Your (not so) Anonymous Journal: Recent Episodes

Sarah Laux

When we think of health and wellness we often think of eating right, staying active and practicing positive habits that will help us grow into the people we want to be. But something that is so often missed within the conversation of health, wellness and healing is actually talking about the hard stuff and getting support for the shit that keeps us up at night. Everyone's life is one big anonymous journal where pieces of ourselves stay hidden because of the mental health stigma. This podcast is dedicated to opening up those journals and letting people have a safe place to tell their stories.

To be completely transparent I have zero remembrance of what I rambled about in this episode. What I do know is that I finally spill the beans on becoming honest about my wants and desires in life, especially in my career. And what that means for website design. Listen up because (I believe) it gets a lil' spicy!

Over the past few years I've gotten really good at identifying my triggers: Feeling anxious in relationships, Financials, Imposter Syndrome and being in a sensory over-loaded environment. I decided to write out four questions I can come back to when I start to feel myself going into fight or flight mode with my goal being to ground myself.

I wanted to share these questions in hope they inspire you to write your own to come back to when you start feeling anxious, frustrated, angry, depressed, etc. Or if you want, take mine!

I believe therapy is a gift everybody can give themselves. We all deal with a level of childhood trauma that ultimately affects how we presently think, feel and handle emotions during specific situations and triggers. When I started going to therapy two years ago I was struggling with anxiety daily/every other day, severe mood swings and disassociation that would take me out for the day. Because of talk therapy, I can confidently intellectualize my triggers, thoughts and choices which feels super empowering. The only problem? My inability to feel deep emotion which talk therapy wasn't able to help me with, which I explain more in the episode. So sit back, relax and join me as I go into detail about the next steps in my mental health journey..

If you have any questions on my experience or why I've decided to stop therapy, feel free to shoot me a message on instagram here!

On today's episode we have good friend and Social Media Manager, Emily Rutherford, on the podcast. Emily opens up about her journey with therapy, including how her first experience was when she was 12 years old. She deep dives into her struggles with people pleasing and guilt, holding onto anger, but most importantly, how to forgive herself throughout the process. Therapy is different for everybody but the surface level feelings and experiences we share when it comes to finding the right therapist and actually opening up and going deep about our struggles can be similar. So wherever you are when listening to this episode, I hope you enjoy it and find something that resonates.

Back in college, I thought nobody cared about my traumatic experience. I never gave anyone a chance to show they do care, and of the people I did tell my story to, lashed out, gaslit me and walked out of my life. The unfortunate truth is that so many people who struggle with mental health have had memories with someone who's treated them like shit for struggling. It makes you never want to open up or tell your story again, and overtime that builds up in a bad way.

Over the last couple months I've opened up to at least 4-5 more people in my life who have showed me that they do care about my story, and me. It took me years to realize that there are people who can be a safe space for you. So join me in this episode as I share my FOUR tips on how to become more open and owning your story and who you are as a person, regardless of what reactions you get from others.

Join Alaina and I in today's episode where we deep dive into all things emotional intelligence, self awareness and stored trauma. And if ya didn't know, when you suppress trauma and negative experiences, over time that can show up in your life as both physical and emotional symptoms. A few months ago I had the pleasure of working with Alaina on some of my own stored trauma that I've had a tough time healing which, naturally, manifested into issues with my gut health, heavy sugar and sweet cravings, frequent anxiety + depressive episodes, intrusive thoughts, a lot of pent up anger and so on. Together we were able to work through things I've never verbalized to anyone in order to release emotions that I never let come up.

If you are someone who has tried to work on your own physical and/or emotional symptoms yet nothing seems to be helping...please give this episode a listen!

In light of turning 26 this past week, a friend of mine suggested doing a solo episode on 26 lessons I've learned over the last 3 years of my healing journey. It's always crazy when you look back at who you were a couple years ago and see how far along you've come in terms of your personal growth and development. A few things I talk about in this episode are feeling like my past choices/past situations used to define who I am as a person, constantly feeling jealous of everyone else's blessings and disregarding my own, expressing how much self awareness and emotional intelligence has helped me live a more intentional life, and a TON more.

No matter how old you are, experiencing something traumatic changes you as a person. It changes your nervous system, the choices you make, the thoughts you have and really everything around you. My sophomore year of college, I experienced something traumatic that ultimately ended up with me taking the dark way out to cope. Telling my friends and family that I’m totally fine, getting involved in a toxic relationship along with frequent drinking and hard drug use. It took me a year and a half to finally ask for help and seek a therapist. Although I had a horrible experience, it helped me find hope for the first time in a long time.

