In this podcast you will get your energy back through strategies for burnout recovery. This show will give you the practical tips and mindset strategies to help you recover from burnout in healthcare.
What if the thing standing between good results and a thriving team is just one letter?
This week I'm joined by Tracey Ezard — author, facilitator, and creator of Ferocious Warmth — who I met on faculty at a Women in Leadership course in Prato, Italy. Tracey has spent two decades studying what separates great teams from ones that just get by, working across health, education and hospitality.
We talk about:
The "drop one letter" shift — why "I'd like to challenge our thinking" lands completely differently to "your thinking," and the neuroscience of why it lowers defensiveness instead of raising it
The Two Rs: why chasing results without relationship skills caps your outcomes, and what changes when you build both
Why "doctor" already means "leader" — whether you feel ready for that title or not
How multidisciplinary case conferences either open people up or shut them down, and the small, specific things senior clinicians do that make the difference
Early warning signs of leadership burnout, and why energy management matters as much as time management
Leadership as your "second profession" — and how much time you're actually investing in it
Tracey's non-negotiable self-care practice (hint: it involves stairs)
Tracey's story is a brilliant reminder that leadership skill isn't separate from clinical skill — it's part of the job description, whether or not it was ever taught.

Same burnout. Completely different costumes. Why the pressures driving a librarian, a trainee, and an entrepreneur toward burnout look nothing alike on the surface, and what leaders miss when they assume their own experience is the template.
Signal: → Burnout shows up differently by role even within the same institution (physicians, nurses, residents, researchers all differ) → ED trainee burnout risk climbs with seniority, not away from it → Boundary-setting entrepreneurs: 45% report low burnout vs 6% of non-boundary-setters → Mentor/peer access linked to ~50% higher resilience Reset: → Ask, don't assume, what a hard day looks like for someone in a different role → Build cross-role listening into leadership, not just same-lane check-ins → Protect recovery time as the floor, whatever the sector → Deliberate variety across your own work can be part of your own protection

You're sleeping. You're exercising. You're doing all the things. So why do you still feel like you're white-knuckling through the week?
In this episode, Dr Jo Braid explores why standard wellness advice can fall short for high performers — and what the science says is actually driving the stress spiral underneath.
In this episode:
— Why tracking recovery can make the stress response worse (Stanford research)
— What allostatic load means and why sleep alone can't clear the debt
— How rumination hijacks your resting brain (UCLA neuroscience)
— Values distillation: getting from ten words to two
— The difference between solo wellness and nervous system co-regulation
— One action: take a one-week break from a tracking tool

Culture isn't something that happens to you. It's something you're already participating in — whether you lead a team, belong to one, or sit somewhere in between.
This week, Dr Jo shares what a window taught her about workplace culture, why Appreciative Inquiry might be the most underused tool in healthcare teams, and how you can shape the environment around you — regardless of your job title.
In this episode:

This week's action step: Try one appreciative question — with yourself or your team. When were we at our best? or What went well today? Just one. Notice what shifts.

What does it look like to build a big clinical career and stay well doing it?
This week Jo sits down with Dr Jennifer Coller — senior cardiologist, regional practitioner, and founder of Pulse Point Academy — to find out. Jen's burnout never stopped her showing up to work. But it quietly hollowed out everything outside of it. What changed wasn't willpower. It was systems, environment, and intentional design.

We're halfway through 2026. And if your year has been relentless with very little genuine recovery built in — this episode is your reset.
The most downloaded episode of this podcast ever is "How to Recover from Burnout" — over 2,100 listens. That question never stops being relevant. So today we go deeper.
I share the four signals your mind and body send before you crash, and one concrete reset for each. No grand overhaul. Just tools you can use this week.
📸 Screenshot this:
SIGNAL 1 — "I'm tired even after I sleep"
RESET: 5 minutes of intentional rest before you leave work. No phone. No to-do list. Just stop.
SIGNAL 2 — "My brain feels like it's running too many tabs"
RESET: 3-minute brain dump. Everything unfinished out of your head and onto the page.
SIGNAL 3 — "I'm doing everything and resenting all of it"
RESET: One boundary this week. You know which one.
SIGNAL 4 — "I don't remember why I chose this"
RESET: Write down one moment this week where you made a difference. Just one.
Start with the signal that made you uncomfortable when I named it.

