Memory is one of the most important faculties. Not only does it allow us to relive the good times, but it also affects our mood and how we act and behave. Factors like stress, certain medications, illnesses, or the amount and quality of sleep can impact memory in the short term. With age, memory can decline as the risk of issues like dementia increases. Fortunately, losing your memory as you age is not a foregone conclusion. With a few lifestyle adjustments, it is possible to remain sharp into old age.

Today, I share some lifestyle changes you can adopt to help protect both your memory and overall health, using my 93-year-old patient Mary as a real-life success story. I explain what the MIND diet is and why it helps to slow cognitive decline. I discuss the roles that sleep and stress play in maintaining a good memory. I recommend some fun ways to keep your brain health that will keep your social calendar full and make your next vacation easier. I also remind you that if you are experiencing any changes in your memory, you need to see your doctor.

“Dementia is not just about memory loss. It can impact the way you think, feel, act, and behave—and it’s certainly not a natural part of the aging process.”

How can you strengthen and support your immune system? When it’s working well, we take our immune systems for granted. Professor Luke O’Neill is one of the most influential international names in science who came to prominence through Covid-19. As one of the top 1% of immunologists in the world, he has studied the toll of inflammatory disease on the human body. He was a reassuring voice of reason, explaining the science behind the pandemic and helping the public navigate a trying and terrifying time. In 2008 Professor O’Neill was seated as the Chair of Biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin and appointed Chair of the Immunity and Infection panel of the European Research Council. Since then, he has published nearly 400 scientific papers as well as best-selling books, including Keep Calm and Trust the Science, Humanology, and Never Mind the B#llcks, Here’s the Science.*

Today, Luke joins me to discuss his work around immunity and how high-stress levels have catastrophic effects on your immune system, leaving you vulnerable to illness. We look back at the Covid-19 pandemic and the pathogen Luke thought may be responsible for the next pandemic. He shares his experience with depression, some of the tactics he used to feel joy again, and his mission to normalise mental health issues. We discuss how research has confirmed the benefits of ancient wellness practices like herbal medicine and meditation and how you can incorporate them into your wellness routine. In this episode, I discuss the value of choosing a strength-based approach to living our lives. I discuss how traditional psychological practices shifted from focusing on alleviating problems and weaknesses to embracing positive psychology practices. I discuss the six core characteristics that are present in every culture, civilization, and religious belief and how they sub-divide into what we now consider 24 different character strengths. I explain what signature strengths are and how our strengths can change over time. I also discuss the benefits of choosing a strength-based approach to living, how to identify and leverage the benefits of your signature strengths, and how using your strengths can support your vitality and well-being.

Do you tend to focus on your weaknesses instead of your strengths? Do you tend to focus on what’s wrong instead of what’s strong? As humans, our brain is hard-wired for fear detection, anxiety, and discomfort, which often leads us to focus on our faults and flaws instinctually. And while it might seem counterintuitive to focus on our strengths instead of our weaknesses, it can also be a tremendous way to feel better and bring more of the ‘real you’ into the world.

“It’s only by choosing your strengths that you will sail the ocean of possibility in life.”
– Dr. Mark Rowe

I like the phrase “best year.” It is full of optimism, positivity, and the feeling that things can improve. I believe that our lives can be changed and improved through the power of our own effort; it’s about what we commit and recommit to every single day. So, in the spirit of recommitment and never stopping starting, I turned the phrase B.E.S.T. Y.E.A.R. into a mnemonic for a set of strategies that could help you make 2023 your best year yet.

In this episode, I outline the B.E.S.T. Y.E.A.R. mnemonic and explore ideas for living with more vitality in the new year. I discuss how accepting the totality of the human experience and practicing habits of kindness and gratitude can help us flourish. I describe how forging deeper connections and investing in the people around you can benefit your quality of life. I also highlight the importance of recommitting to live with more vitality every day and underscore the value of remembering to never stop starting.

“Every day is a learning day, an opportunity to recommit to live with more vitality, to never stop starting, and never stop growing.”

