Dr. Cornelius (Neal) Plantinga discusses sin as the "vandalism of shalom", corruption, perversion, and pollution in his book "Not the Way It's Supposed to Be: A Breviary of Sin". We cover the cumulative effects of sin as well as its parasitic, deceptive, and hypocritical nature--especially as it relates to societal norms. Next, we dive into "Gratitude: Why Giving Thanks Is the Key to Our Well-Being" as we consider a grateful disposition, gratitude density, obstacles to gratitude, benefits of gratitude, biblical themes and theological rationale, practices, and the relationship of suffering to gratitude.

With three doctorates from Oxford and over 50 books to his credit, Dr. Alister McGrath is well-equipped to discuss apologetics including core elements, the inference to the best explanation, Dawkins' demand for a proof, and points of contact including a sense of longing, the beauty of the world, the ordering of nature, a sense of wonder, a sense of moral obligation, existential anxiety, and the fine tuning of the universe. He then covers narrative apologetics, enlightenment rationalism, the alleged incompatibility of science and religion, and materialist reductionism. McGrath also considers several Christian thinkers including Chesterton, Lewis, Sayers, Schaffer, and Taylor. We finish up with a look at creation and evolution.

Historical orthodoxy has it that Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer participated in some way at some level in a plot to assassinate Hitler. Dr. Mark Thiessen challenges this reading of history, arguing that Bonhoeffer maintained his pacifism till the end. Dr. Nation considers the views of other Bonhoeffer scholars, the biographical work of Eberhard Bethge, the writings of Bonhoeffer, and the thoughts of others who knew Bonhoeffer. We finally consider the ethical implications of this issue for the church today.

Dr. Joshua Rasmussen discusses various lines of thought related to understanding the nature and origin of the human person. We look at inquiry in terms of introspection, reason, and the scientific method as well as feelings according to eliminativism, reductionism, non-reductive materialism, and the something more view. We next consider thought in relation to the aspects of aboutness, structure, truth-value, logical linkability, and counting arguments. Dr. Rasmussen then explores five theories of perception (direct realism, phenomenalism, intentional theory, representationalism, window theory) and the will, freedom, determinism, and compatibilism. We next tackle the value of the individual, intrinsic value, the value puzzle, the mind-body problem, epiphenomenalism, dualistic interactionism, the conscious substance theory, the self, oneness, point of view, and self-awareness. We move on to the origins of persons, the construction problem, mind-making, the binding problem, the unity of a conscious self, three views of identity (body, psychological, soul) dichotomist and trichotomist views, and the prior identity hypothesis. Dr. Rasmussen discusses the emergence of consciousness in terms of strong emergence, incongruent emergence, and substance emergence. Finally, Dr. Rasmussen answers the question, 'how could a first-person conscious substance come to exist?'

Dr. Craig Blomberg discusses several possible objections to the Christian understanding of God from the perspective of a New Testament scholar. We cover suffering and evil in the world, the notion of hell, and the relationship between slavery, gender roles, and homosexuality. Dr. Blomberg also considers miracles, mythology, violence, and biblical contradictions. I apologize for the poor audio quality.
NOTES: In the interview at 20:55 I prompt Dr. Blomberg to address the wish that the New Testament would have prohibited believers from holding slaves altogether. Blomberg responds by considering the social upheaval this would cause throughout the whole Roman empire, describing it in terms of a sudden change brought about by edict, affecting the lowest ranking to the highest ranking slaves. However, this seems to miss the point since at the time of the writing of the New Testament documents Christians comprised a small and relatively powerless part of the population. The prohibition of slave owning by Christians would have only gradually (and indirectly) affected the Roman empire as Christianity spread little by little.