High performers are exceptional at supporting others. They are often much less exceptional at being supported themselves.
In this episode, Dr Jo Braid unpacks why professional isolation is so common in healthcare — and what to actually do about it.
You'll hear: Why medical culture trains us to see help-seeking as weakness - The neuroscience of social connection and what chronic isolation does to your decision-making - The difference between a mentor, a coach, and a peer — and why you need all three - The three-column support audit tool - The debrief walk and why movement + connection is a different thing to either alone
Research referenced: - Dr Matthew Lieberman (UCLA) — the social brain and reward pathways - Dr Amy Edmondson (Harvard) — psychological safety and team performance - JAMA research — one trusted person and burnout outcomes in physicians Action step this week: Do the support audit. Three columns: Mentor / Coach / Peer. Five minutes. Honest answers. Pick the most depleted column and identify one name.

You've been told that high performance means giving everything you've got. But what if that's exactly what's burning you out?
In this episode — part two of the four-part series The High Performer's Paradox — Dr Jo Braid unpacks the 80% rule: the counterintuitive idea that deliberately leaving something in the tank isn't a sign of weakness or laziness. It's one of the most strategic things a high performer can do.
Drawing on sports science, neuroscience, and real-world clinical examples, Jo explores why chronically running at full capacity quietly destroys the very cognitive resources that make you exceptional at your job — and what to do instead.
Whether you're in the emergency department, the boardroom, or building your own business, this episode will change how you think about capacity, reserve, and what sustainable high performance actually looks like.
In This Episode:
The Japanese concept of hara hachi bu — and why a 2,500-year-old eating principle has everything to do with burnout recovery
Why operating at "100%" is often not 100% at all — and the patient safety implications that follow
The neuroscience behind why cognitive decline under chronic overload is gradual, insidious, and easy to miss
The Yerkes-Dodson performance curve — what it tells us about effort, output, and the ceiling we refuse to acknowledge
How elite athletes use the 80/20 training split — and how it directly applies to your professional life
Practical tools across all four pillars: Sleep, Support, Mindset, and Movement

In this episode, Dr. Jo Braid kicks off a special four-part series exploring the patterns that drive high performers toward burnout - starting with one of the most confronting realisations in high performance: the qualities that make you exceptional can also be the ones that exhaust you.
Drawing on personal experience in medicine and coaching, Jo shares how strengths like reliability, analytical thinking, and empathy each carry a shadow version that emerges under pressure - rigidity, emotional absence, and avoidance.
The episode explores the neuroscience and psychology behind why this happens, referencing research from Dr. Ryan Niemiec, Dr. Thomas Curran, and Dr. Amy Arnsten. You'll walk away with a practical Strength-Shadow Mapping Exercise to identify where your own strengths are sitting right now - and the early warning signals that tell you when you're sliding past your optimal zone.

Not all burnout is created equal - and neither should your recovery strategy be. In this episode, Dr. Jo explores how different medical specialties experience distinct burnout patterns, from the hypervigilance of emergency medicine to the emotional exhaustion of primary care. Research shows that tailored recovery interventions are 67% more effective than generic stress management programs, yet most healthcare workers are still using one-size-fits-all approaches. Learn how to identify your specialty's unique burnout signature and discover targeted strategies using Dr. Jo's sleep, support, mindset, and movement framework. Whether you're in surgery, emergency medicine, primary care, or diagnostic specialties, this episode will help you build a recovery plan that actually fits your professional reality.
Key Takeaways:
Emergency/acute care workers need active nervous system downregulation techniques
Primary care providers benefit from emotional processing and compassionate boundary work
Surgical specialties require perfectionism management and identity separation from outcomes
Diagnostic specialties need isolation-countering strategies and human connection reminders
Generic burnout advice is only 23% effective compared to 67% for specialty-matched interventions

In this episode, Dr. Jo Braid tackles one of the most requested — and least talked about — topics in healthcare burnout: the colleague who makes an already demanding job feel almost impossible.
Drawing on her own experience as a doctor of over 20 years, alongside research on workplace incivility and the neuroscience of threat response, Jo explores why certain people trigger us so deeply and why that reaction makes complete sense.
She introduces the SPACE framework — a practical, five-step tool for protecting your energy, setting quiet but firm boundaries, and reclaiming your sense of power in difficult workplace dynamics — without burning professional bridges.
This episode is the first in a powerful new series shaped entirely by listener survey responses, with the next ten episodes diving into everything from financial stress and time poverty to organisational factors like workload, fairness, and recognition.

