John Mueller, the Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst and Search Relations team lead at Google, recently said the total number of backlinks doesn’t matter. This is big news for a number of reasons since backlinks have been a cornerstone of Google search algorithm for many years. The quest for backlinks has always been an important part of SEO, but recently I personally have noticed its importance declining.

In this episode, we’ll get to the bottom of this and answer some fundamental questions whether you still need to go over backlinks or not and what a robust SEO strategy would look like in light of Google’s shift away from backlinks. Specifically, I will discuss the following:

  • The History and Importance of Backlinks for SEO
  • The Abuse of Backlinks
    • Panda Updates 2011
    • Penguin Updates 2012
  • Google's Current Position on Backlinks
  • What it means for your digital strategy

We focus on digital marketing on this podcast but many many small business owners face a host of issues running their business. As my old mentor once told me - increased sales solves all problems - that isn’t always the case. This is because a business can face operational hiccups, leadership conflicts, staff morale issues among others.

In this episode I talk with Shawn Richards, a business consultant with over 30 years of experience working with small businesses. In more recent years, Shawn has found tremendous passion in helping business leaders reclaim their entrepreneurial dreams!

We delve into the question of when do you know its time to hire a business consultant to help solve problems in your business so you gain the passion for the business you had when you started.

Shawn is also host of the Team Engagement podcast; a weekly “rapid-fire” podcast that discusses leadership and teams. With over 350 guests from all over the world Shawn is grateful to the many leaders who have contributed ideas, insights, and strategies. Shawn is a baseball fanatic and follows the Phillies regularly. He lives in Eagle Mountain with his wonderful wife and twin daughters.

In this three-part series, I will help clear the air and the seven fundamental digital marketing tactics.

This is the third and final episode in a three-part series. In this episode, I will go over the following:

Social - Social media marketing allows law firms to establish their brand personality and credibility by showcasing their attorneys, expertise, and successful case results to the public. Developing social media connections and nurturing leads can help drive word-of-mouth referrals for a law firm's services when people need trusted legal counsel for issues in their lives.

Paid Media - paid media campaigns allow law firms to get their adverts in front of people at the exact moment they search online for legal help, increasing findability dramatically for time-sensitive issues. Law firms that leverage paid media such as PPC effectively can rapidly generate more qualified website traffic, leads, and new clients seeking attorneys to take on their urgent cases or pending lawsuits.

In this three-part series, I will help clear the air and the seven fundamental digital marketing tactics.

SEO/ Content Marketing - SEO is critical for law firms to have their website seen by potential clients searching for local legal representation online after accidents and injuries. Optimizing a law firm's website and content for relevant keywords and search intent helps build credibility and trust in the firm by increasing findability, driving site traffic, and ultimately gaining qualified leads and new clients needing legal help.

Email Newsletter - Email marketing helps law firms stay top-of-mind with existing clients by providing helpful legal content, law updates, and newsletters directly in their inboxes on an ongoing basis. By actively building an email list, law firms can also reach new potential clients with tailored offers and free consultations to acquire more business.

  • Not Overlooking Mobile Optimization
  • Evaluating and Assessing Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Revisiting Content Marketing (or, getting started)
  • Assessing Your Performance Against Your Strategic Plan (or, putting one together)

The goal is to take a pause and regroup so the second half is better than the first half.

In this episode, I go over the reasons why Google has an attraction to websites built on WordPress. Specifically, we will discuss:

  • What should you do if you don’t use WordPress?

While WordPress is indeed a popular choice for SEO, it's important to note that SEO success ultimately depends on a combination of factors, including quality content, relevant keywords, inbound links, site speed, and overall user experience.

Recently “..in an attempt to distance from the deepening backlash, Anheuser-Busch has reportedly told U.S. beer distributors that it cut ties with the "third-party ad agency" responsible for the Mulvaney collaboration….The brewing giant reportedly sent a letter to hesitant distributors saying it has fired the marketing firm responsible…”

This brings up an important question on how companies and brands can effectively manage their advertising and marketing agencies. We’re not suggesting they could have avoided the controversy by following these seven steps. However, we are saying that there must’ve been some breakdown in their management because these seven rules are very effective when it comes to managing your advertising and marketing agency.

  1. Clearly Define Goals and Expectations
  2. Effective Communication
  3. Collaborative Planning and Strategy
  4. Request and Review Reports
  5. Provide Access to Resources
  6. Foster a Culture of Collaboration
  7. Evaluate Performance and Results

Remember, managing your digital marketing agency is a two-way relationship. By actively participating, communicating effectively, and collaborating, you can ensure you get the most out of the partnership and drive the desired outcomes for your business.

Email marketing can provide a significant return on investment (ROI) for businesses. For every dollar spent on email marketing, the average ROI is $36 or a 3,500% return. Despite email marketing's bad reputation for being spammy, poorly designed, or irrelevant, it remains a powerful marketing tool when executed correctly. Email marketing works because it has a wide reach, offers targeted messaging, is cost-effective, measurable, enables personalization, and can be automated.

There are five types of email marketing campaigns: promotional, newsletter, re-engagement, new leads, and nurturing campaigns. Big brands have used email marketing to great effect. Nike's personalized email campaign promoting its customizable sneakers led to a 31% increase in conversions. Amazon's "Recommended for You" campaign led to a 29% increase in sales, while Uber's "Thank You" campaign led to a 10% increase in customer loyalty. Spotify's "Year in Review" campaign led to a 30% increase in user engagement, and Grammarly's educational email campaign led to a 400% increase in sign-ups.

Small businesses can take advantage of email marketing by building a targeted email list, creating compelling content, segmenting their audience, personalizing messages, and automating campaigns. Small businesses should also track and analyze their email marketing metrics to improve their campaigns' effectiveness. Overall, email marketing can be a highly effective way for small businesses to build relationships with their customers and prospects, reach a wide audience, and drive sales.

There are a lot of different website builders available in the marketplace. There are Saas platforms that allow you to log in - choose a template - modify and publish. There are more advanced platforms that require you to download software and install it on your server before you can build. There are pros and cons to both types of systems. Which one you choose will depend on the stage of your business, what your website needs to look like, and also how much SEO you want to do on your site and if that is an important consideration for your business growth.

In the episode, I’ll give you an overview of website builders and then also give you my take on which builder you should go with and the reasons why.

One of the places where you can go to see leading indicators for your business is Google Analytics - looking at your website visits (new visitors, time on site, engagement levels) you can get an idea of how your future customers are interacting with your business TODAY. If your visitor flow is increasing - that is a good indicator that you’re getting more attention and hence if you do things well - you should have more business in the future. If the time on site for your website is increasing then that could be a sign that you’re attracting the right people and your future customers are actively evaluating your product and service.

So, there are many reasons why you need to be going through your Google analytics on a regular basis. And if you’re not doing that already, let me give you an insight into why you might want to start doing that. In this episode, I discuss why you need to be regularly logging in and looking at the data in your Google Analytics account.
