about being a passionate Farmer, Business Owner, and Innovator in their industry and how she balances that with motherhood and maintaining her own wellbeing.  It was so interesting to speak with someone on the West Coast and I look forward to many more conversations with Tanya, and others in WA. Such a beautiful conversation.

Today on the Rural Rockstar I am joined by Cynthia Mahoney. Cynthia is a well-known facilitator, coach, mentor, speaker, and author, with a fiery passion for personal disruption, neuroscience, positive psychology, courageous conversations and more.

To sum it up, Cynthia is an expert at all things I am interested in.

Cynthia wasn’t someone who always knew this is what she would do, in fact, Cynthia, like many young people, had no idea what it was she wanted to do. Given that her family were heavily involved in the Agricultural Department in Benella, Cynthia decided to get comfortable with that, pursuing a degree in Ag Science.

Ag Science turned out to be a great fit for Cynthia as it covered science, economics, sociology, journalism, and so much more.

After graduating Cynthia pursued a government career working in economics, however, she realised quickly that what she was passionate about what studying the farmers, and how they made decisions around their farming businesses. She undertook her own research to discover that farmers often made decisions based on personal feelings, and what was happening in their lives at that moment.

For nearly 17 years Cynthia continued to work in this area, very passionately, until she realised she could do more direct work within the community, on her own.

Cynthia described how for many years she was waiting for a door to open for her, for opportunities to flood in, so she could leave her job and embark on her own journey. That simply did not happen. It took Cynthia to actually resign, with nothing else to fall back on, for her to start having those opportunities flood in.

Cynthia is now a leadership facilitator and is passionate about authentic leadership and showing the way. We chat all about what leadership really takes and how we need more feminine leadership to correct the balance.

Cynthia shows us that leadership is not a role, it'r activity and its what we choose to do each day. Everyone is a leader and we all have the opportunity to be lead ourselves with self compassion and courage.

During the course of writing her new book Cynthia had some light bulb moments and shifts in her writing which lead to the inspiration for the title.

Cynthia started her practice working with many rural and regional leaders, teams, and communities. Every day she wakes up delighted with her direction, her purpose, and her work.

It's a very special episode of the Rural Rockstar this week because I am chatting to my fabulous coach and mentor, Suzanne Acteson!

Suzanne is tuning in all the way from France and she actually still very much fits the bill of a Rural Rockstar because she resides in the beautiful French country side - 9.5 hours from Paris to be exact.

I was so excited to delve into Suzanne’s story of taking the leap and moving to France as Tim and I are planning our own big adventure next year!

As with all my wonderful podcast guests, I love delving into how they got to where they are and also what their wellbeing routine looks like. Suzanne's story is one I could honestly listen to all day. It's basically the epitome of the saying 'follow your dreams' and it's equal parts inspiring and incomprehensible.

Suzanne is a little bit of all of us and she’s showing what’s possible when you have a vision, take the leap and make things happen. It wasn't until the birth of her third child that she actually took a breath and realised she had to put herself at the top of the list to make sure she could show up for everyone else in her life. How did she do this? Her, her hubby and her 3 boys moved from Melbourne to a farmhouse in the foothills of France. It was this step back from life that truly allowed her to move forward and how she is now able to channel such amazing advice to people through her successful coaching business.

Together we talk about the natural progression of Suzanne's business and how she managed to build it up through becoming unapologetically her. She says that no market is ever too saturated when you are adding your spin on it and I think that's something all of us, especially start ups, need to remember. We chat about goal setting, aligning your personal and business values and becoming super intentional about your life and how you want to craft it.

I feel so blessed to be able to share the wise words of Suzanne with you all. It's listening to people like her that make you realise how important and how beneficial it is to invest in yourself, particularly through the likes of a coach who is this bloody switched on.

Enjoy the listen friends!

In this episode I chat with Bridget Johns from Be Simply Free.