In this episode, Dr. Jo Braid explores how our devices can become sources of chronic stress and burnout for healthcare professionals, sharing a personal story about digital overwhelm while building her coaching business alongside her medical practice. She dives into the latest neuroscience research, explaining how notifications simultaneously trigger dopamine cravings and cortisol spikes, while "attention residue" from constant interruptions takes 15-23 minutes for our brains to recover from each distraction. Dr. Jo provides practical tools within her four-pillar framework and introduces three essential digital boundary strategies: conducting a notification audit, implementing scheduled check-ins, and using the 15-minute rule to break automatic phone-checking patterns. The episode emphasizes that without proper digital boundaries, our devices keep our nervous systems in hypervigilance, preventing the neural recovery essential for avoiding burnout. In this episode, Dr. Jo shares a personal story about stepping into a locum position where she inherited a "difficult" patient situation involving family complaints and communication challenges. Rather than approaching the interaction defensively, she chose curiosity over preconception and discovered that the family wasn't difficult—they were scared and feeling unheard. Through this experience, she learned that healthcare resilience isn't about developing thicker skin, but about maintaining openness and choosing connection even in challenging situations. The episode explores how reframing complaints as information about unmet needs can transform patient relationships and offers practical tools including the "Fresh Eyes" approach, curious questioning techniques, and complaint reframing strategies.

In this deeply personal episode, Dr. Jo Braid shares a conversation with her mother that fundamentally changed how she views career success and professional identity in healthcare. Through her mother's journey from university lecturer to teaching retirees, Jo explores how healthcare professionals can avoid the dangerous trap of tying their self-worth to professional achievements. Drawing on research from the Mayo Clinic and Stanford's WellMD Center, this episode examines the "arrival fallacy" - the belief that reaching the next career milestone will bring lasting fulfilment - and offers evidence-based strategies for reframing work as a means to support your life, not define it. Perfect for healthcare workers and helping professionals seeking to prevent burnout while maintaining meaningful careers, this episode provides practical tools for identity diversification and sustainable excellence.

In this episode, Dr. Jo Braid explores why healthcare workers and helping professionals often struggle with gratitude despite doing meaningful work. She breaks down the neuroscience behind how chronic stress and burnout literally rewire our brains, making it harder to experience positive emotions like appreciation. Dr. Braid explains the concept of "toxic gratitude" - when societal pressure to be thankful becomes another source of stress - and introduces evidence-based micro-gratitude practices designed specifically for overwhelmed helpers. Learn why your inability to feel grateful isn't a character flaw, but a predictable neurobiological response to sustained occupational stress, and discover practical strategies to rebuild your gratitude pathways without adding more pressure to your already stressed system.

In this episode, Dr Jo explores why the latest burnout statistics in healthcare actually give her hope, revealing that 69% of healthcare professionals are experiencing burnout - making it a systemic issue, not a personal failing. She breaks down the key drivers affecting all healthcare disciplines, from increasing patient complexity to overwhelming administrative burdens, and explains why being part of the "70% Club" means you're normal, not broken. Jo shares practical strategies using her four pillars of burnout recovery (mindset, movement, sleep, and support) that work across all healthcare professions, emphasizing her signature approach of "imperfect consistency." The episode provides both personal coping strategies and professional workplace solutions to help healthcare workers support each other and advocate for systemic change. Perfect timing for the end-of-year burnout many healthcare professionals experience in December.

In this deeply personal episode, I share my story from early 2021 - juggling three kids under 10, a private clinic, and hospital shifts during COVID uncertainty - when a colleague's marathon post on Instagram sent me spiraling into comparison and self-doubt. I explore the transformative concept of "imperfect consistency" and why your five-minute walk matters more than someone else's marathon when you're recovering from burnout. The science is clear: our brains love consistency over intensity, and small regular actions literally rewire our neural pathways while building self-efficacy - the belief that we can change our circumstances. I share how my simple five-minute walk around the hospital car park became the foundation for everything else, creating ripple effects that improved my sleep, patience, relationships, and overall wellbeing. This episode redefines success in burnout recovery and offers practical, sustainable strategies for healthcare workers who are tired of feeling like they're failing at self-care.

Discover the Trust Triangle framework that's improving how healthcare professionals build stronger relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. Based on neuroscience research, this episode explores how trust operates through three pillars - Logic, Authenticity, and Empathy - and why your brain releases oxytocin when genuine connections are made. Dr Jo Braid shares practical strategies to strengthen each pillar, recognize when trust "wobbles," and repair relationships quickly and effectively. Research shows that high-trust healthcare environments lead to 74% less stress, 40% less burnout, and 106% more energy at work - making this not just good patient care, but essential self-care. You're already building trust every day; this framework helps you do it more intentionally and effectively.

In this powerful RU OK? Day episode, singer-songwriter Lynda Manwaring joins Dr. Jo Braid for an intimate conversation about using music as a pathway to mental health healing and authentic connection. Lynda shares her personal journey from bottling up emotions to embracing vulnerability, including how the loss of her closest friend to mental health challenges inspired her to speak openly about these experiences through her songwriting. The conversation explores how music bypasses our mental filters to access genuine emotion, why creativity flows directly from the heart without ego, and how sharing our authentic stories through any medium creates space for others to open up about their own struggles. Lynda offers practical wisdom on daily self-care practices, the importance of accepting life's inherent difficulties, and why kindness—both to ourselves and others—can literally change our brain chemistry through oxytocin release. This episode beautifully demonstrates that asking "R U OK?" any day of the year, combined with genuine authenticity and creative expression, can create the life-changing conversations our communities desperately need.