The power of words and the emotions they evoke are well-discussed throughout history. For example, the Rig Veda considered the world’s oldest spiritual text, asserts that all sounds have vibrational energy that, when heard, triggers emotional experiences that make one respond in a certain way. Mahatma Gandhi noted the influence of thoughts over words, and words’ influence over destiny. At the same time, more contemporary thinkers such as Nicholas Christakis suggest how words can ripple through a network of people.

In this episode, I discuss how your words can impact you and the people around you. I describe the contagiousness of positive and negative emotions and the presence of energy in words. I explain how toxic positivity sets you up for more feelings of distress, discomfort, and disease. I also discuss how the practice of being more mindful and present enables you to let go of the past and anxiety of the future and share wisdom from the brilliant minds of Maya Angelou, Confucius, St. Francis of Assisi, and others.

Welcome back to Part 2 of my conversation with Bernie Keogh on her Podcast YayCanDo. YayCanDo is a podcast about possibility, embracing our humanity and letting go of limiting beliefs in our lives. Today we discuss the science behind adopting a gratitude practice, why there isn’t a ‘one-size-fits all’ approach and why it’s important for each individual to find their own recipe for inner contentment. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!”

Bernie Keogh is the co-founder and co-host of the YayCanDo Podcast. She is also the Managing Director of A Lust For Life, a multi-award-winning charity on a mission to empower future generations to be effective guardians of their mental health and well-being. With over two decades of business experience, Bernie is committed to empowering others to believe in their potential, become leaders of their own lives, and build exciting sustainable careers.

As we talk about the science behind adopting a gratitude practice, we discuss the difference between objective and subjective evidence and why they’re both important. We discuss the benefits of adopting a gratitude practice, why there isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to developing a gratitude practice, and why it’s important for each individual to find their own recipe for inner contentment. We share our own daily gratitude practices and how they got us through some of the most challenging times in our lives. We also discuss the difference between taking life’s challenges in stride and what true resilience is, and why taking care of ourselves first is critical to better care for others.

“Resilience is being able to meet life’s challenges and process them, ideally, in a healthy way.
That means meeting the pain of them, accepting that, and still finding the will to go on.”

Undoubtedly, one of the keys to a life of meaning and rich fulfillment is to have a clear sense of purpose and a strong sense of who you are. But what’s the difference between the people struggling with toxic stress and feelings of anxiety and those living a rich life filled with purpose and a clear sense of vitality?

In my experience: flow.

So what does it mean to live your life ‘in flow’? How do you create more flow in your life? And how is it the key to unlocking your inner happiness, well-being, and deep fulfillment?

In this episode, I discuss the lessons we can learn about the concept of flow from the Russian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. I discuss what ‘being in flow’ truly means and how it impacts your emotional health, well-being, and feelings of joy and fulfillment. I discuss how Mihaly explored the concept of flow by studying artists’ work habits and practices and how we can create more flow in our lives by doing more of the things we enjoy. I share how being in a state of flow impacts your creativity, playfulness, and authenticity. I also share tips on how you can begin finding new ways to create more flow so you can live a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life.

“The essence of flow is being in the moment, the present moment, where action and awareness are merged.” – Dr. Mark Rowe

Many people suffer from toxic stress. With so many external stressors in our lives, it’s critical that we find a way to balance our positive and negative thoughts by practicing mindful self-compassion. Compassion generally consists of three key components: awareness, action, and a sense of all-togetherness. So why does it seem easy to feel compassion and empathy for others but much more difficult to be compassionate toward ourselves?

Today, I discuss the importance of living our lives through the lens of mindful self-compassion. I explain how compassion for others is similar to being compassionate to ourselves and how being aware of your thoughts and feelings is the first step toward improving your self-compassion skills. I explain how challenges, failures, and suffering are an inevitable part of being human and how accepting this inevitability puts us on a path toward growth. I discuss the difference between Western and Eastern Philosophy regarding challenges and obstacles. I also explain how being mindful and compassionate with yourself can impact your health and well-being and share tips to help you boost your self-compassion skills.

“Self-compassion is all about being an encourager.”
– Dr. Mark Rowe
