Summary: In this episode of the No Loan Zone podcast, host, Janet Maltbie explores the legal missteps that parents often encounter when sending their kids off to college, and the importance of having the right legal documents in place. She is joined by guest Matt Hallett, an attorney specializing in family protection planning, trusts, probate, and wealth preservation.
Timestamps: "Even though their parent may be financially providing for them to go to college, the child has legal rights that may supersede the rights of their parent." — Matt Hallett [00:01:39 → 00:02:14]
"Unless your child elects with the university to give you access to their financial information at the school, through the school's bursar, you don't have access to it because that is their financial information - that's even if you are a co signer on a loan. You cannot communicate directly with the bursar because you are not the student and they're an adult. And that is their financial information. There are laws that protect them." — Matt Hallett [00:02:17 → 00:02:53]
"Generally speaking, most colleges will provide some type of mechanism to allow you to get that access, because the colleges do know that it's important that parents are involved." — Matt Hallett [00:03:01 → 00:03:28]
"Being able to participate, not control, but participate in their college experience is necessary. Therefore, it is not unwise to be able to connect financially your accounts with your child, because you may need, or they may need you to financially be able to connect to them." — Matt Hallett [00:05:53 → 00:07:14]
3 key takeaways:
1️⃣ Legal documents are crucial: Many college students may not realize the importance of allowing their parents access to their college information. However, there are legal documents, such as financial power of attorney, HIPAA authorizations, and healthcare power of attorney that grant parents the necessary authority to access and assist with financial and medical matters, ensuring peace of mind for both parties.
2️⃣ Communication and trust: It's crucial for parents and students to have open conversations and establish trust before college. Building this foundation can help avoid potential problems and navigate issues that may arise throughout the college experience. Parents who provide financial support often want to have access to certain information so that they can assist if an unfortunate event arises but students must work with the college to grant this permission.
3️⃣ Seek professional advice: Planning ahead and meeting with an attorney specializing in family law is highly recommended. They can guide parents and students in understanding their legal rights, addressing potential issues, and ensuring that the right legal documents are in place to protect everyone involved.

Today on the the No Loan Zone podcast, Janet Maltbie discusses the Supreme Court ruling on the student loan forgiveness program that will affect over 40 million borrowers. Regardless of the ruling, borrowers will need to start paying back their loans after a 3-year pause.
Highlights:* The Supreme Court will decide if President Biden's loan forgiveness program will move forward. * Under the President’s plan, eligible borrowers may be forgiven between $10-20,000, depending on income and Pell Grant eligibility. * The average student loan debt is $40,000, so borrowers will still have to pay back a significant amount even if most of their loan is forgiven * The Court is expected to rule on the matter by June, if they decide to rule on the merits of the case. * Borrowers need to prepare to start paying back their loans immediately if the court rules in the Biden Administration’s favor and the program is not blocked by the court.
Conclusion:* The No Loan Zone podcast is committed to helping students complete their degree debt-free. * Filling out the FAFSA is one way to start on a debt-free degree. Find it on www.studentaid.gov. * Choosing a career or college major that fits your interests, skills, personality, and values is essential to finding success at school, at work and in life.

Summary:Bob Born recently passed away, leaving behind a legacy of marshmallow Peeps. On the No Loan Zone podcast, Janet Maltbie breaks from her normal routine to pay tribute to Bob. She recounts his journey, from engineering physics to the Navy to the candy-making business. Janet encourages her students and others to not worry about the future and know that one's career will likely not stay the same throughout their lives.
Highlights:It can be difficult to decide what to do with your life, and it can be even more difficult to make sure you’re making the right decision. It’s important to explore career options wisely, and to ensure that you’re making a decision that will bring you joy and satisfaction. One person who did just that was was Bob Born. He’s the Peeps guy who passed away on January 29, 2023, at the age of 98 according to a recent Wall Street Journal article. This man brought joy to this world through a tiny, lovable product, the marshmallow peeps. May he rest in peace. This man brought joy to this world through a tiny, lovable product, the marshmallow peeps. May he rest in peace.
Bob had a fascinating life, beginning with an education in engineering physics and a stint in the Navy as a radar specialist. He was even planning to go to medical school, but instead found a love for tinkering with production machinery. In 1953 his family took over the Roddy Candy Company in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Then Bob that took over the company when his father passed away in 1959. It was there that he streamlined the company and produced, among other things, the famous Peeps product.
Bob’s story is an example of how exploring career options wisely can lead to success and satisfaction. He didn’t stick to one career path, instead meandered through several different jobs and careers before settling in on the candy-making business. His education and training had nothing to do with becoming a businessman, but it was still important and not a waste of time. He just applied it in the candy-making business.
This is why I tell the students in my career exploration class that they shouldn’t worry about deciding what they’ll do for the rest of their lives, because they won’t have the same job or career over time. It’s important to explore career options wisely, and to make sure that you’re making a decision that will bring you joy and satisfaction. It’s also important to remember that you don’t have to stick to one path.
In today’s labor market you will meander through several different jobs and careers. It is common for people to try new things, grow into new fields and experiment before settling in on something that brings them joy. Careers evolve and so do people.

