Afraid of Change, Character Defect - The Other Side of Addiction with Marlin Beckstead.

Today's guest Marlin Beckstead started his addiction to Marijuana and Cocaine in High School. He dropped out of school so he could deal, the drugs he loved to use. Realizing something needed to change, he joined the Navy. However, he found himself doing the same thing. In a short 2-1/2 years he was kicked out for drugs. In and out of jails, ten years total of being incarcerated for drugs and criminal behaviors due to his addiction, he decided it was time to change. Many failed attempts went from one Recovery Center to another, until he found The Other Side Academy. Marlin is now a Concrete Superintendent for a large concrete company in Salt Lake City. Marlin's message is this... People do recover after a long history of recovery failure and abuse, I'm living proof! John Libutti was born in Provo, Utah. At an early age, he learned that he didn’t like doing hard things. It started with his newspaper route. He discovered that if he acted like he was going to deliver the papers, but really threw them away, he would still get paid for doing nothing. He found that lying and stealing were easy ways out of tough confrontations. He began stealing from his family and telling them what they wanted to hear to avoid conflict and accountability. In his senior year he started hanging around a rough crowd and smoking weed. He dropped out of high school, and the weed quickly led to other drugs. He would do pretty much any substance that he could get his hands on, but his drug of choice was heroin. He began committing crimes to support his lifestyle, which inevitably led to jail time. For the next 7 years or so, John was in and out of jail, burning bridges with his family, and pushing all who loved him away. He got married, but only ended up dragging his wife through the misery with him. He eventually ended up in prison, where he learned how to be a better criminal and how to continue this destructive lifestyle. For the next 3 years he bounced back and forth between prison, a halfway house, and short periods out on the streets. While this cycle continued, his sister told him about The Other Side Academy. It took some time and one more stay in prison, but he finally got there and was accepted in 2016. At The Other Side Academy, John learned valuable lessons about integrity, accountability, and how to care for others. He learned to face problems and push through them, finally correcting the childhood behavior of taking the path of least resistance. He spent most of his time at the Moving Company and after 2 years was helping run it. Along with this, he was given a position in the house where he was in charge of a group of guys and their personal growth. He loved this and started to love who he was becoming. In 2019, after his 3rd year at The Other Side Academy, he was hired as a full-time staff member. He now gets the opportunity to give others hope and to help them become the best versions of themselves. Today's guest is Mary Jo McMillen, A powerhouse in the recovery community here in Salt Lake City, UT. Mary Jo has been in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and taking care of my mental health since September 16, 1985. She's an Advanced Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor who has been working with people impacted by substance use since 1987. From 1987 to 2010 she worked in residential and outpatient SUD treatment programs. In 2006 she became one of the founding Board Members for Substance Abuse Recovery Alliance (SARA) - Utah, and later in 2009 the name changed to Utah Support Advocates for Recovery (USARA). In 2010 I became USARA’s Executive Director. I am grateful for USARA’s work as a non-profit organization and fortunate to have personally grown in my role as a community leader. My beginning with USARA was dedicated primarily to advocacy work which came intentionally from listening to and representing the voices and experiences of the people in recovery from substance use. This includes thousands of Utahans, both individuals and family members, that have courageously committed to improving their health and well being while living life in recovery from and SUD. Mary Jo's work at USARA has been to bring people in recovery from substance use into the discussions that include participation on committees, forums, education panels, local councils, and state government including Utah legislators, where decisions about programs, policies and funding are made. People who have been personally impacted by the effects and consequences of substance use as well as people who are in recovery have directly influenced the changes needed with expungement policies, criminal justice reform, and the expansion of medicaid. Utahans in recovery have become a growing and visible community that has increased the state and local awareness and acceptance that substance use is a public health concern, that has caused devastating illness, and loss of life from overdoses and suicides. USARA’s advocacy work elevates the need for integrated physical and behavioral health treatment, need for affordable and supported stable housing, and the improvement of medical patient/client care within our healthcare system for people who have substance use and mental health disorders. USARA’s greatest accomplishment is in the development of an extraordinary leadership team, staff, volunteers and community partnerships who have all worked collaboratively to plan, create and implement a continuum of non-clinical, community based recovery support services and a network of resources for people who want help to establish and live life in recovery. We have accomplished this through the work we have done statewide with 5 Recovery Community Centers, 35 staff, countless volunteers, and our Board of Directors who are all people in recovery and family members. Have a box of tissues ready before listening to this one! In this episode our good friend Jon Redd pours his emotions out on the table. Jon talks about his addiction, letting down his family, himself and the day he found out he had cancer. Jon struggled with addiction throughout his teenage years and went into residential treatment at the age of 19 for alcohol and drug use. After treatment, he earned a degree in Psychology from the U of U and attended the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Training program through the Graduate School of Social Work at the U of U. Upon graduation he got married, started a family, and went on to earn an MBA from BYU. Within months of finishing his MBA program Jon was diagnosed with advanced stage thyroid cancer in early 2003. As a result of complications from his first surgery Jon had a severed branch of his spinal accessory nerve and was prescribed oxycontin. This quickly progressed to include alcohol and other mind-altering substances. Jon’s story involves a 14-year struggle with drugs and alcohol, losing his career, and nearly losing his family. He tried using the knowledge from his education to fight this disease and felt too much shame to ask for help. In desperation he said a prayer and asked for help. His prayer was answered in a remarkable way and continues to be answered every day since. On Aug 24, 2017, he went into a treatment program and now has an opportunity to work in recovery where he uses his experience to help others. Jon is in the process of opening a residential treatment facility that will have an emphasis on spiritual connection. He is actively involved in AA with his personal recovery and serves on the board for the non-profit recovery club in his community. Thank you Jon for taking time out of your day to be with us. Brendan Hermanson is today's guest. Brendan suffered a back injury around 1998 when he was 30 years young. The doctors he looked to for help, would pull out a prescription pad and write a prescription for one pain killer after another, upping the dose along the way. First it was Vicodin, then Percocet, and then the one Perdue Pharma said was not addicting, OXYCONTIN. For several months he was even prescribed Fentanyl Patches. This went on for about 10 years. Brendan started getting sicker and sicker. At this point he started realizing it was the prescription meds, they were killing him, he had become an addict. As you can imagine, Brendan was very angry at the doctors. He finally had enough of his induced Hell and reached out to a couple family members asking for help. Brendan surrendered to fate; he's now been clean for over 5 years. In this amazing episode Brendan's message to our listeners is this.... 1) Addiction/Recovery is a self-help program. 