Bringing you subjects and conversations I find interesting and inspiring. Series 1 was all about the decade of our 20s and all the complexities that brings as we try on life’s uniforms and suss out who we are. Series 2 is going to be me talking about my story, my journey starting my coaching business, things I think you might find useful and anything else I fancy talking about

Get ready to celebrate, because it's the 100th episode of this fantastic podcast! To mark the occasion, we've invited a few HSP friends to join us on Zoom for a virtual party. We're sharing the joy of being an HSP and having a blast while doing it.
Robbie's putting me in the hot seat with some questions about the journey of the last 100 episodes. We'll be talking about everything from the ups and downs of putting together the podcast, to what inspired me to start it in the first place. It's been quite a ride, but I've loved every moment of it, especially the chance to connect with so many amazing people.
Of course, it hasn't all been easy. I've had my fair share of challenges along the way, but I've persevered, and the result is a podcast that I'm incredibly proud of. As I look back on the last two years, I'm filled with gratitude for all of my amazing subscribers and listeners. Your comments and support have been invaluable, and I couldn't have done it without you.
As we move forward, I'd love to hear from you about which episodes you've enjoyed and what you'd like to hear more of. I'm always looking for new ideas, so don't be shy! You can find contact details below.
But that's not all - Robbie and I are excited to announce that we're creating a brand new podcast called HSP Connection. We'll be exploring all things HSP in even more depth, and we can't wait to share it with you. Don't worry, though - Meeting of Minds will be back after a well-deserved break. So watch this space - there's plenty more to come!

I chose the subject of this week’s podcast after I saw this equation written down:
Intuition = instinct + spirit
It spoke to me and I became really curious about the role spirit plays in us using our intuition. This conversation takes us to what is spirit and how does it help us connect to our intuition? It’s like a translator helping to interpret the signals.
We talk about:

People-pleasing and perfectionism are really interesting for us as they are the main protective mechanisms developed by me and Robbie, respectively, to navigate our childhoods. We had others but these are the main ones. They were the ways we tried to get our needs met - like love, affection and recognition - and whilst they may have served us in childhood when it wasn’t safe to be our true selves, as adults they no longer served us as they drove us to behaviours that were not healthy.
The masks that any of us wear when we are using people-pleasing or perfectionism isolate us from our true self and from others. Trying so hard all the time is exhausting too and we miss opportunities to try new and fun things.
Trying to be perfect and please people gets into our bones and drives all our behaviour until we decide we don’t want to, or can’t, do it anymore. We share our personal experiences and, whilst we still have lots to learn, how we have dropped our masks and are thriving as a result.
We want you to know that there are no laundry police, or dishwasher police, so do it how you want to and find joy in it. You can be imperfect and make an impact. I would say, make an even bigger impact by doing it imperfectly.
Please let us know what resonates for you and what you find useful. Let us have your questions and we'll answer them on future episodes.

Another juicy topic this week, boundaries.
I like to think of boundaries as a resource management system. How best to use our time, energy, money and other resources. Once we've upped our self-care and we're feeling in a good place, we've worked out what we need to make us feel good, how do we then use the resources to we have in a way that serves us. This is where boundaries come in.
For Robbie, boundaries allow her to choose where to put her energy. She has worked on boundaries for years and shares some techniques she has used to help her put boundaries in place.
We don't have it all figured out and we continue to learn, but here we're sharing what we have learned so far. Please let us know what resonates for you and what you find useful. Let us have your questions and we'll answer them on future episodes.

This episode ties in with episodes 92 (self-care) and 95 (relationships) and you might find it useful to go back and listen to those.
Robbie worked out what she needs and found her rhythm largely by experiencing what didn't work for her. For me, it was more a case of having nothing to lose and wanting to try something different. Learning about vulnerability from Brené Brown's Ted Talk helped me take off my mask and be more real. Both of us experienced profound shifts as a result of what we learned.
Admitting to myself that, having achieved what society tells me "should" make me happy, I was miserable gave me the space to start figuring out what I needed. Spending the rest of my life figuring out my rhythm is exciting and brings me joy.
Robbie talks about learning to love herself and treating herself with love. Making sure she got what she needed has been a big piece of her journey, as has learning to put herself first and that she matters. Your voice is more important than anyone else's when it comes to what you need. When you do this and find your rhythm, what happens is a big increase in positive outcomes as well as a decline in the negative outcomes.
We both would love everyone to live a life of true self-love so in turn we can all give love to others. We don't have it all figured out and we continue to learn but here we're sharing what we have learned so far. Please let us know what resonates for you and what you find useful. Let us have your questions and we'll answer them on future episodes.

This episode is a stroll through our experience of relationships as HSPs with both HSPs and non-HSPs. Most of what we say really applies to all relationships - romantic or not. We explore the different ways we do this and our intention is to give you some food for thought.

In this episode Robbie and I stray into murky waters and talk about their experiences of systems as HSPs. Beware of a rant or two along the way.
The intention was to talk about a number of systems and structures but we ended up talking mainly about the workplace as we have both had corporate positions in the past. We will do another episode later on about other systems.
For Robbie, the workplace felt like yet another place where she didn't belong. She could see how the systems were harmful to people but wasn't in a position to bring about real change. Over the last 20 years Robbie has seen a shift to those systems being even more harmful. Some people obviously benefit from the it for the systems to continue but it isn't the majority. As an HSP, Robbie can't just sit with that. It isn't okay. Robbie thinks we should have systems that work for the majority. I agree.
For me (Philippa), my experience of a corporate career was the pervasive feeling of no what I did, it wasn't enough. I did a really good job but usually felt broken by it. Now I realise it wasn't me that was broken, it was the system.
Fixing little things, whilst well intentioned, doesn't address the big picture. A major overhaul is needed. Some businesses are interesting in doing things differently. Some are even doing it. Change is happening.
If you ever feel like we do about the workplaces we have experienced, know you are not alone. If enough of us talk about maybe, just maybe, we might see change.

Many of us highly sensitive folks grow up thinking, feeling and being told that our sensitivity is a weakness and it's something to hide. When we hear messages like "you're too sensitive" we can feel like there's something wrong with us. There isn't and in this episode we want to help you see that sensitivity is a strength.
Robbie doesn't hold back in this episode and we can all hear her passion about this subject. Can we learn to say "thank you for noticing my sensitivity and you're welcome" instead of feeling bad about it? I'm certainly going to try that out.
Sensitivity doesn't mean we can't deal with hard things. In fact, it's the very opposite; not only can we deal with them, we do so with great care and consideration. We care, a lot, and that is how we make change happen. We also delve into the ways that society and big companies turn away from listening to sensitive voices because it's uncomfortable to hear what we have to say. BUT it's really important to listen as HSPs can feel what needs to happen for the good of everyone.
The definition I read out in the episode is:
Sensitive - (1) quick to detect or respond to slight changes, signals or influences (2) having or displaying a quick and delicate appreciation of others' feelings.
There is nothing in that definition that I see as anything but a strength. If you don't feel the strength know it's not you, it's the system that isn't set up for us to thrive but we can thrive if we know how to look after and speak up for ourselves. You're magical and amazing and you are strong. Believe it.

This is the 3rd episode of the HSP Connection and this week Robbie and I are talking about one of our favourite subjects: SELF-CARE
Yes, self-care can involve a lovely, hot bath, a massage or permission to spend all day watching New Amsterdam (anyone else or is it just me?). What we mean here is radical self-care; the stuff we aren't usually taught about but is so important for HSPs to thrive. As Robbie says, self-care is as important for HSPs as sleep.
Our nervous systems are processing so much information, we have to find the things that work for us to relax, restore and rejuvenate our system. It is not a luxury or a "good to have". It's essential if we are to live a fulfilled life full of joy. And that starts with self-care.
It's possible, it's do-able, it's worth it.