George Yancey defines America's race problem, considers the meaning, strengths, and weaknesses of antiracism and colorblindness, takes a look at systemic racism and racial disparities and examines how diversity, equity, and inclusion programs often function. Yancey explains his alternative view as mutual accountability and marshals evidence to support it. He presents a biblical and theological basis for his view and describes how it can look in daily life. We discuss the nature of Christian intentional communities, religious vitality, the 5 historic waves of Christian intentional communities (CIC) in the U.S., the biblical basis for CICs, the components of CICs, the key strengths and weaknesses of CICs, as well as the structural, organizational, and individual explanations for religious vitality. We also consider the relationship of CICs to society and the greater church and examine the theme of alienation. The issues of economic sharing, agency, charisma, authority, in-group and out-group orientation, strictness, leniency, and commitment are all covered. Finally, as a pastor, church planter, and sociologist Dr. Killian offers his ideas on how churches can grow in vitality. Intentional communities play such a vital role in the church yet they can easily overdo it in their effort to foster greater togetherness. Killian includes both beautiful examples of the church as family as well as absurd examples of overreach and oversharing. Dr. Bryan discusses how the Abrahamic covenant and the conquest of Canaan are related to cultural identity. Bryan covers themes of privilege and hospitality in Matthew and describes how Israel is restored in Jesus. In this interview, based on Matthew Lundberg's "Christian Martyrdom and Christian Violence: On Suffering and Wielding the Sword", the strengths and weaknesses of both just war and pacifism are considered along with their biblical and theological foundations and logic, especially as they relate to Christian martyrdom. We look at the criteria for martyrdom, martyrdom of confession and action, the early church and other pacifistic traditions, restraining the necessities of realism, Augustine, Neibuhr, and Bonhoeffer, and especially Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount and the kingdom of God.

Douglas Harink shares insights from his book entitled "Resurrecting Justice: Reading Romans for the Life of the World". He sees the traditional rendering of "righteousness" in the Book of Romans as "justice". This provides a contrast to traditional perspectives that focus only on justification by faith for individuals. Harink covers personal as well as systemic sin, Adam and Christ, weak law and sovereign law, obedience to God, ultimate and cosmic justice, just war, Israel and the church, messianic patience and solidarity, messianic public service, political authorities, and more.

The Apostle Paul knew well how to live in contentment in all situations, no matter how much he suffered. He continually experienced the strength that comes through a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. Through faith, discipline, and boldly meeting life head-on we can experience this same reality.

Mark A. Jennings explores the rich and encouraging epistle to the Philippians under the overarching theme of partnership in the apostle Paul's gospel. He uses Ben Witherington's schema for organizing the letter according to ancient rhetorical structure and sees themes of fellowship, Paul's rivals, and money as essential to understanding the epistle. The rhetorical structure proceeds as follows: Exordium 1:1-11 Narratio 1:12-26 Propositio 1:27-30 Probatio 2:1-4:3 Peroratio 4:4-9 Concluding arguments/denouement 4:10-20 Enjoy the interview!

We consider religion as a natural phenomenon, the nature of rationality, and resisting the demand for evidence. Clark looks at intuition and inference, the God faculty, the relationship between naturalism and evolution, and the assertion that atheists have higher IQs than theists. Finally, we examine conformity bias, Google’s search engine and human minds, and brain science’s relationship to apologetics. Dr. Kelly James Clark is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul, Turkey.

Mitzi Smith gives us some background on womanist thought, key thinkers, and its relationship with theology and biblical interpretation. We cover the raison d'etre of womanism, potential compatibility for Black conservative evangelical women, and its relevance to White men. Dr. Smith then explores the relationship of exegesis and eisegesis and the multi-faceted role of the womanist biblical scholar. Mitzi Smith examines six biblical scenarios and relates each of them to a contemporary justice concern: the New Testament's portrayal of women as virgins and whore, Matthew's Great Commission and social justice teaching, the Samaritan woman at the well and access to safe water, the Syro-Phonecian woman and intersectionality, the Ethiopian eunuch, Apollos, and the subordinated other, and Elisha, boys, bears, and police brutality. Finally, we look at the ways womanist thought can be applied to the life and mission of the church.