2) Surrender and take only what you need. 3) Have something to believe in. 4) Don't enter recovery to change behavior, do it rather to start something new. 5) Sober friends and family should take caution, because the active addict is very manipulative. 6) What have you done to your body? In today's episode Robyn Sims from The Other Side Academy interviews our very own Al Richards. For the first time, Al shares his story of his 8 year weekend alcohol and cocaine use. Al worked for a Manufacturing Company in SLC for 24 years. He was transferred to Kentucky in 1998 to help get a new plant running more efficiently. In 2001 he returned to SLC, and within a short period of time his responsibilities grew. He oversaw the production in four different manufacturing areas, and had two to three different projects going at the same time. He was also responsible for the Parts Room, Housekeeping and Property Maintenance. Had 43 employees he was responsible for. He was on the Safety Committee and a Certified member of the Emergency Response Team. The pressure and stress of things started taking its toll. Al was offered a line of cocaine at a party, his response was a quick yes! I felt like I needed something to help me take the edge off, I was stressed 24/7, Al states. Al was already deep into his addiction when he met Jenann. Over time they moved in together along with the skeletons in Al’s closet. They eventually Married in 2009 and enjoyed drinking with friends on weekends and this is where Al’s skeletons would come out to play. Al would sneak around behind everyones back hiding his secret (especially Jenann) to get the fix he now craved. This quickly turned into Al’s new escape and was becoming too much to hide. Jenann and friends had no idea he was hiding a dark secret. Finally, the inevitable call came and smacked him in the face. Al’s job of 24 years hit him with a UA. He tried to lie his way out until the results showed otherwise! Reality sunk in, he just introduced the world to the REAL Al. Wow! Now that hit Al like a ton of bricks as he looked in the mirror and allowed the truth to sink in. He was a liar and manipulator his whole life, even a few of his closest friends didn't trust him. Al falls into a deep depression. Jenann continues trying to motivate him, carrying all the weight of life. Things continue to spiral out of control. Jenann's dad overdosed, they lost their home a year later. They lost Everything! Al was so broken he couldn’t even get out of bed. Then one day he decided it was time to do some soul searching. Who was Al Richards, he found out he wasn't the guy he thought he was. That was the beginning of his journey, Al states, I have worked my ass off to become a better me. A man with integrity, who has nothing but love to share. My past is exactly that, my past, it's not who I AM today. I can honestly look at myself in the mirror for the very first time and be proud of who I am as a husband, father, papa, son, brother and friend. I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. Today's guest Jordan Holdaway was raised by a single mom and lacked respect for authority. Jordan was rebellious and a thrill seeker at a very young age into adulthood. He based his life off a mindset of testing any and ALL BOUNDARIES. With this type of mentality he found himself drifting into a life of drugs and criminal behavior starting in High School and into adulthood. Getting into methamphetamines led to his first felony charges at an early age of 23. This marked the beginning of many years in and out of prison, he became a career criminal and drug dealer. His bad choices took 11 years of his life incarcerated and unimaginable damage done to his family as well as the community. He was looking at another 15 year prison sentence hanging over him, something had to change? Jordan was accepted at The Other Side Academy, it changed his life in many ways. TOSA hired Jordan to manage the Academy's Property Management and Construction Departments as a licensed General Contractor. This man definitely changed his life for the better. In this episode Collin shares his story of being brought up in an LDS family, going on a mission. His life changed after his mission, he became an addict, Addiction Doesn't Discriminate! Colin Cooper was born in Orem Utah to Doug and Denise Cooper who are still together to this day. He had a normal childhood for the most part, things were pretty good. Collin always felt love especially from his mom, he was a mama’s boy and still is to this day. After high school Collin served an LDS mission. After the Mission had some back problems and got into drugs and alcohol, not knowing the outcome of it all. He spent the next 20 years or so, in and out of jail and institutions. And Vincent van Gogh says it best. "Success is sometimes the outcome of a whole string of failures". Today's guest Jimmy Lane talks about his many failures in life. We believe this is something everyone of us can relate to. Jimmy expresses how many times he's failed and rebuilt and failed and rebuilt before finally understanding how childhood Trauma was a major factor in every aspect of his life. How he still faces heartbreaks and disappointment even today. Jimmy went from a 6 figure job a painted picture of who he was but so empty inside. From absolutely destroying everything he had to finding a little glimpses of hope in SC. That led him on a Journey that was no longer painted perfect. It was a raw reality. His life was twisted and turned to a point he had no idea who he was. Going through a treatment center in South Carolina changed his life. The minute he connected on a spiritual level and understood how his childhood Trauma was affecting him as an adult, things changed drastically. That acceptance was such a major part in my progress, says Jimmy. I left SC and put every last dollar I had into building a rehab center back in Michigan. He's now waiting on the 501c3 to be finalized before they can get up and running. New Directions Recovery will hold 70 men for long term treatment, no insurance needed. Offering vocational and tons of other options, including TRAUMA Therapy. In a nutshell I'm kind of all over the place. I want to give a revised version of my life and how it's led me to where I am today and why it means so much to me. Jason is the founder/president of a nonprofit organization called Addicts Fighting Back (AFB). While he was in treatment in 2019 he had an idea of creating a social organization for individuals struggling with substance use. Treatment is just a small part of recovery, WHAT HAPPENS AFTER TREATMENT? This is where Addicts Fighting Back comes in. We encourage and invite people from the recovery community to join AFB and be a part of their events and communities. Addicts Fighting Back has three weekly ALL Pathways to Recovery Meetings. One in Utah County, Salt Lake County and Tooele. AFB is a social organization which gives individuals an opportunity to have fun in a safe environment, while building connections with each other and growing their support network. Some of the activities we do include, sober softball teams, sober bowling teams, sober volleyball, community service, homeless outreach, movie nights, fundraising events, and speaker meetings to name a few. We believe having a purpose and building connections is key to sustaining recovery. They have a Facebook Group that has over 4k members. It's a great tool to use for resources, events and support. Our goal is to show individuals that there is mass support out there after treatment and that you are not alone. Utah is blessed to have such a strong and diverse recovery community Jason says. Today's guest is Dylan Gibson from The Other Side Academy. Dylan spent 16 long years as a heroin addict and spent a total of 9 years incarcerated. His addiction accumulated a long history of criminal activity and poor choices. I