तोक्यो विश्वविद्यालय के विदेशी भाषा अध्ययन विभाग में आयोजित सम्मेलन तथा ओसाका विश्वविद्यालय के 2010 के अंतरराष्ट्रीय हिंदी सम्मेलन में भाग लेने छह सदस्यों का हमारा छोटा - सा प्रतिनिधिमंडल 24 अक्तूबर , 2010 को इदिरा गाधी अंतरराष्ट्रीय विमानस्थल तीन पर पहुँचा । यह विमानस्थल विश्व का सबसे विशाल हवाई पड़ाव कहलाता है । कुछ देर हम इसका महाकाय वैभव देखते रहे , क्योंकि एयर इंडिया की उड़ान तीस मिनट विलंब से चली । अधिकांश सीटें खाली थीं , हम आराम से आए । नरीता एयरपोर्ट बड़ा लंबा था , लेकिन फिसल - पट्टियों से थकान नहीं हुई । कस्टम्स में हमारी उँगलियों की छाप ली गई । पासपोर्ट कई बार जाँचा गया । एयरपोर्ट के बाहर तोकयो विश्वविद्यालय के प्रतिनिधि बड़ी - सी वैन लेकर आए हुए थे । 100 किलोमीटर से ज्यादा सफर कर हम तोक्यो पहुँचे । निशिकासाइ , एडोकावा कू में स्थित सनपेटियो होटल में हमारा ठहराव रहा । यहाँ बाहर की ठंड को धता बताते हुए अंदर का तापमान इतना गर्म था कि कमरे की खिड़की खोलनी पड़ी । हम सातवीं मंजिल पर हैं । सामने ' जीन जंक्शन स्टोर ' में सेल लगा हुआ है । नीचे सड़क पर यदा - कदा तेज रफ़्तार से साइकिल चलाती कोई जापानी बाला दिख जाती है । कई युवतियों ने साइकिल के आगे टोकरी में अपने गोल - मटोल बच्चे बैठा रखे हैं । हरेक दुकान के नामपट पर जापानी के साथ चीनी और अंग्रेजी भी लिखी हुई है । लोग जिस ढंग से चल और बोल रहे हैं , लगता है वे स्वचालित तकनीकी के हिस्से हैं । सड़क और होटल दोनों एकदम प्रदूषणरहित हैं , बाजार का कोई शोर सुनाई नहीं देता ।
