And the kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs has ignited a firestorm of criticism because he committed the audacious sin of commending his wife for being a great stay-at-home wife and mother. We live in a nonsense world.

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day and in a culture that can no longer even define the term “woman,” Mother’s Day is a bit of an anachronism. It’s a day that reminds us of some things that we intuitively know beyond a shadow of a doubt. But it’s a day that points out just how much nonsense has emerged in our culture. A couple of years ago when the Dobbs decision threw Roe vs. Wade back to the states, a lot of us thought that the abortion conversation would begin to decline and eventually become less significant as a part of the public discourse. In fact, the exact opposite has happened and abortion is once again, not only a topic of conversation, but it is a lynchpin for this year’s presidential campaign. Let’s talk about it.

I had a private conversation recently where I used the language, “tyrant” to refer to some decisions by our federal government. The person I was talking to said, “Pastor, that’s a little overkill. Isn’t that word a little strong for what we live with in our culture?” So I wondered if I am maybe using the wrong language. So I decided to try to define what a tyrant looks like. I think I’ve done it and I think we need to consider this biblically.

In almost any restaurant in America, Christians can pray or give thanks before their meal without any concern about retribution. They can do that because their religious liberty rights are protected by law. In fact, Christians often meet in public places to do a varierty of Christian activities. In those places, there’s no question about their activity. It’s normal to see followers of Christ doing Christian things in public places. And yet, any of those activities can get you killed in other parts of the world. We need to talk about the persecuted church.

In this election year, voters in two separate polls, have identified immigration as the top issue they want politicians to deal with. The most common question that I get for TruthCurrents comes from conservatives in general, but Christians in particular. They say, “How did we actually get here? How did we come to be in the place where we are today as a culture?”
The idea behind the question is, can you show me the rational process that lead us some of the nonsense that is now touted as normal and ordinary. Well, I want to share with you today what the Bible says about that and then I want to show you how that process has unfolded.

A recent survey by the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development surveyed citizens in the more developed nations around the world, what we call the “First World,” and their question was about their attitudes toward climate change, particularly global warming. The survey shows that 60% of those citizens believe that climate change will very likely lead to the end of mankind and it will probably happen in this generation.
Now that doesn’t surprise me because the results of those kinds of polls are often overblown because the whole conversation in the West about climate change is overblown. But how do we think about these issues biblically?

How should we expect persecution of Christians to begin in America? There won’t be stake burinings or beheadings, at least not in the beginning. The initial stage of persecution will almost certainly be the elimination of constitutional rights for citizens who happen to be Christian followed by the societal designation of Christians as cultural undesirables. Unfortunately, it’s already started.

In 1787 the deliberations of the constitutional convention were debating about what the new nation would look like. Would we have a king? Would there be some other system? Because the deliberations were in secret, anxious citizens gathered waiting to find out the results. And as the men exited the building we’re told about a Mrs. Powell who confronted Benjamin Franklin and said, “Dr. Franklin, what do we have: a republic or a monarchy?” And with no hesitation whatsoever Ben Franklin says, “A republic, if you can keep it.”