became a monster Dylan says, and was at my rock bottom for many years. At the age of 38 I was tired and wanted something different in life. I needed help! The Other Side Academy saved my life!! Overcoming the stigma of addiction is a message our guest Kayla Jensen wants to share. She recently had a baby this past February. Even though Kayla has been clean and sober over four years she has still been treated like an active addict. After giving birth you would think it would be a time of joy and celebration. Instead Kayla was afraid the hospital was going to contact DCFS to have her baby taken away due to her past record and drug abuse. She mentioned during the show, she was starting to FEEL LIKE DIRT again. This is a show you don't want to miss!!!! Kayla is a woman in long term recovery, which has allowed her to be a wife and a mother to 2 beautiful children and live a life of fulfillment and purpose. She is also going to school to become a social worker in order to be an advocate for others in recovery. She has a strong desire for criminal justice reform and advocating for more equitable treatment. This is her story now, it was not always this way. She struggled for many years with substance use which led her down many different paths including jail and prison. Entering the judicial system so young shaped her in many ways. Today's guest is Randall Carlisle. Those of you who are Utah Natives will definitely recognize this name. Randall was seen every night on Channel Four ABC News. Throughout his career he had A Dirty Little Secret. CAREER - Randall Carlisle had an illustrious 54 year career in broadcasting. He won the Ohio State radio announcing contest at the age of 14 and was offered a part time job at a small radio station in northeastern Ohio. He continued in radio through college working in Columbus, Akron and finally landing a job in the major market of Detroit. Lured by the prospects of a bigger paycheck he re-directed his career to television where he spent the next 40 plus years as an anchor/reporter in Colorado Springs, Dayton, Minneapolis, Dallas and Salt Lake City, most recently for more than 20 years at ABC4. He won three Emmys, appeared on Good Morning America, has interviewed luminaries like Peter Jennings, President Jimmy Carter, Alice Cooper, was at Kent State during the national guard shootings and covered numerous national political conventions. He retired from television in 2017 and is now working as a media and community relations specialist at Odyssey House of Utah, the largest and one of the oldest treatment centers in the state. Throughout his career Randall had a dirty little secret he tried to hide from everyone. He was a functional alcoholic. The disease ran in his family and he started drinking at 14. He was always sober at work, but his self medicating began daily after work and on weekends. The true definition of a functional alcoholic. While his professional life seemed wonderful, his personal life suffered as the result of his alcoholism. He was married and divorced four times and his reliance on alcohol increased as he grew older. 11 years ago, when he began blacking out every time he drank, he decided enough was enough. He went to detox and went through the Intensive Outpatient Program at UNI called “Recovery Works.” Being a slow learner he had to go through that program twice. RECOVERY - Randall is now more than 10 years sober and attends AA meetings regularly. He loved doing news stories on recovery while working at ABC4 including several on 10,000 Beds. He jumped at the opportunity when he was offered a job at Odyssey House. “I can now focus all my energy on spreading the good news about the recovery movement,” says Carlisle. “I love meeting our Odyssey clients and watching their success. Sobriety has brought me more happiness than I ever thought possible. For the first time in my entire life I have learned to love myself. In this episode Ronnie shares his journey of theft, running with gangs and drug addiction. Ronnie was born and raised in Long Beach California. His mom and dad were addicted to meth so his aunt and uncle took him in at the age of 7. At 13 he started getting involved with gangs and drugs - by 15 he ran away from his aunt and uncle's and was already doing full blown robbery's and heavily addicted to crack and meth. Ronnie went to juvenile hall and camp programs till he became an adult and started going to real jails. His meth addiction was out of control - in and out of jail - homeless, miserable for years. As time went on he started getting into selling drugs heavily. His cousins were gang leaders so he had big weight in the meth and drug trade. I've been stabbed on 2 different occasions, robbed at gunpoint in a home invasion, set up - beaten up you name it Ronnie says. In 2010 his mom and family took a trip to Utah where his mom ended up staying permanently - she started going to the LDS church (she also had a long fight with addiction) His mom and kids got baptized. Ronnie was going in and out of jail and his wife just got out of prison. She moved to Utah and finally got her life together... She got baptized 2018. I was baptized into the Mormon church which changed his life forever ♾️ Ronnie had a spiritual awakening at 36 years old - He was endowed into the temple in 2019 - then got a calling to serve a full-time mission in the addiction recovery program. These events have changed my life dramatically. Ronnie now helps and serves and loves people. He has an awesome relationship with his Lord and savior Jesus Christ and his heavenly father and wouldn't give it in for anything. In this episode we discuss Mental Restraints with our guest JD Greenhalgh and our guest cohost Dr. Mike Smith. Life has a way of throwing us a lot of curveballs, especially when you're searching for your why. JD has a great work ethic and a ton of integrity. All he wants to do in life is support his family, help others and eventually become a Public Speaker. Personally, I believe we allow our thoughts to get in our way/mental restraints. We allow roadblocks to get in our way which takes us in a different direction, a direction that leads us further away from our why. JD talks about going from one job to another, doing everything he can to support his family. However, he keeps running into the same situation over and over again. In this episode we sit down with Brice and JoAnne to share stories of redemption and courage. Brice grew up in what most might call an ideal family. No great trauma, divorce, abuse, neglect or the like. Brice says we did things together, laughed, cried, had anger and had joy. I was naïve to the trauma others live with and face on a regular basis. Brice has ADHD, a fact he learned only later in life. He also might be on the autism spectrum. He's an introvert learning to be an extrovert. Like many with my naïve understanding of the world I would help serve food to “the less fortunate” during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Brice found this annoying and self-serving. If I were going to reach out and actually help others, he wanted it to be more than just a couple times a year. At the same time of this realization, he divorced my first wife. His world as he knew it disappeared, he struggled for 10 years to rebuild a new and different life. One of greater compassion for those who suffer and are hurting. Since that time, Brice has been attracted to ways where he can help others. For a brief moment he read stories to children at the Road Home in Salt Lake City Utah. This absolutely terrified me, Brice shares. This is where I first admitted that to help others I had to change from an introvert to an extrovert. For 5 years he volunteered for Bikers Against Child Abuse. This is where he gained confidence in himself and learned to love even the most broken that humanity has to offer. It's Joann’s brother who introduced me to the idea of a sober living. In working with those struggling with addiction, every day I get to witness a lost sheep coming home and my heart fills with joy with each person I meet. I love to hear their stories of redemption and courage. I strive to be a champion for each of them. Not everyone I meet will overcome their addiction. Some I will see more than once. But that’s