Today on our program we discuss betting on college and how to make wise career choices based on our options, research and the facts before us. This podcast is based on the issues raised in the book, The Biggest Bluff by Maria Konnikova.
Research before betting on college.Betting on college is a huge decision that can have a lasting impact on a person’s financial future. It is important to do research and make wise choices before making this bet. By researching the facts and understanding the options, students and their families can make an informed decision about college.
Maria Konnikova, author of The Biggest Bluff, has done extensive research on how people bet. In her book, she ran betting experiments with students using real money. She found that people tend to overestimate the degree of control they have over events. Even smart people who should know better make decisions based on limited information. Unfortunately, many people make decisions based on their emotions rather than facts and research.
Konnikova’s main message is to pay attention and look at things as they are. Students must do their homework and research the college they are considering. They must look at the hard numbers and understand their own skills and abilities and their chances of success. It is important to look at the labor market realities and make an informed decision.

In this podcast Josh recounts his time at Mount Union. After scholarships and grants, Josh took out $100,000 in student loans and 8 years later is still paying $1,000 per month for his college.
Josh’s key takeaways:* “Paying off student loans is like paying alimony to a spouse you never married.” * “Have a good idea of what you want to do first, or take some time to explore that before you start spending the money on college.” * “If you are going to go to a four year college be super involved, because if you're not, then you're throwing away your money.” * “I started a business. I met my business partner there and made great memories. But at the same time, somebody else could spend $100,000 and just go through classes and just do what they're told and get absolutely nothing out of it.” * “So if you're gonna do it, it's still up to you to make it a great experience.” * “The onus is still on you to kind of take initiative and find what you love and do all the extra steps. $100,000 isn't going to do that for you.”

6:08 If you are going to an elite school like Case Western Reserve, you have to have some aspirations and know exactly what you are doing. Because if you come out of that school without a real clear idea what you want to do, it's just a hard game to catch up with in terms of debt.
6:53 The most valuable thing they (Case Western Reserve) gave to me (Gordon) was the relationships with the people that I knew my co founders, and my best technology coders are people that I met through the university.
7:31 At Boxcast, we have lots of employees that have degrees, we have lots of employees that don't have degrees. We have people in technology positions that don't have a four year degree, there are all kinds of interesting learning experiences that you can have that don't require having to have a degree.
8:10 Intangible skills do matter. It's not that skills don't matter. And you have to learn the coursework, whether that's in the classroom, online, or through a, you know, some sort of alternative program. But really, what matters most to companies are your work ethic, and how well you work with other people. And will you follow through on the deadlines? When you say you're going to do something? Can you do something? And can you stay organized?
9:35 Lots of living wage opportunities are available in technology. But is it right for you? There are many ways to get started in the field that don't necessarily involve going into debt. If you're unsure about your career direction and want more information about how to find a career that fits your personality, interests and skills. On Saturday, January 15, Daniel Henninger stated on the Wall Street Journal editorial report that enrollment in America’s colleges and universities is down 1 million students since the pandemic began.
Today over 43 million people owe more than $1.7 Trillion in student debt.
According to educationaldata.org the average public university student borrows $30,000 to obtain a bachelor’s degree.
Many are wondering if it is still worth it especially when so many classes are online and students miss out that “typical college” experience so many young people hoped for.
Today, Janet Maltbie, career expert and founder of the No Loan Zone podcast, interviews students from the campus of Lorain County Community College on the first day of the spring 2022 semester.
In the midst of this pandemic, what keeps them motivated?
Why do they press on? Do they think a college education is worth it?
Their answers might surprise you.

Today we continue our series on the Zero College Debt Dream. In our previous podcast we spoke with Neurologist Dr. Amanda Opaskar who talked about the 17 year old brain and how it is wired to make impetuous, spontaneous decisions without thinking about the long term consequence. Today we meet Reanna Urry and her family. Reanna is 18 years old and is about to make the most consequential financial decision of her life. She is planning to go to college but, where will she go and how will she pay for it? How much debt is she will to take on? Reanna’s decision will have a lot to do with what happened to her two sisters, Rebecca and Rachael.
For more information about the free College Credit Plus program through Lorain County Community College, go to: https://www.lorainccc.edu/ccp/ or contact Janet Maltbie at https://radiowannabe.com/contact.
Today we discuss with Neurologist Dr. Amanda Opaskar the adolescent brain and why it is so important for them to get help and guidance as they make the most important financial decisions in their life, namely, taking out student loans.
Is the average 17 year old really ready to make super consequential financial decisions on their own? Do they really know what they are getting into when they sign on the dotted line? What is the adolescent brain like anyway and how does it differ from an adult brain? For answers to questions we’ll talk with Dr. Amanda Opaskar.
Dr. Opaskar is a vascular and general neurologist at University Hospitals St. John Medical Center. The views expressed by Dr. Opaskar do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of university hospitals. The content is for informational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.
Today we begin our series on the Zero College Debt Dream and explore why over 43 million people owe more than $1.7 Trillion in student debt. Did you know the total cost of sending your 18 year old to a public college cost could go up to $100,000 before they graduate with a bachelor’s degree. This assumes, of course, families only have one child and they do not attend a private college or university. In that case, costs could quickly escalate to $300,000 or more, per child. For most families, sending their children to college represents expenses that far exceed the cost of a car, health care or their own home.
What can be done about this? Are there ways of cutting costs? Are there ways of preparing your teen to make wise career choices and complete a degree debt free?
Today on the No Loan Zone podcast we begin to seek answers to those questions in a series of podcasts called the Zero College Debt Dream. In it we will follow the Urry family’s quest to help their 18 year old daughter, Reanna, complete a degree, debt free.
