There is so much emphasis in society placed on what can or can't be seen with our eyes and if we can’t see well then that is considered to be a problem.

I wonder what would happen and what we could achieve if we focused on developing how we see with our hearts and minds instead of our eyes?

SIX STEPS TO FINDING CLARITY AFTER A DIAGNOSIS OF SIGHT LOSS - FREE AUDIO COACHING GUIDE

Dave Steele is an award-winning poet, author, public speaker, singer, and advocate for the blind. Diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) in 2014, this genetic eye condition left Dave “severely sight impaired.” Together with his wife, Amy, the family grappled with the difficult diagnosis as RP quickly left Steele an unemployed father of four.

Feeling the stressors of financial debt and the loss of his independence, Dave turned to social media for support with his RP journey. He was also struck by the numerous misconceptions and stories of injustice being experienced by so many blind/visually impaired people all over the world.

When a member in one of these online groups learned of Dave’s singing background, they invited him to perform at a meeting for those living with RP and Usher Syndrome. The experience inspired Steel’s idea for his “Stand By Me RP” song. Using the classic song by Ben E. King, Dave altered the lyrics to relate to how he felt losing his own sight to Retinitis Pigmentosa. In December 2014, Dave sought permission from the band Elbow, to alter the lyrics of their song “One Day Like This.” With the band’s blessing, Steele performed his version of the song at Joanne Milne’s “Breaking the Silence” book launch.

This is a question that I find myself asking a lot , especially when  I'm faced with a particular challenge in my life.

I find myself falling into patterns of procrastination, fear and confusion all of which keep me from being able to move forward.

The added challenge that sight loss brings can compound these feelings and I don’t know about you but just as I start to think and start to believe 'yes I can do that thing' or 'yes I can achieve that goal', I’m reminded of the limitations that my visual impairment can place on my ability to be successful.

Are you starting again or continuing the journey?

September is here and for many of us that means we are going back to or starting work again following some time off over the summer.

I don't know about you but I have mixed feelings about starting again and this is what I talk about in this week's episode.

Sometimes I feel excited to start again, I'm excited about what's ahead and the possibilities available to me, other times I can feel anxious and worried about what might happen.

So I'm deciding to look at this September as a continuation of my journey rather than starting again.

If I'm continuing the journey that means I get to bring everything that that I have been through, everything that I have learned and every mistake that I've made, build upon it all and hopefully become wiser, stronger and able to see more clearly the steps that I am supposed to be taking right now.

After you have received a  diagnosis of a visual impairment or any other type of disability, there is a 'gap' that forms between hearing that information and then figuring out how and in which direction you are going to move forward with your life.

In this episode, I'm highlighting the importance of 'minding the gap'.   How you choose to navigate this space, whether it's with pessimism or positivity, will determine how well you continue your journey.

In this episode, I had a conversation with Crossfit Coach, Steph Clish, in which we talked about the benefits of ensuring that we remain physically strong and healthy and how important it is that we choose courage over fear.

Steph is a product , people and fitness enthusiast. She is Head of Operations at software company, Wordnerds and is also a part-time Crossfit coach.

The Very Important Points from this episode:

  1. Understand that you can do what others can, maybe not in the same way, but you can.
  2. Everyone has different aspects of their physical fitness that they need help with, you might feel like you’re the only one, but you're not.
  3. Your strength will come from building community.
  4. Your mindset will shift with physical activity.
  5. You can move past the barriers that you face.
  6. Make the initial jump and do it again and again until it’s second nature
  7. The fears that we have are much worse in our head.
  8. Courage is not the absence of fear, courage is about feeling the fear and doing it anyway.
  9. You can do more than you thought you could do .
  10. You are not measuring yourself against anyone else - this about you and your personal growth.

In this week’s episode, I’m talking about ‘How your difference can be the difference'.

We should  take pride in the fact that there are differences between us - they’re what make us unique - and I don’t know about you - but I quite like knowing that there isn’t anyone else like me on the planet!

Having a disability, such as a visual impairment, is however, one of those differences that we could easily say that we would rather not have.

Disability, for many of us, can be a difference that, instead of making us feel proud about all that we are, can make us feel ‘less than’ and that we don’t measure up because of the limitations that our conditions place on our lives.

So how do we as individuals and a community work towards allowing our differences to be the difference that others need?

How do we as VIPs, learn to recognise the beauty that lies in something that appears on the outside to be broken?

I have often thought about Stargardts, the eye disease that has caused my sight loss, as the part of me that is broken - the part that can’t be used and is of no use to me or anyone else.

My eyes don’t function in the way that others do and this can’t be corrected by wearing glasses or contact lenses.

And at the moment, there is no cure.

Some ordinary tasks are more difficult and take a lot more time and planning than normal if I’m going to be able to do them well.

Are my eyes broken? I suppose that’s one way of putting it.

Then I start to think about what we tend to do with things that are broken or no longer of use to us - we find a way of clearing out and getting rid of those things.

But as VIPs we can’t get rid of our eyes, no matter how severe our level of sight loss is.

What we need to work on is how we can find the beauty, strength and possibility that lies in what appears to be broken.

In this week’s episode, I’m speaking to Jo’Nia Miller.

I’m sure that you will be inspired by her story and the wisdom that she has to share as much as I have been.

Jo’Nia is a shining example of all that She is a VIP stands for.

Here’s her bio.