okay. Life is a journey to be lived, not merely a moment where damnation or redemption is decided. Our guest today is Zach and he's an Alcoholic, in recovery. Zach grew up in Sandy, UT. His years growing up were good, however he had many traumas that affected him. He found drugs and Alcohol while in high school. He used alcohol so he didn't have to feel. He felt like it was just the thing for him to do to have fun. Zach played sports when he was younger and loved them. It got to a point where he would rather smoke pot and drink instead. The trauma Zach went through led him to believe that he couldn’t be loved and that he didn’t deserve to be a successful person. Quitting jobs when things got hard or at times when he didn’t believe he was learning anything. Having gone through addiction and now being in Recovery my life has become something that I want to embrace Zach says. I have found love for myself and the love for others. Zach was able to go to treatment after his last run with drinking and drugs. This was a Godsend because it led him to a path of freedom and joy having the lord and savior Jesus Christ in his life. Zach now has more than a year sober and he's been working through The Steps and becoming the Man he was always destined to be. The Other Side of Addiction with Special Guest, Crystal Rose. In today's episode we talk with Crystal Rose. Crystal grew up here in Salt Lake City. Growing up we didn't have much but we loved what we had. I always knew from a young age I wanted to help children living in difficult situations. That led me down the path to becoming a Social Worker, Crystal says. Most people Crystal works with don't know this about her. Crystal grew up around addiction just like some of the people she works with. She has lost family to drug use and watched family be taken into DCFS custody. It always broke my heart and I wanted to help them. As I got older and into my career, I have helped several families get their children back and off substances. It's a pure joy to see. The hardest part of all this for me is I have never used Drugs and I have a hard time at times understanding that side of things. I just want everyone to see that you can live a better life without drugs. In today's episode our guest Robyn Sims talks about a journey that changed her. When Robyn was released from jail in March of 2016, she began a journey that would change her life forever. She knew that if something didn’t change she would be incarcerated again soon enough. She found herself at a crossroads. Was she going to go back to the same old people and places she had been getting high with, or was she going to do something different? Robyn started the 7-mile walk from Salt Lake County Jail to The Other Side Academy. Robyn’s stay at The Academy was a terrifying process of coming to terms with who she had become: someone who had lost everything of value, including her integrity and self-worth. But she saw a community of peers who were just like her, who had changed their lives, and who wanted to support her to do the same. “The most valuable lesson I learned at The Academy is that vulnerability is strength and that I can never give up. Trying isn’t enough, I have to do it.” Over the years, Robyn completely transformed and in doing so, became an effective change agent in the transformation of others. She was one of the first graduates to be hired on as a staff member. She went on to become a founding member of The Other Side Academy Denver and to help build it from the ground up. She leads the Legal Department as well as the Community Outreach effort. Robyn plays a critical role in guiding prospective students through the justice system and into The Other Side Academy. Robyn's hope is to be that beacon of hope for those like her who are still lost. She wants to use her story to inspire others to take action to better their lives. She will always be vigilant in keeping The Other Side Academy a safe place for broken people to heal. Our guest today is Clay Josewski. In high school, Clay was popular, got good grades, and played sports. What started as just experimenting with drugs and alcohol quickly got out of control. By the time he was in college, he was a full blown cocaine addict. He managed to still get a degree, but the consequences of his drug use began to catch up with him. In 2009 he got 2 DUIs in the space of a month. He also found 2 of his friends dead from heroin overdoses. For the next 10 years, Clay was in a downward spiral of addiction and criminal activity. He came to a point when he was facing multiple criminal charges in his small town, and he decided to make a change. In lieu of going to prison, Clay was given the opportunity to come to The Other Side Academy. His initial commitment was for a 2-year stay, but he ended up staying for 4.5 years. During this time, he developed emotional maturity, self worth, and accountability. He formed meaningful relationships and desired to give back. Now he’s a full time staff member, helping others achieve the transformation he did. Clay says that saving lives is the new drug. Joe overdosed several times, his kids witnessed a couple of them. He started with Opioids then moved to heroin because it was cheaper and easier to get. Joe talks about how addicts fear the unknown. Our guest today is Jacqueline Mann Garrison, a woman in Long term recovery. Her sobriety date is August 28, 2014. Jackie got sober and clean at age 31, when the consequences were no longer acceptable to HER anymore. Prior to that point as a result of her drinking and using. Jackie had been raped, stabbed, lost her children, and she was in and out of lock up. Her family wanted nothing to do with her, she was also gang affiliated. Once she truly surrendered to realization, knowing she was probably going to die if she continued. After drinking and using for 16 yrs she was given the gift of desperation. The 12 step program saved my life, Jackie says. I was introduced to a sponsor and a God of my understanding. I was given directions on how to live a life of abstinence. Through meetings, service and the 12 steps I was given a 2nd chance at life. The fellowship and community loved me until I could love myself. I'm forever grateful to those who supported me in being where I am today. I've worked in the recovery industry the last 7 1/2 years. Our guest today is Cherice Nicole Ells. She's a daughter, granddaughter, co-parent, mother, and wife. She's an administrator for the non-profit Beyond Addiction Mosaic (B.A.M), an advocate for the unsheltered and addicted community, the facility manager at Wasatch Recovery Treatment Center, and works at JSS with individuals on drug court probation and federal probation. She is also an addict in active recovery, with a triple felony conviction and recently celebrated 3 years of sobriety. (Aug 12) Cherice grew up in an average to upper middle-class neighborhood in Taylorsville. Both her parents worked full-time. Her dad was a welder and her mom worked at a bank. She was an only child (on her mom's side) until the age of 14. As a teenager she was independent, opinionated, a free spirit, and often the life of the party or at least the center of attention. She married her best friend at the age of 18. Two children later, they divorced because they realized they were better at being friends and co-parents than life partners. Cherice later married again. In the beginning, it was wonderful, as most marriages are. A combined family of “yours and mine” that they called “ours.” This relationship unwillingly introduced her to methamphetamine, which eventually became her drug of choice (DOC). The marriage spiraled out of control with physical, emotional, and drug abuse. She left the marriage and began “couch surfing” with friends and family, all the while diving deeper and deeper into the “game.” Cherice was eventually jobless, homeless, living out of her car, doing and selling drugs on a regular basis. Cherice met her current husband while using in August of 2015. (Both are now in long term recovery and never happier) August 12, 2019, would be both the worst and best day of her life. She found herself walking across the border of Mexico into the U.S. with a significant amount of drugs strapped to her body. The moment a border agent