This week on the show, I chatted with James Green, a young man running over 50k for a great cause. It was an inspiring conversation you won't want to miss.James Greene is fundraising for The Kevin Bell Repatriation TrustJames Greene, a 24-year-old trainee solicitor from County Armagh, is organizing a 50-kilometer ultramarathon in New York City on March 15, 2025, to raise funds for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust (KBRT). This charity assists bereaved families in Ireland by alleviating the financial burden of repatriating loved ones who have died abroad

James Greene is fundraising for The Kevin Bell Repatriation TrustJames's route begins in Woodside, Queens" where he once lived” and concludes at Rory Dolans Bar and Restaurant in Woodlawn, the Bronx, where Kevin Bell resided. The path also passes notable landmarks such as Yankee Stadium and Gaelic Park, where Kevin Bell was scheduled to play on the day of his tragic accident.

Motivated by his experiences in New York and a deep connection to the KBRT mission, James aims to raise at least £1,000, reflecting the typical costs associated with a single repatriation, ranging from a few thousand pounds to up to £20,000.

This week I had the pleasure of chatting with Danny Brown the Chairman of the New York Minor Board, we had a very interesting and informative chat, and I hope you enjoy it. Below are a few links if you want to learn more about the NY Minor Board GAA

In 1970 a group of dedicated volunteers came together and formed the New York Minor Board. This board was dedicated to the development of the GAA in the tri-state area and within a few years 19 clubs from all over NYC, New Jersey and Connecticut had affiliated to the board with competitions from U10-U21. Several of the clubs that were formed back in those early years are still around today with clubs such as NY Rangers, St Raymonds, St Joesphs, Rockland, St Barnabas, Westput, New Haven and the NY Celtics tracing their origins back to the early 1970’s. Some of the clubs that existed then that do not exist now are Fordham Shamrocks, Fordham Gaelic Athletic Club, Good Shepherd (Inwood), JFK (Long Island), Park Slope Shamrocks (Brooklyn), New Hyde Park Gaels (Long Island)

I had a lovely interview with my Co-Host of Ireland Calls Tommy Smyth enjoy our chat!

Tommy has a lot to say about football, or soccer as Americans know it. Smyth has one of the most recognizable Irish broadcast voices in the world as he has been a sports broadcaster and soccer analyst on ESPN since 1993.

Smyth became well known in the New York Irish community by commentating on games in Gaelic Park in the Bronx. He soon became known as the “Voice of New York’s Gaelic Park.”

While working for ESPN, Smyth has done commentary on many international games, the UEFA Champions League, and even several world cup matches. However, his commentary isn’t limited to sports. Smyth’s voice can be heard on WNBC on St. Patrick’s Day as he serves as a commentator for the New York City parade. In 2008, he was chosen as the 247th Grand Marshal for the celebration.

Tommy Smyth is particularly known for his memorable trademark comments during games. He often calls a goal “a bulge in the old onion bag.” He signs off every commentary saying “Tommy Smyth with a Y,” ensuring no one forgets his name.

This week I am joined by Williams Cole. The great Grandson of Mary Jane and O Donovan Rossa . enjoy our chat folks. Thank you for listening let me know your thoughts

“The fools, the fools, the fools! They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.”

Pádraig Pearse’s melodramatic graveside oration at the funeral of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa in Glasnevin in August 1915, indeed, the entire event, with its massive attendance and global press coverage, is widely credited as having been an important trigger for the Easter Rising and the bloody path to Irish independence.

In a photo of the committee that organized O’Donovan Rossa’s funeral, the cortège of which drew 8,000 participants, you will see the faces of many well-known figures from the Rising and beyond: Pearse, Arthur Griffith, James Connolly, Thomas Clarke.

But one figure is conspicuous by her absence, despite her pivotal role in arranging the funeral: Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa’s widow, Mary Jane.

She was keenly aware of the public relations potential of the event. As an author, touring speaker, and contributor to many news outlets, a woman with a high degree of awareness of what we would call PR today, she had purposely set about utilizing her husband’s burial to leverage higher Republican goals.

She even wrote a letter, published in the extensive funeral program pamphlet, reminding attendees that Jeremiah, despite rumors he had softened in his latter years, had remained a fervent nationalist intent on ending all British rule in Ireland up until the end of his life.

A poet and author who had for years helped her exiled husband to run a nationalist newspaper in New York, Mary Jane reportedly over-ride her husband’s wishes to be buried in his native Cork, opting instead for the pomp, ceremony, and publicity of a Glasnevin burial, where she purchased a plot for 20 pounds.