I love this chat so much because it is not only full of super helpful practical tips for how we can all manage the mental load and declutter our lives, it’s also the story of change and taking a leap to start something new. Which we LOVE.

Bridget started her own business after 16 years in a career in government. She created her own business from scratch and followed her passion. I love that Bridget is a wonderful example of what’s possible when we take the leap!

Bridget left Adelaide after studying a food science degree to take her first job on the York Peninsula. She vowed never to go near a farmer but 3 months after arriving fell in love and ended up marrying and has been there ever since! Bridget and her family farm sheep goats and cereals.

Bridget never expected to be a country girl. She thought it would just be a year or two then off overseas!

After re-skilling to be more adaptable to the country area, Bridget worked in State government for 16 years. Then, in 2019 Bridget found herself crying all the way home Adelaide after finding out her role in government had completely changed and she was no longer suited to it.

After reading the quote,  “Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path” Bridget used this opportunity to really assess what she wanted to do with her life and wrote down “to be a professional organiser” That was on the 21st of May 2019 and by March 2020 Be Simply Free was born!

Bridget tells us how she took baby steps towards pursuing her dream but has never looked back!

Bridget now teaches women how to not only declutter their homes, but their phones, calendars and minds.

Bridget gives so many wonderful practical tips for things you can start doing today to reduce the overwhelm and the mental load and it is such a valuable conversation for right now!

If you would like to join Bridget’s upcoming course, head to her website at besimplyfree.com.au for all the details or follow her on Instagram and Facebook!

Welcoming another week with another episode of The Rural Rockstar and you'll just have to excuse me on this one because I am in full fan girl mode as I speak to the amazing Georgie Somerset.

About 10 years ago, Georgie and I connected via Twitter in the very early days of the platform when it seemed to be a lot more fun!

Since then, Georgie has been high on my radar as I continue to admire all the amazing things she does for regional development across Australia. Among many other positions representing rural Australia, Georgie is a current member on the board of the ABC which is quite fitting given how passionate she is about regional communications, making sure people get their stories told, and having great public broadcasting.

There are so many takeways and little golden nuggets throughout our chat. Georgie has an amazing wealth of experience and with that, so much knowledge and wisdom to lend to those who come after her. In fact, she is extremely passionate about the next generation - their voice of youth and enthusiasm and the energy and skills they can bring to the table.

One of my favourite topics throughout was Georgie's emphasis on the importance of 'scaffolding'. A term which implies exactly what you'd think. Having people around you for support and to build you higher. Whether you're a chair or a CEO, you cannot be without solid scaffolding. I'd expect nothing less from someone as wise as Georgie, but honestly, what an amazing analogy!

I could write for hours unpacking all the things we discussed but I think it's best you just give this podcast a listen for yourself.

I will just leave you with something Georgie said that really struck a chord with me and that was 'Your goals will shift but your purpose and values that are what remain'. Total music to my ears!

Enjoy the listen my friends!

Welcome to another week on the Rural Rockstar. This week I dive into Motherhood, Coaching, and Transitioning with Benita Bensch.

Benita and I have so much in common and it was such a joy to speak with her. Like speaking to an old friend.

Sp much of what Benita said resonated with me and it’s just another reminder that we all share so much in common as women and that doing the work is so important.

From Rural Science graduate to a career in Marketing that she loved, to facing her own challenges which led to the inspiration for starting her own coaching practice, Benita’s passion for supporting and empowering Rural Mums is very close to my heart.

Having reached rock bottom herself after infertility and miscarriage, Benita wrote a book, The Art of Trying,  to share her story and offer support to others experiencing the same challanges and she now supports Rural Mums through her coaching and courses to empower them to live their best lives and navigate their own transitions.

Benita’s story is an uplifting, admirable, and fun journey to listen to. I hope you enjoy the episode.

