Like water is the lifeline of human civilisation. Energy also is another lifeline which can make and break our entire ecosystem of this planet. It has a profound influence on our healthy lifestyle and inclusive growth. Industries and commercial establishments are bulk consumers followed by retail domestic consumers. If we look our energy consumption pattern in India, it is seen that we consume energy for Industry set up 44% whereas the global industry consumption is 50%. The second highest consumer of energy is transport sector that consumes 17% nationally and 20% globally. This transport sector consumes 40% petroleum energy. The third highest consumer is the residential and commercial setup which consumes 14% nationally and 30% globally and there are other energy users that consumes 10%. Most common form of primary energy sources are Oil, Coal & Gas and the global data point for those sources are Oil: 33%, Coal: 30% & gas: 24%.Energy reserves are measured in number of years to exhaust based on current consumption rate. Therefore our depleting Energy reserves identified for three primary energies. Coal we have : 113 years reserve (globally) & 100 years nationally. Whenever we are referring nationally it refers to India. Oil we have: 53 years reserve globally and 17.5 years nationally. Gas we have: 55 years reserve globally & 40 years (Nationally) Considering all these we must understand the need for energy conservation strategy to reduce our energy dependence. Otherwise we will hit apoint of no return. Please remember we have just one planet “the earth.”Therefore energy audit is a must have KPI for every energy consumers irrespective of size whether big or small. What is an energy audit. The moment we use the word audit it subtly popped the image of finance auditing methods where mistakes finding approach in the books of account are prime objective. Unlike finance auditing energy audit is a suggestive interaction and deliberation between users and team of energy experts to optimise the use of energy to bring down the rate of energy depletion on this earth.

Therefore, Energy audit is an investigation of all types facilities which consumes energy. Both historical & current consumption are thoroughly studied and strategies are formulated to optimise the consumption without affecting the business need. Though blaming each other is going on, let us still find out why these settlement cracks are becoming prominent.By the way, this podcast shall be treated as an academic work not to be correlated with any political mandate.How this Himalayan mountain was formed, let us visit history a bit.50 -60 million years ago 2 large plates came closer to the Tethys ocean. Indian continental plate moved towards the Eurasian continental plate. Because of this movement, the bed-level soil sediment crust between the plates formed the mountain Himalayas. This oceanic bed soil is very loose by its source as oceanic sediment.This Indian continental plate is still moving towards the Eurasian plate, and therefore, the Himalayan mountain is gradually becoming higher. During this movement, seismic tremors cause multiple earthquakes, which we all know.So primarily, it is a natural phenomenon that we can not escape. So what went wrong, and how went wrong?This underlying soil profile of Joshi math is extremely loose, and therefore its bearing capacity is very low, and the engineering behavior of this soil changes with %age of the water inside it.Since River alakananda flows heavily through Joshi math, it has many narrow & micro water channels seeping through the soil, and the change of the water level in the river, it affects the bearing capacity of the soil.You may experiment in your house with a handful amount of Wheat flowers over a newspaper sheet and shape it like a conical shaped mountain and then add a few drops of water and see the mountain made of wheat-flower will slowly lose its height. So failure primarily occurred due to excessive loading at the midpoint Secondly, unruly crowd-induced vibration amplifying the static dead load and live load on the pull enhanced the chances of collapse further Thirdly bridges are always designed with moving & rolling loads but not for static loads beyond capacity for a long time with huge induced sway. So all these cumulatively collapsed the bridge. Failure Details Failure 1 : The maintenance team neglected thorough maintenance due to a myopic vision of not achieving enhanced service life Failure 2 : Ticket issued more than its capacity and no plan to   schedule the visit in the group in a pre-decided time slot Failure 3 : SOP (by designer) is not documented and lucidly translated   down to the operating team (Pvt party) Failure 4 : Safety pep talk not happening before every shift beginning   to bring in more safety awareness for a century-old structure Failure 5 : Local govt body failed to adhere to procedural safety audit   before opening up the structure to the public Failure 6 : Old structures across India never go through any honest   audit process to declare safe or unsafe for public use Failure 7 : Indian institute of bridge engineers is not used by any govt   agency to avoid such incidents, no plans yet
