Adam Rossen sits down with Carlos J. Martinez, the elected Miami-Dade Public Defender (11th Judicial Circuit), to unpack an extraordinary journey—from immigrating to Miami without speaking English to leading one of the nation’s largest criminal defense offices. This episode is rich with purpose-driven leadership, community impact, and practical wisdom.
Growing up in Miami in the early 1970s, Carlos learned resilience the hard way—overcoming language barriers, bias, and limited means. A tough ESOL teacher removed the safety net on day one, forcing fluency and fueling confidence; soon he and his classmates swept the school spelling bee. Throughout the episode, Carlos shares how education, work ethic, and service shaped his calling in public defense. You’ll hear the powerful lesson his parents carried from Cuba: they lost property and liberty, but no one could take their education.
Carlos also opens up about blue-collar beginnings—cleaning churches with his father, managing Exxon stations as a teen, and taking the long route through Miami-Dade College, FIU, and law school. His story is a masterclass in people-first leadership, community service, and finding mission in your career. For anyone considering public interest work—or simply trying to lead with empathy—will find this episode both practical and inspiring.

Adam Rossen sits down with Odelia Goldberg, a Fort Lauderdale estate planning attorney whose career spans modeling, 18 years at IBM, and building a thriving law practice. This episode explores how emotional intelligence, disciplined systems, and fearless self-investment drive lasting success in business and life.
Odelia shares why she calls herself “a lover, not a fighter,” focusing on non-confrontational law, estate planning, uncontested probate, real estate transactions, and contracts. She explains how emotional intelligence helps lawyers navigate sensitive topics like death without overwhelming clients. Odelia also unpacks her unlikely path: from pageants and modeling to IBM project management, earning an MBA and law degree at night, then acquiring multiple firms from retiring attorneys, developing a repeatable, people-first model.
Tune in as we dive into her Fort Lauderdale law firm growth, why her favorite investment is herself, and how automations (like Salesforce-powered intake) and ownership of her office building created stability and scale. Odelia also recounts a bold run for New York State Senate and the lesson to “stay a six or seven” emotionally, never riding the highs too high or the lows too low. Today we are excited to be joined by Jonathan Rosa, founder of Moura CFO, a fractional CFO company. Originally from Boston, Jonathan has been in Miami since 2015 and considers it home. For the past four years, he has been helping small businesses better understand their business and finances, improve profits and gain control of their cash flow.
Jonathan shares his story as the child of Brazilian immigrants, growing up in the restaurant industry in Boston, and attending Boston College for finance. We’ll learn about his career journey, including his corporate experiences at Panera Bread and Burger King, and what inspired him to start his own business.
Listen in as Jonathan talks about taking the leap of faith to start his own company, navigating the challenges of the pandemic as a new business owner, work-life balance and more!
Here’s some of what we discuss in this episode:
Learn more about Jonathan:I'm Jonathan, the Founder, and CEO at Moura CFO: https://www.mouracfo.com/.
I'm based in Miami. My father has been in the restaurant industry since before I was born, marking over 30 years. He's been a restaurant owner for around 25 of those years. Growing up with my father's influence in the restaurant business, I pursued a finance degree in college and later joined the parent company of BURGER KING, where I spent 4 years in Corporate Finance, focusing on budgeting, forecasting, and monthly reporting for the global brands BURGER KING and TIM HORTONS.
I made the transition to a Fractional CFO in 2019. After 4 years in corporate finance and the birth of my first son, I realized my unrealized dream of being a business owner and the aspiration to influence the family business. Despite my father never receiving formal business or management training, I wanted to merge the finance knowledge I had acquired with the operational expertise and passion that people like my father have. My purpose is to assist entrepreneurs in gaining a clear vision of their businesses, providing financial management services that help them make strategic decisions. I believe that by understanding the numbers and having a broad view of their ventures, they will be better prepared to face challenges and grow sustainably. In this way, I contribute to the success of Brazilian entrepreneurs in the United States, strengthening their ties to the community and positively impacting their families, both in the present and in the future.