Another week has rolled around which means another episode of the Rural Rockstar is upon us, and my guest today is the beautiful Kirsten Diprose. If the name sounds familiar, it's probably because Kirsten worked as a TV and radio reporter for the ABC for many years. Kirsten has since hung up the heels and replaced them with working boots and a whole new lifestyle which she now enjoys on a farm in Caramut with her husband and two boys.

Before meeting her now-husband in a bar in Melbourne (very pre-Tinder style she admits), Kirsten moved from Sydney for a one-year cadetship with the ABC. Once completed, she gained some regional tv experience in Bendigo but found herself back in Melbourne where she resided for 8 further years. That was until the quintessential love story arose and she moved to the land for love.

Together, Kirsten and I talk about the transition from life on the screen to life on the land and balancing motherhood with a career. She offers some fabulous advice on all facets of life. My favourite - "don't have things set in stone, life doesn't work like that".

The ability to be flexible in life is so more important than ever and Kirsten puts it together so eloquently - one of the perks of interviewing a communications specialist I guess!

I hope you enjoy the listen.

Here it is 🎉 Part 3 of my series with Meg- and this time we go down the rabbit hole of resilience.

What does it really mean to be ‘resilient’? Is it the person who seems to be able to just cope? The child that never cries, the stoic old farmer? Or is it really far more than that?

Have we been missing a very big piece of resilience?

In this episode, Meg shares with us her definition of resilience, and at the same time, I share the world’s definition. FYI- they are VERY different! So in this episode, we unpack the word resilience, the science and the art and really figure out what it means to be resilient, why it’s so important and how we can support our kids and ourselves to build resilience.

I know you will love it! It’s a ripper with so much gold as always from Meg!

Welcome to the second conversation in my series with Meg Durham on The Rural Rockstar and I must say, it’s an absolute cracker. Today we are unpacking a topic I think we can all admit to struggling with and that is the big C word - CONFIDENCE. What is it, and how the hell to you get it?!

Confidence is complex, so it’s no wonder so many women struggle with it. But if there’s a quick take away from this podcast, it’s that it all stems from developing a sense of faith and trust in yourself. When you hear the term ‘confidential’, you put your trust in another party that your information is safe. Confidence on a personal level, is extending that same trust within. Whatever happens in life, you have enough trust in yourself that you can show up for it. And if things don’t go as planned, the courage to manage it anyway.

The best thing about confidence, is it’s an entirely learnable and teachable concept. Meg shares a few tips on how to cultivate it and how to work through the sense of discomfort that comes with gaining more of it.

I always love my chats with Meg, on and off the air, but I feel like this one is a really important listen for so many of us.

I hope you enjoy this podcast with myself and my dear friend Meg Durham and find as many helpful take away’s as I did!

On today’s episode of The Rural Rockstar, I am chatting with my dear friend, Meg Durham. I’m lucky enough to have Meg as one of the strongest pillars of support in my life and I’m so thrilled to be able to have her on to share her words of wisdom with the wider world.

This episode is part of a series Meg and I will be doing together, sharing our similar journeys to achieve a life where we feel we are truly thriving. Today’s chat just so happens to touch on exactly that.

What is the difference between thriving and surviving? We chat about how maintaining a solid well being requires ongoing action and awareness and the importance of taking that deep (often daunting) dive into actually getting to know YOU. What well-being looks like to one person may look completely different to the next which is why shifting your operating mode from survive to thrive is an individual journey. (But there are some guide posts you can use).    What lights you up and what depletes your energy levels? It could be a matter of thinking back to the wonder and innocence of your childhood. Wherever it takes you, we are here to tell you why the journey is worth it.   We had such a blast recording this together and bringing you an episode we truly think will bring so much value to your life, especially if you feel you’re operating purely in survival mode.   Thanks for listening!

This weeks chat is with the amazingly talented, Kimberly Furness - founder of OAK Magazine. Speaking to people who's values are so aligned with all the things I love is the best and makes for some fabulous content for you!

Kimberley is the epitome of a rural rockstar. Her magazine centres around supporting, celebrating and connecting women in business in regional and rural Australia.

