In The Gospel of Mark 8:31-38, Jesus instructs his disciples to understand that sacrificing their lives for Him and the gospel will, in fact, save it. Mother Rita shared Pauli Murray's inspiring story for our sermon series, "Igniting Your Spirit to Find Heaven on Earth." Pauli Murray was a civil rights activist, author, and Episcopal priest.

The Epiphany reminds us that the Holy Family were refugees fleeing a hostile ruler. On January 4, we hosted a conversation with Lauren Weinhold, the Chief External Affairs Officer of Jewish Vocational Services, about their work assisting refugees.
Bringing Jesus to Life – for the celebration of the Epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Rt. Rev. Diane Jardine Bruce, Bishop Provisional of West Missouri, joined us to celebrate, preach, and welcome so many into the Episcopal Church through baptisms, confirmations, and receptions. For over 25 years, a collective of dedicated parishioners from several churches have come together to provide warm winter clothing and a catered meal to Kansas Citians facing the challenges of winter without resources. This year, our Free store event will be during MLK weekend on Saturday, January 13th, at St. James Church at 5540 Wayne Avenue in Kansas City. Nourish KC, an organization focused on food access and security in Kansas City, will provide a delicious lunch. For this episode, our guests are Dr. Yvette Richards and Nyrobi Collins, representing St. James Church, and Janet Kelley and Melissa Rock, representing St. Andrew’s.

Charles Weed, to "the little brown church," as our congregation was called when it's first worship space was built on the corner of Wornall Terrace and Meyer Boulevard, to the rapid growth of St. Andrew's as a parish in the second half of the twentieth century.

During the first session of learning about the conflict in the Holy Lands, we had Dr. Vin Clark as our speaker. He presented the intricate and contentious history between the Israelis and Palestinians. Dr. Clark is a retired professor of history and department chair at Johnson County Community College. The session focused on the roots and complexities of this enduring struggle. In the next session, we will discuss the role of Christian ethics during times of geopolitical conflict.

In the liturgical calendar, All Saints and All Souls Days are two significant observances celebrated in various Christian denominations, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church and Anglican Communion. These feasts are focused on honoring and remembering the deceased, but they hold distinct theological significance. "I'm Dead! Now What?" is a conversation led by Fr. John that delves deep into why we observe these two feasts and the practical implications of their celebration. Through this discussion, you will gain a better understanding of the importance of these feasts in the Christian faith.

For the Twentieth Week of Pentecost, Fr. John examines Christian ethics regarding war at this time in our world, where Israel and Hamas are now in active combat. He reminds us that Jesus is central to our ethics and that we are to love God and our neighbor. It’s the story of God in the world. A narrative for which we can pattern our lives, especially when we are asked to show up and support our neighbors who ask for help.

This summer, we're highlighting several parishioners who strive to live out this conviction of going deeper in their relationship with God and sharing that relationship with the broader community. Nourish KC's Food Rescue Program provides healthy, nutritious food to The Kansas City Community Kitchen and neighborhood pantries throughout the greater Kansas City area for distribution to under-resourced families. The program has rescued over 360,000 pounds of perfectly fresh, useable food from being wasted last year alone. Nourish KC also leverages its kitchen facilities to host the Culinary Training Program, which focuses on helping older foster youth gain valuable life and job skills to prepare them for aging out-of-state care. Sarah Tepikian has been active in the nonprofit sector, serving with AmeriCorps, where she gained experience at the Ewing Marion Kauffman School, Thelma's Kitchen, and as a Regional Admissions Manager for City Year Headquarters. Since 2018, Sarah has served at St. Andrew's in several roles, starting as an evening office attendant, and working in the nursery. She was an Operations Coordinator, and Engagement Coordinator. Currently, Sarah is serving as our brand-new Outreach Coordinator.