Welcome to the world as seen through the eyes of Jo’Nia Miller! I discovered early on that drawing was my purpose and my gift. I use my creativity and imagination to bring my artwork to life. I am inspired to create pieces that depict the many facets of women. We are diverse, beautiful, unique, powerful, courageous, and passionate. Even as a visually impaired woman, I can see these truths about all women!

As a visually impaired woman I have never allowed my impairment to prevent me from creating art and impacting others through my work. Through my art I want to inspire others to never stop dreaming and to continually pursue their purpose regardless of life’s challenges.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to Charlie Kramer about all things vision and how important it is that we all, with or without sight loss, take the time and space to nurture and grow what’s on the inside of each and everyone of us so that we can all step up to and into who we have been created to be.

Before we get into the episode, here’s what you need to know about Charlie.

Legally blind from Retinitis Pigmentosa, Charlie Kramer unites, magnetizes and elevates those around him. A touring blind speaker and musical artist, Charlie has travelled across North America, Israel and Australia sharing his talent and message.

Recently featured in USA Today, Charlie is a Disability + Inclusion advocate and coach. He utilizes his blindness as a tool to educate people on the importance of inclusion, equality and radical self-acceptance.

As the Founder and Creative Director of the blindfolded singing and healing experience, Singing in the Dark, Charlie helps others to face their challenges and uncover the many blessings within their lives through music and meditation.

His newly released album “Blind” is a raw portrayal of his journey in accepting his disability and using it as a positive force for change.

The Zone of Nurture is about how we take care of ourselves and how we take care of the new mindset and practices that we are building so that we can thrive whilst living life as a visually impaired person.

The work that takes place through each of the different zones of vision can be intense and with this in mind, I know and I want you to know that it is so important that we learn how to take the time to nurture the new thing that is growing within us.

So my question for all of us today is how are we planning to make sure that the vision we are building grows strong because we are taking care of ourselves and sticking (as much as possible) to the new routines and practices we have begun to implement?

The ability to adjust and settle into a new way of doing things isn’t easy - especially if you have been so used to  things being a certain way and then it seems like all of a sudden, those things you thought you knew and were easily able to do, are no longer a reality for you.

How can we begin to adjust to the challenges that sight loss will bring, so that we can start to become all that we have been created to be?

This episode looks at three ways in which we can continue the journey towards realising our true status as VIPs.

Continuing to work through the building blocks of the vision centred process- the steps we can take to help us get clear about who we are and who we have been created to be.

This week is all about IMPLEMENTATION -how do we take what we are learning and actually make it work for us in the very specific way we need it to?

This episode is the third in the six-part series where I’m explaining each of the steps in the Vision centred process that I outlined in episode 4.

So this week we are focusing on the Zone of Strength.

Within this Zone of Vision, our attention is directed towards making sure that we are making a conscious effort to grow stronger in key areas of our lives.

Along my journey of developing a clear vision for my life, I too looked at the different areas of my life that needed a bit more of my attention.

I started to realise that the things I wanted to improve on were actually only symptoms that had come from me having ignored to a lesser or greater extent, my development and growth in three broad areas:

My physical, spiritual and emotional and mental health.

Coming to an understanding as to how these areas form the foundation for everything we want to do and achieve in our lives is so important. And yes, I’ll say it again, especially when you are living with a disability.

This week is the first in a six-part series where we look in more detail at each of the steps in the VISION centred process.

This episode is all about the Zone of Values - establishing or reminding ourselves  of what our  Core Values are, in other words, the principles or beliefs that each of us hold and are of central importance to how we live our lives.

If our vision is going to become clearer, getting clarity about what and who we value is a good place to start.

In this week's episode, I outline the V.I.S.I.O.N centred process that I use to help build and develop clearer vision.

There are six stages, or 'zones' involved in the process:

The Zone of VALUES

The Zone of IDENTITY

The Zone of STRENGTH

The Zone of IMPLEMENTATION

The Zone of ORIENTATION

The Zone of NURTURE

Is there a difference between Sight Loss and Vision Loss?

Sight and vision are interchangeable words  that are used to talk about how well we can physically see what we are doing and where we are going.

Depending on the type of sight loss, we have varying degrees of control over what happens.

But I have learnt over the years that what we do have is complete control over what happens to our vision.

When we feel like giving up, we need to remember the reasons why we have to keep going.

Sight loss can lead to a drastic change to the way we do life.  The feelings of worry and fear are a definite reality and will be present in our lives from time to time to a lesser or greater extent.

We have to find ways of managing what we are feeling so that we don't become overwhelmed.

There will be so many times when we feel like giving up but we need to find the people and practices that will help us stay on track.

We have not been placed on this earth to do the things that others are doing in the same way that they are doing them.

What are the dreams and goals that we will miss out on if we give up?

Who are the people that will miss out if we give up?

If we are going to live up to our true status as VIPs, then giving up is not an option.

Today I want to talk about why this podcast exists.

It has been born out of my own personal experience, both in my life as a woman living with a visual impairment but also from working with children, young people and their families who are also dealing with different types of visual impairment and trying to navigate life with the ups and downs that this brings.

I was diagnosed with Stargardt's disease at 14 and from that day of diagnosis I have been on a journey of trying to understand what this means for my life and building the confidence and resilience that will help me rise above this barrier and keep moving forward.

I have worked with so many people who are experiencing similar things, wondering if they will ever be able to achieve success and realise their dreams.

I want you to know that life can be lived fully even when you live with a physical limitation like this.

You may not have 20/20 vision but this does  not mean that you do not have a clear purpose to fulfil.