Welcome back to the HSP Connection series with my co-host, Robbie Leigh. We started last week with an overview of what it means to be an HSP.
We said we'd drop another episode within a few days to really get this HSP Connection series going and here it is. In this episode we're looking at some of the many gifts of being an HSP.
Such as:
We want to share the beauty and gifts that come with being an HSP. We're starting the appreciation right here!

After a break, the podcast is back with series 6 and I am so pleased to be joined by co-host Robbie Leigh for what we're calling the HSP Connection series. We are both really excited to bring you these conversations about all things high sensitivity and HSP. We will talk about our experiences of being HSPs, how we found out, what it means, what it means for us, how we bring it into our work as high sensory coaches, what it means in our everyday lives, what it means to the people around us and how amazing it is to be a HSP.
You might be a HSP or know someone who is and Robbie and I want to have a bit of fun and spread the word about being an HSP, what it means and how HSPs can really thrive when they look after themselves. There's something in this series for everyone not just HSPs. HSPs are not better than non-HSPs and we're also not worse. We're just a bit different and what's good for HSPs is good for everyone.
For those of you who don't know, HSP stands for Highly Sensitive Person and is a term coined by Dr Elaine Aron in the1990s following her study of people with sensory processing sensitivity. It's an innate trait and whilst it can heighten a person's experience of trauma, it is not, as some think, caused by trauma.
In this episode we talk through what Dr Aron listed as the main tenets of being a HSP:
As we mention at the end of the podcast, we would LOVE to hear from you so please do get in touch. Any questions? Let us have them and we'll answer them on the podcast.

For the final episode of series 5, and of 2022, I am talking to my good friend, and cold water swimming buddy, Pippa Parfait. Pippa is a business coach and strategist, the co-founder of the Disobedient Business Co, the host of the business mastermind that I'm currently part of and an all round fabulous disobedient person.
We talk about joy. About finding the little moments of joy every day, being intentional with the finding of them and how finding them leads to bigger discoveries.
It was such a great conversation and we had a good laugh as well. I hope you enjoy it.
The podcast will be back in January 2023 starting with The HSP Connection mini series with co-host Robbie Leigh. We're excited to bring you this mini series and devote some time to talk all about being an HSP.
Wishing you all a merry holiday season. xx

Today's guest is Helen "Fierce" Ferguson, a trauma psychotherapist. I discovered Helen earlier this year when I was looking for podcasts and live events to guest on. We did a Facebook live in Helen's Facebook group and I was really touched by Helen's kind and supportive way of being, as I was feeling really tender that day. I have followed her since then and I love everything about the way she talks about healing, her integrity, her knowledge and her warmth.
We talked about the wounded inner child, healing trauma, humour in therapy and defining our true self and letting her shine.
This was a wonderful conversation and I hope you enjoy it.

I will be starting 2023 with a mini-series I’m recording with Robbie Leigh (my guest on episode 82). It’s called “The HSP Connection” and we’re going to be exploring lots of interesting topics with our HSP slant. There will be something in the series for everyone and I hope you’ll join us.
This episode is about how the holiday season is not always a happy time and I give you some tips and reminders of things you can do for yourself that will help you navigate the festivities.
I forgot to say, a thing I heard many years ago, which has stayed with me - no-one else but you knows what you plan to do so if you forget something or it doesn’t turn out as you expected, don’t spend precious time and energy worrying about it because only you know.
If you have more tips for the holidays, please let me know and I can share them.

Jen Corcoran is known as the Super Connector. She helps introverted, empathic and highly sensitive female coaches, consultants and solopreneurs attract more and better clients on LinkedIn organically. Jen is also an HSP (a Highly Sensitive Person) and that is how we connected on LinkedIn.
Like me, Jen only discovered she is an HSP relatively recently and it has helped her make sense of her whole life. It has been a real gift for me to discover I am an HSP and I wanted to know more about Jen's experience. We talked about reading energy in the room, people pleasing, what it means to be an introvert, radical self-care and, of course, joy. We also talk a little bit about Human Design and how that helps us make sense of things.
This was a life-affirming conversation for me and I really hope you enjoy it too. Let me know what grabs you.

Amy Stein is a herbalist, energy medicine educator and trauma-informed breathwork facilitator whose mission is to educate and empower those who are struggling with their health and may identify as highly sensitive and empathic.
She works with Mother Nature and helps us be our own best healer by tuning into our mind, body and spirit. She reminds us that we get to choose what is best for us.
Amy has suffered from many autoimmune conditions and she used energy and plant medicine along, with breathwork, to regain her health. She's here to share her story with us because she wants you to know that she sees, hears and believes you, no matter what health-struggle you are going through.
This was such a surprising conversation with someone I had only just met and I even had my own realisation as we spoke. Here are the links for Amy:

Elisha is the epitome of energy and she brings all that to our conversation. We talk about life with sensory processing sensitivity (what Elaine Aron referred to as the Highly Sensitive Person HSP), understanding and advocating for our needs in a world that isn't set up for difference of any kind. Here we talk in more detail about the education system and the changes Elisha is hoping to make.
Elisha also gives us an introduction to energy and what that means for us as human beings. We are at our best when our energy is at a higher frequency and I'm happy to discover that joy is a key to raising our energy from slow and stagnant to a higher state.
If you want to find out more about Elisha you can find her at elisha-may.com and on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram as Elisha May.

Luisa is back with us and it was so great to have this long conversation with her about my latest favourite topic, joy. We talk about how we find joy, how we recognise it, how we make space for it and what we can do if we want more of it. It's a dive into the very essence of who we are and as Luisa says "Be who you want to be".
It's a long episode and if you've listened to our other episodes (the last one being Episode 48) you'll know we can chat! I hope you enjoy it and I'd love to know what you take away from it.

Robbie Leigh's work is totally aligned with mine and it was such a pleasure to have this conversation with her. She is warm, wise and wonderful (I love a bit of alliteration!).
Her journey to where she is now, doing her much needed work in the world began with debilitating health challenges that she is still working with today. She knew she had to make changes to her life and rather than find a new identity, she came to an awareness of who she truly is. I hope you find her as inspiring as I do.
You can find Robbie's website here and details of her Perfectionism to Peace programme here. She specialises in helping introverts and highly sensitives move from overwhelmed to empowered so they can step out of the shadows and bring their dreams to reality with courage and confidence. Go check her out.

Joy is my favourite topic, closely followed by freedom and in this episode I'm talking about them both.
In January 2017 when I lost a lot of the sight in my right eye, the unravelling that followed took me to therapy for 3 years. In therapy I learned how much my childhood trauma was weighing me down. I also learned how to put a lot of that trauma down and I experienced so much freedom as a result.
After the therapy I had to work out who I am now I am no longer caught up in all the trauma. I had to take a long look at how much my conditioning from my family and Society in general had shaped how I felt about myself and how I showed in the world. I learned how to put a lot of the conditioning down and experienced yet more freedom as a result.
Now I feel so much joy every day in those little moments that I would usually have been too busy to even notice. Those ordinary moments of the sun peeking through the clouds, the sun on my face, the smell of fresh coffee. The joy that comes with the freedom is immense.
What can you do today to start building freedom for yourself and what can you notice that will bring you joy? Let me know what you discover.

