• The music video for the track “In The Wind” from the “Vai / Gash” album
• “VAI / GASH” was written and recorded in 1991 in somewhat of a stream of consciousness over a 2-week period fulfilling a desire Steve had to record a particular kind of music to listen to while riding his Harley with my friends.
• The music on “Vai / Gash” was intended to be reminiscent of the of rock music that Steve enjoyed as a teenager in the 1970’s - a stark departure from Vai's more technical solo work.
• It was around that time of recording the tracks that Steve met, and quickly bonded with fellow biker Johnny “Gash” Sombrotto. Gash had survived a severe motorcycle accident in 1977 which left him with 3rd degree burns over 60% of his body and the possibility that he would lose his right arm and left leg - which were ultimately saved.
• Something in Steve wanted to get Gash in the studio and see how his voice would sound over these biker type songs he had demo-ed, but nothing could have prepared me for the voice that came out of his mouth. He was stunned.
• Around that time frame Steve was also starting to launch work on his "Sex and Religion" album and was hoping to eventually record more than the 8 songs he had laid down with John for an alternative project. Unfortunately, that was not meant to be.
• On September 7th, 1998, two days after Steve's father had passed away, his phone rang, It was John’s beloved girlfriend Nancy. Her voice was quaking, and I somehow knew what she was going to tell me. ‘John was in a bike accident and was killed’.”
• Disheartened, Steve put the entire project on the shelf for the next 30 years - only listening to it periodically - particularly around the anniversary of Gash’s passing.
• It was only recently that Steve to release those 8 songs so that the world might have the opportunity to know John.
