CityTalk NOVA is a podcast from CityView church in Northern Virginia. CityView is a church family that God is building to make disciples of Jesus Christ in the heart of Loudoun County and around the world.
This podcast features sermons recorded in our Sunday services and occasional conversations on topics of Christ, Community, and Commission.
Receiving Christ is an individual decision and at the same time you’re placed into God’s family the Church. You become part of a community that God has placed you in for their benefit and yours. Each of us brings unique gifting, personality, and experiences that are intended for the good of the community. This is what fellowship is all about. Fellowship is much more than eating potluck dinners at a church! It’s about sharing life, enjoying, and learning from one another. The glue that holds fellowship together is love. And love is much more than a mushy sentiment because that’ll never hold us together when we disagree or clash.

This Sunday we’re seeing how an unexpected encounter between King David and one of his citizens teaches us an important point about worship. The word “worship” in the English language comes from the olde Anglo-Saxon for “worth-ship”. To worship means to declare the worth of the object we are worshiping. Worship is more than a song, more than a ceremony, and its more than words. True worship means living my life in a way that shows I believe Jesus is worthy of the highest honor. The journey of faith has ups and downs as well as dangers and delights. As we follow Christ in everyday life, we have an enemy who’s doing everything he can to trip us up. We also live in a fallen world with traps and snares along the way to stop us or throw us off track. This week we’re eavesdroping on a conversation between two rich men that exposes the most formidable obstacle to living by faith. But their conversation doesn’t leave us hopeless, it also shows the way forward.

The Bible tells us that, those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. (Ps 9:10, NIV) God ‘s name and his titles reveal what he’s like. When you know God well, you’ll trust him for great things, your prayers will be bolder, and you’ll want to introduce him to as many people as you can. Many of us have seen detailed charts of end-times prophecies and you may have some thoughts for decoding the apocalyptic imagery used in Daniel, Ezekiel, and Revelation. Unfortunately some Christians will part ways over prophetic interpretation, others avoid it because it’s too confusing, and some think it’s irrelevant to everyday life. We don’t have to make these mistakes. All Scripture – including prophecy – is inspired by God and is profitable for us to read and think about. In this message, we see how Daniel’s prophetic visions from over 2500 years ago are relevant to us today.

After 60-plus years as a captive in Babylon, Daniel saw first-hand that God is in control. But his faith was more than head knowledge, it shaped his daily life. This Sunday we’ll look beyond the lions in Daniel chapter 6 and see that Daniel stayed calm during the crisis because he’d built some good faith-driven habits into his life. When threatened with becoming lion food he knew exactly what to do. When you face a crisis, you can know your next step from Daniel’s example.

Everyone has a story, and God is working in amazing ways. One of the most encouraging things we can do is listen to each other’s stories of how God drew us to himself. Last week we saw how a proud and powerful ruler mocked God but then after a period of suffering turned to worship the one true God. Unfortunately, his grandson only followed in the proud footsteps of his grandfather, and it didn’t end well as we’ll see in Daniel chapter 5.

Trust matters. Today, many don’t trust institutions from politics to big business to church. Often these institutions give people reason for their cynicism to fester. If the leaders of an organization are untrustworthy, that organization is either already in trouble or headed for it. That’s why integrity in leaders is so important and we take that seriously here at CityView. Leading the church is a holy trust for which leaders must give an account before God. So, who leads CityView Church and how do they do it? We are an elder-led church. But what does that mean? We’ll see what the Bible has to say about this today.

With so many resources accessible, it’s easy to develop opinions that appear reliable. Actually, the available information can take us far in life. But there’s one area of life where we can’t make progress until we learn to trust what is outside our resources. This Sunday, we’ll consider two components that prompt progress, in this one area, when nothing else will work.

Jesus ascended to heaven, so how can he be with us now? The disciples got used to doing life with Jesus and expected to become important players in his government when he’d overthrow the Romans. But Jesus didn’t follow their script, and instead informed them he had to die and leave them. In the same conversation, he told them it was for their good that he was going. Having the benefit of hindsight, we know now that it was for our good that Jesus died – He paid the penalty for our sin. And since Jesus ascended to heaven, the Holy Spirit comes alongside us and lives in us. We’ll talk about the Holy Spirit this Sunday: Who he is and what he does.

Gideon was an unexpected hero and leader in Israel’s history. He was a judge (leader) who you can read more about in the book of Judges, chapters 6-8. His background and social standing would not have tipped you to the great role he played in biblical history. But he had one thing going for him. His transformation from zero to hero began when the angel of the Lord encountered him and said, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” (Judges 6:11-12).

It would do us well to think about Jesus’ birth every day of the year. 2000+ years ago God took on flesh and became human like us. Yet he was also unlike us in that he remained God. Because he is God, Jesus lived a perfect life and never sinned. Because he became human, he was qualified to be a sacrifice for us humans and pay the debt our sin has incurred. He “came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45). In Christ, our sins are forgiven, we have a Savior who has walked a mile in our shoes and will always be with us. That’s something to be mindful of every day of the year. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift, Merry Christmas!

The last book of the Old Testament has some things to say about this; so, we’ve been looking at the message of Malachi to identify and expose some common worship disorders that keep us from experiencing God’s best. From Malachi 3:6-12 we’ll see what the truest indicator of our worship is. In this passage, God makes a stunning accusation against his people, but also offers more blessing than they can imagine if they turn things around.

Sometimes you get a great deal on a product because a store has too much of it and has to slash the price to move the overstock. One thing the world does not have an overstock of is kindness. Yet kindness is expected of Christ-followers (Ephesians 4:32), even when it’s not returned by others. So, how do we do it? By walking in the Spirit – following Jesus closely – and letting his character shine through us. Heavenly father, I pray that this day I may live in your presence, and please you more and more.
Lord Jesus, I pray that this day, I may take up my cross and follow you. Holy Spirit, I pray that this day you will fill me with yourself and cause your fruit to ripen in my life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

- I am a child of God.
- God is my Father.
- Heaven is my home.
- Every day is one day nearer.
- My Savior is my brother.
- Every Christian is my brother too.
Believing and acting on these truths will transform the way you live. This Sunday, we’ll wrap up our series with a sermon on the “City yet to come,” our heavenly home. But what is heaven like? The “City yet to come” is better than you can imagine and is worth living for right now. Heaven is our home, and Jesus is preparing it for us right now.

Choosing the correct path is never about the condition of the path, but always about the direction it is taking you. Right and wrong paths look similar. They both have hills, turns and potholes. The difference is the direction. You’ll know the difference based on the correction and instruction God gives along the way. The better you know Him, the more clearly you’ll understand the difference between correction and instruction.