pulled her to the U.S. side and began searching her, her drug addicted life ended, and another life was about to begin. She spent eight months in federal custody and was given a second chance at life. On her birthday, April 6, 2020, she was released from federal custody, put on a plane, sent home, and given six months in-home incarceration with three years of federal probation. The court system set her up to fail but she was determined to succeed. Her probation did not allow her to leave home except for probation requirements. It didn’t allow her to have a job, but it expected her to pay costs associated with probation and to financially support herself. Through ingenuity, family and co-parent support, and her sheer will to succeed and survive, she made it to the end of in-home incarceration. Failure was not an option. She landed a job in November of 2020 at Wasatch Recovery and quickly became a leader amongst her peers. She worked diligently to complete her court-ordered 200 hours of community service working with people in addiction and recovery. These opportunities helped her to find her passion — helping others find joy, happiness, and life through healing, sobriety, and self-care. In today's episode our guest Jennifer Seitzer talks about Ambiguous Grief! Unclear or inexact because a choice between alternatives has not been made. Jennifer battled with alcohol and pills for many years, she was born into addiction and abuse. Jennifer is now 19 years sober, however addiction is still in her life. Her 32 year old son is battling his own demons. He just finished his third stent in recovery and is staying in a Sober Living Facility. Jennifer has done quite a bit of volunteer work for the local recovery center when she lived in CT. She now lives in Arizona. you can't shovel sunshine! In today's episode we have retired Psychiatrist Mike Smith. Graduated from University of Utah School of Medicine. Many of those who battle with addiction are also battling with mental health issues and other demons. While in medical school, Mike was an emergency medicine honors student. He enjoyed working in the emergency department but decided that psychiatry was a better long-term fit. Completed psychiatry training at University of Utah, was chief resident in final year of psychiatry training. He was also the director of inpatient psychiatry at University Hospital for about ten years. Mike also had an active outpatient practice. Taught and supervised psychiatry residents and medical students. Also worked in university counseling center, and residential treatment center for eating disorders. Mike departed the university and worked in community mental health. Early user of telepsychiatry. Spent two years in jail, providing psychiatric services – fortunately allowed to leave at the end of the day. Other interests include family, flying, music, fitness, community/church involvement and he's currently writing a book. In today's show our guest Amanda Gafford talks about a program her daughter started while being incarcerated at the Utah State Prison called L.O.T.U.S (Lasting Outreach Treatment Understanding Sobriety). Amanda's daughter has been locked up for 5 years and has been working on a program after she found out she couldn’t do anything to help her situation due to her being on a 5 to life sentence, so she created L.O.T.U.S. I’m very proud of my daughter, says Amanda. She has worked her tail off to overcome her trials and tribulations. The Toole County Police Department was so impressed with the program, they're now helping spread the word. She picked up her first drink at the age of 19 after moving out of a toxic family home and marrying her first husband. Roger and Ashley both grew up as only children and have lived in North Carolina their entire lives. They have been married for 13 years, have 4 children, and share a sober date of 11/18/18. Their story of addiction and recovery is a bit unorthodox as they went through the entire process together, as a married couple. Two years after they married in 2009, Roger had dental surgery that proved to be the catalyst for their introduction into the world of opioids. After 8 years of active addiction, the couple came clean to their families and agreed to go to rehab, albeit with one request. Roger and Ashley wanted to go together. Through the grace of God and the determination of their family, this request was granted. Just a few months shy of their 10th wedding anniversary, Roger and Ashley entered rehab. They completed the program and left in December of 2018. In 2018, Roger and Ashley welcomed a fourth child, their first little girl into the family. Roger was able to return to the fire department and was recently promoted to lieutenant. Ashley is a stay-at-home mom and an addiction and recovery counselor. She specializes in working with couples and families. She also works as a life and wellness coach which allows her to work with individuals that have no attachment to the recovery & sober living world. The couple enjoys spending time with their family, the rare, occasional date night, and sharing their story to give hope and encouragement to other couples and families battling addiction. In today's episode we visit with Rachael Pioltini. Rachael grew up in a very dysfunctional home in Queens, New York. Her family moved to Utah in the early 90’s. Addiction and my family go almost hand in hand, says Rachael. Rachael's addiction took everything from her, family, her children, her freedom, morals, and values until one day the will and desire to quit became stronger than her will to use. Rachael's addiction left her homelessness and/or incarcerated at times. Today she and her father celebrate a milestone this past July. He is 32 years and she'll be celebrating 5 years of sobriety. (CONGRATULATIONS) I’m a grateful person in Long Term Recovery. What that means to me is today I get to live in the solution. I am a proud single mother to my 2 amazing teenage kids and a leader in my community. Today I’m a strong advocate for change and breaking the stigma associated with Substance Use Disorder. I Have chosen to not be anonymous. This helps me to help those ready looking for a solution to live free from it. I believe in Harm Reduction and meeting people where they are at with love and planting the seeds for when they are ready to find recovery. Today's guest Ryan Evans tells us where life took him once he snorted Meth for the first time at age 15. Ryan grew up in West Valley, UT. He loved sports, especially Football, football was his passion. He loves the Utes, Notre Dame and is a big fan of the 49'ers. The end of his Jr High year he began using Meth. By age 19 he was walking into Federal Prison. From there his addiction took him to State Prison. Ryan has now been sober for 6-1/2 years. He's started his own clothing company called So Elephant and he runs four Sober Living houses around the Salt Lake Valley and works for a flooring business. Today's guest Mark Feigh talks about his son's heroin addiction. Mark's son was homeless for over 10 years as a heroin addict. I didn’t realize that he had an addiction until I noticed a lot of valuables were missing. He was pawning them for drug money and kept his secret well until I found him passed out in the bathroom from an overdose. We started down the path of numerous rehab centers and he would start then never finish – he would disappear for weeks and months at a time. He would pop back into my life when he needed help or money. We would try another treatment center and he would bail out. It was a tough time in my life not knowing if he was OK or not. He met a girl that was an addict as well and they spent years out on the streets doing odd jobs and stealing money to get by. They would con family members into giving them money and letting them stay at their homes all while lying that they were clean just to get back on their feet again. Once the truth was revealed that they were still using, they would be escorted to the door where they would run to the next family member. This went on for years until finally they ended up with her mother in Central Utah where they did get a clean start. Not much to do in a very small town. They got and stayed clean for about 6 months with a relapse here and there.