It didn't all just fall in her lap though. Kimberly worked hard to get where she is today, starting from very humble beginnings, as the work experience kid at the paper in Nhill in a fairly remote part of Victoria. Before working at her local newspaper in her hometown of Bendigo. Accompanied by this stint (and a saucy letter in high school that saw her marching into detention), Kimberly realised her love (and natural knack) for storytelling.

With a foray into beauty, an internship at Cosmo, starting her own business, founding a magazine and having four kids along the way, this is the story of a women who   manages to juggle the mum and work balance like a boss. We hear all about how she manage that too!

This chat was so easy and natural, I could have kept at it all day long. An absolute pleasure to bring this to you - enjoy!

Today it’s just me speaking on something I think is essential for survival- and that is self-care.

Too often we get caught up thinking self-care is selfish or indulgent. We have negative talk in our heads about taking care of ourselves and we put everyone else's needs ahead of our own.

A lot of times we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves, it becomes so lost to us. We are so busy doing things for everyone else, rushing around and giving all of our time that we have forgotten what it even means to take care of ourselves and that, sadly, it what gets rewarded in today’s society.

Once we find ourselves managing our families, our workplaces, our friendships/ relationships- we become a juggling clown, trying to keep all the balls in the air!

Some of us manage to hold it together on the outside, putting up a front and looking like everything is fine, but underneath, we are sacrificing so much, we are running on empty and often we don't even realise it’s not the only way.

Sometimes, deep down we are terrified we are going to drop a ball, and when one ball inevitably drops, so does a lot of our inner strength.

We need to start prioritising ourselves and supporting other women to do the same.

Self-care doesn’t have to be indulgent. Self-care can be sitting with a hot cup of tea and finishing it without letting something interrupt you, or going to to bed an hour earlier, or going for a walk! I talk about these ideas, and so much more in today’s episode.

If you enjoy listening to this podcast please feel free to leave me a review. I would absolutely love that!

On today’s episode of The Rural Rockstar I am speaking with Steph Trethewy from Motherland- a podcast that shares the stories of Rural Mum from across Australia.

If the name Steph Trethewy rings a bell, it’s likely from her time as a reporter on A Current Affair which took her to Brisbane, Melbourne and in the most romantic of ways, led her to her husband, Sam.

In this podcast, I chat to Steph about falling in love with a farmer, leaving her life in the city for a farm in Tasmania and how she found her way around raising two kids in the country without that all important support network she had known in Melbourne.

Now, not “just” a mum, but also an integral part of her and Sam’s beef business, Steph is an inspiration to women everywhere. She unpacks all the layers there are when it comes to being a working mum, the struggles of trying to be everything to everyone, overcoming confidence issues around being a woman in business and how she manages to wear all the hats that women are expected to in today’s world.

It was such a joy speaking to Steph and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed getting to know a little more about this fabulous woman!

This week on the podcast I chatted with one of my mentors, Samantha Nolan Smith from The School of Visibility. I have been part of Sam’s online program for the past 6 months or so and I absolutely love it. I love what Sam stands for and the work she is doing in the world to empower women to be more visible so they can show up in whatever way they want and be seen.

We chat about feminism, getting visible as a woman and the challenges that come with that, speaking up as a women and how that is perceived. And we discuss a woman's role in society and being able to express your own needs and how this might lead to the need to have difficult conversations with your partner. Sam gives some great advice and ways we can approach these often difficult conversations.

I loved this chat so much and could have talked to Sam for hours. I think we might have to get her back on!

This week on The Rural Rockstar Podcast I had the pleasure of speaking with Maya Linnell, three-time author, former country journalist, radio host, and blogger. Maya grew up with a book in hand, and an eager dream of wanting to one day write a book, however, that dream wasn’t vocalised until Maya had three children and wasn’t sure what was next for her. She took the idea of a dream, pulled inspiration from her daily life, from her local newspapers, and town chatter, and turned it into a reality. We discuss the community that comes with being an author, how the story isn’t just written on physical pages, but in your relationship with the readers and people connecting with you, and how living vulnerably is the best way to achieve this.