This is a simple episode about a complicated subject: estrangement from your family. It's not something that is talked about often, actually it's fairly taboo. After years of trying desperately hard to forge a meaningful relationship, I got to the stage where I felt I had no choice but to withdraw from my alcoholic mother. It was easier than being on the rollercoaster of dependency with her but it wasn't easy. There are complicated feelings of guilt, shame, relief and loss at play and it is not an easy option. For some, it feels like the only option and that's where I found myself in my early 30s. I have no regrets.

This is a deeply personal episode about my relationship with food, my body and myself. I have been meaning to record this for a while but have been putting it off. It felt important to talk about this but it also felt uncomfortable. Finally, I was ready.
I talk about how being put on a diet age 7 affected the way I felt about my body for a very long time. I also talk about how losing a lot of weight made me feel and how I feel that Society treats fat people really badly. I also talk about how healing my relationship with myself helped me feel so much better about my body and repaired my relationship with food.
Let me know what you think.

I recorded this episode when I was having a hard time with some of my relationships. I talk about how I worked through some of the things that were behind the part I was playing in what was going on and how I figured that out. I thought it was useful to talk about it on the podcast as it might help listeners see how they could work things out for themselves.
No matter how much work I've done, my past keeps coming back in and it's useful for us all to know that healing works in layers and there is often more to delve into. This was another layer for me and I started to unravel it by understanding that something was going on and noticing when it was happening. My healing journey continues and my most important tool at the moment is self-compassion. Self-compassion is so important in those moments when things aren't going so great.
I hope you enjoy this episode and find it helpful. Let me know what you think.

This episode is a conversation with the wonderful Martin (@coasaresuperheroes on Instagram). Like me, Martin is the child of an alcoholic, in fact alcoholics in Martin's case. We have some similarities in our stories and many differences and I am so pleased to bring his story to the podcast. It's so important to get our stories out into the world so others going through similar things know they're not alone.
Martin's self-awareness and determination to use his experience for good is impressive. The courage he shows in sharing his story is inspiring. There is so much in this conversation as we talk about, amongst other things, his childhood, shutting down emotions, the flood when the emotions are released, being in survivor mode, seeking perfection, forgiveness, role models and identity. We talk about feeling unworthy as it's hard to feel good about yourself when your parents "choose" alcohol over you. We also talk about the richness of community and the wonderful work of Nacoa (the National Association for Children of Alcoholics).
If you would like to support Nacoa by becoming a member, making a donation or any other way, you can find them at nacoa.org.uk and @nacoauk on Instagram.

In this episode I am talking about the layers of healing. How any healing or personal development journey takes place over time, a layer at a time.
Healing is not quick as time is needed to process and work out how to live with each new reality as a layer is uncovered. It's a wonderful journey of self-discovery and being really interested in how to find that true and best version of yourself that you can bring into the world as often as possible. Enjoy the process and celebrate moments of progress.
The best advice I can give I can give people who are doing their own personal work is that when it seems too hard to carry on, that is when you're on the brink of something and it's the time to dig in and stick with it.

Perfectionism and our drive to do our best. These two subjects came together in this episode after I recorded an interview for someone else's podcast about perfectionism and I listened to a podcast about the desire to do our best all the time.
I have always identified as a perfectionist and done this with a certain pride believing it was a good trait to want things to be "just so" all the time. The reality is that, for me, it comes from a place of feeling less than and the being perfect is about not standing out as being not good enough. However perfectionism shows up for us, it is exhausting and it's tough when I think about the time and energy I have wasted over the years trying to be "perfect".
So how about we stop trying to do our best all the time? How about we are just enough? What would it be like it we could accept who we are and know that's enough? Sounds good doesn't it!
Let me know what you think.

I've been meaning to talk about conditioning for a while and as it is coming up a lot in my client work at the moment, this seemed like a good time.
We are often so bound up in our conditioning that we don't even know it has happened, that it is happening and how it affects us.
By conditioning I mean the subtle, and often not so subtle, information, clues and ways that we learn to behave in our childhood to get our needs met. Needs such as love, care, attention, safety and many others. If we don't have emotionally present parents, we are likely to miss learning how to understand our needs, how to ask for them to be met and how to receive whatever it is we need. Instead we subconsciously learn how to manipulate our caregivers in the hope they will give us what we need. For me that was people-pleasing and being the "good girl".
My conditioning really showed up in my career as a lawyer, particularly in the early days, when I played the game of working hard and partying hard which I understood to be necessary if I wanted a job. How many other unwritten rules do we follow, or games do we play because we feel we have to? We often don't know where the conditioning started or where it came from and it takes courage (and support sometimes) to go against the rules, to fly in the face of what we have learned to be true. It can feel lonely and unsafe at times but there is great freedom and joy on the other side.
Is there anything you might do differently after listening to this episode? Something you might stop doing? Or start something new? Let me know, I really want to hear from you.

In this episode I'm talking about my understanding of what you will hear some people refer to as our inner critic and imposter syndrome. I'm really not a fan of the term "imposter syndrome" as I believe that is it actually fear and it's more helpful for healing to call it fear rather than label it as a "syndrome".
My inner critic has been very loud in the past and it mainly centred around my body. I am fat and I have always been fat. I knew this because of things my mother said, other people said and how society in general tells us that slim is acceptable, fat is not. I turned to food to fill the hole of not feeling acceptable and I wore big clothes to hide my body. Obviously as I got bigger the clothes got bigger and I became more noticeable which is the paradox of binge eating for comfort and wanting to be hidden. It makes life, feelings and relationships feel really complicated and lonely.
In the past, around all these body issues, has been shame and during my healing work I came to realise that my mean inner critic, that told me I should hide my body, that I shouldn't wear a bikini, that I shouldn't wear a vest top, was actually trying to shield me from the mean words and actions of others. If it got me to hide and cover up I wouldn't be subjected to as much ridicule. It was trying to protect me. That was such a big thing to learn. So the work is to try and understand what our inner critic is trying to protect us from and when we realise this we can start to heal.
I have found such joy, such acceptance and freedom to be myself that I now want to bring this to others. If you needed to hear this today, let me know what struck a chord with you.

In this episode I'm talking to Birgit Livesey, the creator and host of the Living on the B Side podcast, a place to showcase the power of music through people’s stories. Birgit has been a music lover all her life and in 2016 took the leap to give her passion a voice in the world.
Going from introverted teenager in Switzerland to confident Podcast host currently living in Melbourne/Australia, she wants to share her (and others') journey through life with the help of music. When she isn’t on the ‘B Side’, she spends time with her hubby and senior cat Richo, enjoying nature and diving into all things personal-development.
We talk about being an introvert and what it meant to Birgit growing up and how that has changed as she has learned more about introversion and herself. As Birgit says, it's not about being antisocial or always being in a corner with a book. It's about managing energy and generally introverts recharge alone whilst extroverts recharge in the company of others. Like most traits, introversion and extroversion is on a scale and where we are on that scale can vary. You may hear people who are midway on the scale being referred to as ambiverts. Understanding her introvert tendencies helped Birgit really step into the truest version of herself and those of you who are regular listeners will know that that is something I am very passionate about.
Thank you to Birgit for this fabulous conversation. Let me know what you enjoyed most about it.

This is quite a straight forward episode where I talk about the tiny steps way to write that my book coach, Sam Osbiston, and the leader of the Confident Creative Club, Helen Redfern, introduced me to. It is a way to break big tasks down into small steps that are more manageable and we can trick our brain into making progress towards the end goal.
We might have a wonderful thing to bring to the world but because the end seems so far away we don't start. I have stopped myself in the past for fear of looking stupid, fear of being the fat person who couldn't do something and not wanting to be disappointed by not achieving the goal. I have missed out as a result.
It was Sam's small steps approach that helped me write my book. It was the same when I started the Meeting of Minds podcast. It can help you start a healing journey, or anything else for that matter. Don't focus on the end and what it's going to take to get there, just take tiny steps.
We can't change others but we can change ourselves. We can do better for ourselves. We can honour ourselves. And we can do that by getting started and taking tiny steps.