Finally, they decided to kick it all together and had a baby girl who changed their lives for good. That little girl has been a godsend because they have been at her side ever since she was born and as to my knowledge, have not relapsed and are doing well.

Mark has been in the Real Estate business for over 24 years as a Real Estate Consultant helping over 500 families either buy their first home or sell and make the big move up. In this episode our guest Adriane Dailey goes deep into her personal life. Her parents divorced when she was 3 years old. Both parents remarried and each household couldn’t have been more different. Adriane's father was laid back, her mom’s on the other hand wasn't, I felt I needed to walk on eggshells Adriane says. There was never anything close to physical abuse by either parent, though she was a very sensitive girl and felt she lost herself somewhere through these years. She felt she needed to be good all of the time. She didn’t have the heart to choose a household so she moved back and forth every week until she went away to college.

Adriane says, I liked alcohol right away when I had the chance to drink it in high school and acquired a name for myself as I could drink most of the boys under the table. I began acting on an eating disorder when I was 17 or 18. A mix of anorexia or bulimia in an attempt to control the way I looked to be more appealing to others. I drank heavily at parties and in going to college I was really able to let loose. I was hospitalized a few times for alcohol poisoning and continued to drink recklessly though was able to graduate the 2 year program. I worked in a bar after that then moved to Whistler BC for a year, only to have to come home because the drinking was out of control and I couldn’t keep a job.