Dr. Jo Braid announces a two-week pause from podcast recording while travelling with family, demonstrating the four pillars of burnout recovery in action. She explains how this intentional break embodies connection by prioritizing deep family relationships, sleep through allowing her nervous system to truly rest, movement as joyful rather than obligatory, and mindset by releasing guilt around stepping away. Dr. Braid shares how the old version of herself would have felt guilty about this break, but now recognizes that taking intentional pauses isn't abandoning her mission of helping healthcare professionals - it's modelling sustainable well-being. She reminds listeners that recovery sometimes means putting down all the tools and simply being present with yourself and loved ones.

In this episode, we explore the transformative concept of "imperfect consistency" - prioritising the act of doing rather than the pursuit of perfection. We contrast perfect inconsistency (waiting for ideal conditions) with imperfect consistency (showing up regularly regardless of conditions) and examine how this approach can decrease your inner critic while building confidence. The episode unpacks the neuroscience behind consistent action, revealing how regular practice rewires your brain more effectively than occasional perfect performance. We provide science-backed applications for both personal and professional contexts, from exercise and learning to project management and leadership communication. Finally, we offer five practical, research-supported strategies to help you implement imperfect consistency in your own life, empowering you to feel successful before you begin rather than waiting until after you've achieved perfection.

In this episode, Dr. Jo Braid explores how small daily irritations—the "pebbles in your shoe"—can significantly impact wellbeing and contribute to burnout when left unaddressed. Drawing from insights at the recent Psychological Safety Summit, she shares how seemingly minor issues like "not having somewhere to store my bag" can create constant cognitive drain through what researchers call "attention residue." Dr. Braid offers five practical strategies to identify and address these small irritations before they accumulate, including validating your experience, assessing impact, identifying what's within your control, taking specific actions, and creating helpful boundaries. Listeners are invited to become curious about their own daily irritations and recognize that addressing these small issues isn't petty—it's an essential part of self-care and burnout prevention. This episode provides actionable tools to help you identify the small stressors that might be stealing your energy and focus without you even realizing it.

In this episode, Dr. Jo Braid interviews Dr. Ettie Ben-Shabat, a physiotherapist specializing in neurological rehabilitation with expertise in neuro-imaging. Dr. Ben-Shabat emphasizes that when rehabilitation clinicians have a deep understanding of neurological imaging, it significantly enhances their ability to tailor treatments effectively and efficiently. This knowledge allows clinicians to pinpoint the exact brain areas affected, leading to more precise and targeted therapies, ultimately reducing uncertainty and stress in their practice. Furthermore, it boosts clinicians' confidence and job satisfaction by enabling them to make informed decisions and provide clearer guidance to patients and their families, thereby mitigating burnout and improving patient care outcomes.

In this episode of The Burnout Recovery Podcast, Jo interviews her guest this week, Ben Bravery, a doctor who shares his personal journey of being diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer and navigating the healthcare system as a patient. Ben's experience highlights the importance of compassion and empathy in the medical field and sheds light on the need for improvements in medical education to better understand the patient's perspective. Tune in to hear how Ben's diagnosis shaped his outlook on healthcare and his mission to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and patients.
The Patient Experience: "I'm still in the system as a patient, and I see myself almost as a, you know, doctor that, as a patient that gets to put on a stethoscope. I cannot feel the patient experience, but that doesn't mean that I don't sometimes forget. You know, the system is engineered in a way that these things are not meant to be a part of our Everyday practice..."
— Ben Bravery

Are burnout and silence connected? The case of junior doctors
Show Notes: In this episode of The Burnout Recovery Podcast, guest Victoria Lister opens up about the connection between burnout and employee voice in the medical profession. With a focus on junior doctors, Victoria explores the impact of the hidden curriculum, hierarchical structures, and cultural norms that discourage speaking up. Join Dr Jo Braid and Victoria Lister as they discuss the importance of empowering healthcare professionals to find their voice and create positive change in their workplace.
Junior doctors will know they’re not alone – that the difficulties they face have been recognised and that people are working on this issue. Senior doctors can take action to change the status quo, creating environments in which speaking up is encouraged, the organisational climate is safe, and the culture is kind. As new professionals in elite professions, we are enculturated/socialised into those worlds. The narratives we are fed are very powerful. Develop awareness of what it is you are immersed in and be true to you.