Recently a client was telling me how great they felt after culling their "friends" on Facebook. They wanted to reduce it to a core group of people that they wanted to share their posts with and whose posts they wanted to see. They had been through the whole accumulating friends, and admitted the validation they felt because of it, but now they realised that not everyone's posts left them feeling good. As we were talking I realised that this is an act of radical self-care as well as establishing boundaries.
In this episode I talk more about boundaries and how I see them. I also talk about what we think might happen if we put boundaries in place. Being clear about who you let into your inner world and who you don't is a self-honouring act and also one of self-care. Something many of us don't do enough of, in my opinion.
It is not selfish to honour what you need. If we are looking to make changes, it can be helpful to reflect on how our past might have conditioned us to be how we are. Extreme planning, for instance, stops us being in the moment, being able to be in flow and stops us being open to fun, joyful and impactful moments. I was a planner and a few years ago I had the constant thought of "there must be more to life than this" running through my head.
I had ticked off all the boxes of what I was told should make me happy - career, husband, house, kids, dog - and I was miserable. It's very confusing when everyone tells you how well you're doing but you feel dead inside. I had a deep desire to know that there was something more.

This is a really "live" episode for me as I work through my feelings of being a mother to teenagers as I go through the menopause.
It's a bit of a rant about the diminishing language that is used around women going through the menopause, in fact around women and hormones in general, as well of the complexities I am experiencing as I navigate mothering teenagers. There is a lot of diminishing language used around teenagers too and I am guilty of that as well. Perhaps I have more in common with my teenagers than I realise.
There is no manual for parenting or the menopause and I struggle sometimes. My main struggle is that I seem to have lost the filter that has kept me in check over the years and not everyone on the other end of my filter-less speak likes it. Losing this filter is also a result of the work I have done over the last 5 years and it seems my true self has a lot to say!!
It's one of the episodes where I process as I speak. It's a talk I needed to have with myself out loud and I hope it helps you too.
And in case you're wondering, I did apologise to the chair helper.

I start this episode telling you the story of my sickly plant and end with telling you that no-one is more important than you. It's true.
If you don't look after yourself then you're not going to be able to look after others so by always putting others first not only are you not there for yourself but overtime you will be less able to be there for others. Nursing my poorly plant back to health, once I knew what it needed, clearly demonstrated to me my own journey of working out my own needs and making sure they get met.
How many of us tend to the needs of others instead of our own? And how many feel frustrated, overwhelmed, taken for granted, angry? I felt all those things but now I have learned to put myself first, my life is full of moments of joy. I want the same for you.

Recently, I experienced the early signs of burnout. I have suffered burnout several times before and I now know the early signs for me. This is the first time I have stopped and taken stock at an early stage and I'm so glad I did. That's why I've done an episode about burnout and it's close relatives overwhelm and stress.
I had to decide if it's the work I'm doing or the way I'm doing that needs to change and luckily I realised it's the way I'm doing. That is such a relief after 2 years of working in and on my own business. I've stripped back the things I do as I've been doing too much and as a result not concentrating on anything properly. I'm now doing this podcast, writing and working with my clients. The podcast is on YouTube as well now so I can reach more people.
In this episode I talk about:
the relationship between stress, overwhelm and burnout
my relationship with them all
the most usual signs of burnout
ways to recover from burnout
how to avoid burnout in the future

This episode was inspired by an innocent comment someone made about my skin. It seems my skin looks younger than my age while my silver hair makes me look older. I'm sure we all have ideas about what we "should" look like at a certain age and the way we view others will be shaped by those ideas. I wonder, though, does that make the ageing process more tricky to navigate as we try to counter what we think others will think of us? Would it be nicer if we could age into who we are and be confident and happy with who that is? Are we more used to thinking how other people see us rather than working out how we see ourselves?
I'm really interested and I'd love to know what you think. Let me know.

Following on from last week when I asked "Can women really have it all?", in this episode I am talking about the heavy load of doing all the thinking that, I think, largely falls on women.
I start off talking about the mind, body and soul connection and how listening to our inner self (rather than the voice in our head which is largely fuelled by external influences) can help us make more aligned decisions. I then move on to talk about the heavy duty thinking that is often required before action is taken and how that tends to fall to women. We think about all the things that need to be done and when they need doing by but it is the actual action that gets recognition whilst the heavy duty thinking goes unnoticed. I think that needs to change. What do you think?

This episode was inspired by a conversation with a client about how there are not enough women talking about this idea that we can "have it all". We are sold the idea that we can have a career, a family, a social life and good relationships all round. But can we?
Here I explore that idea and how it is has shown up in my life so far. I hope this helps you reflect on how it shows up for you and/or the women in your life. Let me know what you discover.

I have really enjoyed making new friends over the last 5 years. They are not better or worse than my old friends but they are different. I have one friend that has been in my life for 46 years, another for 41 years and a few more for over 30 years. They know the me I used to be. The new friends I have made in the last 5 years know the new me and it has been much easier to bring the new me to these new friendships. Some of my old friendships wavered for a while and whilst they are great now there was a period of adjustment, mainly for me as I navigated how to be the new me in those old relationships.
In this episode I talk about all those things and more. The message I want you to take away is that it's never too late to make new friends and be open to the possibility.

In February 2022 I recorded a podcast episode with Berit Naomi Skjernaa and she kindly agreed to me releasing the recording here so you can listen to it.
The notes for the episode say "I was so fortunate to run across Philippa during our intensive work on coaching with Willow, and found that we have so many similarities in how we have started untangling our soul late in life. We have both realised that it is never too late to release our childhood traumas, how our inner child have never given up on getting our attention, and when the journey has begun, we will never turn back and are relentless in our pursuit of our truth and authenticity."
The Soul Untangled is a spiritual energetic where Berit discusses with her guests the entanglements we have around our soul, and how to untangle and connect to the deep wisdom of our soul. Here is a link to the podcast on Spotify The Soul Untangled Podcast

The end of Series 4 is here and here is a solo episode to finish. I've really enjoyed the great conversations I've had this series and I'd love to know which you've enjoyed.
I've had one question from a listener that I respond to. The question is what to do if your child self-diagnoses themselves with a mental illness with the help of Dr Google. I am not a mental health expert but I respond from my perspective of a mother to teenage boys.
I also read from the introduction and end to my new ebook, I see You (You are enough). It's the things I needed to hear when I was in a dark place 5 years ago. The book is free on my website and you can sign up here Click here to get the ebook, I See You

Sam Osbiston is the wonderful book coach who helped me birth my book, I See, Me, last year. Without her, my book simply wouldn't exist.
In this episode I talk to Sam about what creativity means to her, how writing helped her on her healing path and how it is now her work as well as her pleasure. She passionately tells us how creativity is everywhere and we don't give it enough credit. Sam also talks about her love of nature and how she feels deeply about the work that needs to be done to stop further destruction of our planet.