This conversation with Maya is inspiring, uplifting, and joyful. I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to speak with her.

Today on the podcast, I cover “taming your inner critic”. Most of us would have heard about our inner critic here and there, especially if you tap into personal development. Or maybe you’ve heard people talk about your “inner mean girl” it’s the same thing. It’s also quite possible you have never heard of the inner critic or our inner voices and you might have no idea that we have all sorts of different voices and thoughts in our head.

The inner critic shows up in our negative thought patterns and our self-criticism. It is the voice telling us we aren’t good enough, that we have failed. It is the devil on your shoulder.

Your inner critic can manifest itself in your subconscious and because of this you can live most of your life not really knowing that it is actually just thoughts and not YOU! We can think that this is us but really YOU are the thinker of your thoughts not your thoughts!  This is why it is so powerful to understand how the inner critic works.

Being able to identify your thinking and thought patterns can be completely life-changing.

In this episode, I share my experience of a really mean inner critic for over ten years and how it ruled my life and I didn’t even know it.  I worked out how to overcome the serious mean girl that had become an habitual way of thinking for me but what I’ve learnt is that we all experience the inner critic to varying degrees at different times. It never goes away. You just have to learn how to work with it. So listen in!

This week on The Rural Rockstar Podcast I had the pleasure of speaking with Lou Hammer, who I actually went to school with. Lou, also known as “One Day PA” is a woman who knows her stuff when it comes to juggling the balls, managing a business and family, and is totally inspiring.

One Day PA was born after Lou had her second child. She wanted to simply help busy women to get stuff done. How bloody good! Lou was still working her full-time job when she started this business, but whether her business blew up, she had to resign from her job and get organising full time. Now, her business has an expansion plan, and the opportunity to grow, all by helping women manage their lives better.

In this interview, we discuss her top tips for organisation in the house, and in your business and general life!

This week on The Rural Rockstar Podcast I had the pleasure of speaking with Jackie Elliott, the sensational founder of Rural Women’s Day.

After growing up in Central Victoria her whole life Jackie took a leap of faith, leaving her family home to attend boarding school in Queensland. Agriculture was in her blood- her siblings and her being the fifth generation of farmers on their land. However, upon graduation, Jackie’s parents picked up and moved their life to Southwest Victoria. This change wasn’t easy for Jackie, but luckily, wherever you are in Regional Australia, it always feels a little bit like home. Jackie continued to work and fall in love with Agriculture.

Jackie shares her experience of dealing with depression, how she got out of it and what it’s taught her. It’s such a valuable story for us all.

In 2017 Jackie was asked to share her mental health journey at a conference for the National Centre for Farming Health. This conference wasn’t something Jackie says she was totally ready for, but it was something she feels like now, she needed. This conference helped Jackie to see all the women in Regional Australia that needed to come together. It was this feeling, and her burning passion towards Regional Australia that inspired Jackie to hold the first inaugural Rural Women’s Day event in the Western District in 2019. The event was just the beginning and as you will hear Jackie has gone on to create much more!

This week on The Rural Rockstar Podcast I had the pleasure of speaking with Hayley from The Rural Naturopath. Hayley was born and raised in regional South West Victoria, falling deeply in love with all things agriculture, and a desire to one day work in it within some capacity. Little did she know what path she would end up on.

In year 12 Hayley’s health took an unexpected turn, and not for the better. Hayley was falling ill, but couldn’t get any answers. Together with her mum, they went to different doctors where she was told to google IBS and nutritional advice. Once Hayley discovered a Naturopath and was given a customised nutrition plan, her whole life started to change for the better.