Join me in this episode as I break down the last 6 years of my mental health journey and the choices I made to find peace with my mental health again.

The other day I was scrolling on Instagram and found a carousel post titled "reminders you need to hear right now." So naturally I texted a good handful of my friends to send me a reminder they think people need to hear so I could turn it into an episode. I love reminders because they can act as that one 'thing' that someone needs to hear in order to pull themselves out of a dark place. Reminders are there to remind your brain that you are in control, on your own timeline, doing what YOU are supposed to be doing right now. And most importantly, they remind you that you are not alone and everybody goes through the ups and downs of life. So without further ado, please enjoy this episode because my friends had some damn good things to say.

What comes to mind when you look back at the younger versions of yourself? Maybe you wish you did things differently. Some people wish they made better choices, had bigger ambitions or simply thought about future you just a little bit more. But when you're able to gain the self awareness as to WHY you made certain choices or handled situations a certain way, it can lift some of those shameful feelings off of your shoulders. Join Audrey and I as we break down our own  college experiences and the coping mechanisms we picked up to deal with some of the bullshit life threw our way.

We should know by now that whatever we see on social media is only a small glimpse of what's actually going on in someone's life. And for me? It might seem like I'm successfully running my own business, starting new hobbies such as this podcast, going to the gym daily and keeping up with a fun social life. But the truth is? Basically, life is overwhelming AF for anyone trying to work on their career, relationships, financials, health, etc. So if you've been feeling like life is kicking your ass, listen to this episode because I guarantee you we're in the same boat

Stress and Anxiety is inevitable. We have so much to juggle around in this life with relationships, career, financials, personal life decisions. The problem? Letting the stress and anxiety build up and start to dictate the choices we make and the way we decide to live our life. It can become debilitating when all of a sudden we notice ourselves becoming frustrated with ourselves and others, feeling like the world is against us and as if your situation can't get better. Life can be hard, but what's even harder is refusing to get the help and support to become a happier human being in this live. Join me in a SUPER valuable and insightful conversation with Stress and Anxiety Coach Liz Leonard on understanding how stress and anxiety can start to build up and what you can do to get a grip on it. Liz is also offering 50% off the first month working with her by using the code "Mind50" when inquiring about her services.

Just because everyone else is setting big goals in 2023 doesn't mean you have to. I don't know about you, but hearing about people's new years resolutions overwhelms the hell out of me. Like, why can't we just go with the flow? The thought of adding new goals to 2023 on top off the one's I've yet to achieve is absolutely sending me. So I thought of something I could do a little differently this year: strive to break negative habits that held me back last year. Habits such as people pleasing, letting up on my boundaries, thinking too much into the future, etc. Because these habits that I've picked up along my way of life are some of the reasons why achieving my goals can be really hard. So why not try to kick em out of my life sooner than later?

If you're someone like me who would way rather take some negative things off your plate rather than add to it...join me in this episode :)

Dear listeners/friends,

Just because you go to therapy doesn't mean you're broken. Just because you go to therapy doesn't mean you're "weak" or that "somethings wrong with you." I thought I was something that needed to be fixed and that being emotionally vulnerable meant I was weak and couldn't handle my shit. The perspective changes I've had on therapy are something I feel needs to be shared. Because I hated therapy. I hated my first two therapists. I hated thinking I had problems or issues. But now I love therapy. I found someone I truly enjoy talking to each week and I can confidently say there's nothing wrong with me, but that therapy helps me grow into a better version of myself.

If therapy is something you've been pondering for a while or you've had a bad first experience like me, give this episode a listen and realize you're not alone and that it CAN get better.

Sarah

Dear friends,

When we think of health and wellness we often think of eating right, staying active and practicing positive habits that will help us grow into the people we want to be. But something that is so often missed within the conversation of health, wellness and healing is actually talking about the hard stuff and getting support for the shit that keeps us up at night. And let's be real, everyone's life is one big anonymous journal where pieces of ourselves stay hidden because of the huge stigma placed around mental health and mental struggles. People shouldn't have to fear the idea of going to therapy, being emotionally vulnerable or asking for help, which is exactly how I felt almost 6 years ago. But after working through my own experiences of trauma and the shit life throws at us, it's now my goal to hold that space for you, in hopes to give someone the courage to reach out and get support. So get comfy, grab your favorite beverage and let's open up this anonymous journal.

Sincerely,

Sarah