I wish I had Sacha's energy! And I find her zest for her mission palpable.
Sacha is another HSP I met via Willow's training. Sacha introduced me to the trait of high sensation seeking and in this episode she tells us how she believes the meeting of those two traits is the GOLDEN TICKET for life. It is something to be embraced and celebrated not hidden.
Neither of us grew up knowing anything about high sensitivity, or high sensory intelligence, although Sacha describes an awareness of shame and weakness associated with sensitivity which is a common experiences for HSPs.
Later in life she had an awakening that there was nothing wrong with her but there was a disconnect between how she presented and what she wanted. So began her quest for understanding. Once Sacha found the HSP trait it was another step to discover high sensation seeking. The golden ticket.
If you are on a similar quest, Sacha's message is to keep going because it's so worth it. Her mission is to bring awareness of high sensory intelligence and high sensation seeking to as many people as she can, so spread the word!

Discovering I am a HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) has been a big part of my healing journey and Willow McIntosh has played a big part in the uncovering of my HSP gifts. I invited Willow onto the podcast because I wanted him to share his expertise in this area with you.
As HSPs, discovering and understanding our sensitivity helps us to find happiness and bring meaning to our life. That has definitely been my experience. There can be negative connotations around sensitivity but it doesn't have to be like that. HSPs have great gifts to bring to the world and Willow and I hope to inspire you to not get caught in your own soup and to embrace your gifts.
Even if you are not a HSP, you may have family and friends who are HSPs and also as non-HSPs I think you will get something from this conversation. You'll hear how much I got from it as you listen and I hope you do too.

Helen Redfern created the Confident Creative Club in 2021 and it has become a haven for a bunch of fabulous, sensitive, like-minded people. The success of the club is down to Helen's open, honest and down-to-earth approach to the messy process of being creative. No beating yourself up is allowed; it's about building confidence one step at a time. I absolutely love being a part of it.
Helen talks with so much wisdom in our conversation and that's because she is walking the path of confidence building too. She is a true beacon of light for people looking for her kind of care and attention. She encourages everyone to do what you love, embrace who you are, with your personality, with your writing voice. Just be you.

Trigger warning - in this episode we talk about bullying (at school), anxiety, OCD, grief and childhood trauma.
This is a really open chat with Suzanne where she tells us how the lack of understanding around her high sensitivity as a child led her to some unhelpful behaviour patterns as an adult, how the bullying at school had a profound effect on her and how bottling all this up and the grief she felt when her dad passed away led to OCD and anxiety. Suzanne's situation is now much better than it was and she wants to share all this with you in case it might help you with something you are going through. It's a really important conversation.

Reading the Sea Glass trilogy in December 2021 was very definitely a case of right books, right time for me. Melanie Leavey has created a powerful reading experience with her glorious books (which now include the prequel to the trilogy) and it was a joy to talk to her. Mel has a variety of creative outlets; her love of painting helps her de-stress from writing until the weather gets better for gardening. This is her "ever revolving merry-go-round of delights". Love it. We talk about how expectations affect our creativity and how different creative outlets satisfy different needs in us. I really enjoyed finding out about her writing process. We discover that we both give lives to inanimate objects. We talk about the cross-over between high sensitivity and creativity. This conversation filled up my well for sure.

In this episode I'm talking to Ambre Tandy, an empath, an energetic healer and all round great gal. Growing up required Ambre to be quiet, and she talks us through her journey, via the navy and the seminary, to find the truth of who she really is. She realised she wasn't born wrong and started her quest to work out why people had told her she was wrong. What she found is radical intuition and how to do things her way and not anyone else's way. This conversation is full of spirit and courage and I hope it will inspire you to live your one precious life your way.
You can find Ambre at https://empoweredperceptions.inluminance.com/ and on LinkedIn where you'll find her as Ambre Tandy..

Jacquie is the outdoor girl. Our conversation meandered from the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales, to writing and acceptance of our creativity and to all things outdoors. Like me, Jacquie left her corporate job for a different way of life and we talk about how amazing that is but also the challenges it brings. Problem-solving, here in relation to climbing, is creative as is bringing a little bit of adventure into our every day. Being in the mountains gives Jacquie a sense of perspective, her place in the world, and helps her rebalance, reset and give her a sense of who she is. Most of all it feels like freedom.

This is the 50th Episode. 50! When I started I didn't know how long I would be able to keep finding things to talk about but I'm still going strong. Thank you to all my fabulous listeners because without you there would be no point in me doing this.
To mark this occasion I invited a very special guest for a chat. I'm not going to tell you anything about them as I don't want to spoil the surprise. I hope you like it.
Discovering and embracing that I am a highly sensitive person (HSP) has been a big part of my healing journey and in this episode I am talking to Julie Aird who is an HSP too. We talk candidly about our different journeys discovering we are HSPs, our daily experience of living with this amazing trait and the self-care techniques that keep our tanks full to avoid being in perpetual crisis management mode.
Learning about the HSP personality trait has helped both of us embrace the people we really are rather than who we have been in told in the past we should be. We both see high sensitivity as a great gift and it is an amazing ability and strength to use in our work as coaches.
Around 1 in 5 people have the HSP trait and around 30% of HSPs are more extroverted with the other 70% leaning towards introversion. Julie is the extrovert and I'm the introvert and we talk about the stereotypical idea of a sensitive introvert versus what it is actually like for us every day as HSPs. We also talk about how to look after ourselves as HSPs to make sure we are at our best so we can be there for others.

This is a bonus episode to tell you about my new 4 week course starting on Wednesday 16/02/2022 at 7pm for 90 minutes. It's going to be a kind, gentle and loving space to explore and heal.
Click the link below for more details. Message me if you want to know more.
If you are being called to join this course, I'm waiting to hear from you.

Luisa is back with us again. Her message today is that we all have creativity in us. We choose our clothes, how our hair looks, our home décor and so many other things every day that require us to be creative. Anything that brings us joy, makes us think outside of the box and brings us back to ourselves is creativity, even if we're not producing something or doing a particular activity.
For those of you like Luisa who spend a lot of the working week on a screen, you may prefer to do something creative away from a screen. Cooking is a creative outlet for a lot of people, even though they might not see it as such, and is away from a screen (even if you are checking an online recipe most of the time you are not on the screen).
Getting a balance between creative time and earning money, as well as creative time on and away from a screen, is a balance and where that lies is different for everyone. Do what is right for you because what you learn about yourself in your creative endeavours will inevitably filter into other areas of your life.

Fellow COA Josh Connolly is a Nacoa ambassador, Resilience Coach and a general all round fabulous human being. It was such a treat to talk to him and this conversation is full of such good stuff. Josh tells us about discovering that COA is a thing and we go on to talk about the many ways us COAs are affected by our parents' drinking and none of them are actually the alcohol. As Josh says in our chat, if we are able to dive deep enough it all makes sense and allows us to have great self-compassion for ourselves. This is transformative stuff.
COAs experience trauma and yes that trauma has an impact but what has the greatest impact is that the very people who were supposed to make us feel safe and loved in all our emotions weren't able to do that and so we grow up not feeling lovable in all our emotions. We also talk about the part our sensitivity plays in our experience.
Controversially, as it turns out, I talk about the freedom I found from being estranged from my alcoholic mother and her subsequent passing away. It was my ultimate act of survival, not that I realised that at the time.
Check out Nacoa (nacoa.org.uk) if anything in this episode resonates with you as there are so many resources available to help COAs, no matter where you are on your journey.

I came across Elaine in an online writing group we both joined and we started following each other on Instagram. We would comment on each other's posts and in November she took part in a 3o day gratitude challenge where she posted every day with a different word as the day's prompt. I loved her posts and asked her to come on the podcast. She posts on Instagram as @postive_prickles and she started her account as an outlet for her writing after leaning into a nudge from inside herself to do it. "Why not?" she thought and it was another "Why not?" that saw her agree to talk to me. Can you try the "Why not" approach to an opportunity that comes your way? It's interesting that in being open to opportunities they seem to find us.
We talk about our difficulties identifying as writers, what Elaine gets from her writing and how it helps her connect with her true inner self. She also talks about the connections she has made through her writing and how it helps the people reading but also herself. It's a win win. We talk about what bravery and courage look like for introverts as opposed to extroverts and as introverts how important it is to learn to say yes to things that work for us and no to things that don't. And that is ok. Realising that our interpretation of things as children can limit our view as adults is a real aha moment and that if we can be open to change those interpretations many more things become possible. I loved this conversation and I hope you do too.