On returning back home my mom encouraged me to try out AA though after 1 meeting I knew I wasn’t ready yet.

I went back to school in an attempt to do something with my time and gain some direction. The student house I found myself in happened to have another tenant who was exactly the same as me..alcoholic with an eating disorder. We became codependent very quickly and moved in together the next year with plans of continuing our education. We had to part ways halfway through that year as the drinking was way out of control and we couldn’t function outside of shaking our way to the liquor store in the morning, taking shots in the bathroom of a store on the way home to curb the sickness and continuing the day drinking.

The year it was clear I needed to sober up I had 4 visits to the salvation army detox centre, I was arrested and finally landed in rehab, where I relapsed the day I came out. The next few months are foggy though I met someone in AA who got me into a sober living facility where I lived for 8 months. I relapsed 3 times there, though I finally got it after drinking my last beer in the shower in an attempt to curb the shakes I had from the night before.

I turned to alcohol with cracks in my soul and came out of the other side addicted and shattered. I have now been sober for over 9 years.

In this time I’ve lived in a couple of different cities, have done 2 plant medicine retreats and had a couple of jobs where I finally found a gateway to assist people in their own recovery. I graduated from social services while I was drinking though I discovered hypnotherapy a couple of years ago and further the capacity it has for changing people's lives.

I launched my business in January of this year where I aim to help people change the beliefs that are driving their addictive behavior and live free of the hold that alcohol has on them. I want to empower people to live fulfilled lives without the label of being alcoholic, because when they change the “why” they drink, it is no longer a problem or a solution. We recover far beyond letting the substance go; we have lived paths that force us to really look at ourselves and allow us to become greater people then who we could have ever been without walking this road.

In this episode our guest Ashton McDonald says he believes he was born with his addiction. Besides drugs and alcohol his #1 Addiction was telling lies. He also figured out he didn't get himself in any trouble when he drank alone. He used uppers (mainly meth) and drank alcohol, and his addiction led him to stealing, selling drugs, going to hospitals/jails/rehabs, and harming himself and others. Eventually through spirituality and great support from people in recovery he found recovery. Ashton has 5 years in recovery now. His life is so beautiful and he is in a position to help a lot of people. He goes to school to be a pastor and subscribes to an open and welcoming form of Christianity that affirms other faiths as well. He also partakes in Native American Spirituality and Buddhist meditation. As an ARCHES coach, he works for USARA helping people in emergency settings to find recovery that works for them. At age 5 Jim had his first taste of alcohol and fell in love with it that exact day. He became a weekly drinker by grade school into Jr. High, beer was his secret. Jim did well in school. At the beginning of his senior year he thought, I'll go to class every day and fail every one of them. I really didn't have a plan, Jim said. In this episode, we had the privilege of interviewing Amber. Her story is so powerful and she has used it to impact and save so many lives. Amber was rescued from human trafficking by local Utah law enforcement in 2016. She ended up in Utah State Prison a couple of months later. Since her exit, both from trafficking and prison, Amber has made it her mission to be In The Fight. She decided to go back to school and get a degree in Computer Science. She understands this is the only way to weaponize herself in investigation and apprehension. Amber made the decision to become a "monster hunter" while sitting in a cell understanding that trafficking was just as big of an issue, if not bigger, inside the prison Walls than outside the prison Walls. She had plenty of time, an over abundance of time, to think and strategize and plan for her release back into the same community that exploited her . She heard once, along her journey, that the most effective way for a woman to never encounter, or get out of any exploitation and abuse is.... education!!! And it turns out...that was the truth. Not just for women... ALL Humans. Education, advocacy, and investigations is her passion. When released from prison Amber began working for Utah Addiction Centers. Primary mental health and trauma focused. The owners of this facility are as equally passionate about anti-trafficking as Amber. Together they have done and will do amazing things. Amber is the mother of two sons ages 21 and 13. She's a daughter and a granddaughter. She cherishes her family. And in her free time she likes to read... In this episode, Diego Cortez shares how his family came to America from Mexico, and as a little boy, he did whatever it took to be accepted. Even though it never felt right to him, he went to extreme measures to make his peers happy and to be accepted by them; drugs, alcohol, theft, sex, gangs, and at a young age of 17, prison. She Had Brains, Beauty, and Success… So What Went Wrong?

In this episode our special guest Tricia had it all, but when her marriage fell apart at age 30, she turned to booze and drugs for the first time in her life.

Today’s special guest from SLC UT shares her story of what it was like battling, for almost 2 decades, a drug & alcohol addiction. Although considered a “late bloomer” to the drugs and alcohol world, Tricia’s alcoholism progressed quickly once started, finding herself in her first inpatient substance use treatment center at age 34.

Although her divorce was the catalyst that ultimately led her to use drugs & alcohol, most of her life Tricia dealt with what many addicts do, a poor self-image, feelings of low self-worth and not being enough, guilt/shame, & perfectionism. Drugs & alcohol became her new solution to dealing with many of these deep-rooted issues.

Tricia, a registered nurse for 36 years, talks about the allure of using meth for weight loss in order to feel like she was enough, valued and of worth. The shame she experienced around using methamphetamine, given the way she was raised and the health care career she worked in, was unbearable. She discusses the euphoria that came with being thin was what drove the sick cycle of continued drug use. She talks about the struggles she went through to be able to keep her children and her nursing license.