We investigate the questions of author, date, occasion, genre, structure, themes, and historicity of Samuel 1 and 2. Dr. Evans considers the theology of Samuel through six topics: fulfillment of the prophetic word, trust in God, seriousness of sin, importance of true repentance, Davidic covenant, and the Anointed One. The life and influence of Samuel is discussed as is the whole issue of kingship. Evans also considers the rise and fall of Saul as well as key incidents in the career of David.

Dr. Storms covers the nature and purpose of spiritual gifts, how we receive the gifts, and human agency and authority in exercising the gifts. As a Reformed charismatic theologian, he discusses the relationship the Reformed church has had with the spiritual gifts and cessationism as well as his own relationship with cessationists and the future of cessationism. Storms dives into different approaches to words of knowledge and words of wisdom and takes a peak at Spurgeon's experience of words of knowledge. We look at the nature and purpose of prophecy and consider the difference between OT and NT prophecy and the relationship of the priesthood to prophecy. Dr. Storms examines Paul's journey to Jerusalem in Acts, exploring contrary interpretations of prophecy within the text. We take a look at the discernment of spirits, healing, the gift of faith, and apostleship--both biblically and in the church today. Finally, Storms covers the phenomena of supernatural gifts in non-Christians and the current state of the charismatic renewal movement.

Paul Gould leads us through an overview of cultural apologetics as he considers C.S. Lewis’ notion of ages: unenchanted, enchanted, disenchanted, and re- enchanted—as well as the argument from desire. Gould examines the relationship of imagination to beauty and reason to truth and conscience to the good. We also cover Christian ethics from the apologist’s perspective. Dr. Gould then explores several different issues which, through his evidence, ultimately point to the reality of God: the fine tuning of the universe, the existence of life, the diversity and development of species, objective morality, meaning, pain and suffering, love, objective beauty, and the Christian story. We cover the relationship of theology to ethics and consider key Old Testament passages including the giving of the law and the tabernacle. Dr. Long looks at the life, death, and resurrection of Christ and explains how the beatitudes are a fulfillment of the call of Abraham. Christian liturgy is seen in relationship to ethics and Aquinas, Lutherans, Anglicans, and Anabaptists are considered as sources of ethical thought and practice. Dr. Fowl defines idolatry, considers the golden calf, the bronze serpent, and the giving of the Law, compares idols and icons, explores food and idols at Corinth, and looks at the shema and forgetfulness in regard to idolatry. Our discussion contemplates the place of overconsumption, greed, fear, and preemption as they relate to idolatry. Fowl offers an emphasis on creation, thankfulness, catechesis, mission, and a healthy curiosity to counter today's idolatry. Finally, as a contemporary example of idolatry, Dr. Fowl explores White cultural dominance.

The revival at Cane Ridge, Kentucky in 1801 was perhaps the most significant revival meeting of the Second Great Awakening. It was a Presbyterian communion service in the traditional of Scotch communion services that had been occurring for 200 years. Dennis Metzler looks into the work of early Holiness movement writer and forerunner of American psychology, Thomas C. Upham. Today we take a look at the thought of Stanley Hauerwas on peace, violence, non-violence, and peacemaking. Dr. Nathan Hosler, Director of the Church of the Brethren’s Office of Peacebuilding and Policy is the author of "Hauerwas the Peacemaker?: Peacebuilding, Race, and Foreign Policy". Hosler examines the biblical background related to peace and peacemaking and then explains the three theological pillars that are critical to Hauerwas’ thought: Christocentrism, the church and its practices, and the centrality of non-violence. Dennis Metzler examines early Quaker Robert Barclay's take on the key question, 'what is universal redemption?'--not 'what is universal salvation?' Barclay insists that all people have the possibility of being saved through faith, even without ever hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ. God ultimately judges people on their faithfulness to what they do know--not what they don't know.