Jen Payne is a fellow volunteer with Nacoa and I was so pleased when she agreed to come on the podcast and have a chat with me. She is honest, wise and such an inspiration in the way she shares her story to help other COAs. She talks how her life has been massively affected by her mum's drinking and she bravely tells us how she navigates the tricky waters around her relationship with her family. She talks about the impact on her of the generational trauma in her family that has led to many of her family members being dependent on alcohol. We talk about the taboo of talking about a parent's drinking and how it's a family secret that keeps everyone locked in their own, mainly traumatic, experience of it. Jen and I, like the other wonderful people out there who are also talking about it, want to talk about our experiences in the hope that it will help other COAs.
Jen has so many good things to say in this episode and like she says, as a COA we are part of the worst and the best club. Jen is a true example of why being in the COA club is the best club because I get to meet fabulous people like Jen. Jen's dog joined in with our chat on a couple of occasions and the internet had a little wobble or two and I hope that doesn't spoil your enjoyment of this powerful episode. I really hope you get something from this chat.

This is the last episode of series 3 and the last episode of 2021. It’s actually Episode 44 even though I say it’s 42 at the beginning!
On the day this episode is released, it's exactly 12 months since I released the intro episode. I am so proud of what I have achieved with this podcast this year and you listeners have been part of that journey. Thank you for sharing this with me. I will be back in January with series 4 and I intend to return with some solo episodes but some with guests as well. In this episode I talk about my response to these questions:
As you might have come to expect, I had a fair bit to say on these subjects! I share my experiences and things I have learned along the way. I am still on this journey and am still learning too.

In this episode I talk about my childhood experience of Christmas and how that has shaped a lot of my adult Christmases. Like a lot of other people, it's not a time I looked forward to and I'd go as far as to say I dreaded it for a long time. The dread was mainly about the inevitable disappointment that it would be rubbish, again. I also talk about how my experience of the festive season has changed over the last 5 years and how I have come to not exactly love it but at least not dread it. Like most things, it's a work in progress.
If, like me, your experience of Christmas is not what we see on the TV and in films, this episode may sound familiar. I also hope it brings you some comfort to know you're not alone at what can be a difficult time of year for many.

My self-published book, I See, Me, went live on Amazon on 30 November 2021. It has been 12 months in the writing, rewriting, beta reading, formatting and cover designing. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions as I really felt into my childhood trauma and looked at it again from my perspective now as an adult. It has helped me enormously and I have released the story into the world so it can help whoever else needs to read it.
To celebrate I invited Luisa back to the podcast (remember Luisa from Series 1?) and she asks me some deeply personal questions about my experience writing this book. It was a joy to talk about this work with Luisa and I hope you enjoy our conversation.

I believe that finding the truest version of ourselves (or versions as we can all adopt variations of our true self depending on the situation - there will always be the same core elements of us in all these version) is the greatest gift we can give ourselves. In this episode I'm talking about how I found the truest version of myself (so far - the journey continues) after I came to terms with my childhood trauma, growing up as a COA (Child of An Alcoholic) and understanding how my wounded inner child was driving my adult behaviour. It has been quite a ride over the last 5 years.
I talk about the two people who have inspired me in my liberation of this truer version of myself and helped me embrace that I am a HSP (Highly Sensitive Person). I am not too sensitive. I process information deeply. Learning to calm my nervous system helps me avoid the severe overwhelm I frequently experienced before I embraced my sensitivity super power. This episode is mainly about these two amazing people and the challenges they face daily. I don't want to spoil the surprise of who these people are!

In this episode I'm talking about how things can change. I recorded this episode on what would have been my mum's 74th birthday and it's an example of how things have changed for me. I have compassion and love for her now which I seldom felt whilst she was alive.
So far in this series I have talked about some of the individual things I have learned on my healing journey. Today I talk about the big picture of my healing and tell you two little stories that perfectly illustrate what it has done for me.
I also talk about the difference between emotions and feelings and getting stuck in a loop. "Humaning is a complicated experience and we all get stuck in those loops." We make up a story that might not be true and we then get stuck in that story.

In this episode I'm talking about another impactful wounding, this time it's the mother wound. It will come as no surprise to regular listeners that I have personal experience of this too. I talk about how we all have a mother wound, at a personal level, to some degree and at the society level all women have this wound as the patriarchy, which largely finds women "less than" their male counterparts, distorts the mother-daughter relationship and leads mothers to help their daughters survive in a world where women are not valued as much as men. Discovering this was a tough thing to take in but it also made perfect sense to me. It's an interesting time to be a woman, I think, as patriarchal beliefs are showing themselves to be dysfunctional and they don't work for women or men. Times are changing, albeit slowly.
I talk more about the mother wound from the personal level and how it isn't just people like me, who had an alcoholic mother, that experience this wound but many other people for whom it is a less obvious wound. If you feel low after seeing your mother, feel pressure to speak to her or spend time with her or you dread seeing her, these are all signals that something is off. I also talk about that no matter how hard we try to change ourselves, make ourselves small, be compliant or try to please her, it we will never be enough as it's her wound to heal not ours. It becomes our wound too if we get stuck in it.
This was a powerful episode for me to record and I hope you take away that your life is yours to live to it's fullest potential rather than playing small to appease a mother wound, if that is what is happening.

In this episode I'm talking about the wound of abandonment. Like everything I've talked about so far on the podcast, I have personal experience of this wound as my father left, and was persuaded to stay away, when I was about 6. All I knew was that my dad had gone, I didn't really know why and I really missed him. Life carried on and it is only relatively recently that I have been able to see how much this abandonment affected me. It has shaped who I was and who I am now ,every bit as much as my mum's drinking.
Abandonment wounds, left unaddressed, can significantly impact adult functioning and interpersonal relationships. Abandonment is a primal fear and the anxiety that originated from my early abandonment experience left me feeling like I couldn't count on others to take care of me or be there for me in the way I needed. It resulted in me disconnecting from others, not asking for support, not accepting support when it was offered and not letting people get too close (amongst other things). Healing the wound has allowed me to step into a much truer version of myself and experience meaningful connections. I also talk about other ways the abandonment wound shows up.

It's another hefty episode this week as I'm talking about codependency. This is at the heart of any family or relationship involving alcoholism or other addiction. Discovering codependency was the start of my healing journey.
I was introduced to the book "Codependent No More" by Melody Beattie and it changed my life. It was painful to read as it shone a light on a lot of what I had avoided looking at but by the end of the book it made me realise how much I had been affected by my mum's drinking. I used to talk about my past in a glib way and brush it off with "but it wasn't that bad really" and I now know this is very common for the children of addicts. When I realised that what I had experienced was not ok and it was in fact a codependent relationship, I could start to heal.
In this episode I talk about how I experienced my path to better understanding my relationship with my mum as well as how I have dealt with starting to put boundaries in place in my life, starting with my teenagers!