Hayley did indeed go and work in Agriculture, moving to WA with her partner, Lachie, to work, however, she knew what she was doing wasn’t her calling, so on the sly, she started to study Naturopathy and Nutrition, eventually making the move to Geelong to do so full time. While at uni she really sorted out what was going on with her body by changing her diet and making the changes she needed to.

Her love of agriculture, combined with her passion for health and hormones laid out the perfect opportunity for Hayley to work as a Naturopath, supporting those in regional areas across Australia. While working virtually is new to many of us post-Covid- for Hayley, it has always been her business model. Servicing those who can’t travel, are busy, and lives are dependant on the season.

Hayley has an incredible business helping regional Australian’s to take control of, and be empowered by their health. I know you will love today’s podcast.

This week on The Rural Rockstar Podcast I had the pleasure of speaking with one of my dearest friends and mentors, Meg. Meg and I first met five years ago while both attending a women’s event in a small regional town- I gravitated towards her almost instantly- she captivated me with everything she spoke about relating to wellbeing and mindfulness.

In our episode with Meg today she shares with us her childhood dream of becoming a teacher- something most everyone could pick up from her almost instantly. As she aged, this dream didn’t die off, but became stronger, so Meg went out and got her formal education to be a teacher.

Are you struggling to find the elusive balance? Have you come to believe it’s not even possible?

We hear so much about balance being BS these days and in the past I really thought it was unachievable too.

I thought rushing and busy and never having enough time was just part and parcel of having kids, business and life!

But, I’ve changed my thinking a bit as I’ve discovered balance in my own life and I’ve realised that it actually is possible.

It just takes work.

It takes you cultivating self awareness, prioritising yourself, learning the skills you need to feel good and function well, learning your limits, learning to say no and prioritising.

It might mean not doing ALL the things, all at once,  but it is possible.

If you enjoyed this episode we know you will love future episodes as well as we discuss more about: health, well being, overcoming obstacles, and imposter syndrome while living in regional Australia.

In today’s podcast episode I speak with a true Rural Rockstar, Leah Ladson. Leah is one of Australia’s emerging go-to photographers for Commercial and Branding photography, as well as a recognized Wedding & Family photographer too. Leah’s work has been seen in several National & International publications as well as adding ‘Author’ to her belt in 2018 being a co-writer for the book “Weddings, Weddings, Weddings”. Leah wears several hats in her business, she is a Photographer, but also offers mentoring to start-up businesses, as well as being the owner/founder of regional group ‘Girls From The Go’ which supports regional women who run their own business.

Leah’s story is one I think many of us can connect with currently. She is currently stepping back and saying “I just don’t know”- it’s an arms in the air, area of discomfort for Leah, but an area that is leading her down a new path. I know we all feel these moments of discomfort, and wonder how we will navigate. I think this conversation is an important conversation to listen to, it will make you feel less alone, and empowered to keep going. There’s also some great snippets of wisdom and things to try.

In today’s podcast episode I speak with a true Rural Rockstar, Anika Molesworth, from Broken Hill, New South Whales.

Anika is a passionate farmer, a scientist, and a storyteller, working relentlessly to create a better future.

Anika’s story is relatively different from those who are born and raised on regional land. Anika was born, and spent the first 12 years of her life in Melbourne, paying little to no attention to the food brought home to her, or the weather as it frequently changed. When Anika was 12 her parents relocated to far Western New South Whales, where they would buy a farm, and begin to introduce us to animals, how we get the food on our plate, and more. Devastatingly the decade that was 2000-2010 there was a drawn on draught. This drought is what would change the narrative of Anika’s life.

Anika sought out information to find out how, without rain, and with the ever-changing climate, she could maintain a healthy farm, that could support and sustain the population. Her learnings have now helped thousands of farmers across Australia better understand how they can manage, and how they can work differently, to help sustain the land.

The tale of Anika is filled with tales of obstacles, and feeling little in a large herd of often, male dominate communities. Anika rose above, and today she shares how she did that with us.