Tricia struggles to admit that she wouldn’t change a thing about her past to be able to have the life she has today, since so many innocent people were negatively affected by her choices. She does however love her clean & sober life and considers each day a gift. Tricia believes there is no shame in recovery. Gasping For Air: Being Drowned in Alcohol… God Blocked. The Other Side of Addiction with Special Guest: Sarah Elizabeth.

Today’s special guest, Sarah Elizabeth from New Jersey shares her story of what it was like battling alcoholism. This show will draw you in from the start. She started drinking at the early age of 14, 85% of her life was spent in addiction. She loved the feeling alcohol gave her, liquid confidence. Not having an off button became very scary. Even though she stopped during pregnancy she started as soon as she was able, her alcoholism progressed. Drinking alcohol from a sippy cup while driving with her kids in the car shows how far this addiction can take you. I AM NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE!

By some miracle or Grace from God, one night in the Spring of 2012 – I had an extraordinarily profound dream that ended with me being deliberately drowned in a huge vat of liquid. I woke up gasping for air. This dream was a message- I was drowning myself in alcohol.

As I lay frozen in utter deflation, a new thought popped into my head: "google local recovery meetings". I attended my first meeting feeling utterly desperate and ready to let others help me; I was willing to change.

Since that day, my life has transformed in miraculous ways. My journey in sobriety continues to unfold because I am always willing to do the right thing with an open heart. I finally believed that my life meant something.

I am grateful that the obsession to drink has been lifted and I found the courage to do the inner work to reach emotional sobriety. I live a more peaceful life, free of toxic drama and conflict. I am a better wife, mother, friend and friend to myself. I have a solution to live life more comfortably and more authentically. I am living a life true to myself.

I will never drink again because if I do, I will lose everything that I have gained since 2012. I have not had a drop of alcohol since August 20, 2012 and plan to stay sober one day at a time for the rest of my life.

My name is Yvonne Rodgers, I am a 57 female and a survivor of domestic violence. I am a mother of three children and a grandmother to three wonderful grandchildren. I have not always had things easy in my life, but have always been a very hard worker and supported myself. I have dealt with one of my children being addicted to both meth and heroin. Thankfully, he finally allowed me to put him into a rehab clinic and has been sober for over 8 years now.

I would like to share my story of having been both mentally and physically abused by my ex-husband for several years. The last and final incident, in which he snapped my arm, which required nine screws and a plate, leaving me permanently disabled in my dominant arm. He also pulled out a shotgun and pointed it at my head. I thought I was going to die then and there. He then sat down next to me and put the gun underneath his chin and stated, “with one pull of the trigger I can just blow my head off and it will all be over”. He was an alcoholic and extremely intoxicated during most of our marriage.

Hollie Bates is this week's guest. Her addiction started when she was about 18 yrs old. She was in a toxic marriage, life was heavy and her marijuana and alcohol habit progressed to meth and it spiraled pretty fast. Meth became important. And her family was non-existent.

I got in trouble with the law and was arrested and tried my first rehab in 2001. I stayed clean off meth for about 5 yrs but pills and alcohol were in my daily routine. I struggled with all of the relationships I was in and domestic violence was becoming the norm. The one thing that my heart knew was how much I loved my boys but I had no clue how to love myself. In 2008 I married my second husband whom I share my youngest son with. Our relationship was also toxic, I spiraled downhill from not dealing with past traumas and went back to using meth. He had just gotten out of a 6yr prison stay from federal prison and we couldn't get it together. In 2012 I tried another rehab and failed. The next 2 yrs thing got miserable. Drugs became the only focus and DCFC got called, my husband was back breaking the law and I got tired. I made the choice to clean Feb 28 2014 on my own. Mentally the psychosis had set in and my mind couldn't go anymore so I broke the meth pipe and started to go to AA. I have been clean since.

In Oct 2017, we lost my husband to his battle with addiction, by an accidental overdose of heroin. My family was broken and shocked that heroin was the cause of his death. I knew my recovery needed to be the most important thing I continued to do.

Chalese Stevens alongside her fiancé and love of her life, Brent runs the grill inside of Good Spirits where she also does PR, Marketing and events management. She has drive and motivation to help strengthen the community and small businesses. But she discovered her real purpose when she faced every mother’s worst nightmare in June of 2004. She lost her four-year-old son when he drowned in a water park swimming pool. From that day forward, her life transformed into a journey of healing her mind, body, and soul. This grieving mother has been able to face her deep loss by turning her story into the raw and vulnerable pages of her book, Finding 40: A Mother’s Walk With Grief. She now takes the lessons she has learned throughout her life to help others along their own personal path through her writings, speaking engagements, podcasts and energy healing.

Chalese has been blessed with two more beautiful children and is constantly creating memories. She also runs a nonprofit organization helping kids with congenital heart disease and writes children’s books as a way of keeping her boy’s legacy alive. She is a light to many with her big heart, infectious laugh, and passion for living her life today, for she knows that tomorrow is never a guarantee.

Having moved through two rounds of recovery, Portia Louder is no stranger to the hold that addiction can take on one’s life. Beginning her career in wedding photography and then moving into real estate, a relapse would take her down a road that landed her in prison for mortgage fraud, taking her from the top to wondering how she would make it through living in the concrete walls of despair. In this moment however, a comment from an inmate would spark a different train of thought for her.

With the support of her husband Chad and her family, Portia made a decision to find beauty in her experience, finding compassion, connection, and strength in her recovery journey, as well as her fellow inmates. Seeing resilience and light in the women she came to know while serving time, Portia became passionate about helping others to understand the challenges those in prison and recovery face while inspiring and encouraging those on the path of recovery and healing.