In this episode I am continuing to talk about trauma and today I talk about my experience of generational trauma in my family of origin.
If we experience a trauma response (such as anxiety, sleeping issues, disconnection, disordered eating) but can't seem to understand why, it may be that it is generational trauma, a trauma response passed down to us from our parents, grandparents or other family members. We may not directly experience the trauma response to some harm that happened to us but the behaviour was passed down to us, often subconsciously.
I talk about the many way this can happen as well as my personal experience. How I realised, eventually, that some of my mum's behaviour wasn't because she didn't love or because I wasn't a good enough child but because of her trauma response to her upbringing and also the behaviour passed down to her parents by previous generations.

In this episode I talk about why we might choose to go through the healing process after experiencing trauma. It was a big shock to realise that what I experienced in my childhood was trauma and neglect, after a lifetime of brushing it off and down playing the experience. Like many other people who grow up in similar circumstances, I learnt to abandon my own needs in favour of pleasing my caregivers because I relied on them to stay alive. The reality, though, is that it was not ok and my reaction to what happened had stayed in my body for decades.
I talk about how I came to start my healing. After years or running away from jobs and relationships, when I got married and had children I found life getting more difficult instead of better. My body tried hard to get me to slow down and heal but I refused to listen so my body gave me something I couldn't ignore. So began my healing journey and discovering that there is so much more to life than I had experienced so far. I finally feel free to be me and I can't put into words how great it is to be able to say that.

I am fascinated how as human beings we are multi-faceted and in this episode I talk about how different people know us in different ways. Our parts play a bigger or smaller role in our lives over the years. I was reminded of this recently by a friend who was telling me about the different parts people knew of his mum and it took me straight back to my mum's funeral 3 years ago when people were telling me how fabulous and kind and sunny she was when all I felt was anger. Angry for many reasons but my complicated relationship with my mum certainly played a part. On the whole, I failed to have a relationship with my mum as an adult as we were estranged for much of the time and that came with a whole range of emotions, then and now. I talk about how I hated looking in the mirror and seeing her staring back at me (we looked very similar) and during the episode I had a realisation of probably how similar we were.
Acceptance of my parts and understanding them more has helped me a lot over the last 5 years. The main way is the awareness that my big reactions come from a very young part of me and I now know to give that part love and compassion. I also talk about how my frozen inner child has played a massive part in my life over the years and the unfreezing and integration with my adult part has been transformational. So much so that my highly critical inner voice has now become kind and soothing as I found out recently limping around a 10k course.

Last week I talked about my decision to go to counselling and what that was like for me. This week I talk about what the sessions were actually like, some of the methods my counsellor used, what I found helpful and how I sometimes spent a session just crying. It's all part of the process. I wanted to talk about this as I think not knowing what a session is like might sometimes be a barrier for people who need help seeking that help. This episode is an attempt to let you know about what you can expect but I also say that this is my experience of therapy and yours might be very different.
If you have any questions about therapy please get un touch. If anything in this episode stirs anything up for you that you want to talk about, please get in touch. Or just get in touch anyway. I'd love to hear from you.

Series 3 is here! Lots of you have been listening to back episodes during the break and I hope you've been enjoying them.
The most popular episodes in Series 2 were Episode 19 - COA is a thing and Episode 31 - Listener's Questions. In this series I will be looking more at my experience of having an alcoholic parent and my healing journey.
I start this series with this episode about therapy. I talk about my experience of therapy - or counselling. I talk a lot about the therapy work I started in 2017 but I also talk about my earlier experiences of dipping my toe in, albeit without much commitment. Back then I thought perhaps therapy wasn't for me but now I know timing is everything.
What I didn't say in the recording, but meant to, is that change is possible without therapy or coaching as I know not everyone has access to that support. This podcast has helped people see things in a different light, there are many other great podcasts and SOOO many books and articles. If you are committed to the work but can't access in person help, get in touch and I can suggest some books (and they won't all be by Brené Brown!!)

Series 2 is done and here is the last episode. I have loved putting this series together and will be back after a short break with series 3. Thank you to all of you have supported me.
I asked for questions from listeners and got three real corkers. Quality over quantity for sure. In this episode I talk about my response to these question:
Thank you to the lovely listeners who sent me these questions. There was so much I had to say on these subjects that this episode is a bit longer than usual! I had so much to say as I share my experiences and things I have learned along the way. I am still on this journey and am still learning too.

In this episode I talk about one of my favourite subjects, self-care. I mean deep self-care, not grooming or appearance maintenance.
When I started on my healing journey 4 years ago, I had no bloomin' idea what self-care was but having discovered the importance of it I talk about it a lot. It was fitting that I end this season with self-care and how practising self-care helps us look inside ourselves and discover the truth of what we actually need. Once we identify those needs we can set about meeting them which in turn makes us a more content human. What's not to like!
If we aren't meeting our needs we aren't bringing our best selves into our daily lives and not only are we abandoning ourselves by doing that but we are less able to meet the needs of others which is the reason we give ourselves in the first place for abandoning ourselves. So come on folks, self-care all the way. I encourage you to think about the ways in which you abandon yourself and instead to write a list of things you can do to reconnect with your fabulous self.
At the end I ask for your questions for me to answer in next week's episode which will be the last of season 2. I'd love to hear from you.

In this episode I talk about shame. Not a particularly happy subject but I felt it important to tackle it this week. At it's core, shame keeps us small and quiet and stops us showing up in the world as our true authentic selves. This leads to resentment and real unhappiness in later life. I share a real-life shame moment that happened the day I recorded the episode and how sharing it helped me feel much better. Empathy is the antidote to shame and I had empathy for myself just sharing it with you. The word I couldn't find as i was recording is "indulging"!

In this episode I talk menopause. I am by no means an expert but as a peri-menopausal woman who has been experiencing symptoms for around 5 years now, I know I felt ill placed to deal with what was happening when it started and I want to help get information out so other women are better informed. I talk about the stages of peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause, tracking your menstrual cycle and the common and not so common symptoms. I don't talk about HRT as I have no experience to share.
I talk about my experience so far and how I am finding this stage of my life liberating, frustrating and a time of real change which I am embracing. I appreciate I am having an ok time of it now but if you are struggling, I get it and I see you.

In this episode I talk about my old nemesis, burnout. It's a long episode this week as I wanted to share the findings of my research. I talk about the differences between stress and burnout as I think the two are often confused. I share how to recognise the signs of burnout and tips on how to deal with it.
Burnout paid me a visit again recently but now I recognise my signs I managed to rest before it really took hold. I hope this episode will help you avoid it or at least be more aware if it does strike.

In this episode I explore why some of the new habits I have started during the last 18 months have stuck and why some are proving to be harder to stick to. I sat down one day and journalled about it and realised that if I push myself too hard it doesn't stick. I need to give myself options and tell myself it's ok to do it or not do it. This is particularly true if it's something that I find difficult. Giving myself the choice frees me from the pressure that comes when I push myself too hard.
I also talk about Saturn Return which in astrology is the time that Saturn returns to the position it was in at the time of your birth. It can have quite an impact during your late 20s and early 30s.

In this episode I talk about how a long overdue swim in the sea one weekend lead me to really think about freedom and what it means to me. Freedom from what other people think of me along with acceptance of where I am now and how far I've come from where I started in 2017. It was so much more than just a swim in the sea! I hope it will inspire you to consider what freedom means for you and better still takes steps towards that freedom.

In this episode I tell you the story of how I met my husband and how it might never have happened if I hadn't found a way round my worry about what other people might think. In this episode I talk about the difference between courage and bravery, how they both show up in my life and how practising them, like practising any new skill, makes progress. It's tough but the truth is no-one is coming to rescue us, fix us or save us so if we want to experience life differently we have to show up in new ways and that usually takes courage.

It was my wedding anniversary recently and I was thinking about the years we have been together and my pattern of running away - from relationships, from jobs, from myself. In this episode I explore that pattern, where I think it has come from and how it is has played out over the years. It is an emotional one for me but I have left it as recorded, exactly as it happened. I hope you find this episode useful and/or helpful if you or someone you love has a similar pattern.

I have been through many transitions in my life - leaving home, qualifying as a solicitor, getting married, having children, leaving my career after my breakdown. They have mainly been messy and sometimes tough but they have made me who I am. The big question of Who am I? caused me a lot of angst a few years ago and was part of my biggest transformation so far. I talk about what transitions have been like for me and how I came to discover the answer to Who I am? It is still a work in progress but I am moving in a good direction. I hope what I talk about might help you, or someone you know, if you or they are in a similar place.

In this episode I talk about some of the labels I have discovered for myself over the last 4 years of my personal development. Some of them are labels that help me understand past behaviour patterns more, some of them are labels that go to the very core of who I am. I also touch on labels that relate to my children. Overall I find labels helpful as they help me understand but I also know that many don't like labels and I think that is mainly as a reaction to not wanting labels to the limit the possibilities of the person to whom the label is being applied. I wholeheartedly agree with that. I don't usually think of labels in that way but I am sensitive to other peoples feelings around them. What do you think?

COA is a thing! Did you know that? I didn't until 2016 when I was 47 and I am a COA. I am a Child Of an Alcoholic. I am an ACOA, an Adult Child Of an Alcoholic. Discovering this has been a huge part of my healing, and although it has been hard at times, I am so glad to have been on this journey. I talk about my childhood as a COA, how it affected me as an adult and how it still does to this day. Knowing about it has helped me understand myself more and make changes for better. It has been tough but worth it. If you are an ACOA know that it isn't just you and you are not alone.

Before I discovered I am a HSP I went through a period of 3 years or so unravelling the old version of myself and finding a new version. A big part of that journey was discovering the power of vulnerability, mainly powered by the work of Brené Brown. I talk about some of the people who have helped me along the way and although I don't actually name people, if you listen you know who you are. Thank you.
When I started to record I was going to talk about something different but this episode is what came out so I just rolled with it. It seemed like the right thing to do. My hope is that some of you listening to this episode will recognise some of what I am saying and know that it is not just you feeling that way. You are not alone.

In this episode I'm talking about my discovery that I am a HSP, a highly sensitive person. After my breakdown in 2017 and 3 years of therapy I started to discover who I really am. Behind the mask and under the armour I discovered traits that led me to the realisation that I am a HSP. I am still learning about this trait that is believed to apply to approximately 1 in 5 people. It has helped me embrace the parts of me that had led the childhood me to believe that I was broken, defective in some way. I carried this belief with me until only a few years ago and that's a lot of years. Too many!
I am amazed that I have discovered that I am HSP at a time when I am embracing a new work life as a coach that enables me to use my HSP traits in a positive way. The universe is very definitely showing me the way. I now know much better what I need to do to look after myself, so I am able to use my gifts. Self-care is a must for us HSPs.

In this episode I'm talking about role models in my life, or rather the lack of them. It started from a comment I made on a friend's Instagram post about not really knowing men and I realised I don't really know women either which made me then realise I didn't have anyone to look up to growing up as a role model for the person I wanted to be. Being proud of myself and my work was certainly something i didn't see modelled in a way that was meaningful to me and pride is something I am now learning about as I work more on my current projects and in my new business. It is totally new to me to feel proud about what I am doing. I also didn't have role models for relationships, managing conflict and following my own path and that is something I am still learning. Every day is a school day! I really appreciate the role models I have now and it's never too late.

Series 2 is here and this episode is an account of my personal takeaways from creating Series 1. Series 2 is going to be much more of me talking about my life lessons, things that interest me and sharing things I think might be useful. It is a struggle for me to be this open about my experiences but it is something i want to share and I want to feel more comfortable sharing so I'm pulling on my courage pants and going for it. There is some annoying clicking throughout this recording which I'm really sorry about but I felt to rerecord would lose some of the spontaneity.
I was inspired to record this episode by Gina Isabella Simone (@gina_isabella_simone) and Charlotte Hughes (@littlelotteclothes) and by the work of Colleen Perry (@ImpactedByAlcoholism), Josh Connolly (@josh_ffw) and NACOA (@nacoauk). Those handles are all Instagram and thank you to all of you.

For this last episode of series 1 I am rounding up the rest of the advice sent to me that the senders would give their 20 something self. My aim with this series was to provide some normality to the experience of the 20s as it’s a tough decade. I wanted to show that there is no right or wrong way, it’s easy to get bogged down in what you think you should be doing rather than what you want although most people don’t even know what they want. And that is ok. It’s about trying things out for size to see what fits best. Luisa and I have done 4 episodes on travel, gut instinct, relationships and money as these were clear themes that came out from the comments sent to me. There were also a lot of other random comments and one of those was from someone who said they wished they’d taken notice of the words in the Baz Luhrman song Everybody’s Free (most people know it as the sunscreen song). So what I have decided to do is go through the words of the song piece by piece and at appropriate times add in other related advice that I received. I thought this sounded like a fun thing and I hope you enjoy it.
I have really enjoyed putting these 14 episodes together for Series 1. First of all a huge thanks to Jay who produced this series for me. Without him it would not have sounded anywhere as good as it does. Thanks also to Jay and Alex who wrote the intro music for me which I love. I feel very lucky to have had their support. A massive thank you to Luisa who has been on 5 of the episodes with me and we had such a good time recording together. I’m crossing my fingers and my toes that she’ll come back again next series.
Thank you to you, you lovely listeners for spending some time with me in your ears listening to my new podcast. At a time when we are so busy and free time is rare I appreciate you spending some of it listening to this podcast. Thank you.
I’m taking a break for a little while to decide what direction to take the podcast in series 2. Luisa is here for the last time this series and we're talking about money - how easy it is to get credit, the pitfalls to try and avoid when starting work and earning money, not getting into debt for anyone else and not being jealous about what other people have. I hope you enjoy this conversation.

Following the first 9 Episodes recorded back in December 2020, I asked some friends, who asked their friends, for any advice they would give their 20s self or wish they'd known or did know and found it helpful. I was inundated with replies! I grouped them together and pulled out the common threads and a mini series to finish off series 1 was born.

This is my conversation with Cléa. I only met Cléa late in 2020 so it was a privilege to spend time getting to know her better. She is interesting, open and warm. We talk about her struggles as a teenager, making it past the age of 27, moving from performing music to being a music therapist, arriving at her autism diagnosis, writing her novel and the importance of being creative. This is my conversation with Dani. She is warm, open, honest and courageous.
I want you to know that we talk about some subjects you might find difficult - anxiety, depression, catastrophic brain injury and we make a passing reference to suicidal thoughts. If these subjects are not ok for you today then please don't listen. Your mental health is more important.
We talk about the rollercoaster that was Dani's 20s, going big (instead of going home) as Wonder Woman, how the life of her family changed in a moment when her father was attacked and suffered a catastrophic brain injury and how she is learning to be the best of herself which means all of herself including her shadow side. I was so impressed with Dani and she rendered me speechless a few times (which is no mean feat).

I am starting this series with a solo episode recalling my 20s and how I strived to fit in - my career was going ok but I found my personal life a struggle. I had no idea who I was and how I fitted in. This meant I moved around a lot looking for a place to fit in. To be honest that stayed with me for a long time, well into my 30s. Bit by bit I have pieced things together and now have a better sense of who I am and where I fit in. As I'm 51 you could call me a bit of a later starter but better late than never!
